Naked Story

Okay, the cover's a bit pony but it's a good collection from America's ever-dependable Ellen Datlow, and you won't find the story I've written for it anywhere else, as it didn't make the cut of 'Red Gloves'. The anthology features urban tales of mystery, fantasy and surreal imagination from an interesting round-up of mostly US [...]

Mr Mad Hair Fights Back

When a Guardian reporter attempted to tackle a story on Donald Trump's collusion with the Scottish authorities to build another crappy golf course in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Trump apparently sent his thugs around to swipe the journalist's camera. Full story here. Thank God I'm English and it couldn't happen here. (Pause to [...]

That's Not London Is It?

I have a hangover. It's my own stupid fault, obviously, so I'm looking at quiet places in London where I can do some proofing in peace and an atmosphere of calm. Here are the London Buddhist Centre, the Battersea Park Peace Pagoda, Leighton House and the Neasden Temple.

London's multiculturalism has never been more pronounced than [...]

3D: The Cycle Ends

3D has always run in cycles. It's the first lesson the new Hollywood executives should have learned. There have been three major cycles, first the red-and-green lens 'Bwana Devil' 3D boom of the 1950s, then the polarised lens Warhol-Morrissey 'Frankenstein' and 'Dracula' of the 70s, and finally the boom started by 'Comin' At Ya!' and [...]

The Future Is Exhausting

All this talk of what we're going to be doing in the future is making my head spin. So thanks a bunch to reader Rick who sent me this view of what white people will be doing in the future. And I thought we'd be fighting each other for food.

Please note that judging from this [...]

eReading: The Love Affair Wanes

I don't think I'll be doing too many more of these eReader posts, as my love affair with e-reading is definitely on the slide.

Having now read several books on my Sony pocket eReader, I can say that I love it for being able to use the on-screen dictionary, the fact that it fits my [...]

Poe In London

Yesterday I attended an event to mark Edgar Allan Poe's years in London, when he went to school in Stoke Newington. I appeared on a panel with old friends Kim Newman, Barry Forshaw, Steve Jones, Pat Cadigan and Nick Royle. Leaving before my stinking cold took its toll any further, I missed the unveiling of [...]

Suckers!

Looking back over my admittedly terrible Greek photographs reminded my of this lovely two minutes…

Artifice VS Realism

This is something that has interested me for a while. A very well-known writer who is a friend (and therefore I won't name him here) is a brilliant observer of the everyday, and writes about it beautifully – but his plots stink. What you get is brilliant natural observation – and then when you get [...]

More Olympic Majesty

Reader Vicki asked me to show the Olympic clock. Even sticking a few fireworks around it can't make it appear anything but embarrassing. It looks like a sign for a drive-through chicken outlet.
