Buford's Tree - Next #Fiction #Book in the Prairie Winds Golf Course Series #AToZChallenge
Buford's Tree, the 7th book in the Prairie Winds Golf Course series is currently under construction. A middle-aged high school football coach is stricken with a deadly form of cancer. The regulars at the golf course rally around one of their own. Charity, hope, and a tearful reunion deliver a lot of nostalgia to a sobering situation.
This is a difficult book for me to create. Writer’s block has firmly entrenched itself into this project. First, it was my desire to get more involved in the marketing of my books. One promotional month has become eighteen. My mind got sidetracked.
Secondly, this topic hits close to home. Not only am I a cancer survivor, but I have lost a very dear friend – perhaps my best buddy - to the disease. My goal was to write a story that was a tribute to him. However I am finding that no wording is going to replace his loss or honor his friendship. Even though the story will be fictionalized tackling the topic rekindles memories that are personal.
One of these days when my mind allows I will go like gangbusters to get this story on paper. I'll apologize to my readers for not getting a book out this year. In the meantime visit authorjamesross.com and try some of my latest efforts.
James Ross has penned several novels from the Prairie Winds Golf Course setting. The stories are character-based, cross many genres, and have become Kindle favorites. Visit his website for detailed information, reader comments, and contact links.

Amazon, #Autism, an Aneurysm, and Author James Ross #AtoZChallenge
We’re starting off the 2016 A to Z blogging challenge and I’m already at a crossroads. What topic would best serve the letter A? Probably the best way to answer that question is to dodge it. All four subjects – Amazon, autism, an aneurysm, and Author James Ross - will be discussed.
Amazon has been a godsend for me. I finally made the effort the past year and a half to understand their dedicated methods of support that are provided to indie authors. Author Central is a wonderful way for an unknown writer to gain exposure. I would strongly suggest any book writer to create a profile and add accompanying links. The publicity tool gains a lot of search engine notice.
The book wholesaler has recently bought Goodreads and Shelfari. The cross linking brings dividends to authors. With the explosion of the Kindle tablet, eBook sales have skyrocketed. Authors that take advantage of the promotional programs have a decided edge in being noticed. The extra Amazon benefits have provided a mind-numbing boost to my sales and number of readers. I’d strongly suggest authors learn their giveaway and countdown offers.
Secondly, autism in the form of two special needs teenagers, is a main topic of my 5th book - Pabby's Score. Those familiar with my writing know that the creation of unique and memorable characters is what I enjoy most. In this story Pabby and Shae arrive at Prairie Winds Golf Course in an orientation program designed to introduce them to mainstream society.
Next, the aneurysm subject drives the plot in my 4thbook – Opur’s Blade. This deadly killer strikes the unsuspecting victims suddenly. A young mother pushes her son to escape a lower middle class way of life. The story provides much more golf than any of my other novels, but the underlying theme revolves around the aneurysm issue.
Finally, after embarking on a writing career I had to choose a pen name. Since I settled on James Ross a marketing guru wisely suggested that I place Author in front of it to immediately broadcast what my online identity should become. So Author James Ross came into existence before any of the other writers named James Ross could lay rights to it. I staked claim to the web domain and it has forever provided instant individuality. Visit my Author James Ross website.

#LA, #STL, Stan Kroenke, and the #Rams --- What I'll Miss and Won't Miss from the NFL
I'd like to congratulate the Los Angeles area for getting pro football back.
As an original St. Louis Rams PSL purchaser and season ticket holder my disappointment is heartfelt. St. Louis has gotten a bad rap mainly due to a decaying inner city of 300,000 residents. The metropolitan area is home to nearly 3.3 million people and is a wonderful place to live. However 3.3M is a far cry from the megalopolis of Los Angeles which would dwarf STL six times over.
An angel is coming to "The City of Angels" in the form of Stan Kroenke. He desired a bigger stage, larger market, and the glitz that goes along with it. Los Angeles football fans will get the best that money can buy from Kroenke, who is a multi-billionaire as well as a national real estate developer. My hope was that Kroenke would keep his resources in the STL area, but we all knew that realistically that was a dream. The STL area couldn't compete with the numbers out of SoCal. If a move was what Kroenke wanted then I don't blame him for taking advantage of the tremendous opportunity that was waiting for him. The design and proposed plan looks beautiful!

There won't be any pin cushions or voodoo dolls putting a hex on the LA Rams from me. Stan is a nice guy, smart, likable, a good family man, and very shrewd. If there is a buck to be made he welcomes the chance. From a selfish standpoint I wish that we could have kept him. For those that don't know, he grew up in mid-Missouri and married his childhood sweetheart who just happened to be the daughter of Sam Walton.
Stan was on the Board of Directors at WalMart and took advantage of the enormous business expansion that the company rolled out. He parlayed the inheritance into WalMart Super Centers from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean. After initial success the cookie cutter blueprint rolled across the country. His portfolio includes stock holdings, apartment complexes, ranches, sports franchises, media investments, shopping centers, and Lord only knows what else. His main interest however is real estate developing, challenging projects, and making money. Lots and lots of it.
How can you begrudge a guy that has lived the American dream?
St. Louis lost on the relocation deal and Los Angeles got their Rams back. Thanks for letting us lease them for 21 years. Now the residents of Los Angeles will get the best of the best. The stadium and development will be second to none. The training facility and home office will be state of the art. Surrounding property will be first class.
Anyone who can pay $550 Million to relocate and another $2.1 Billion to develop real property deserves to do want they want. So the NFL showpiece now becomes LA. Of course that will come with a price to the fans. I'm sure that Stan made close to $1B on paper the minute he announced the move back to LA. So the relocation fee turned out to be a good investment already. He'll look to recover the development costs with high lease rates, expensive stadium boxes and seats, outrageous concession prices, and ridiculously priced team gear. Get out the credit cards! LA, I hope you support Stan well.
All of this brings me to what I'll miss and not miss from the NFL.
It's disheartening to know that STL will not be recognized as an NFL city. Now we will blend in with many medium-sized cities that are not worthy of being a plantation site. I'll miss the anticipation of the draft. With 4 winning seasons in 21 years the Rams usually were in a position to draft capable talent. I'll miss the anticipation of the season as well as training camp. I'll miss rooting for a "home" team. I'll miss some of the friends that I made within the organization.
There are a number of things from the NFL that I will not miss however. The fan experience on game day has become a drag. The role of television has played a major part there. To me it's actually more fun to watch the product on TV. I will not miss the lines at the gate and having to be frisked. It was always a concern that some nut might want to make a political statement and take a few hundred football fans for an eternal journey some Sunday. I will not miss not being able to get a cell phone signal for a fantasy football update. I will not miss the elbow to rectum seating --- and by the way, contrary to reports, the Edward Jones Dome is a very adequate venue for watching a game. The sports bar with replays and the red zone appeases me, but I'm low maintenance. I will not miss the exorbitant parking prices. Nor will I miss the ridiculous merchandise charges. I will not miss the wallet reach when concession time comes.
In the generation that the Rams were in STL the NFL has changed a lot. I will not miss the disruptions in the flow of the game. The penalty flags, coaching challenges, and instant replays have ruined the game day experience for me. I will not miss the phantom referee calls for holding, pass interference, and flagrant hits to the head which seem to come when the officials feel the need to influence the outcome of a game. I will not miss the drug suspensions and personal conduct issues that seem to plague the sport on a weekly basis. You can rest assured that I will not miss the hypocritical double speak from the NFL front office regarding committees, policies, and task forces. The league will do whatever it wants to do and hide behind those entities whenever it feels the necessity to support the position that it is going to take. The whores for $$$s reside in the league, but what the heck, it's the American way and they are at the top and riding the wave.
So enjoy the ride LA. The Rams are yours forever now. They will come with a price. I'm sure that Kroenke lost a lot of fans in the STL area but he made 31 close knit friends happy when he lined the pockets of the other owners with the relocation fee --- and that's not to mention the 25-30 million new friends he gained in the Southern California region. He's an expert in dealing with dollars, opportunities, and challenges.
For me, I'll be content with my fantasy football league and the red zone action on an HD TV --- and try to squeeze in an extra round or two of golf on Sundays.

FREE #Kindle vs Permafree - Experience My Crime #Fiction #Mystery NOW #IARTG #ASMSG
2015 was a wild year for my eBooks. Instead of writing I devoted a year to marketing and got incredible results. It started with an effort to understand the Kindle Select program which is available to authors on Amazon and was extended to the permafree concept that is available on a number of outlets.
In the spring Shari's Shot climbed to the top of the charts in Crime Fiction on Amazon Kindle and into the Top 50 overall. Needless to say, I was elated. It was a learning process on what to do and what not to do.
In June and July Opur's Blade was promoted. I must have learned my lesson well. My efforts propelled that title to the Number 1 overall download position on Kindle and a number of subcategories. My reaction? Euphoria!
That success was parlayed into a giveaway offer on Pabby's Score in October. That title climbed to the Number 2 overall ranking on Kindle and the top spot in a number of subcategories. Elation followed.
That brought me to another option in early November - permafree. By offering my first book in the Prairie Winds Golf Course series - Lifetime Loser - for free on a number of sites, Amazon Kindle matched the price - FREE! Rather than working within the constraints of the Kindle Select program I've had the chance to give away Lifetime Loser for a longer period of time.
The results have been staggering. Even though the title is available on iBooks, B & N's The Nook, Kobo, Scribd, and 24symbols, Amazon Kindle has created 95% of the downloads. I attribute that to a host of marketing programs that are geared to Kindle books.
On January 11, 2016 I'd like for you to download Lifetime Loser when I use the Kindle marketing program that created a lot of the success on the other titles. Expect Lifetime Loser to climb to the top of all of the Kindle charts.
In case you were wondering, it's a heckuva story. A good subtitle would be How To Steal a Golf Course. The widow of an estate is swindled. A criminal vs. civil justice drama ensues after the IRS opens an investigation. Read how the victim reacts in this character-based thriller. But most importantly - Enjoy!

FREE eBook #Thriller - Lifetime Loser - A White-Collar #Mystery #IARTG #ASMSG
Giving away eBooks has been the norm this year. My newest release - Shari's Shot - took off in the first quarter of 2015. Then Opur's Blade surprisingly shot to the #1 overall position on Free Kindle in July. That jubilant response propelled Pabby's Score to the #2 overall position on the same site.
Now a little different tactic is being used. Lifetime Loser, a white-collar drama centered around civil fraud, is being offered on several sites as a permafree eBook. The marketing strategy is different from the Kindle promotion that was utilized earlier. The title is available on several online book stores.
It is not clear how long the eBook will be available for free. Reader responses will dictate that. However, right now interested readers can download a free copy of this eBook on iBooks as well as Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Scribd, and inktera, Kindle users should be able to get a free copy of Lifetime Loser on Amazon as well.
We should know soon enough whether making the title available to readers outside the Amazon family was a wise move. Right now the number of Kindle downloads has been impressive. Let's see if the other sites can top those lofty figures.
Give Lifetime Loser a try. It was my first foray into fiction writing and one heckuva story.

Lofty Overall Status On FREE Kindle For Opur's Blade
Embracing the Kindle Select free promotional program has been a God-send for me in that it has pushed one of my novels - Opur's Blade - to a very lofty level on Kindle. Initially my view of giving away books was met with reluctance. In my mind the thought process was that I wanted to get paid for my efforts. Any independent author would, or so I thought.
However there was one gigantic hurdle. If readers did not know that an obscure indie author existed, then how would they find that author's work? Marketing people stressed to me the importance of being "out there." The way to do that was to take advantage of the marketing tools provided by Amazon's Kindle Select program and give away ebooks.
So, I got organized, made some friends within the Free Kindle marketing companies, and gave it a coordinated effort. Opur's Blade has "taken off" during the latest promotional period which is running July 20-21. It has broken into the Top 25 in Free Kindle Overall books and sits atop the rankings in Sports Fiction, Cozy Mystery/Suspense, and Young Adult/Teen books. The downloads are off the chart. Get your free Kindle copy now on Amazon. The reviews have been fantastic.
Oh - a little about the book. It's a cozy sports mystery with an ending that will challenge any reader. If you're looking for some character-based suspense, then give it a try right here!

4/23 - Last Kindle Freebie For Shari's Shot
What a ride Shari's Shot has been on. The marketing on my newest release included five free eBook download days on Kindle. Thursday, April 23 is the final promotional day. I must says the entire experience has been remarkable.
Shari's Shot, a cozy mystery with several twists and turns as well as a surprise ending, zoomed off the charts. During the last free period the downloads numbered in the thousands. The title quickly rose to the Number 1 position in the Fiction/Crime - Murder category. It held the Number 2 position in the Cozy Mystery category. The downloads were so plentiful that the book soared into the Top 50 fiction books that had been downloaded on Kindle with a ranking as high as 44. We're hoping to add to those figures on April 23.
Join us and treat yourself to a complimentary eBook. The story is about a high society divorce in St. Louis. With threatening texts, a lover's triangle, an aggressive female divorce attorney, confessions, jail time, and a liaison with a US Congresswoman does it matter that a body turns up in a carpool parking lot? The reviews have been as good as one could hope for. Visit Amazon on 4/23 for a free download!
