Colouring in Manga Studio 5

Manga Studio has yet again revolutionised how I work digitally. The new version has much improved colour handling and brushes, allowing me to work in CMYK preview mode with ICC profiles. Even my editor approved the file that Manga Studio spat out. I still get K mixed in there with the rest of the CMY spectrum but I can live with it if my publisher doesn’t have a beef with the results.

If I want to, I can still take the file into Photoshop and remove the K channel, mixing it in there with the rest of the colours. When I start out working in RGB mode I can usually strip out the resulting K mix (usually around 5-25%), lift that entire channel and paste it into the CMY channels as a neutral grey with multiply. The downside to this is more colour saturation and we all want to keep those levels down. Still, it allows me to mix and experiment with it a bit and the results are almost identical, if a bit less punchy. The K channel when mixing colours usually add a little bit of contrast that I loose when throwing that channel into the CMY channels. The upside to keeping everything in one program is obviously to save a lot fo time. When I did Domovoi for Dark Horse earlier this year I spent almost a week converting files, retouching, layering and tweaking the colours – something I hope to avoid this time around.

If you are interested in my other tools, I use the Textured Pen for inking at 10px and a larger Rough India Ink brush for shadows and heavier lines that need a bit of oomph. For colouring I rely mostly on the Oil Paint brush that I can stipple with for some texture.

So, that’s how I roll. Hope you enjoy the little video I made of the progress.

Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch Small recension

Excellent Review of Domovoi

Over at Good Comics, there’s an excellent review of Domovoi.

Here’s a snippet:

Bergting uses this perpetual twilight to color the book in gorgeous oranges, reds, burnt umbers, and moody blues and purples. It gives the book a patina of the ancient, which helps create that tension between the medieval and the modern that the [...]
