8 Ways to Look Effortlessly Polished

I'm sharing 8 ways to look effortlessly polished in today's video. For more inspiration, check out my book, Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic

Looking polished doesn't come naturally to people. A polished look is intentional. In today's video I go over 8 tips to help you look effortlessly polished, naturally.

SKYE Isabella dress Jennifer20 for 20% off

Tip No. 1

Regard the Overall Outfit When selecting an outfit, regard the overall look and ask yourself if it is a polished look. You will want to avoid excessive rips or overly trendy items. Make sure your clothing is well-taken care of. Remove sweater pills and make sure your pants are tailored to the correct height, for example. I use this machine to remove lint and pills on sweaters. A good clothing steamer will also come in handy.

Tip No. 2

Have a Clear Complexion This is clearly easier said than done. Choose the best skincare products for you that allow you to have clear skin. If you struggle with blemishes or dark circles, apply your makeup in a way that creates the appearance of clear, healthy skin. I use Paula's Choice skincare. I like their RESIST line as well as their Omega line. Right now I'm double cleansing (as opposed to using a makeup wipe) with the Omega Complex Cleansing Balm and the Resist Cleanser. Then I tone with the toner, apply an AHA or BHA exfoliant (only 3x a week), and finally the RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer. Once a week I apply a Purifying Face Mask and this AHA BHA Exfoliant Peel

Tip No. 3

Control Unwanted Hair Controlling unwanted hair is a key part to looking polished. If you want to have smooth legs, for example, shaving is a must. Thank you to Billie for bringing us today's video and sharing their excellent razor with us. Code DAILY gives 10% off the starter kit.

Tip No. 4

Brows Before Bros I'm going to keep repeating this one because it's so critical. Finding the eyebrow shape is a big key to looking polished. Uneven, unruly brows can create an unkempt look. I have used Vegamour to grow out my sparse brows and have been pleased with the results. This is my favorite eyebrow palette

Tip No. 5

Perfect the Neutral Manicure If you'd like a low-maintenance, yet polished manicure, opt for neutral shades. Dark shades are beautiful, but unless you can fix chips right away, they can hinder that polished look you're going for. My favorite neutral shades are Londontown illuminating nail concealer, Cheerio, and Teatime JenniferS for 25% off, and Essie Mademoiselle and Ballet Slippers. For your feet, a good foot file is imperative to get the rough skin off.

Tip No. 6

Wear Well-Kept Shoes No matter what type of shoe you're wearing, whether it be smart or casual, make sure your shoes are well-kept. Scruffy, fraying, or falling-apart shoes will need to be repaired or replaced. Shoes (and handbags as you'll see in the next tip) are very important. Here are some high-quality shoe brands: Oliver Cabell JSCOTT10 for $10 off, Thursday Boot Co., Nothing New, The Spanish Sandal Co. JEN10 for 10% off, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom

Teddy Blake Handbag  TBJennC20 for an extra $20 off. Dress by SKYE Jennifer20 for 20% off

Tip No. 7

Carry a Quality Handbag Equally as important as shoes are handbags (and wallets!). Yours doesn't have to be expensive, although you should invest in the best quality you can afford as a well-constructed handbag could last you years and save you money in the long-run. I've had my Louis Vuitton Totally MM for ten years and have worn it regularly. It still looks fabulous! Here is a blogpost that links some of my favorite handbags.

Blouse by Rungolee DailyC for free silk face mask, Bracelet by SKYE  Jennifer20 for 20% off

Tip No. 8

Messy Hair? Yes, I care! If you want to look elegant, the "messy hair don't care" attitude needs to go. That doesn't mean your hair needs to look like everyone else's hair. Embrace your hair's unique look, but do have a plan for it. Whether you like to wear it up or down, figure out the best and most flattering looks for you.

The Chic Assignment | July 2021

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for July, 2021. I am posting this a day early as I have another video planned for you tomorrow. I hope you enjoy!

Chic Assignment No. 1 Enjoy Gabriel Fauré's Pavane Op. 50

Gabriel Fauré was a French composer (1845-1924) and was one of the foremost French composers of his generation. As a lover of classical music, I'm not entirely sure how Gabriel Fauré's work has escaped me until now, but Pavane Op. 50 is one of the most hauntingly beautiful works of classical music I've ever heard. This month I'm sharing an actual recording of Fauré playing this piece that dates back to 1913, Paris. I truly hope you enjoy it. We will learn more about Fauré in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment No. 2 Explore the poetry of Rumi

Rumi was a 13th century Persian poet and Sufi mystic. He believed strongly in music, poetry, and dance as a way of communicating with God and his poems and famous quotes are steeped in deep wisdom. Whether or not you share Rumi's religious beliefs, his poetry can be both celebrated and enjoyed. I find his quotes to be particularly insightful. Here is a resource with some of his famous quotes. You can read his poetry online here.  The Essential Rumi is a book that contains his most important work. We will learn more about Rumi in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment No. 3 Do a 15-minute Declutter

You would be amazed to learn how much you can accomplish in 15 minutes. I often set the timer when I'm facing a daunting task like cleaning the kitchen or folding a mound of laundry. We can apply the same 15-minute principle to our intimidating decluttering tasks. Next week as part of the on-going Mega Motivation collaboration I take part in, I am sharing my own 15-minute decluttering session. I hope it will provide inspiration for you.

Chic Assignment No. 4 Prepare your wardrobe for the new season

Summer is upon us and it's time to go through your wardrobe to determine if any changes need to be made to account for the warmer weather. I'll be retiring my long sleeved Rachel Pally dress in favor of a lighter weight short sleeve summer dress. I'll be sharing all of my updates with you this month.

What I Eat in a Day *2 Days* Intermittent Fasting 16:8

I'm sharing two different days in this What I Eat in a Day video. As you know, I enjoy doing the 16:8 method of Intermittent Fasting (fasting for 16 hours and enjoying an 8-hour eating window). I do not follow a special diet and aim to eat well-rounded, nutritious meals, so even if you don't do IF, you can still get some meal inspiration from today's video.

Disclaimer: if you are interested in trying intermittent fasting, please consult your doctor first.

If you're interested in hearing about my intermittent fasting one year update, check out this article

Featured: Portmeirion Botanic Garden and Keep Calm and Remain Classy Mug

The first day was a typical week day. I am having a breakfast that has appealed to me nearly every day in the past few months: whole fat Greek yogurt with flax seed, walnuts (or pecans), and fresh fruit.

Plates are Spode Blue Italian

For luncheon (I'm trying to say "luncheon" after reading Long Live the Queen), I enjoyed the Tomato Feta Pasta recipe I recently shared in a What's for Dinner? video.

Tea set is Victoria Magazine Blue Roses, Tea is Plum Deluxe  JENNIFER10 for 10% off

For teatime I enjoyed a cup of Plum Deluxe Tea (the strawberry Earl Grey), and some homemade jam tarts.

Dishes by Portmeirion

Dinner was leftover salmon with roasted veggies and mashed yam. The salmon was a little dry as it was cooked the day prior. Next time, I would refresh it with a lemon butter sauce.

Spode Blue Italian

The second day shows a heartier breakfast. I made an egg scramble with chopped herbs, onions, and shredded cheese. I mixed it together with a dash of heavy cream and scrambled them on the stove. I also enjoyed a leftover homemade cinnamon roll and some chopped fruit.

Yo Mama's Ranch Dressing

For luncheon, we had mini-burritos and a simple salad with Yo Mama's Ranch dressing. There was no teatime today as it was such a busy day with "off" times for meals.

Spode Blue Italian

Dinner was grilled chicken with mashed red potatoes and vegetables.

Nutrition Spotlight

Chic Society Member, Sarah Morgan, is a wellness coach for women and she was kind enough to share her insights on eating well with the Daily Connoisseur audience. Here's what Sarah had to say:

Respect Our Emotional Connection to Food

Meals are steeped in cultural and familial traditions. We use food to cope when we are upset or stressed-out and to celebrate birthdays, triumphs, and even the end of the week. When you abruptly change or eliminate that pattern, you change or eliminate that feeling of pleasure and comfort.

Treat the Cause, Not the Symptom

Instead of focusing on avoiding a particular food, like chips, try to root out why you are grabbing them in the first place. Dig in and explore your feelings around particular foods or activities that you struggle to let go. Discover what it is that you feel so attached to and address it.

Redesign Your Life

Once you’ve started identifying areas of your life that need attention, get to work by finding new ways to feel pleasure and comfort or to relieve stress, frustration, boredom, etc. Take a look at your habits, your daily rituals, and your routines. Be prepared to rewrite years of patterns, which will take some time.

Read the full post here. Thank you, Sarah!

Connoisseur Reviews | Brow Serum, Barely Zero Bra, Solgaard Carry-On Closet

I hope you had a wonderful Father's Day weekend and were able to celebrate the dads in your life. We had a great, relaxing weekend.

Welcome to a new episode of Connoisseur Reviews. I'm reviewing many highly requests items in today's video. I have also procured discount codes where I could. I hope you enjoy.

Solgaard Carry-On Closet code MADAMECHIC gives 15% off

Awarded the distinction of Time Magazine's Best Inventions, the Solgaard Carry-on Closet is an innovative suitcase made with eco-friendly materials, that allows you to transport your belongings elegantly and stylishly. It has a patented built-in shelving system that allows for optimal organization, a USB charging port for convenience, and an indestructible polycarbonate shell for durability.  The color of my suitcase is Cannes Sand. So chic. Solgaard have given us the discount code MADAMECHIC for 15% off.

Vegamour Brow Serum THEDAILYCONNOISSEUR for 20% off

I've been using the Vegamour Brow serum for nearly four months now and have seen growth in my sparse eyebrows. The top is the "before" and the bottom is the "after". I'm impressed with the results and will continue to use it.

My brows have filled in and the "tail" of the brow, which is where most of the sparseness is, has filled out a little. All-in-all, I'm very pleased!

EXO Beauty At-Home Laser Hair Removal TDC15OFF for 15% off

The EXO Beauty at-home laser hair removal device is pretty impressive. It comes with sunglasses (which you should wear when operating the device) and instructions on how to use the machine. This is the type of review which will need to span over a few months as it takes 8 to 12 weeks to see results. Use code TDC15OFF for 15% off.

Neiwai Barely Zero Bra JS10 for 10% off

The Neiwai Barely Zero Bra is a one size fits all (yes, you read that correctly) bra that is sooo comfortable. I have purchased this bra in several colors. It's an excellent tee shirt bra and works well with outfits that won't show the thick straps. It also works as a half-camisole under your clothing. The silhouette won't work for every outfit, however, as the straps are very thick and the neckline is high. Use code JS10 for 10% off.

Montelle Intimates modal bust-support chemise JEN20 for 20% off in midi-length... yes!!!

Made out of buttery-soft, eco-friendly Tencel™ Modal from renewable cellulosic plants such as beech trees, pine trees, and bamboo. All three fibers are biodegradable.

Here are some of the key aspects of the chemise:

• Eco-friendly and buttery-soft Modal• Flattering A-line chemise• Feather flecked stretch galloon lace with soft shimmer• Elastic at the underbust for extra support• Triangle lace insert at the underbust• Soft adjustable straps

Planting Tree is a website that has an excellent selection of high quality plants perfect for your zone. The two rose bushes they sent me were delivered carefully packaged in a box. They arrived with hardly any leaves of buds and a few weeks later they turned into the excellent specimens you see above. Code JENNIFER gives $10 off orders $99+

360 Cookware  DC20 for 20% off

I am finally trying out a high-quality stainless steel cookware set. 360 Cookware is made in America and built to last. The pans have a vapor technology that creates fast even heat. The lids capture the heat and circulates it, rather than allowing it to escape out of the sides. I've been regularly cooking on them for weeks and love them! The key is to not use high heat. Medium heat and under works like a charm. Thank you to 360 Cookware for the 20% discount with code DC20.

Plum Deluxe Tea  JENNIFER10 for 10% off  Plum Deluxe source great ingredients, blend them to perfection and delivery them fresh. They have a wide variety of impressive loose leaf teas to choose from. I have been especially loving the Self-Care Blend Herbal Tea (with elderberry and apricot) and Gratitude Blend Black Tea (a strawberry Earl Grey).

My friend, Inspired by Nikki, has designed this retro-inspired half aprons. They are more decorative than utilitarian and are so adorable.

On the Loose is a new children's book by Chic Society member, Theresa Brown. The mother in this fun story is wearing a robe inspired by my favorite plum robe. How neat! It's a sweet tale about what to do when a lizard accidentally gets into the house.

Comment of the Week

Elizabeth A. writes, "If an artist's art doesn’t appeal to me aesthetically I’m more bound to try and understand the art. It is simple for me to look at Monet or Van Gogh. I like what I see. So I like to look at it. But to try to understand art that I am not drawn to is me giving that artist profound respect. We must try things that we are not sure we will like. Be curious friends!!"

Elizabeth, I couldn't agree more. You stated it perfectly!

Capsule Wardrobe Closet Organization Secrets | Hot Mess House Collab | Bee Organizing Style

I'm sharing updates on my ten-item capsule wardrobe closet organization in today's video.

My YouTube friend, Cass from Clutterbug, has a new hit show on HGTV called, Hot Mess House. The second season premier airs tonight and to celebrate, Cass has invited me and several other YouTubers to share our organization secrets.

Check out this playlist with Cass' favorite YouTubers sharing their decluttering style. I'm in good company here!

Cass' organization system on Clutterbug categorizes different organizing styles based on a "bug" system. Cass classified me as a "Bee". Bee organizers are visual creatures. We like to see our things and we are not stark minimalists. We enjoy beauty, but we are also perfectionists, so sometimes we put off organizing if we can't do it perfectly. You can take Cass' Clutterbug quiz to find out what type of "bug" you are when organizing.

In today's video, I am sharing my closet organization updates. Remember my hot mess wall behind the curtain? That's all been sorted out. I hope you enjoy today's video.

Comment of the Week

MK08 writes, "I always find that those asking rude questions might have gotten the "answers" in time if they just got to know those people in a normal process. We ask those questions because we are part of a culture that "needs to know" every possible thing, when really, if we desire to know people and have any understanding, we would just be patient in our relationships. If I want to tell you parts of my story, just wait for me to initiate that - OR, ask appropriate questions that could lend the opportunity for me to go further if I choose. Great topic!"

MK08- yes! All of those personal questions can come out in time when you get to know someone. It could not agree more. Great comment!

Rude Questions Part 2 | Observations and Reaction

My initial post sharing 5 rude questions and how to respond, received a tremendous response from The Daily Connoisseur audience (and beyond!). It seems that most people have one question they have been asked (or asked repeatedly) that grates on them over time.

I received an outpouring of comments, both public and private, about your life experiences with these questions. In today's video I'm sharing my observations and reactions.
There are a few key takeaways that I'll write about here, but I do encourage you to watch the video to hear a more in-depth discussion.
⚜️Don't put yourself down when met with a rude question. Many people said their response to "When are you due?" was, "I'm not pregnant, I'm just fat!" You don't need to put yourself down in order to make light of the intrusive question.
⚜️Avoid saying something rude back. It can be so tempting. Sooo tempting, sometimes, to say something rude to someone who is rude to you. But avoid this temptation and take the high road. You will never regret it and will come off as a class act.
⚜️Wanting privacy does not equal being ashamed. It is perfectly acceptable to guard your information when you first meet someone. People need to show themselves approved to us before we trust them with information about ourselves. Follow your instinct. Some people might accuse you of being ashamed of who you are if you don't want to share various aspects of your life. Don't pay those people any attention. They will try to shame you into feeling bad for wanting to maintain your privacy. Don't fall for it.

Comment of the Week

Charlotte K. writes, "Isn’t there a quote that says, “There is beauty in the mundane”? I have been a homemaker for 45 years, and always gently corrected those who called me a “housewife”! 😉 It isn’t always fun, but so rewarding to look back on with satisfaction that while I was not always the most skillful or best household manager, I always cherished and was grateful for my life at home. I appreciate your homemaking series and love your outlook on life, Jennifer."

Thank you, Charlotte! Your comment was so lovely.

10 Life-Changing Homemaking Secrets from Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management

My homemaking series continues today as I share ten life-changing homemaking secrets from Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management

Mrs. Isabella Beeton’s 1861 guide on household management remains one of the must referenced and popular guides to managing a home over 160 years later. Here are my ten observations from her book that could provide life-changing homemaking inspiration for you.

[image error]  Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management

⚜️The “mistress of the house” or in our case “homemaker”, is like the "commander of an army. Her spirit will be seen through the whole establishment" (p. 1). If that is the case, what spirit do you see when you look at your home?
⚜️The members of the household are “perpetually dependent” on the homemaker for the happiness, comfort, and well-being of the family (p.1). While that may seem daunting, it should give you a sense of purpose and raison d’être.
⚜️"Early rising is one of the most essential qualities which enter into good household management" (p. 2). Getting up early is the “parent of health”. If the mistress of the house gets up early it is “almost certain that her house will be orderly and well-managed”. (It also says that if she gets up late, her servants will also become “sluggards”.) Most of us do not have live-in servants so maybe we can attribute this tip to the rest of our family.
⚜️ Frugality and Economy are home virtues. Mrs. Beeton quotes a Dr. Johnson, who says, “Frugality may be termed the daughter of Prudence, the sister of Temperance, and the parent of Liberty. He that is extravagant will quickly become poor, and poverty will enforce dependence and invite corruption.” Mrs. Beeton believed that whether you are rich or poor, practicing frugality is a necessity.
⚜️Good temper should be cultivated by the homemaker. The welfare of the household rests on the homemaker’s good temper. “Her influence can hardly be over-estimated, as it has the effect of moulding the characters of those around her, and of acting most beneficially on the happiness of the domestic circle. Every head of a household should strive to be cheerful.”  (p.5). This one convicted me.
⚜️The dress of the homemaker should always be adapted to her circumstances. Ok, in Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management she’s literally talking about changing outfits for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We can’t relate to this Downton Abbey-esque wardrobe change life, but let’s look closer here at what she’s saying. She’s saying dress for the day, but dress appropriately. So, does that mean wear yoga pants all day long since you’ll be cleaning? Not necessarily. You can get dressed for the day in your cute day clothes that express your true style and still get a majority of your cleaning done if you wear an apron and gloves. If you’re going out in the garden to weed, for example, you probably won’t want to wear your nice clothing. Change your clothes for that.
⚜️Keep a housekeeping account book (p. 9). Mrs. Beeton suggests that you write down every single expense you have throughout the day. This will be very helpful for those of us who are prone to overspending or who are trying to stay on a budget. This way “one month’s expenses may be contrasted with another”. Judge Haliburton said, “No man is rich whose expenditure exceeds his means, and no one is poor whose incomings exceed his outgoings.”
⚜️Method and order are the keys for good housekeeping. On p. 27, it reads: “Order, again, is indispensable; for by it we wish to be understood that “there should be a place for everything, and everything in its place.” Method, too, is most necessary; for when the work is properly contrived, and each part arranged in regular succession, it will be done more quickly and more effectually.
⚜️The daily duties of a housekeeper are regulated by the extent of the establishment she superintends (p. 29). In this instance, Mrs. Beeton is now discussing a paid housekeeper position, but we homemakers can apply this to ourselves. We should base our daily duties on what our home (our establishment) needs. Do you live in a large house that needs regular sweeping and vacuuming? Do you live in a small house that needs constant reevaluations of clutter and storage? What does your establishment need?
⚜️Prepare in the evening for the next day’s duties (p. 31). A good homemaker “will often busy herself with the necessary preparations for the next day’s duties. Numberless small, but still important arrangements, will have to be made, so that everything may move smoothly.

Comment of the Week

nightingale writes, "It's been said the state of your home reflects your current state of mind. Creating the right ambiance in a space and being choosy with what I bring in has made a world of difference."

Nightingale, I couldn't agree more. When my home gets in a bad state I pause, reflect, and take care of it. Thank you for your observation.
