Day In The Life: Book Signing at Chevalier's

I'm taking you along with me for my book signing at Chevalier's in Larchmont for my new release, A Paris All Your Own. This is an anthology from bestselling women writers on our beloved city of light. I was honored to share the Madame Chic perspective in my contribution called, The Passion of Routine.

I was joined with Eleanor Brown (who also edited the book) and Maggie Shipstead at Chevalier's bookstore in Larchmont, California. We had a book signing, Q&A and lively discussion with the crowd. Thank you to everyone who came out to meet us!

Eleanor Brown is the author of The Weird Sisters and The Light of Paris. Maggie Shipstead is the author of Seating Arrangements and Astonish Me.

Regarding Monday's Modest Swimwear post, Jaquetta W writes: I switched to swim dresses a few years ago because I was also not comfortable wearing traditional swim wear. It has been the best thing & the styles are a lot more modern than they used to be.

Hi Jaquetta, I was amazed that so many women resonated with Monday's post on swimwear. It seems that the demand for more modest swimwear is very high and as one of the most "liked" comments on the YouTube page, you show the way the pendulum is swinging.

Modest Swimwear | What I Wear

Many people have requested a swimwear video. What do I wear to the pool or the beach? Today, I'm showing you what I like to wear. You might be surprised!

I prefer to wear bathing suits that provide more coverage. Many times we think the only option is the two-piece bikini, or the one-piece suit. I am not saying there is anything wrong with those choices, but at this time in my life they are not working for me. I like to cover up more when swimming for many reasons. One of the great benefits of this is you protect your skin from the sun.



I haven't always worn modest swimwear. I had a bit of a light-bulb moment at the Legoland water park (lightbulb moments can truly happen anywhere!) that helped me make my decision and, you know what? I have never looked back.

All of my swimsuits here are over two years old, so I do not have direct links. But all of these swimsuits were purchased from Land's End. They have a great selection of rash guards, swim skirts and shorts.

You have beautiful hair! Love your books and channel. I'm a hairdresser and my hair is very similar to yours. I also use that same curling iron except mine is the metal one. You mentioned using the flat iron to smooth the frizzies and I thought I would share how I finish my hair. I curl my hair, spraying each section with Kenra Hot Spray or Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press before curling. These are heat protectants and help hold the curl. After letting them cool a little, I brush out the curl with a paddle brush. Then I use a little polishing cream like Bumble and bumble Brilliantine or even some coconut oil rubbed together in my hands and just run my hands down the length of my hair and the curls bounce up and it looks really polished and chic. I use a little lightweight hairspray and it holds all day, even in the Georgia humidity. I finish most all my client's with a little polishing cream whether it's a smooth blow out or curls. Just be careful not to use too much or it can look greasy. Thanks so much for your wonderful, informative videos!!

Mapp and Lucia Book Club Part 3 | Your Comments Discussed

Part 3 of the Mapp and Lucia Book Club continues today. I'm sharing your comments and answering your questions. What part of polite society from Mapp & Lucia's day would I like to bring back? Miss Mapp scared me a little at first with her waspish wit! I was ready to go back to Riseholme, even if it meant listening to more of Lucia's preenings! But as I went along, whenever a new character was introduced, I found myself looking forward to hearing her "take" on them. She was always pretty much accurate -- and funny! I loved it when she referred to Mrs. Poppit and Mr. Wyse as "the young couple" and how they "went out to the front lawn to look at the orchid" (referring to their very obvious attempts to be alone). I noticed that both Mapp and Lucia had a female friend with whom they had a sort of sibling rivalry, one-upsmanship relationship. Mapp had Diva, Lucia had Daisy. Love your comment about how they managed to stay civil, even during an argument, unlike people today. So true! Also, how about the shock registered by Miss Mapp when the Captain and the Major got a little sassy with her when they were in their cups? Miss Mapp's generation certainly expected a certain level of gentlemanly behavior from men -- which I think women in general today have lost (though that is no doubt at least partly our own fault). Anyway, I loved how Miss Mapp had a little crush on the Major -- and that, at the end of the story, she had become his golf partner! Thank you for introducing me to these charming stories, Jennifer!

Shop With Me | Curling Iron and Flat Iron | Jennifer L. Scott

You know I like to use my appliances until they pretty much collapse, and that is what happened with my curling iron. One day, when I went to use it, I noticed something had gone horribly wrong! My flat iron was broken as well, so I take you along with me as I go shopping for new ones. I planned on going to Sephora, but had a last minute change and visited a local beauty supply. The people at Lisa's Beauty Supply in West Los Angeles were so helpful! I love going to these smaller stores and getting their personal and expert advice.

Neither item was inexpensive, but as I use my hair tools for many years, (I think my curling iron was over ten years old!) I like to buy quality.

I purchased the Hot Tools professional ceramic curling iron 1 1/4 inch - the ions increase shine and moisture and reduce damage and static.

And the Croc Hybrid 1 inch ceramic flat iron Please note: the link provided is to the 1 1/2 inch, whereas I have the 1 inch. I was unable to find the 1 inch online, but as you can see, this one has excellent reviews.

Great Find
I wanted to share this great drugstore find, Tree Hut Polishing Facial Scrub. Tree Hut sent me this cleanser to try, and I really like it. It also makes a nice exfoliant as there are tiny polishing beads in the cleanser. Since I am focusing on budget and drugstore beauty this season, this makes a great cleanser at just over $7.

Hi Jennifer,

I have to say that Miss Mapp was my least favorite of the two novels, because of the character of Miss Mapp herself. True, both she and Lucia strive to be the first or the best in anything among their circle, but Mapp, in my opinion, is the worst of the two. She's a terrible snoop (pretending to mail a letter in the middle of the night just to see what the Major and the Captain are doing) that wouldn't hesitate stealing the original idea of a "friend" to make herself appear more fashionable (seeing Diva's chintz flowers float out the window and deciding she would make the dress first). Her food hoard shows her to be greedy and thinking only of herself, and her lie to cover it makes her even more unlikable to me. Her assumption that Isabel wanted to out-do Mapp's red currant fool recipe only supports Mapp's narcissism, and her jealousy of just about every female in Tilling (except perhaps of Irene) is absurd.

On the other hand, Lucia, doesn't necessarily stoop to the Miss Mapp level of competition, and Lucia doesn't appear to pursue intelligence with the same fervor as Mapp. True, Lucia wants to take credit for Daisy's Guru, and she wants to be the first to have the "Bracelys" to her home, but she doesn't succeed in discovering that Olga is the Bracely, and her husband is Shuttleworth. Lucia is very calculating, but she seems to give her people a little more space, and she doesn't seem to be mean-spirited in the way that Miss Mapp does. Perhaps the fact that Lucia has a husband might have something to do with that? Maybe Mapp is just lonely, trying to fill her day with things she thinks are exciting...

I know I sound harsh in my view of Miss Mapp, but maybe that was Benson's goal? Since the two women are to meet in a later book, he's certainly setting up something fun and exciting for us. Maybe a Team Lucia/Team Mapp kind of rivalry?

In the end, I did enjoy reading both books, and I look forward to the next one. I hope there's a book club for that one in the near future!

Mapp & Lucia Book Club | Part 2 | Miss Mapp

Part two of our Mapp & Lucia book club continues today, with Miss Mapp by E.F. Benson. In today's video I explain why this is my favorite book of the two we have discussed and many of my observations comparing life in the 1920s to modern day.

Here are some of the key characters in Miss Mapp:

Elizabeth Mapp- loves to peer out her garden window and spy on the inhabitants of Tilling. Much like Lucia, she thinks very highly of herself and often gets into trouble because of this

Major Benjy- A bachelor, retired military man and Miss Mapp's love interest

Captain Puffin- Major Benjy's best friend

Diva Plaistow- Miss Mapp's friend, the Ethel to Miss Mapp's Lucy

Miss Susan Poppit- Miss Mapp's rival

Today, I discuss several of my favorite episodes in the book, including the red currant fool debacle, the Diva dress mess, Major Benjy's duel and Susan Poppit's elaborate (and according to Miss Mapp, vulgar) bridge buffet.

I have to say that this is my first experience with a book club, and I am so thankful for it. It was just the thing I needed to get me back on track to #seekoutthearts. And to know that Georgie Pillson is your favorite character...he's mine too! One of my favorite parts in the book is when he thinks his sisters are burglars and he sneaks in on them with his toupee hanging off his head and his fire poker pointed at them like a gun, and they just laugh. I really like his sisters, too. They're the exact opposite of Riseholmites, loud and gruff, and they don't seem to care much about appearances. It's fitting that they're the ones who tell Georgie that the Guru is a fake--that in reality he's a cook in an Indian restaurant. And they laugh about that too!

I'm looking forward to the next book club video; I'm really enjoying it.

Mapp & Lucia Book Club | Part 1 | Queen Lucia by E.F. Benson

I'm excited to be starting our Mapp & Lucia Book Club today, starting with the first book in the series by E.F. Benson: Queen Lucia. In today's video, I'm sharing my observations about the book with you.



Queen Lucia is a comedy of manners that follows Mrs. Emmeline Lucas, aka Lucia, as the social queen of Riseholme, England. Other key characters in the book are:

Georgie Pillson: Lucia's foppish best friend

Mr. Lucas (Peppino:) Lucia's very patient husband

Daisy Quantock: Georgie Pillson's neighbor who would love to overthrow Lucia's title of Queen of Riseholm

Olga Bracely: the operatic diva who moves to Riseholme and gives Lucia a run for her money



Here are some fun observations, in list form, that I discuss in today's video:

Lucia reminds me very much of Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances.
They both love the arts, think very highly of themselves and are self-professed Queens of their small communities.

Even when suffering, the residents are thinking about how they look. Georgie is secretly pleased he had the biggest loss with his Louis XVI snuff box!

As soon as it is discovered that the Guru is an impostor and a thief, Daisy proclaims him to be "Lucia's guru".

The residents of Riseholme were had by both the guru and the Princess Popoffski. When you are so concerned about trends and what others think about you, you are more likely to be taken advantage of: think The Emperor's New Clothes.

After each betrayal from the guru and Princess Popoffski are discovered, Lucia and co. carry on for a while to keep up appearances (the guru's practices and the Princess' fortune telling) even though they have completely lost interest in the activities.

When you live in a town where people really care what others think of them, those people are more likely to be taken advantage of. Los Angeles is a place where people really care what others think of them. It is also a place where people pay a lot of money for some pretty crazy practices. You see this in all sorts of services and beauty treatments, etc. You can't get away with that in other parts of the country.

Comment of the Week
Last week's discussion on television for children received a very impassioned response. I will have to do a part 2! Every comment was thought-provoking and full of great advice. Here is an excerpt from what Lillian had to say:

I noticed when I was a nanny and babysitter in high school and college that cartoons always seemed to be about romantic relationships more than about friendships between boys and girls. Young girls don't need to be focused on that kind of relationship or themes of jealousy and fighting over a boy. Instead, we need to teach children (and demonstrate this ourselves) how to have good friendships with everyone.

Lillian, I totally agree. Disney movies, in particular, focus on romantic relationships in a major way. It would be refreshing to see them focused more on themes of friendship.

Inappropriate Content in Cartoons? + What Your Children Can Do INSTEAD of Watching TV

Summertime is upon us, and in today's video I give a list of ideas that your children can do instead of watching television or playing video games. I also give an anecdote about something I noticed about children's cartoons. I hope you will watch today's video and chime in with your comments. As always, I love to hear from you.

As for TV recommendations, here are some cartoons that our family has enjoyed:

Little Bear
Beatrix Potter
Boxcar Children
Wallace & Grommit
Shaun the Sheep
Heidi- this series was on Netflix. I cannot find a link for it, but it is a great children's series.

Faith-based cartoons: Veggie Tales, Adventures in Odyssey

As for activities that do not involve screens, these are the activities I discuss in today's video, written out here in list format.
Learn to Draw, (for example: How To Draw Horses), build a fort, cook and bake, chores and organization, read, listen to an audio book, play outside (swim, ride bikes, roller skates), put on a play, go on a walk, play beauty salon (my favorite!), dolls, play school, learn a new skill (shoe tying, snapping fingers, whistling), make play-dough, make oobleck.

Homemade Play-dough Recipe
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 cup flour
Food coloring

Mix water, vegetable oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan until warm.
Remove from heat and add flour. Stir, then knead until smooth. Store in an air-tight container.
