Split Second, my new novel

Hi. My new novel, Split Second, is now available. Here is a synopsis.

The breathtaking new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of WIRED.

What if you found a way to send something back in time? But not millions of years back, to the age of the dinosaur. Not a day back. Not even a minute back. What if you could only send something back less than the blink of an eye? Would this be of any use? You wouldn't have nearly enough time to right a wrong, change an event, or win a lottery.

Nathan Wexler is a brilliant physicist who thinks he's found a way to send matter a split second into the past. But before he can even confirm his findings, he and his wife-to-be, Jenna Morrison, find themselves in a battle for their very lives. Because while time travel to an instant earlier seems useless, Jenna comes to understand that no capability in history has ever been more profound or far-reaching.

Now, as Jenna fights to defeat the powerful forces arrayed against her, nothing less than the fate of humanity hangs in the balance . . .

SPLIT SECOND is a roller coaster ride of a thriller, one that will have readers pondering the nature of time, and of reality, long after they've read the last page.

"Richards is a tremendous new talent" (Stephen Coonts) who can "keep you turning the pages all night long" (Douglas Preston)

My new novel is now out

Hi. I just wanted to let everyone know that my new novel, BrainWeb is now available on Amazon (in Kindle form, but very soon in paperback and audiobook form)

Here is a description of the book.

When the Academy Awards become the target of a brutal terror attack, only one man can stave off massive bloodshed.

MIND'S EYE, the novel that introduced Nick Hall, was a runaway Kindle bestseller. Now Hall returns in a riveting stand-alone thriller, set in an Internet future that is just around the corner. From the New York Times bestselling author of WIRED.

Nick Hall, an unwilling recipient of brain implants, can surf the Web with his thoughts and read minds. And while this makes him one of the most formidable men on earth, he is determined to stay off the grid.

But when terrorists seize control of the Academy Awards and vow to butcher the world's most beloved stars, one by one, in front of an international television audience, Hall is forced to reveal his astonishing capabilities.

Now, power players around the world will stop at nothing to capture him. And as the secretive group working with Hall begins to unravel, he is sure of only two things: he has been betrayed by someone close to him. And the stakes he is playing for could not be any higher . . .

Based on actual research on thought-controlled Web surfing, BrainWeb is a smart thriller that raises a number of intriguing possibilities about a future that is rapidly approaching.

My latest technothriller, MIND'S EYE, is now available

I just wanted to announce that my newest technothriller, MIND'S EYE, is now available worldwide on Amazon, as an eBook and paperback, and will be available at all eBook stores by the end of next week. I'm pretty excited about this one, and I think anyone who enjoyed my other books will like this one as well. I've pasted a synopsis below. If you know of anyone who might have interest, please help spread the word. Thanks! :)

When Nick Hall wakes up in a dumpster—bloodied, without a memory, and hearing voices in his head—he knows things are bad. But they're about to get far worse. Because he’s being hunted by a team of relentless assassins. Soon Hall discovers that advanced electronics have been implanted in his brain, and he now has two astonishing abilities. He can surf the web using thoughts alone. And he can read minds. But who inserted the implants? And why? And why is someone so desperate to kill him?

As Hall races to find answers, he comes to learn that far more is at stake than just his life. Because his actions can either catapult civilization to new heights—or bring about its total collapse.

Extrapolated from actual research on thought-controlled web surfing, Mind's Eye is a smart, roller-coaster ride of a thriller. One that raises a number of intriguing, and sometimes chilling, possibilities about a future that is just around the corner.

My new book will be out Sep 17!

Hi. I wanted to announce that my newest technothriller, THE CURE, will be out on September 17th, as an eBook and hardcover, and can be pre-ordered now. I believe that readers who enjoyed WIRED and AMPED will also enjoy this one. (I guess I'm going to find out for sure very soon :) ) Here is a description of the book from its cover:

Psychopaths cause untold misery. If you found the cure for this condition, just how far would you go to use it?

Erin Palmer had a devastating encounter with a psychopath as a child. Now a grad student and scientist, she's devoting her life to studying these monsters. When her research catches the attention of Hugh Raborn, a brilliant neuroscientist who claims to have isolated the genes responsible for psychopathic behavior, Erin realizes it may be possible to reverse the condition, restoring souls to psychopaths. But to do so, she'll not only have to operate outside the law, but violate her most cherished ethical principles.

As Erin becomes further involved with Raborn, she begins to suspect that he harbors dark secrets. Is he working for the good of society? Or is he intent on bringing humanity to its knees?

Hunted by powerful, shadowy forces, Erin teams up with another mysterious man, Kyle Hansen, to uncover the truth. The pair soon find themselves pawns in a global conspiracy--one capable of destroying everything Erin holds dear. And forever altering the course of human history . . .

At a time when society seems to be facing an epidemic of psychopathic monsters, The Cure explores this condition, and the surprisingly thorny ethical and moral dilemmas surrounding it, within an explosive, thought-provoking, roller-coaster-ride of a thriller that will have readers turning pages deep into the night.

The choice to go with a major publisher (Macmillan’s Tor/Forge) was a very difficult one for me, but in the end, I realized that the only way to truly reach the significant percentage of readers who still prefer physical books to eBooks was to take this step. Since my novels fall into both the science fiction and thriller categories, Tor/Forge was the perfect publisher for me, as the Tor side is the multiple award winning science fiction publisher of such classics as Ender’s Game, and the Forge side has produced numerous New York Times bestselling mainstream thrillers.

As always, if you do end up reading THE CURE (and enjoying it), your help spreading the world is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Doug

Author With Request for Advice

Hi. I'm the author of a SF/technothriller called WIRED. I have a sequel due out in April, and numerous people have written to me over the months, telling me they enjoyed WIRED and were looking forward to the sequel. I suspect there are others out there who enjoyed the book who would want to know about the sequel as well (believe it or not, about 200,000 people have read it so far). About 655 people have the book on their Goodreads shelf. Is there any way to let them know about the existence of the sequel?

I'm pretty lame when it comes to this stuff, so I have no idea if anyone will read this post, much less if they will have any ideas, but I thought I'd give it a try. If anyone is out there and reads this, and has any ideas as to how I might alert readers of WIRED that the sequel exists (or has any other good advice for that matter)I'd really appreciate it if you would write to me at doug@san.rr.com. Thanks! Doug

My first ever blog -- subject: the secret to happiness

Hi, I've never done this before, and I have to say I don't quite get how this works, but I'm trying to experiment and get with the times. Unless one is already super famous, I'm not entirely sure how a blog gets a following. As far as I know, this will never be read by a single person, but it will be fun to find out.

So I'll start by blogging about the secret to happiness. Why? Because every human on the planet is searching for happiness, but many of us have know idea what this is or where to find it. Over the past several decades, the science of happiness has made great strides, led by pioneers such as Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and others. And, like the study of human facial expressions, findings in this field seem to be universally applicable across every culture yet examined. In addition to the components of happiness we can each actively influence, there also seems to be a genetic component to happiness -- sort of our baseline level. If I told you that one man won a fortune in the lottery and another lost his legs, this would tell you nothing about which man is the happiest a year from now, since both would revert to close to their baseline state. (As you might expect, before this time the lottery winner's happiness would skyrocket and the amputee's happiness would plummet).

Anyway, I wrote an article on the subject recently for a BBC radio program. Here is a link.
http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTM...

So that's it. My first blog. Will anyone ever read it? If they do, will I be alerted somehow?

If anyone does read it and has an idea for other topics about which I can blog, let me know.

Doug
