April 25, 2025: Some Day My (Re)Prints Will Come

Sometimes I wonder if things are kind of quiet on the release schedule. I mean, sure, your humble Daily Illuminator poster knows some of the secrets we're working on behind the scenes, but that handsomely rugged individual dare not speak them. Besides, those are nifty future plans.

I realize, though, that a lot of effort goes into keeping our awesome games still available, through reprints. In the past handful of weeks, we've seen the return of  Munchkin Shadowrun , Zombie Dice , our Weather Dice Set , Munchkin Pony Excess , and others.

We don't tend to make a big deal about these because they're not quite as exciting as new releases (unless it's something we haven't seen in a while). That's especially true if we've gauged our reprint demands correctly and we get the restock in before the item gets hard to find for retailers or customers. Yet each of these projects still takes work on our part: errata checking, prepress review, shipping to us, warehousing, getting them where they need to go, and so on.

I had my second eye operation this morning. I am still very tired and post-oppy.

But I am typing this without glasses. I can see the type on the monitor!

April 21, 2025: A Time For Celebration - Munchkin Big Box Shipping To U.S. Backers!

On April 17, 2024, we launched the Munchkin Big Box on BackerKit Crowdfunding – and y'all crushed it. Within hours, backers were flooding in like hordes of Wandering Monsters, and by the end of the first 24 hours we'd passed $500,000 in funding. That's pretty epic, if you ask us!

We even hosted a special livestream with Jimmie Bragon and Munchkin artist John Kovalic, who answered questions and shared laughs with the community.

Fast forward a bit . . . and yeah, the manufacturing and shipping created some new challenges. Turns out, building a massive box to hold your entire dungeon-delving life (plus room for loot you haven't even collected yet) is a quest unto itself. But it's here. It's real. And it looks fantastic.

If you're in the U.S. and haven't received a shipping notice just yet, don't worry – fulfillment is still in progress. Keep a close eye on your doorstep.

International shipping is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. We'll provide updates as it moves forward.

Now, if we can get personal for a moment: tucked inside that Big Box is a small token that means a great deal to us. It's a tribute to the Red Pen of Doom, a nod to the guiding hand (and occasionally ruthless editing pencil) behind so much of what made Munchkin what it is today. For those who know, you know. For those who don't – just know that this little piece carries a lot of heart. We miss him. And we're proud to carry a piece of that legacy forward, packed lovingly alongside all the loot.

April 23, 2025: The Folklore Podcast

I always thought my interest in folk tales was a strange niche until I discovered The Folklore Podcast, a UK-based show in which scholars, musicians, and storytellers discuss the myths, legends, and tales that underlie popular consciousness. The Folklore Podcast was started in 2016 by Mark Norman, an author and folklore researcher. Ten seasons later, the show has expanded to include book reviews, live events, and an online shop. The subject matter has grown as well. While the earlier seasons focused mainly on British and urban legends, later seasons have covered Icelandic and Japanese folklore, the Baba Yaga, and even American Thanksgiving. The Folklore Podcast is available via Apple, Spotify, and The Folklore Podcast website. You can also watch interviews and view archival video via their YouTube account.

April 18, 2025: Meredith Placko Resigns As CEO (And Other Updates)

Meredith Placko has resigned as our CEO. This was not anticipated; when I get a plan, I'll share. For right now, everyone who was reporting to her will be reporting to me. I have nothing to add to her interview in ICv2 but to wish her and Turbo Dork the best of luck in these tough times.

I cannot say how much I appreciate the support of our staff right now. Your messages – heck, your just showing up for work every morning – mean a great deal. Thank you.

Events have overtaken the Illuminator that I wanted to post about tariff effects on our announced and upcoming releases. Executive summary: nothing good.

I had my first cataract procedure yesterday, and survived, though I slept through the rest of the day and am still groggy today. Next Tuesday we do it all again on the right eye!

April 19, 2025: Panic At The Disc-os?

If you are a DVD fan and still have a library of discs that fill two whole walls of your house including floor-to-ceiling shelves like – um – a guy I heard about, you might want to be aware that many Warner Bros. Home Entertainment DVDs made between 2006 and 2008 seem to be deteriorating and unable to play due to a flaw in the manufacturing process. The company is aware of the issue and is apparently replacing them with the same discs when those rights permit them to do so. More information can be found in this Ars Technica article, including a link to a list of affected discs.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to help this guy I know mop tears from his eyes as he sorts through his media library.
