forthcoming
I write short fiction seldom, but in the past few weeks, I've written (and sold!) a story and a half.
The half story is my share of "The Vital Importance of the Superficial." The other half of the story was written by Ellen Kushner, and the whole thing will appear in the forthcoming anthology Queen Victoria's Book of Spells: Tales of Gaslight Fantasy, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, for Tor Books. To say I am chuffed is putting it very mildly indeed. Ellen asked me to collaborate with her and the experience brought back all kinds of great memories of the letter games we played during summers when we were in college.
The whole story is "The Language of Flowers," in Ekaterina Sedia's forthcoming anthology Wilful Impropriety, from Constable & Robinson in the UK, and Running Press in the US. I am thrilled to be in this collection. Writing "The Language of Flowers" gave me fresh insight into the phrase "I'm having almost too much fun."

my favorite face

This is sculptor Wilfrid Zogbaum in his studio, circa 1961.
I think that's the best smile I've seen in a long time.

Amazing people did amazing things on behalf of Terri Windling, and it was my privilege to participate. I'm happy to say that my last auction items went in the mail to the winners today.
Thanks again to those wonder-working people who ran the auction. Truly impressive!

Magic for Terri Windling
Amazing people are doing amazing things on behalf of one of the kindest and most talented people I know, Terri Windling. You should check into the whys and wherefores and all the auction offerings at http://magick4terri.livejournal.com, but here are links to the first of the offerings made by me and by Patricia C. Wrede -- letters to you (or to someone you love!) from Kate http://magick4terri.livejournal.com/67797.html and Cecy http://magick4terri.livejournal.com/67924.html of SORCERY AND CECELIA, written in longhand, and in Kate's case possibly stained with tea or chocolate.

I no longer remember who first recommended Pinterest to me, or how I ran across it. But I love it so much, I just had to utter a general thank you to those who make it such a fabulous place to hunt for visual treasures. Thank you!
