January–Time to get going!

January is more than half over. The holiday train wreck has been cleared from the tracks, and I have no more excuses not to finish this novel. By “finish,” of course, I mean complete the first draft from A to Z. (If only you could just write “the end” and then have a finished book!)… Continue reading January–Time to get going!

Beyond 50,000

I hit the NaNoWriMo milestone today: 50,000 words! Never mind that it’s December 13, not November 30. Or that I started with 20,000 words I’d already written. Or that I still have miles of story left to tell… It still feels like 50,000 is a magic number. That’s about 200 pages, maybe more if you… Continue reading Beyond 50,000

How to Get Published (ha!)

As if I knew. But there are no “how to do it” rules. There are only “how I did it” stories. And each one of those stories is different. So here’s mine. Anybody who writes with the hope of getting published has heard, “Never give up! Keep trying! Be persistent!” But I did give up.… Continue reading How to Get Published (ha!)

Q & A on Deborah Kalb’s Blog!

I really enjoyed answering these questions on the blog of Deborah Kalb, a children's book author and journalist. She asked me why I decided to write about Mary Shelley and what I think kids will get out of the story of She Made a Monster, among other things. She also asked me what I'm working… Continue reading Q & A on Deborah Kalb’s Blog!

Getting ready for a busy weekend!

Tomorrow--SCHOOL VISITS in Fremont.  Saturday: VALLEJO FRANKENFEST with Trick-or-Treating downtown for the kiddos. I'll be at the Vallejo Bookstore at 11 AM, then back to Pleasant Hill for the FALL FINE ART SHOW! (in the pic at left, mine are the peppers and the cup full of pencils, but I'll be showing abstracts at the fair, plus… Continue reading Getting ready for a busy weekend!

Out & About

Yesterday I was in San Francisco to help out with storytime at the beautiful Charlie's Corner bookstore, where they had a fantastic window display featuring SMAM (I love saying this abbreviation for my book title: "Smam! Smam, lovely Smam!"), and guess what, later on we walked past a different bookstore, and they had SMAM in… Continue reading Out & About

I’ll Be Around

Well, the book launch party is tomorrow (at Bel and Bunna's Books in Lafayette, CA. 11:00 AM--for kids and families and 5:30 PM--for grownups) and of course I'm really excited! But I wanted to say where else I'll be in the next month or so, just in case you want to get a book signed somewhere else! Here's… Continue reading I’ll Be Around

THREE Weeks til Pub Day!

Today is Tuesday, which means that SHE MADE A MONSTER officially goes on sale in exactly three weeks! I can’t believe it. Sometimes it seems like it’s been such a long time coming, but I’m told by those who know that the process actually went lickety-split for this book. And I have to believe them… Continue reading THREE Weeks til Pub Day!

How Mary Shelley Made a Monster, in her own words–Part 3

Better late than never... here at last is the final installment! Mary realizes that her imaginative vision has finally presented her with a story... I opened mine in terror. The idea so possessed my mind, that a thrill of fear ran through me, and I wished to exchange the ghastly image of my fancy for… Continue reading How Mary Shelley Made a Monster, in her own words–Part 3

How Mary Shelley made a monster… in her own words. Part 2

Here's more from Mary Shelley's 1831 Introduction, telling how she "then a young girl, came to think of and to dilate upon so very hideous an idea"... Many and long were the conversations between Lord Byron and Shelley, to which I was a devout but nearly silent listener. During one of these, various philosophical doctrines… Continue reading How Mary Shelley made a monster… in her own words. Part 2
