Finally, Bike Branding Moves Beyond Hipster Ghetto

Americans are riding bikes more than ever, yet cycling is still held up as some sort of cultish hobby relegated to aggro dudes with messenger bags who live and die by their fixed gears.

So maybe it's time for a new image, yeah? Colle+McVoy, a Minneapolis ad agency, has partnered with the coalition Bikes Belong to design People for Bikes, an ingenious bike branding campaign that presents a refreshingly sunny view of life on two wheels. The effort includes a Web site, posters, TV spots...

Developer: Day One Apple iAd Earnings Five Times Android's

iad

Apple's iAd application seems a strange beast that doesn't quite align with Apple's business model. But evidence from one developer after its first day in action suggests that it brings the cash rolling in.

The developer of DropBox, a cloud-based file storage facility, took the unusual step of posting the raw data from Apple's new dedicated advertising system for iOS into a public forum. But when you see the statistics, you can see why they were so enthusiastic to share the data.

While $150...

Solar-Powered Plane Flies 24 Hours, Right Through the Night

solar-impulse

We've talked about the remarkable Solar Impulse aircraft before--it's a mind-boggling vehicle that's important for the future of flight and solar-powered product design. It just flew its first 24-hour non-stop flight, right through the night.

Considering that Solar Impulse only took its very first test flight back in April, the fact it's successfully flown under solar power through the day, and stored battery power through the night for a non-stop day-long mission is almost incredible. It's...

Changing the Rules of the Game: A Solution to the BP Problem

Wall Street caused the BP disaster. Short-termism is the problem. The Benefit Corporation is a solution.

The Old Rules

For public companies, decisions are driven by the quarterly earnings call. Meet the numbers, keep your job. Beat the numbers, collect your bonus. The rules of this game are stunningly simple. And they are backed by the force of law.

U.S. corporate law states that the legal obligation of the directors and officers of a company is to serve the interests of shareholders...

Infographic: Fortune 100 Companies Jump on Social-Media Bandwagon

Corporations are gradually getting wise to the powers of social media. But not all forms of social media are equally favored, as shown by this graphic by Tiffany Farrant for iStrategy:

Why do companies love Twitter and videos so much, while holding longer forms of communication at a distance? I'd argue that it's easy to control a message in 140 characters or a Facebook page, rather than in a blog post which could be easily pilloried in endless quotations, and misappropriated by...

Injecting Soul Into Chilly Modern Design

We're surrounded by anonymous, mass-produced junk. So it's no surprise that for years, forward-thinking designers have been trying to give product design an dollop of individuality and soul, whether that's through customizable designs or high-tech craft.

Those designers are the subject of TechnoCRAFT, the very first museum show curated by all-star designer Yves Béhar. The show opens this Saturday at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. But we've got a quick preview for you. ...

Augmented Reality: The Nightmare Scenario

We've been just as crazy about covering the rise of augmented reality as anyone else--but we haven't yet seen too many examples of just how terrifying a world filled with AR could become.

Architecture student Keiichi Matsuda took it upon himself to imagine just such a future, in this video:

[vimeo 8569187:]

Could something like this come to pass? You want to say: No way!

But then again, maybe it could: Would you trade off real-estate in your personal field of vision, in exchange for f...

Stanford's Bookless Library Heralds The Future of... Book Buying?

library-v-ebook

The e-book has arrived folks, and if Amazon's Kindle and Apple's new iPad with its slew of e-reader apps doesn't prove it, then ponder this: Stanford University's Engineering school may be entering an era of bookless libraries.

NPR has been speaking to adminstrators inside Stanford's library systems, concentrating on the Engineering library. Like most technical libraries in educational institutions, the shelves were once thronged with periodical publications--large tomes packed with research...
