Facebook Is Buying WhatsApp For $16 Billion

$12 billion in stock and $4 billion in cash. WhatsApp will continue to operate independently within Facebook.

WhatsApp, the insanely popular instant messaging service used by 190 million monthly active users, is about to get a splash of Facebook blue. The social media giant announced it is acquiring the cross-platform messaging service for $16 billion--more specifically, $12 billion in stock and $4 billion in cash, per the SEC filing. Facebook says the agreement also "provides for an additional $3 billion in restricted stock units to be granted to WhatsApp's founders and employees that will vest over four years subsequent to closing."

With some know-how, a security firm says an attacker could've exploited this flaw to pinpoint users' precise locations.

A security firm revealed Wednesday that a vulnerability on the popular dating app Tinder made it possible for an attacker with some know-how to pinpoint users' precise locations. Tinder was made known of this security flaw Oct. 23 and the hole was patched up before the new year, according to Max Veytsman at the firm Include Security.
