Recent editing client publishes education book

A spring Ronald G. Veronda editing client of mine has published his latest book, “A Renaissance in Education: Creating a Wiser, Healthier and Less Violent World.” Ronald G. Veronda, a co-founder of The Children’s Consulting Center in San Mateo, Calif., bases his book on a simple premise: As our schools go, so goes our society. Yet, Veronda argues, we’ve been living this credo in reverse, passing on what our society is instead of what can be. “A Renaissance in Education” offers a proven, more effective educational design that not only changes our schools but in turn transforms our communities for the positive. The book is available for purchase online.

How to format drop caps into your ebook

In paperbacks, Ebookdrop caps are a nice touch giving your book a professional, sophisticated appearance. Unfortunately, those drop caps don’t translate well to ebooks, especially Kindle.

The main problem is that Kindle’s software doesn’t support text wrapping features, so the text won’t fit around larger font-sizes or pictures of capital letters. Instead, the drop cap either loses its larger font size or appears out of place. In addition, any graphic or photo that you use which includes a capital letter won’t resize if the reader changes the font size of the letters on their ereader.

This is not to say that you can’t have drop caps – just that you are somewhat limited in what you can do with them.

For example, you make the first letter of a line slightly larger than the rest of the letters in a paragraph simply by adding some coding that makes. Specifically, if the first word of your sentence were Imagine, you would add this code:

Imagine

At the end of the paragraph, you’ll need to add this tag:

This then makes the “I” or the first letter of your sentence boldface and slightly larger than the rest of the text and allows it to resize should a reader change the displayed text’s font size.

Five Great Quotations about Characters

“Begin with Chracters an individual and you find that you have created a type; begin with a type and you find that you have created - nothing.” - F. Scott Fitzgerald

“Supporting players should serve one of two purposes in a story. They either help or hinder the main character. They are allies or irritants. If they aren’t one or the other, what are they doing in the story except taking up space?” - James Scott Bell

“When someone is mean to me, I just make them a victim in my next book.” - Mary Higgins Clark

“Writers are always selling somebody out.” - Joan Didion

“When I used to teach creative writing, I would tell the students to make their characters want something right away - even if it's only a glass of water. Characters paralyzed by the meaninglessness of modern life still have to drink water from time to time.” - Kurt Vonnegut

Writing Inspiration: Finding time to write, Part II

Do you dream Getting started of becoming a writer but always have an excuse for not actually writing? If you’re excuse is “There’s no time,” think again. List three different times in the day when you will be able to write undisturbed for 15 minutes. Try one time one day, another time the next day, and the third time listed on the following day. Which of those times were you the most creative and productive? Establish that time as your daily writing session.

Writing inspiration: What inspired you?

List five Writing Promptstories that you’ve written or started. Where did the inspiration come for those stories? Can you get lightning to strike twice by finding an analogous way to be inspired? For example, if the ideas for a story came from walking through a geologically intriguing setting such as a desert canyon, walk through a different geologically intriguing setting, such as to a waterfall.

The theory behind Hypothesis vs. hypotheses

Writers often Grammar mix up these words, which leaves me scratching my head why.

Hypothesis is singular, as in The study’s results proved the first hypothesis to be true.

Hypotheses is plural, as in Researchers weighed competing hypotheses to determine which one merited testing.

A side note: In science, a hypothesis is a proposed explanation. It is tested and then the test(s) are duplicated by other scientists. Once several hypotheses supporting a theory are proven to be true, then the theory is thought to be true, at least in principle, as well.

Writing Prompt: Thought-provoking question

Suffering from Writing Prompt writer’s block or need to add some spunk to your writing? The problem may be that you need to change up your routine.

To that end, try this tip: Journaling often best unveils truths about oneself when it answers a thought-provoking question. If you’re uncertain what to write about, try these questions to kick start your entry: What have I given up on? When did I last step out of my comfort zone? If I could give a newborn one piece of advice that would stick with him/her forever, what would it be? Note: What you write also might become the kernel for a great book idea!

Skip headers, footers, page numbers in ebook

Among the Ebookmost common novice writers formatting their ebooks run into is including headers, footers and page numbers in their manuscript. Unfortunately, this often leads to the book’s title, author’s name, and page numbers appearing in the middle of the text on an ereader.

There’s no need to include any headers, footers or page numbers in a manuscript formatted for an ebook. The software used to translate your formatted manuscript into a format readable on an ebook won’t treat the headers and footers as would your Microsoft Word program.

In any case, you don’t need to include a header indicating the book’s title in an ebook. At least with Kindle, the software that translates your formatted manuscript automatically places the title at the top of the ereader screen.

In addition, page numbers are superflous in an ebook, as readers can adjust the text’s font and point size, and hence change how many words appear on a screen before the “page” has to be turned.

If reformatting your Word manuscript for a paperback into an ebook, always delete all of the headers, footers and page numbers from the document.

In an economic climate where you face heavy competition, your writing needs a second eye to give you the edge.
