I Was A +1 Date… Again

It is holiday time. That means I need to dig out my party dresses, shoes, bags, make them ready to wear. This is the time of year when my friends give me that call… “Cynthia, can you be my +1? My husband can’t go to the Christmas party, and I just can’t go alone.”

I smile, and say, “Sure, count me in.” The preparation is wonderful, brings back memories of when I used to date… the anticipation, the glory. Oh, the idea that I will get decked out, enjoy the spirits, the conversation, the excitement.

I know how to do this. Over the years, I have learned to be a pro. It’s a job, one I want to be good at so I will get the calls again in the future. It’s easy, just follow my steps. For the sake of clear instructions, I will call my friend, Sally. Rule number one through 100… your job is to make Sally look good, to have her believe it was her best party yet.

·         Arrange for a taxi

·         Tell Sally she looks beautiful

·         Upon arrival, take Sally’s coat and purse

·         Drape coat and purse over your arm

·         Smile, you are happy

·         Keep Sally’s drink fresh

·         Bring Sally a plate of goodies

·         Introduce yourself to Sally’s boss

·         Mingle with other important people

·         Remember to smile and be gracious

·         Keep time short with the boss

·         Be charming

·         Do not irritate her friends

·         Laugh at Sally’s jokes

·         Smile at all times, mingle

·         Drink no more than one per hour

·         Two drinks ok early in evening

·         Call taxi

·         Give Sally a hug

·         Tell her you had a lovely time

That’s all there is to it. This season, I am thinking of making a “you tube” video and will post it as a How To for those who still have questions. Yes, perhaps it will go viral, that would make Sally happy, which is, after all, what it is all about.

Happy Holidays, and enjoy the parties!
