Heidi's Wishlist: Castle Night-Time Shadows

Castle Night-Time Shadows by Moulin Roty is on my wishlist. I would say for this year, but pretty much no one even tries to buy me fairy tale related stuff anymore. It's too intimidating. But that just means I buy for myself after the holidays. Not everything on my wishlist, alas, but a few treats.

Here in my hometown the Nashville Public Library performs several wonderful fairy tales in their downtown theatre. Cinderella has been resurrected this year--I saw it in 2009 and wrote an article which wasn't picked up--but part of the performance then (and I imagine now) includes shadow puppets. It was one of my favorite parts.

And these also hearken back to Lotte Reiniger. Love her work!

Fairy Tale Gifts 2012: Sarah Dawson

Drat! Yesterday's posts were in draft mode, so there were none, but that means two wishlists today!

Our next entry in the Fairy Tale Gifts 2012 Giveaway is from Sarah Dawson:

I have a lot of fairy tale items on my list this year!

1) Cinderella Tales From Around the World by Heidi Anne Heiner (From Heidi: Aw shucks....)

2) From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairy Tales and Their Tellers by Marina Warner (From Heidi: This one is showing up on more than one wishlist. I wholeheartedly endorse it. Everyone should have a copy of this!)

3) The Great Fairy Tale Tradition: From Straparola and Basile to the Brothers Grimm (Norton Critical Editions) by Jack Zipes (From Heidi: Another must have for everyone!)

4) From the Forest: A Search for the Hidden Roots of our Fairytales by Sara Maitland (From Heidi: It's on my wishlist, too!)

So excited! I asked for the Warner book last year and didn't get it, but my parents did get me "The Uses of Enchantment" by Bruno Bettelheim. So great!

Peau d'Ane: Discovering the Dreamer of Franck Sorbier

From FRANCK SORBIER ‘I HAVE A DREAM’:

Franck Sorbier’s fashion shows are always a exceptional and magic moment. For the Spring/Summer collection 2013, the poet, Franck Sorbier, has choosen to reinterpret the tale of “Peau d’Ane”. There is some Magic in the Telling … “Discovering the Dreamer of Franck Sorbier”.

Haute Couture is a land that imagination forgot. Many will speak of it as legend or as fantasy or even as mythology. And that is perfectly fine. We have no objection. However, Haute Couture is a real fact of life.

The Peau d'Ane inspiration is fun and makes me wish the tale was better known in the US since it would make a great challenge on Project Runway or the like. Make a dress like the sun, like the moon, or the stars. Or like the fishes in the sea and all the flowers in the fields depending on what version you read.

Most of the articles on the show which took place earlier this year are in French. But here are two videos, also in French, that show everything in action. This was a collaboration with Intel and their Ultrabook.

Fairy Tale Gifts 2012: Rich Layers

Our first entry in the Fairy Tale Gifts 2012 Giveaway is Rich Layers. Entry submission ends Sunday, but the posts will continue beyond that since I am receiving so many interesting ones...

From Rich Layers:

It's funny that you should ask, since so many of my deeply desired fairy tale items were first spotted here!

Here's my top five:

Fairy Tales By Brothers Grimm 2013 Wall Calendar

Magic and Fairy-tale Dice (Story Telling Game): I have to see how these work. I mean I just have to. And even if it's kind of gimmicky and silly, what a cool treasure for my fairy tale collection.

From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairy Tales and Their Tellers by Marina Warner (Heidi adds, oh yes! Important book on my shelves for years!)

Flame of Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier: Not strictly fairy tale, but certainly related given the first book in the series! (Heidi: Definitely!)

Bluebeard Tales From Around the World by Heidi Anne Heiner: Oh, Bluebeard.... (Heidi: Oh, thank you! And I admit that it's one of my favorites in the SurLaLune series. Bluebeard is fascinating and this book is full of the reasons why.)

Now Available for Kindle: Cinderella Tales From Around the World

Hoorah! Cinderella Tales From Around the World by Heidi Anne Heiner is now available in ebook format on Amazon.

A Barnes and Noble Nook should be coming soon. Since formatting for other devices is long and arduous, I am considering requests for other formats at other stores, but making no promises. I've found the effort has not been worthwhile on previous titles. Since the Kindle format is readable on many devices with the free Kindle reading software, it's also not stopping readers who don't want or own a Kindle. And I personally detest the Nook for PC reader which I have used with high frustration over the years for the books I have acquired for Nook. All my various Kindle apps function much better than Nook for PC. I pretty much refuse to use unless absolutely necessary.

Fairy Tale Gifts 2012 and a Giveaway

I have a copy of The Irresistible Fairy Tale: The Cultural and Social History of a Genre by Jack Zipes to give away. And it's December. So what better way to solicit giveaway entries than to ask you what fairy tale related gift you want this year for whatever December holiday(s) you celebrate?

Share your fairy tale related wish list for this year either through a comment to this blog post or through an email to me. Each wish list item, up to five items, will count as a giveaway entry. I'll make posts of your wishlists to share with other readers here since at least I am always curious. Entries will be accepted through this Sunday, December 9th.

If I get enough entries, I may throw in some extra prizes, such as some SurLaLune titles. Stay tuned. And share your lists!

New Book: Diane von Furstenberg and the Tale of the Empress's New Clothes (Fashion Fairytale 3)

Diane von Furstenberg and the Tale of the Empress's New Clothes (Fashion Fairytale 3) by Camilla Morton is officially released today, December 4th. The first two books in this series were released in 2011, Christian Lacroix and the Tale of Sleeping Beauty (I posted about it here) and Manolo Blahnik and the Tale of the Elves and the Shoemaker. These are admittedly aimed at a different audience that the one that forms the majority here at SurLaLune!

Book description:

The third book in Camilla Morton's unique Fashion Fairy Tale Memoir series, Diane von Fürstenberg and the Tale of the Empress's New Clothes wraps the life story of the iconic designer, international jetsetter, and one-time Andy Warhol muse around one of our most beloved and enduring ‘once-upon-a-time' fables. Royalty and fashion collide in this delightfully fresh take on the classic Emperor's New Clothes tale written by London-based fashion writer Morton (American Vogue, The Wall Street Journal) and art directed exclusively by Diane von Fürstenberg herself—as the iconic designer helps the story's young Empress discover all the colors, shapes, and sizes of inspiration, in a grown-up fairytale that teaches women how to feel creative and empowered.

About the Fashion Fairy Tale Memoir Series

Each book in this inspired series from fashion writer Camilla Morton inventively reimagines one of our favorite "Once Upon a Time" stories, blending with it the real-life story of a famed fashion designer. Lushly illustrated by the designers themselves, these tales illuminate each iconic individual's creative magic while also celebrating his or her unique life and career. The result is an intriguing combination of whimsy and memoir.

In this contemporary twist on The Emperor's New Clothes, Diane von Furstenberg's iconic prints and bright color palette are reworked with signature DVF humor, grace and immense charm. Her illustrations reveal not only all that is regal about her, but all that is very real, as well.

New Book: Princess of the Silver Woods by Jessica Day George

Princess of the Silver Woods (Twelve Dancing Princesses) by Jessica Day George is officially released next week. This is the latest book in her Twelve Dancing Princesses series which began with Princess of the Midnight Ball and Princess of Glass. She has also written Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow and Tuesdays at the Castle.

Book description:

When Petunia, the youngest of King Gregor's twelve dancing daughters, is invited to visit an elderly friend in the neighboring country of Westfalin, she welcomes the change of scenery. But in order to reach Westfalin, Petunia must pass through a forest where strange two-legged wolves are rumored to exist. Wolves intent on redistributing the wealth of the noble citizens who have entered their territory. But the bandit-wolves prove more rakishly handsome than truly dangerous, and it's not until Petunia reaches her destination that she realizes the kindly grandmother she has been summoned to visit is really an enemy bent on restoring an age-old curse. The stories of Red Riding Hood and Robin Hood get a twist as Petunia and her many sisters take on bandits, grannies, and the new King Under Stone to end their family curse once and for all.
