Around the world

I've been doing everything but blogging the past ten months, mostly traveling but of course, also writing. I have a new middle-grade adventure book off the press (Paintball Island), a young-adult one coming in March (Andreo's Race, Tundra Books), and I'm hard at work on another. Meantime, it being my husband's sabbatical year from his work, I've been accompanying him on a rather exotic year: two months in Madrid, Spain (see below right, Toledo), two months in Christchurch, New Zealand and three weeks in Shanghai (see below left). What marvelous and diverse experiences these were! Now I'm in Vancouver getting back into the routine of more disciplined writing, as well as speaking to parents' groups about boys and literacy. Speaking of which, just today, I learned of a great new book review on my book Jump-Starting Boys: http://www.parentingexpress.com/Paren...

"I’m also reading Pam Withers and Cynthia Gill’s Jump-Starting Boys: Help Your Reluctant Learner Find Success in School and Life. Busy parents (I feel your pain!) will appreciate the format of this book that offers a positive spin on the issues that boys face: chapters are divided by useful subheadings and offer brief tips that can be implemented right away, along with quick-fire background (“Symptoms,” “How Common,” “Potential Causes”) on what parents need to know on a particular topic. Material on helping boys with physical issues, in school, and on such issues as mentoring and role models is topped off with useful lists of publishers of books for reluctant readers."

A Spoonful of Fun

Why am I Mary Poppins in this photo?! As a long-time member of Children's Writers and Illustrators of British Columbia, Canada (www.cwill.bc), I was happy to celebrate the organization's 20-year anniversary two nights ago by attending a big party. The catch: We were instructed to go as a children's book character. My friend Karen Hibbard, a children's book illustrator, went as the Mad Hatter. Do we look like we're having fun? Believe it or not, I was awarded one of the three best-costume prizes, which means I ended up bringing home a basket of chocolates and coffee, much to my husband's delight. Better yet, proceeds from this event went to the BC Children’s Hospital, and there were a ton of children’s book authors and illustrators hobnobbing and dancing the night away. Here's a link to more information on the party: http://cwillbcevents.wordpress.com

Festival of Trees book awards

Two weeks in Ontario! Has it really been more than a week since I arrived back from a whirlwind author's tour in which I spoke at schools in London, Whitby and Ottawa? Great schools, libraries and students! Wonderful staff! And such great questions from the students! Best of all, I attended the Festival of Trees book awards, at which I was a nominee. Which means I got to hobnob with fellow nominees and autograph copies of my nominated Tundra novel First Descent for some of the 5,000 students who thronged the Harbourfront Centre and hopefully enjoyed themselves all day. For more information on the event, check out: www.accessola.com/forest Now I'm back home, super-busy putting the finishing touches on two more books, and waiting for the mid-July release of my newest book (for parents and educators), Jump-Starting Boys Hope everyone's having a great spring! Pam

Book Trailer!

Book trailers are all the rage these days, but not all of us have the technological or artistic talent to create one, and some of us have never gotten around to hiring someone else to do it.  So imagine my surprise and delight when I learned that a group of Grade Eight students at Jack Chambers Public School in London, Ontario, Canada had, for a school project, created a book trailer for my novel First Descent! Students Tajriyan, Kayla and Mimas, under their teacher Claire Gulliver, created the brilliant trailer I’ve just posted on my home page (scroll down for it). All I can say is “Wow,” and have these students ever got a great future, whatever careers they pursue. Thank you, Tajriyan, Kayla, Mimas and Mrs. Gulliver, and I look forward to meeting you when I’m in London in May! Pam Withers
