I especially love these two excerpts from her wiki page

I tell kids about Tilly ALL THE TIME when I’m doing tsunami presentations for my job. She lived in a landlocked part of England! She probably thought she would never ever ever use what she learned in her geography class about tsunamis and then just a few weeks later she used it to save over one hundred lives! It’s an incredible story about how anything can happen anytime, and we need to be prepared to act.

What I think is most important about her story is that, even as a kid, Tilly knew she was right and she stuck to that knowledge. She practically threw a fit until her parents listened to her, because at first they kept brushing her off. And that is SO IMPORTANT for our kids to know! Adults can be wrong. You need to trust your instincts. YOU can be right and YOU can act in times of danger and emergency. YOU have the power to save yourself and others.

Guess who got disqualified from the Hugo Awards for unclear, most possibly political reasons!!

Award admin Dave McCarty’s response to people asking why:

But this email is apparently just bouncing everything back so here’s the full list of the admin team:

We’ve now got commentary (and some savage out-calling) from another of the affected parties.

I don’t know if I’d say the Hugos in general have lost any of their prestige, but clearly this year will carry an asterisk in perpetuity.

Posting this more because I think it’s funny then because I think it addresses the issue in any significant way. But like,

Dave McCarty Makes Statement About His Facebook ResponsesPosted on January 27, 2024 by Mike GlyerOn January 27, Dave McCarty, Chengdu Worldcon Hugo Administrator, issued an apology on Facebook for responses he made to comments there. But he reiterated that “The statement that the administration team has previously made about eligibility decisions is the only one I can share.”For those playing along at home, get your bingo cards out because it’s time to mark the hard-to-fill space.I am apologizing.Last week, I posted on my page that the Hugo statistics had gone up thinking that I was talking to just the few folks that had popped in before and asked me about them. I didn’t really think at any time that it would be seen by pretty much everyone that wasn’t me as speaking for the convention and the Hugo team.Clearly, I think we all agree I was wrong. The responses put me in old habits and I got defensive. Most of my responses there were inappropriate, unprofessional, condescending, and a number were clearly insulting. I made things worse.I apologize to the Finalists.I apologize to the Worldcon community.I apologize to the Hugo Awards community. My actions there caused pain and damage to people and communities that I love. Worldcon has been a core part of my life for more than 20 years, and I have to live with the knowldge of the damage I caused here by acting that way.I am going to turn off commenting on both this post and the past post about the stats. The statement that the administration team has previously made about eligibility decisions is the only one I can share. Any further questions or concerns about the 2023 Hugo Awards should be emailed to hugoteam@chengduworldcon.com.Sincerely,DaveALT

Yeah I’ll bet you apologize…

Why is this guy acting like him apologizing is a monumental EVENT 😭😭 And “old habits”?? So he’s a habitual ableist asshole and he knows that??

And today’s bit of the story is:

https://locusmag.com/2024/01/mccarty-standlee-and-others-censured/

Worldcon Intellectual Property (W.I.P.), the California non-profit that holds the service marks of the World Science Fiction Society including “Hugo Award,” issued this statement in a press release on January 31, 2024:

W.I.P. takes very seriously the recent complaints about the 2023 Hugo Award process and complaints about comments made by persons holding official positions in W.I.P. In connection with these concerns, W.I.P. announces the actions listed below. There may be other actions taken or to be taken that are not in this announcement.

Dave McCarty has resigned as a Director of W.I.P.Kevin Standlee has resigned as Chair of the W.I.P. Board of Directors (BoD).W.I.P. has censured or reprimanded the following persons, listed in alphabetic order, for the reason given:Dave McCarty – censured for his public comments that have led to harm of the goodwill and value of our marks and for actions of the Hugo Administration Committee of the Chengdu Worldcon that he presided over.Chen Shi – censured for actions of the Hugo Administration Committee of the Chengdu Worldcon that he presided over.Kevin Standlee – reprimanded for public comments that mistakenly led people to believe that we are not servicing our marks.Ben Yalow – censured for actions of the Hugo Administration Committee of the Chengdu Worldcon that he presided over.Donald Eastlake has been elected Chair of the W.I.P. BoD.

Please note that each year’s World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) is run by a separate organization which administers the Hugo Awards for that year. The Chengdu 2023 Worldcon has asked that any specific questions about the administration of the 2023 Hugo Awards be sent to hugoteam@chengduworldcon.com.

(For media inquiries on topics related to W.I.P. other than the specifics of the 2023 Hugo Awards, you may contact info@thehugoawards.org.)

This statement follows widespread outcry regarding seeming irregularities in the Hugo Awards nomination data, including several entries ruled ineligible by the Hugo Awards administrators, among them R.F. Kuang’s Babel, fan writer nominee Paul Weimer, Astounding nominee Xiran Jay Zhao, and Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, for reasons that are not explained on either the site or the document.
