Chapter 5
“My father is Armand Henri Emmanuel de St. Sebastien, le Duc de Fronsac. Our primary estate— our chateaux— is in the Bourdeaux. You know Bourdeaux, yes?” He looked to them all for affirmation, but his eyes paused until Georgiana nodded.
“I should think!” Bingley responded. “Wine country!”
“Oui, the wine country. Our Bouchet grapes have been grown there since the days of the Romans. Alors, I was born at the chateaux and not yet three years old when le Duc, my father, was called to Paris for le Estates General. He brought us all, ma mère and my older sister also, for he feared the countryside even then and did not want to be parted from us. You know what occurred,” he shrugged his shoulders and shook his head, his brow furrowed. “The unrest, the Bastille… We could not return home or even leave our house in the city.”
“How awful for you,” cried Jane.
“I cannot remember, Madame Bingley. I was too young,” he replied solemnly. “But the stories of those times have been told again and again in my family.” His voice caught. He rose and stood at the fire for a few moments to compose himself. “It became too dangerous in Paris. Laws were broken by the mob with impunity.” He turned back to them. “The homes of my father’s friends were attacked, some burned. He decided then, like so many others, that it was time to flee. We became émigrés in Austria for several years.”
“When was that?” Darcy asked.

Chapter 4

“Surely, he cannot continue on to York in this dreadful weather, Fitwilliam!” Elizabeth put a coaxing hand on her husband’s arm. They were all gathered in the Blue Salon, having just sat before the fire to partake of Cook’s celebrated iced fruitcake marking Elizabeth’s release from childbed, when Reynolds came with the startling news.
Darcy looked up at her from his perusal of the letter of introduction in his hand. Her lovely smile threatened to melt his natural guard against such surprises as this evening’s arrival at his front door of a young French nobleman quite unknown to him. “No, no of course not,” his smile down at her was cautious. He looked over to his brother-in-law. “Charles, have you ever heard of the Comte du Pont-Courlay or his father, the Duc de Fronsac?”
“No,” Bingley shrugged, shaking his head with a laugh. “My acquaintance does not usually extend to French nobility. But the letter; who is it from?”
“A fellow member of my club, Lord Deaveraux. He recommends him to my acquaintance in unexceptional terms.”
“Deaveraux? Is he reliable?” Bingley left his wife’s side and peered over Darcy’s shoulder at the letter. “I do not know him well.”
“He can be relied upon not to cheat at cards!” Darcy replied.

Look, She’s Writing!
After some vigorous prompting (pushing and pulling–ouch!) by two writing friends (Laura Hile and Susan Kaye) I’m up at 4:30 every morning and actually writing again. I am happy to report that I am 10K words into a 32K word novella that is aimed for Christmas. No title yet , but I CAN tell you that it takes place at Christmas, at Pemberley, in 1813 and opens with a previously posted scene at my blog :Traipsing After Jane.
That’s all for now, until I get another 10K words down! Wish me luck!(
