CSI defines 'aswang'

Budj alerted us to a CSI episode in which Langston refers to a monster out of Philippine mythology. In the first place it's pronounced asWANG, not ASSwang. At least he didn't attempt "manananggal". I learned my Philippine mythology not from my folks, other kids, or yaya (Hala ka kung hindi mo uubusin yan, kukunin ka [...]

I am silently judging you by your taste in music.

All right, I'm a music snob. I look down on other people's musical choices. When I'm in a restaurant and I hear music I don't approve of, I ask the waiter to change the song, turn it down, or turn it off. If I meet someone who is humming an Air Supply or Celine Dion [...]

Set your flux capacitors to 1985

We were checking out of the hotel at 4 am so I had seven hours to kill, but instead of getting some sleep I watched five consecutive episodes of C.S.I. (the original series). I find C.S.I very comforting: they'll take the most gruesome crimes and examine the grisliest evidence, but everything makes sense in the [...]

Slingshot!

On our last afternoon in Guam Nikko (this is the correct spelling, not 'Nico'), Eugene and I rode the Slingshot. It is called a slingshot because it works on a similar principle. A spring propulsion device is "pulled" back and then it shoots the capsule into the air at about 160kph. (That's Eugene up there [...]

Got books?

Wednesday! Time for this week's Jock With A Book. Last week you expressed your resounding approval of this new regular feature—with reservations. Some readers were distressed by the elevation below the center of gravity. One said it had the effect of relegating males who considered themselves alpha to beta status, a problem we do not [...]
