Charlie grabs a peanut, Felice sits on her Butt

They gather. From woods, from glens, from treetops and burrows. They gather. Some climb, some crawl, some burrow, some scurrow. They gather. The cornucopia appears and nothing is questioned. They gather. To feast, to dine, to munch, to mind. They gather. Each year the cycle continues, the cycle completes. They gather. Not counting as as … Continue reading "Charlie grabs a peanut, Felice sits on her Butt"

An Experiment in Writing – Part 17: Author Voice, Character Voice (Part 3)

This is the third experiment in the Author Voice, Character Voice arc. I mentioned in Part 1. My goal in this arc is to demonstrate the different voices at an author’s disposal. Part 1 focused on Character Voice. Part 2 focused on Author as Character, something often used when the character has no language and … Continue reading "An Experiment in Writing – Part 17: Author Voice, Character Voice (Part 3)"

Fains I (A John Chance Mystery) Chapter 1 – The Good Earth (rewrite)

You knew it was going too smoothly, right? Or did you also see what needed to be fixed? I stopped working on Fains I for about two weeks. I got up to chapter 12 and realized the arc I created wouldn’t get me to some key plot points in the story. Okay, fair enough. Is … Continue reading "Fains I (A John Chance Mystery) Chapter 1 – The Good Earth (rewrite)"

The Bold One

And each year, one raccoon kit takes the risk, believes their mother’s admonishments that we’re safe (“But don’t let them touch you. You have no idea where their hands have been.”) and comes to us sooner than the others. The others, of course, watch with furrowed brow, behind tree trunks, under bushes, back a ways, … Continue reading "The Bold One"

An Experiment in Writing – Part 16: Author Voice, Character Voice (Part 2)

This experiment is the second in the Author Voice, Character Voice arc. I mentioned in Part 1 there would be three posts. Now it’s looking more like four. My goal in this arc is to demonstrate that character voice – the way a character talks, the words they use, how they emphasize things, grammatical and … Continue reading "An Experiment in Writing – Part 16: Author Voice, Character Voice (Part 2)"

Fains I (A John Chance Mystery) Chapter 6 – It’s in the Bank

Fains I (A John Chance Mystery) Chapter 6 – It’s in the Bank   Monique exited Martin’s store and pulled her car into the street all smiles and bright-eyed. Once out of site she reached under her seat and pulled out her phone. Reception here was iffy at best and she had some kind of … Continue reading "Fains I (A John Chance Mystery) Chapter 6 – It’s in the Bank"

A Treeful of Kits

I mentioned last week how neighborhood (human) mothers tell their children we’re the neighborhood safe house, and that raccoon mothers seem to agree. Must be why we have trees full of kits.
