Nathalie Handal was raised in Latin America, France and the Arab world. Described as “a Renaissance figure,” Pulitzer Prize winner Yusef Kumunyakaa writes, “This cosmopolitan voice belongs to the human family, and it luxuriates in crossing necessary borders.” Her most recent books include the critically acclaimed Poet in Andalucía, which Alice Walker lauds as “poems of depth and weight and the sorrowing song of longing and resolve,” and Love and Strange Horses, winner of the 2011 Gold Medal Independent Publisher Book Award, which The New York Times says is “a book that trembles with belonging (and longing).” Handal is the editor of the groundbreaking classic The Poetry of Arab Women: A Contemporary Anthology, winner of the PEN Oakland Josep ...more

“the poet I saw once...
but whose words have long been
in my mind, windows of invincible candles... ”
Nathalie Handal, The Neverfield: Poem
tags: poetry

“We will tell each other that
we can't choose
between one country and another,
we will tell each other
that we kill
even if we don't want to,
we will regret saying it
and we will start
all over again.
Your pain will hang inside mine, mine inside yours, you will
comb my hair, and I will comb yours.
You will press your ears against my wall,
I will press mine against your body,
we will love and search
we will try and live
with what follows us–
but no one can change this:
we are unable to tear
our eyes from each other”
Nathalie Handal, [(Poet in Andalucia)] [Author: Nathalie Handal] published on

“I'd like to be a shrine, so I can learn from peoples' prayers the story of hearts. I'd like to be a scarf so I can place it over my hair and understand other worlds. I'd like to be the voice of a soprano singer so I can move through all borders and see them vanish with every spell--binding note. I'd like to be light so I illuminate the dark. I'd like to be water to fill bodies so we can gently float together indefinitely. I'd like to be a lemon, to be zest all the time, or an olive tree to shimmer silver on the earth. Most of all, I'd like to be a poem, to reach your heart and stay.”
