The Son My Father Sent To Birmingham

My dad called me over and said, “I want you to listen to this.” It was 1965 and Martin Luther King was speaking about the three kinds of love as defined by the Greek philosophers. King’s philosophy lesson was given in a church surrounded by angry white men who changed their white sheets for police uniforms and were prepared to burn down the church as they had done before.

King was on a march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery.

My father told me, “You’ll do that,” meaning I’d go down South, I’d join the Freedom Riders, become a lawyer for King, a knight for justice in an unjust world.

But why didn’t he go himself? Why didn’t he join the march, join the fight? I know: kids, responsibility, furniture. He was a furniture salesman. Furniture didn’t march. It sat there. It was sat upon. And the rich farted into the mattresses he sold them. The furniture store was locked from the inside by a poisonous fear of leaving life to chance.

So he put the burden of his quest on

Palast on Bold TV: Trump is IllegitimateHe was selected, not elected.

Trump is Illegitimate. He was selected, not elected. Because hundreds of thousands of voters in key states — like Ohio and Michigan — were blocked from voting.

Above: Watch Palast discuss election fraud with Bold TV host Carrie Sheffield and guest host, John Haltiwanger, Politics Reporter at Business Insider.

Trump’s Wall of Shame

Trump's strategy as a president is to fuel the fears of Americans. The whole country suffers from the aggression and division. People are in need of hearing that decency and courage make sense again.

Look what Santa Brought from Georgia

Ho ho ho! Now that Brian Kemp is no longer Secretary of State of Georgia, his office has informed The Palast Investigative Fund attorneys that they are throwing in the towel in the Palast and Butler v. Kemp suit we filed in Atlanta Federal Court in October.

This opens up the remainder of Kemp’s infamous, racially-poisonous voter purge files. Specifically, Georgia will produce the hidden Crosscheck purge files given to Kemp by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach — files Kemp’s flunkies told us had been "lost."

This data, which we will be analyzing is, as one of Stacey Abrams attorney told me, "a gold mine" which can be critical in the law suit brought by her organization Fair Fight Georgia and in the fight to beat back New Jim Crow vote suppression.

We’ll announce the details in the New Year.

I know you’re thinking, "But Kemp will be Governor!" Yes, but a wiser man than me reminded us that, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." But only, King added, if we give it a damn good push.

Bravo and thanks to the legal team led by Jeanne Mirer and our exceptional team of investigators, journalists and experts.

And giant thanks to you, our supporters and readers who have stood with us year after year.

But there are miles to go before we sleep: Georgia is just one state down, 24 left to go.

Good tidings to you and a Happy New Year from all of us in this merry band.

Poppy Strikes Gold: Bush Sr. Made a Killing – 50 Miners Buried Alive

While pundits are falling all over themselves spewing about the "civility" of the patrician George H. W. Bush, l must honor the memory those 50 men who were buried alive in a gold field in Africa so Bush Sr. could cash in.

To me, this is the most important story of my career — and almost ended it when Bush’s gold mining company (I bet you didn’t know he had one) sued my paper, The Guardian, threatening it with bankruptcy for telling the truth.

But ultimately, the truth was also buried alive, as US papers refused to cover the story, fearing the gold company’s wrath. (Salon.com was the exception.)

I dedicate this story to those miners, buried without pomp, buried by bulldozers while still alive. And to Tundu Lissu the Tanzanian lawyer, father of twins, who risked his life to provide me the corroborating evidence.

Tundu has taken twelve bullets, but survives.

Here is the story as originally published in the first U.S. edition of The Best Democracy Money Can Buy.
