LUDINGTON STATE PARK

We took a 4 day trip to rural Michigan to explore Ludington State Park and the little cozy lakeside town of Ludington. It was both inspiring and ridiculous to see how easily the youth / jrs flashed v11s and v12s. I volunteered as a runner (finding climbers and getting them to the seats as their turn comes up). It turned out to be a poor choice because apparently my voice is incapable of projecting. 

Yosemite

A group of old Cleveland friends and I made a trip out to Yosemite this year to climb Half Dome! It’s a 16 mile, 12 hour hike that has you walking up the 45 degree slope of dope with cables and heavy gloves. It was pretty exhilarating to descend the slope - even better than actually being on top of the dome - because if you were standing fully upright and perpendicular to the rock, you were staring downward into miles and miles of Yosemite. It’s probably one of the most beautiful scenes I’ve ever witnessed.

After the big hike we spent the rest of our visit relaxing in Touloumne Meadow and Olmstead Point, running around, trying to cross streams and find rocks.

Okay, so finding rocks was mostly just me - Yosemite is a HUGE climbers’ paradise and I’m only just learning what things like Camp 4 are all about. I may have been a little obsessed with climbing over the trip, sorry Yosemite friends. We were able to spy two tiny tents on El Cap. Next chance I get, I’m coming here for Yosemite Mountaineering School. I drew this guy out of the pages of Ascent Magazine on the plane ride back to CHI. His name is Jernej Kruder and he is bouldering Riders on the Storm (V13) in Switzerland.

We stayed in a peaceful Airbnb in Groveland. Most of our cabin time was spent prepping for the hike, cooking, doing laundry and playing Spaceteam - but on the last morning most of us got some good patio time with the trees. 

Yellowstone and Grand Teton

It’s the year of national park trips! This is #2 so far and we have a Half Dome hike coming up in June!
 
I went to Yellowstone with family in 2011 on a very thorough trip (meaning we desperately searched for animals to the best of our ability…for hours and hours with binoculars by the side of the road), so I thought that my second trip with friends this time around would just be an extra plus. 

Turns out spring is THE BEST time to go. There were animals everywhere we looked! We found a bear print on our first hike, walked right past an adolescent moose an hour later, and drove past a grizzly the next morning. We saw two bear families with tiny little bear cubs jumping around in the grass and up onto trees (actually we saw this specific bear family after the incident). There was a coyote by a beaver pond, antelope, elk, and of course tons of bison. We even heard that a bison had died in Lamar Valley so we drove over to see if any wolves had descended. No wolves! Next time.

SFO

I had the wonderful opportunity to paint a community mural for a school in East Palo Alto! I was in and out - flew in Friday night, painted all Saturday and Sunday, took a rest day on Monday, and flew back on Tuesday. Here are some IG photos of the amazing volunteers, lettering-in-process, and finish! 

On the way home I caught this awesome Art Deco exhibit in SFO. There were so many gorgeous little products and relics of the era that I just stood there nerding out and drawing until it was time to board!

U of I - Urbana Champaign

UIUC’s campus and student union is picture perfect (big brick buildings, super green grassy quad, frisbee people running everywhere).

I went down to UIUC to speak at the midwest ITASA conference. It’s a little crazy - I remember driving from Wash U to UIUC for an ITASA conference 12 years ago when I was a college freshman! Just thinking that is making the grey hairs pop out. The exec team did a really great job of organizing, so the whole weekend went smoothly and the speakers had a lot of downtime to just relax (I really appreciated that).

After speaking, I sat down on the quad and watched all the college things and people like the creepy older non-college person that I am. 

Pinnacles National Park

D.K., E.G. and I spent a day hiking at Pinnacles National Park. Pinnacles is the newest designated national park in the states, making it #59! It’s known for its condors, bat caves, and the rock formations it’s named after. A lot of climbers come here, too.
The hike we chose (bear gulch cave to high peaks) had plenty of gorgeous views of pinnacles. Our first loop was around 5.2 miles, and we added on another 2.4 when we doubled back to the cave. We kept looking for condors but are pretty sure all we saw were a ton of turkey vultures. It was definitely a lesson in trying to differentiate the two!
The trip ended wonderfully with a lovely, slightly claustrophobic cave scramble in the dark (with flashlights and headlamps and only random white chalk arrows on the walls to guide us). Because we went to such a new park on an off-season weekday, we barely ran into anyone. It felt so different than popular, long established parks like Yellowstone or Yosemite!

Santa Monica

I spent most of my childhood in the San Fernando Valley. After my parents moved back to Taiwan, home base became an apartment manned by my brother in the Sawtelle area.
Only after leaving LA for 10+ years have I learned to appreciate the beaches and great weather (something that we never thought too much about as Angelenos)! On this wonderfully summer-like day in January, I rented a bike to rode up and down the beaches and did a quick sketch before leaving.
I’ve been testing out two grey and black brush pens I bought in Taipei. I like that the tip is soft enough to bend, firm enough to draw thin lines with, and that the ink is transparent and can be layered.
