From Jennifer Byars

Mixers
by Jennifer Byars

My rating: 5 stars

Publisher: Bare Tree Press
Publication Date: October 14, 2015
Genre: Adult Paranormal | Dark
Print Length: 354 pages
Available from: Amazon

An arrogant vampire comes up with a way to make a new immortal species

to help the dark underworld fight the destruction that the human race

has caused; destruction that could soon lead to their imminent

extinction.

Soon to be thirty-nine year old Molly Barons was just your typical

average wife and mother, nothing out of the ordinary. Her life was messy

with children, a husband, house work, and everything related with being

a normal Mom. But, her life is about to change in ways she never

thought possible when a man shows up at her door one summer evening and

kidnaps her from her home.

Molly’s hauled off to England to be part of an experiment for a

group of five powerful men who run the dark world known as the

Creatures. The three vampires, a werewolf King, and an Elvin king all

have their hopes set on her to solve all their problems. She is to

become a blood slave to the vampires and an incubator for the other two.

But, the mindless obedient woman they thought they were going to make

through the experiment, wasn’t what they got.

What they got however, is much more than they bargained for.  As

Molly’s body begins to transform into a new breed of Creature, a Mixer,

her new found abilities weave their way into the depths of her being to

change more than just her body, but her character as well. The world of

darkness thought that by playing God they could bring forth their

salvation, little did they know that one small woman could bring them

all to their knees.

Tome Tender’s Review of
Mixers by Jennifer Byars

Mixers Vampires, their egos, their need to control and dominate, their twisted appetites and their quest to survive as a race, their need for dominance and to have the best of the best.

Think they are the worst of the supernaturals who hide in the shadows of the human world? The same hold true for werewolves and elves, too. It’s all about the control, so when a plan is hatched to create a new species of things that go bump in the night, with the most delectable blood and the ability to procreate for time immortal, they begin the search for the perfect vessels among the human women of the earth.

Making a statement for “older women still being appealing,” Jennifer Byars brings us into the depths of her world with Mixers. So maybe that wasn’t her plan, but when the vamps picked up thirty-nine-year-old Molly, an All American housewife and mother, no one’s life will ever be the same again. Imagine being part of an experiment with creatures you have never even believed existed, welcome to Molly’s new life, as three vamps an Elven King and a Werewolf King find they may have created the perfect “Mixer” but she is nothing like what they expected.

Molly is mysteriously addictive, they crave her, from her scent to her blood to her body, she has become their master in so many ways. Only their brutal inhumanity as one creature metes out punishment through a vicious gang rape and a bullet in her head, does Molly lose her past memories, and becomes like a new slate. The Molly she creates is dark, vengeful and a fighter for justice for all who have been changed against their will.

Step into Jennifer Byars’ world with care, a strong stomach and your righteous anger and don’t forget to slip in some compassion, too. Raw, gritty and ominous, this world feels like even the gravity has more weight as one mixer dares those in power to drop to their knees before her. Does Molly have the allies to cause her “makers” to submit to admitting their vile ways and freeing others bound like her? Ms. Byars writes with a dark and bold stroke, not for the squeamish, but her tale has been executed with a masterful hand. Darkly erotic, brutally jagged, this is a twisted tale of love, hate and survival of the fittest. From start to finish, this is intense without a reprieve from the action, so hang on as these five amateur Dr. Frankensteins discover how well they have done in creating their monster.

=================================

Hello out there.

Well as you may have guessed, I’m an author.

Now what you might be thinking is, great another new author. And yeah, she wrote another new erotic book… been there, done that!

Well honestly, so had I, and that’s exactly why I started writing!

I’m a mother of six children and have been married for twenty five

years. Now I’m not going to sugar coat it for you. I love my family, but

let me tell you… there a little crazy! (Shhh!!) So when I sit down and

read a book, I  want to become the character, just submerge myself in the story… you know, get lost for a couple hours.

So when I turned forty, and yes there’s more to the story then just

that, my children bought me an amazon card for my Kindle so I could  buy as many books as I wanted! My plan was to sit all day relaxing on the couch, sipping chai tea, and buying any and all of the $.99 books to the $5.99 dollar books until my heart was content.

I picked up a book that looked good and started to read, but just a couple pages in I was like, Oh lord another twenty five year old virgin?

I sighed, shrugged it off and continued on. Soon I was back at the

kindle store looking for a book with cool more “mature” woman who I could relate to.

That’s when I stumbled across a book where the woman just turned

forty, and I was like YES! finally some one will have a fun way of

dealing with life, friends, and men! Or so I thought.

So I jumped right in, turning the pages,  flipping through,  getting

into the story, and then this character, this woman who would get it,

who was cool, said something that shocked me. She said now that she was

forty at least she didn’t break out with pimples any more… okay what?! I

wish that was the case! Obviously this author had no idea what a woman

in her forty’s went through.

It was right then that I stood up from my comfortable spot on the

couch and declared to my family…”I can not stand to read one more book

about a twenty five year old virgin whose going to get fall in love with

some whore of a man! Or a forty year old woman who acts like a twenty

five year old virgin! I’m done, I’m writing my own book!”

Yup, that’s what I said, and Yup, that’s how it all started.

I know there are books out there that have leading characters where

the woman is a little older, but she’s never seems… cool. I mean, we

have forty something men snagging up the twenty year olds, why cant

woman have the same kind of fun. I got to tell you the woman I know,

from there late thirties to there early fifties, there not

sitting around watching Murder she wrote.

No these are vibrant, confident woman that can have as much as a good

time as anything or anybody out there. And I thought it was about time

to have a heroine that showed that as well. I write books for woman. I

love smart woman, and I get so tired of see us portrayed as some wishy

washy creature, or some old fuddy-duddy that cant get the guy, hell

doesn’t stand a chance in hell to get a good looking guy. Come on, we

can give as good as we can get, and then some!

Now what’s this site about? Well, honestly I’ll tell funny stories, have discussions, give little insights of my new books.

Honestly I’m writing all the time. Some times I might have three

books that I’m working on at one time. So I hope you enjoy my story, my

goofy joke and the books I write.

So please, pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and lets have fun! And remember…

Women Rock!

Blog Tour Author Drop-In: B. Swangin Webster + 2 Raffles!

Hi! Thanks for stopping by for this, Day 7 of the LET ME JUST SAY THIS blog tour with B. Swangin Webster.  Webster invited me on her radio show on WLVS last year and we had a great time!  After I read her book I just knew I wanted to share it with others, especially women.

This powerful well-written tale of love gone wrong coupled with low self-esteem and Type A business men make this a page-turner.

**Hope you buy a copy of the book today!  Why?  Once you send proof of purchase, you’ll be entered into a $25 Amazon gift raffle ONLY on SuperBowl Sunday, Feb 7th, 2016. Winner will be announced on Mon, 2/8/16.  You must email me at noveldreams2007 (at) gmail (dot) com, to be entered into this ONE DAY only $25 Amazon gift card raffle!  Or, you can send me a tweet with the proof of purchase to: @NoteBkBlogairy. (1st Raffle!)

[If you want to check out the other stops on the tour, click here for the lineup.]

Without further ado, here is my interview with the author.

Tell us about yourself.

B Swangin Webster_New Look_Jan 30 2016

I am a mother, grandmother (Nina) and author. I am a shoe addict and love reading. I have over 300 books that I have read at least twice, three times if I really liked it and I love to cook.

Where can readers find you?

Geez, where to begin. I’m all over social media. If you type in B. Swangin Webster into your Google search, you will find me. I’m the only one but to help you out, I’m on Facebook; https://www.facebook.com/AuthorB.SwanginWebster/?ref=hl I am on Twitter; https://twitter.com/BSwanginWebster and https://twitter.com/webswanginshow Those are the two main ones that I use. Follow me and I will make sure to follow you back.

Let Me Just Say This_cover

Where can readers purchase your book?

I’m on Amazon; http://www.amazon.com/B.-Swangin-Webster/e/B0039NQEIW/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_6?qid=1454079575&sr=8-6

Barnes and Noble; http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/b+swangin+webster?_requestid=167886

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

Yes, I had a high school assignment and thought here is my chance to write a great story. Bad thing was it was only supposed to be one page. Mine was 8 pages and the teacher was NOT impressed. She loved the writing but failed the paper because “I didn’t follow directions.” But at the bottom she told me I had a great narrative and should finish the book and I did. But the book didn’t get published until now. More than 20+ years AFTER the initial paper was written.

What inspires you to write?  And, why?

I don’t think I could live if I couldn’t write. It’s an obsession. Some people smoke, I write. Same thing…if I stop writing, I’ll probably gain 50 pounds! SO I have to keep writing.

Who or what influenced your writing once you began?

E. Lynn Harris was a big influence. He wrote about things that people didn’t want to talk about. He wrote about things that people didn’t want to see in the main stream but the public loved it! And I figured I should be able to do.

What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?

The most challenging this about writing for me; is not to let other characters take over. I have a really bad habit of writing one book when in walks someone from someplace else that says, “Look can you hurry up, you need to write my story.” Who am I to not do that? So as soon as there is a break or my ‘current’ character goes on vacation, I call up the new character and begin their story.

How did you come up with the title?

The title is something I always say and one day at my ‘regular’ job; I said it and the secretary said, “if you ever write a book, that has GOT to be the name.” Thanks Crystal Hall for that.

Can you tell us about your main character?

My main character is Cheryl. A woman who suffers from low self-worth who marries a man that was knight in shining armor until he took the armor off and she found out that he was the devil on earth. She allows her ‘dreams’ of happily ever after to take over her ability to leave behind what is NOT good for her.

How did you develop your plot and characters?

Honestly I didn’t really develop the characters or plot. They kind of grew organically. I sat down and just started writing and the story merged from that.

What do you look for in a cover?

I want the book cover to tell the story but not the main story. I want it to give a glimpse into what the story ‘could’ be about.

What genre of books do you read, or do you stick with the genre you write in?

I read everything from cozy mysteries to dark thrillers. I never want to be a one trick pony! Now remember this is only my opinion. If I only read what I write, my craft would suffer. But you can’t limit yourself in your writing because main stream is not limited in what they are reading; why should I limit myself in my writing.

Are you a pantser or plotter?

PANSTER all the way. I tried doing an outline once and I swear I was pulling out my hair trying to keep it on the line that I had created. When I just ‘free’ write, the story grows into itself and then I go back and fix what is needed when I’m done.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

I don’t HAVE to travel but I LOVE to travel. I will travel where ever a reader of mine wants me to. I have been to at least six cities while promoting my novels and can’t wait to travel more.

Have you ever considered anyone a mentor?

Yes, my mentor was E. Lynn Harris. I my book was first published; I wrote him an email and he answered it. I still have it to this day. The best thing he told me was , “Congrats and welcome to my world. You have been given the most precious gift and you should make sure to always use that gift. No matter what someone tells you; it is your gift.” And he gave me his phone number and we chatted for about three months, every Saturday morning. When I found out that he had died, it crushed me! I couldn’t function because it was like I had lost a best friend, even though we never met; we became friends via phone.

What projects can we expect from you in the future?

Currently I am working on a romanc and  a mystery. I love both of them and during the recent “Jonas” snowstorm, I began writing a book about an unconventional relationship. I am loving the way it is turning out.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I WILL be a full time writer. Playing with my grandchildren and buying shoes! I will also have a full time radio show! Yep; that’s the plan.

How do you deal with rejection letters?

I neatly place them by date of rejection into a 3 ring binder and every time I get another sale; I look at them and smile. You know the saying…revenge is best served cold…or something like that.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out?

The best tools available are going to conferences. It amazes me the number of authors that don’t go to these conferences. They think that we just sit home and churn out books. Just like dentists, lawyers and doctors have to continue their education by staying on top of the latest technology; so do authors. We are doing ourselves a dis-service by sitting behind a computer and not getting out there and meeting the authors that are doing it well. You can learn a lot from a NY Times best seller but you won’t learn it if you never go out to meet them.

Your writing space: Neat, or messy?

My space is neat. I have turned a small closet; into a cute little reading/writing space. So it has to stay neat or something might get lost.

messy room

She’s awesome, isn’t she?  Spunk, personality and a soulful engaging writer!

Now, for a great treat.  The Second Raffle: The author is giving away 5 copies of her book, and a $20 Amazon gift card just for visiting and checking out this interview today.  That’s what the rafflecopter giveaway below is for!  So, go ahead and enter!  (Please note: There is no purchase necessary for the raffle below.)

Cheryl Goldman is a stay-at-home mother of two: a boy, and a girl.  Her husband, Kevin, is a successful businessman who owns his own marketing firm.  From the outside, all looks perfect.  Too perfect, perhaps.  When we scratch the surface, we find Cheryl wearing too much makeup on some days and rather overlarge shades that make her look every bit the fierce diva.  Yet, she’s not.

Cheryl allows the unthinkable to happen more and more in her life.  Her children watch her.  Her BFF watches her.  Her parents watch her.  Yet, no one steps in…not even Cheryl speaks up for herself.  Her daughter is disgusted.  Her son is angry at both of his parents.  Her father knows Cheryl’s not trying to make any waves.  Cheryl’s mother?  Thinks the world rises and sets on Kevin.

Will Cheryl wake up and realize she shouldn’t be the object of abuse because someone else is having a rough go of it?  Will her children forgive her?  Or, simply walk away from it all?

Go behind the scenes of this upper middle-class African-American successful family and see how the foundation of things was set and how it all slowly unraveled.

If you want more, check out my full book review on my author page.

#DiversityRocks in 2016: Black History Month

I am a woman of color. But, I refrain from saying it…out loud. I don’t need to. One glance at me and you know my ethnicity. It’s been like that all my life. It just takes one little look. The blinds come down in a Bay Ridge barber shop. Shutting off the view of a super cool vintage model car display from my two young brown sons.

The shock when I — Rochelle Campbell — who recently traveled to Ireland and worked as a Marketing Director walk into an executive’s office and their mouth drops open (literally). All it took was one little glance.

Or, when “cute” little Black Face dolls were put on my desk facing me by my non-Black employer. I was supposed to put them up somewhere. I refused to even touch them and walked out of the office.  I was barely 22 years old at the time.

BlackFace Tin Metal

Being Black, African-American, Caribbean-American, Asian, Indian or any person of color means that every day you leave your house you are judged. Yes, judged. How you walk. The clothes you wear. Your erudition. Everything is used to assess/calculate/ascertain where you may fall in the scheme of things to those that view us.

It gets to the point where you just pause and wait for the non-Black person to enter the building first — without thinking about it. Why? Because you’re on automatic.

As children, we learned through osmosis how to function when in ‘mixed company.’ We added “Miss” or “Mister” before the first name of a non-Black person. Why? It was a sign of respect.

Purging all of these internal, unconscious learned behaviors is TOUGH. So, tough that sometimes we unwittingly pass it on to our children because it’s so ingrained within our own psyches.

However, I’m not telling my fellow people of color anything new…am I?

It is February 2nd, 2016. It is #BlackHistoryMonth. It is a time for reflection, growth, renewal. It is time for new things. It is time for #DiversityRocks.

It is about time something as simple as a doll, a child’s play thing, by the preeminent doll manufacturer in the world to make a doll that reflects little girls of color.

Barbie Diversity_Jan 2016

It seemed to start with the Ava DuVernay doll; a gift for an awards show.  However, the demand exceeded all expectations.  While this particular diversity change may be more founded on financial gain, it is a welcome change for hundreds upon thousands of households with children who are not White.

Ava DuVernay_Barbie

I’m going to wrap this up with one final thought (rant).  What the heck is wrong with #BlackGirlMagic?!

The Ava doll is #BlackGirlMagic!  It is empowering.  It is not a label depicting anything superhuman/supernatural.  It is not a rant at all against women of other ethnic origins, or races.  It is simply a way to complement ourselves about things we are proud of about ourselves; achievements we have made.

If a similar hashtag for other races of women are out there that are also magical — so be it.  My mother told me that imitation is the highest form of flattery…

Getting off my soap box now.

Rwandan_Ballet Dancers_BlkGirlMagic

Aren’t these young girls magical?  They radiate joy, confidence and a love of life! #BlackGirlMagic

Let Me Just Say This… A Quick Synopsis

This more-than-meets-the-eye urban fiction story introduces us to Cheryl Goldman an African-American woman who was not the apple of her mother’s eye.  Her Daddy loved her desperately but even he could not change how his wife felt about their youngest daughter.  Smart, talented and productive were all adjectives that perfectly describe Cheryl.  However, two other words are accomodating and unselfish.  In Cheryl’s attempt to secure friendship, love and favor her gentle efficiency did her more harm than good especially in the case of her husband, Kevin.  You can read my full book review here.

We’ll be tweeting, FB’ing and generally making a bit of a social media ruckus chit-chatting about Just Let Me Say This…!

Re-Jiggering the Ship

It’s truly fascinating how the mind plays tricks on us.  We think we are striving and pushing towards xyz goal, right?  And somehow, years pass and the goal is not realized.  We stop.  Scratch our collective head and wonder aloud what went wrong.

We review our steps.  That’s always the best way to go right?  But alas, we don’t see anything we’ve done incorrectly.  We begin looking around for *experts* who can direct us, help us to see what we may have missed.  We get bounced about as the expert suggests someone else.  Then, second expert waffles and redirects us yet again.  Finally, we arrive at an expert who stops the whole parade of silliness and states the problem.

What do we find out?  That we did all of the work.  We did what we were supposed to do.  We took the proper and necessary steps — for the wrong area/genre/niche!

turning ship around

The solution?  Do it ALL OVER AGAIN for the proper area of our goal.  Sheesh.

Life as a writer is challenging.  Heck, Life as a person is challenging!  LOL.

And how was your week?
