What Scares You?
So...what does scare you?Slasher flicks? Monsters that jump out at you? An American werewolf in a foreign country? Transylvania 6-5000? (Do any of you get that reference?) Mine would be ghosts. I watched the movie “13 Ghosts” between two fingers.

We watch all the monster movies we can. His favorite is “A Nightmare Before Christmas”. I prefer “Corpse Bride”. But there’s “Hocus Pocus”, “The Addams Family” (both movies), “Paranorman”, “Monster House”, “Hotel Transylvania”…wait, you say these aren’t scary?

True. They aren’t. But to us they add to the wonderfully ghoulish feel of decorations, atmosphere, and excitement that culminates in a night of tricks or treat. I usually have to make my son’s costume because he always picks something that isn’t store bought. This year he’s Sammy Lawrence from Bendy & the Ink Machine. Don’t know what that is? Here's a pic of him:

But Halloween is more than just scary movies. It’s origin goes all the way back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, when ghosts and spirits came out to haunt, and the Celts would appease the spirits by giving them treats. It’s fun and it’s scary, and the one night a year when we can all go a little morbid. Or be a slutty vampire hunter because hey, it's Halloween and I can show my almost cleavage all I want! Actually, no, I don't. I have to work.

To celebrate Halloween, and to thank you for visiting and reading my ramblings, I would like to give away a cute little bat pin! He's really cool. with black little gems in the body and a green gem for the eye. All you have to do to win is leave a comment on WHAT SCARES YOU? ...and an email address to contact you if your name is picked (by my wonderful helper Hadrian, aka son)! I promise not to spam you!! :-)

Welcome JN Moon & her Supernatural Children of Dionysus!
(Scroll to the end to see my Give-a-way!)
Hello JN! Welcome to Written Butterfly on this Halloween week! So tell me...
Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
For Anthony I wanted to take a regular guy and put him in the situation of becoming a vampire. Before we meet Anthony he is happy in his life, I’m interested in how we, as people handle adverse situations that are thrust at us. His development, emotionally and physically throughout the series is what I find interesting. It’s not all good he makes some bad decisions, and I love the dynamic of the reluctant hero. I wanted to show the darker side of vampires, the horror of the change, the challenges.
Q) Is this book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about it?
Yes, it starts with Anthony being turned into a vampire against his will by macabre vampires- they were based on the Eastern European vampires. The series tells the various misadventures that he gets reluctantly pulled into and again has to rethink everything he’s learned. It brings in new characters and as it progresses his supernatural world gets bigger.
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
Yes, it started off as a fun project after a friend and I did each other’s New Year’s resolutions. At the time I was studying to go to vet school as a mature student and working full time so it was a way to be creative. After a few years I realised I wanted to write but I’m really glad for my time working with nurses and vets- that’s why there’s some science in my books
Q) What do you think is your strongest asset as a writer?
I hope engaging readers and taking them into another world, away from the stresses of life. There’s some deeper meanings in my books behind the conversations. You might pick it up and that’s awesome. Also we all go through adversity and it’s how it shapes us in the long run even if we don’t handle it well.
…what is your weakest factor as a writer?
Weakest wanting the bad guys to have redeeming qualities, for having a reason. I guess I always look for the good in people. As young children or babies no one is evil and not everyone has the insight or comprehension to change themselves.
Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
Yes definitely . There’s no alpha billionaires or submissive or bratty heroines. I want to take ordinary people and put them into extraordinary circumstances and write about what happens.
Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?
I plan a lot! I use Pinterest to get a person who looks or feels right and I write a bio on all my characters. When I’m in Bath where my series is based I often expect to see Anthony and the others because I know them so well! Imagine my disappointment lol…
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
The series does have an overall arc but all books can be read individually. I don’t leave cliffhangers I don’t think that’s fair but there are hooks. I have another series, book one about to launch and a new series next year. I cross over some characters betweens the series creating a supernatural universe! That’s a fun thing to write, and read hopefully!
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
I’m writing book 4 called The Seven Princes of Hell which is lots of fun and tons of research. What that has to do with Anthony is really exciting, seeing him change and become stronger.
I also have book one in a new series, The Blood Moon series with the mc, Emma. This one is about werewolves, dragon shifters and Orcadian folklore set in Wychwood forest in the UK which is said to be the most haunted forest in the world! Wychwood beer is awesome too btw!
I'm also releasing the box set for the first three books in Always Dark Angel series for Halloween and this will include the bonus book Grimoire which isn't for sale!

Blast from the Past...Spotlighting "The Chef & the Ghost of Barthololmew Addison Jenkins" for Halloween!
(Scroll to the end to see my Give-a-way!)
Halloween, 1982. MTV is new, poodle perms are the rage, and life just might be getting better for Alma Kobel. Her ugly divorce is final at last. Her new job as chef at Bright Day School’s gorgeous old estate is actually fun. But the place is haunted—and so is Alma’s apartment.Bartholomew Addison Jenkins’ ghost has been invisibly watching Alma for months. When he materializes one night, Alma discovers Bart—as he likes to be called—has talents she couldn’t have imagined … and a horrifying past. Can you have a one-nighter with a ghost? And what happens if you decide one night is all you want—and end up ghosting him? Some spirits don’t like taking “no” for an answer.
Q & A
1. Did you plot this book out or write wherever an idea took you?
I am ALWAYS a “pants-er.” I get my setting and my characters together first, and then I watch the movie in my head. Because I live near Sleepy Hollow, the part of The Chef and the Ghost of Bartholomew Addison Jenkins that involves a local legend was with me from the beginning, but the rest of it just evolved as the characters interacted.
2. What was your hardest scene to write in this book ?
I write poetry and young adult novels under another name. This was my first grown-up romance, so I’d never written a really steamy sex scene before. Lots of blushing ensued. I have since lost my—ahem—virginity.
3. Did you hide any secrets or Easter Eggs?
This book is set in the Northern part of the Hudson River Valley, but much of it is based much further south: Nyack, NY in the 1980’s. Anyone who lived there then will recognize a lot!
4. Since the publication, what would you say has improved in your writing?
I had a great editor on The Chef and the Ghost, and I’m still very proud of it. I think I write slightly more streamlined prose now—and I’ve stopped blushing when my characters need to hop into bed!
5. Do you believe a book cover plays an important role in the selling process?
Absolutely. Those of us at Evernight Publishing are super-lucky to have Jay Aheer! What a pretty, golden cover she made me!
6. Any advice you would like to give to your younger self?
It’s okay to write a grown-up ghost story!
EXCERPT
When Alma opened the door to her apartment, her stomach sank. A dim square of light flickered in the hall outside her bedroom door. Yikes! Was I actually dumb enough to have left candles burning? She was scolding herself for having been dangerously spacey when she realized that the light from her room did not come from any sort of flame.
It came from Bart. He was standing beside her bed in his high-collared, loose-fitting shirt and his knee britches. And that was … not really strange at all. Just the friendly, resident ghost. No danger of burning down the house. A relief—and Alma had to be honest with herself—a pleasant surprise.
“Good evening, m’lady,” he said.
Alma opened her mouth to say hello back—and burped, instead. A Garbage Pie burp was an impressive burp. “Oh, wow. Excuse me.”
Bart chuckled as she dropped her purse in the chair next to her dresser.
“Rich dinner?”
“A Garbage Pie,” she said. “It sounds awful, but it’s—you know what pizza pie is, right?”
“The previous residents of this apartment ate little else. I know well what Garbage Pies are,” he said. “I do not fear them.”
Then he stepped in front of Alma and slipped his arms around her, something else that should have been shocking but wasn’t. Just the resident ghost, after all. The resident ghost who can really kiss. Bart’s touch tingled with cold fire.
“Well, hello,” Alma said.
“I missed you,” said Bart, then he put his mouth over hers and kissed her. She felt something feathery—his chest touching hers—and she nearly dissolved into it. His tongue was cool in her mouth, and full of sparks. He tasted almost sweet.
Alma stepped back for a moment and looked into his bronze-flecked eyes. They were almost exactly level with her own as they stood facing each other. Bart kissed her again, and his mouth poured her full of prickly, contagious electricity. It was hard to pull away from him. He slipped a hand into her sweater under her bra, and cupped her left breast.
“Let me,” he whispered. “Please.” His fingers were gentle. He found her nipple and stroked it. “Oooo,” he said.
A bolt of electricity shot through Alma and landed between her legs.
He kissed her again, harder, still playing with her nipple. Another sharper electric bolt. She stepped backward to lean against the wall, feeling the weightlessness of him glittering on her, yet feeling his shirt and the buttons of his knickers. His hips rubbed against hers, but they weren’t hips, exactly. They were neither firm nor soft. They were just there—and fiery. He pressed against her and didn’t at the same time.
“Wow. Maybe I should, um, brush my teeth,” she said at last. His hand was still on her breast, but then he let go.
“If you like,” he said.
Alma realized she was trembling as she tried to steady herself for the walk to the bathroom. I’m about to… I don’t know, but whatever it is, I’m about to do it with a ghost. If we actually can manage to… Well, at least I’ve still got my IUD… But that was silly. How could a ghost get you pregnant?
Back in the bedroom, Bart had lit the candles and was sitting on her bed. He smiled as she walked toward him, and his bronze-brown eyes glowed in the candle light. He’d taken his hair out of its queue and it flowed like a shadow over his shoulders, which were just slightly translucent.
“When you kissed me last night, the lights in this whole house went out,” said Alma. “And then you disappeared. But tonight…”
“That won’t happen again. Can’t you tell? I’ve been practicing,” said Bart. He was unbuttoning his shirt. His chest was luminous, of course, but also very well-muscled. There was a small, odd scar over his heart—just a few inches across.
“Practicing?” said Alma.
“Not on anyone else, don’t worry,” said Bart, and his face lit up, too. He was smiling. “This is all a matter of control, just as it is in the flesh.” He chuckled. “It has been so long…” He tossed his shirt on the floor. “Come here, my dove.”
My dove.Alma sat next to him, and he pulled her sweater over her head and then gazed at her. “Oh, my,” he said. “You are ravishing.”
“No one ever called me ravishing before,” said Alma as Bart fumbled with her bra.
“Thesethings,” he said. “I have no experience…”
“Hooks … in the back,” she said. He found them and gently slid the straps off her shoulders.
“So I see,” he said. “Lay back.”
She did, and Bart tugged gently at her leggings.
“A button and a zipper. Over on the side. You know what a zipper…”
But Bart already had undone it. “I do keep up, you know. Zippers are simpler,” he said. He tugged off her leggings, threw them on the floor, and lay down on his side next to her, propped up an elbow. “Oh, my dear,” he said again, and bent over her breast. “I must…” He stroked her nipple again and then gently nibbled it.
Alma closed her eyes. It was like being surrounded by the opposite of “a greater darkness.” Bart ran his tongue down her stomach and Alma opened her eyes to see a silver line of sparks following it. Each one of them icy-hot. When he got to her panties, he pulled them down and opened her.

Meet the Writing Powerhouse Duo....Hamlett & Dare!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
A) We both have a crush on Robert Downey, Jr. and wondered what it would be like if his charismatic self were thrown into the path of a plucky romantic who suddenly finds herself working for him in his posh London office. Our supporting players in the storyline—including Henny’s kooky relatives—were a delight for us to develop because it’s consistent with the notion that the course of true love never runs smoothly. We’ve also respectively known a lot of kooky personalities we decided would be fun to work into a mystery about the cutthroat art world.
Q) Is this book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about it?
A) It’s a standalone title we’re very pleased with. If we were to do anything more, it would be a prequel involving Henny’s colorful, globe-trotting aunt.
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
A) Two things actually. The first is that although Jamie and I have been working together since 2012 and both live in Los Angeles County, we have spoken only once on the phone and have never met in person. We worked on this novel in the same way we have worked on our plays; specifically, I write a scene/chapter and send it to her with a list of “reveals” for the next scene/chapter she’ll be writing. In between we do lots of brainstorming on what the characters might do next. Our writing styles are so seamless that not even my husband can tell our writing apart. At no time during WYWO’s development, however, did I reveal how the book would end because I wanted to keep her in the same mindset as our heroine. Talk about driving someone crazy! She didn’t find out the ending until I gave her the last two chapters (which I wrote myself). Secondly, the resolution of the plot is entirely plausible to anyone who wants to refresh their memory on history, geography and art. In other words, it could have happened just the way we described it.
Q) What do you think is your strongest asset as a writer? …what is your weakest factor as a writer?
A) For both of us, are strength is in dialogue and snappy pacing. Jamie had never written a play before but was an online screenwriting student of mine who could write absolutely hilarious patter among characters. At the time we “met,” I already had over 150 credits as a playwright and 16 years onstage as an actor and director. She was excited to learn the craft and we have since sold 7 plays that are doing quite well. When she told me that she had always wanted to write a novel, the time seemed auspicious to teach her out to do that, too. We currently have two more novels in the works as well as a mystery series. As for weakness, we’re both wildly impatient.
Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
A) The only time we bow to the pressure of someone else telling us what to do is when one of our play publishers asks us to develop a specific project for their target market. Otherwise, we’re 100 percent original in our mutual love of the written word. We like to write the kind of plots we like to read.
Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?
A) We may have a keen idea at the outset on what we want our characters to do with themselves as a story unfolds but we also have the wisdom to listen to them if they tell us they want to do something different. I suspect if we ignored them for any length of time while we were off doing something else, they would just go ahead and finish the book themselves.
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
A) The mystery series we’re noodling around will have sustainable, recurring characters. Now and again, we may have characters from a standalone book go “visit” another book but not to the extent that they detract from the plot du jour.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
A) Two that I can mention are Saving Captain Cupid (a chick-lit which is set in Seattle and features a Korean American heroine) and Silent Knight (a romantic suspense involving a lost suit of armor). Following the success of our Austenesque spoofs, Hyde and Prejudice, Cliffhanger Abbey and Séance and Sensibility, we may have some future silliness up our sleeves. As for me as a solo act, I am working on three new books (including one on the craft of playwriting), as well as 13 new scripts about famous women in history for the 365 Women A Year international database. Readers can learn more at www.authorhamlett.com .
WHILE YOU WERE OUT
By Christina Hamlett and Jamie Dare It’s one thing for Henny Tinker to think that her handsome and charismatic new boss, Geoffrey Bond, is way out of her league. The more she reflects on his secret trips and his uncanny ability to acquire never-before-seen artworks, the more she starts to suspect that he’s also – quite literally - out of her time-zone. Could it have something to do with the Scottish railway clock in his office that runs perfectly…in reverse? Is it his penchant for period outfits that supposedly coincide with the various themed costume parties he attends? Or has Henny simply been watching too many time-travel movies with her father and now seeing evidence of its existence everywhere she looks? Her first encounter with the dashing Brit occurs shortly after she has not only been made redundant at Foyles Bookstore and lost her flat but is forced to endure the humiliation of moving back home with her daft parents. When Geoffrey appears out of the blue and offers her a well-paying job as executive assistant at his posh London office, she soon finds that she can’t imagine a more exciting – and sensually agonizing – experience than to work in such close proximity to a man whose heart probably belongs to someone else. Against her better judgment, she begins reading deeper meaning into even his most casual flirtations and letting her imagination fantasize that being an indispensable employee is practically synonymous with getting engaged. Despite the fact that everyone around her – including her 80-year-old aunt – is enjoying a better love life than she is, Henny is determined to rise above her own klutziness and persevere against all odds. Nor is she dissuaded by the ongoing insinuations of creepy art assessor Edward Huber that her employer is somehow involved with international theft and fraud on the black market. If anything, it makes her all the more resolute to defend Geoffrey’s wealthy lifestyle and frequent disappearances – a goal that will be put to the ultimate test when her dreamy mystery man vanishes during their first romantic date at her flat. WHILE YOU WERE OUT is available in paperback on Amazon as well as digitally on Kindle, Kobo, iBooks, Barnes and Noble, Playster, Scribd and Tolino.

Thriller "Forgotten Rage" by Melodie Hernandez!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
It really was a work in progress; I knew I wanted conflict but a little romance and revenge. I wrote the book a few different ways before I settled on what I wanted. I had to give them struggles, fears, victories and back stories. I wanted people to relate to them throughout the book. Some personalities were based on people I’ve met and other I made up from scratch. It was a great experience to tie it all together for the book.
Q) Is this book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about it?
I’m hoping to start “The Forgotten files” Starting with Forgotten Rage, I’m currently writing the next Forgotten Pain, which has the majority of the characters back. I’m excited to further develop the characters from the first book but add a new conflict/crime
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
I named one of the bad guys in my book after a bully that bullied me in junior high and highschool. It felt good to get justice in my book.
Q) What do you think is your strongest asset as a writer? …what is your weakest factor as a writer?
My strongest asset is I write from the heart, I story tell because I recognize a lot of people like to not only read the story but experience it as well.
Weakest would be point of view. My editor had me rewrite a lot because I jump point of views which can be confusing and as a rookie writer I was unaware I was going it until my editor pointed it out….about a hundred times or more!
Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I try to be as original as possible.
Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?
The first book Forgotten Rage I wrote as the story came to me, no character profiles, no outline just as I found the time. This next book is more regimented, profiles, outlines, notes and much more research will be going into book 2.
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Even though the “series” would have a lot of the same characters, any reader could read the book separately and enjoy the story as is without having read any of the other books. But I’d love them to be enjoyed as a body of work.
Q) What are your upcoming projects? The next book is Forgotten Pain. I was thinking of rewriting the first novel I wrote but lost. The idea has stayed with me for over 20 years and I want to write it out even better and publish it as a stand alone book.

Germs of War by Ketan Desai!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
Some of the characters are based on people I know, others are dreamed up. As the story unfolded, I found slots for them and how they interacted with each other.
Q) Is this book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about it?
It did not start off as a series but ended up as one. In Germs of War, the rogue CIA agents are first introduced, though the main character is a female student. In the next book, the ex-agents get involved in China and its attempt to create a super-human race using cloning technology.
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
In many ways, Germs of War predicted 9/11. The book was written in 1998 when no one cared about Afghanistan. So the thought of terrorists based there mounting an attack on US was quite unfathomable to many. Yet that is what the book described, the only difference is that in the book, biological weapons were used.
Q) What do you think is your strongest asset as a writer? …what is your weakest factor as a writer?
Strongest asset is knowledge of science since I am a scientist and a physician. It is very easy therefore to write about Sci-Fi. Weakest factor is writing about romance.
Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I’m original. No point becoming the Walmart of writers.
Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?
Mix of both. I start with a few basic characters but then introduce others as needed.
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
I started off writing Germ of War as a stand-alone book, but with science becoming more out of control by the day, decided to make it a series by using science fiction to highlight the dangers ahead.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
The next book deals with China’s attempts to create a super-human race by creating designer babies. But, the Chinese find out what the poet Robert Burns meant when he wrote “the best laid plans of mice and men gang aft a-gley (often go wrong)”
Blurb:
What if ISIS had biological weapons? This nightmare scenario was published in Germs of War first in 1999, which predicted 9/11. A fast-paced amalgamation of science, international intrigue with rogue CIA agents battling terrorists, and politics. And a lonely student who can thwart it all. Will she be able to?

Sci-Fi Author A. Nation visits today!

Q) Is this book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about it? - My latest book is The Takers. It is the 8th book in my sci-fi series and the fourth book in the scifi detective series. Every city, like today, has a problem with the homeless. Unfortunately, in my story, they are taken advantage of by greedy people to. work in the mines on Mars. Even Whistleblowers in Washington D.C. are turning up missing. When one man returns dead in a cargo ship, Detective Blackhawk is placed on the case.
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book? - The detective is a Navajo descendant. He once chased his suspect to Mars and met a young alien who wasn’t supposed to be on the Moon.
Q) What do you think is your strongest asset as a writer? …what is your weakest factor as a writer? - My strongest asset is I have lots of time to write. I’m retired. Grammer is my weakest factor, that’s why I have beta readers/editors. Although I am getting better.
Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want? - I write for enjoyment and create an interesting story that will keep them interested to the end of the book.
Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write? - Being as this is at the end of the series, my characters are already developed. However, the new ones that add to the story, are described as I write.
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?- Each book stands on its own, but it helps to read them in order. I write Realistic Fiction so some of the younger characters mature, just like in life.
Q) What are your upcoming projects? - Nanowrimo, of course. This will be my fourth urban fantasy, but I’m going to start with a new character. As soon as that’s done, I’ll continue the next story for my established character.

“How did you find the body?” Alex asked.
Al looked at the security officer and back at Alex.
“We, Joe and I, were unloading the crates closest to the exit when we heard a noise, kind of like a ‘thud.’ I went to the back of the containers and saw a hand on the floor. I called for Joe to help me and we pulled a crate out of the way. The body was laying there between two of the boxes. He was cold as ice. There’s no heat back in here since there aren’t any perishables while shipping back to Earth. This is an auto driven craft with one pilot.”
“Where is the pilot?”
“He’s down on the tarmac waiting for us to release him,” the STSO said.
“Jaxon, as soon as you record the scene here, go down and talk to the pilot,” Alex said and turned to the security officer. “Okay, show us where he’s at.”
Jaxon carried their I.D. kit as they walked the length of the fuselage, stripped of passenger seats, entertainment monitors, and service carts. This was a cargo ship. Most of the crated cargo lined up five rows by the distance of the floor. They arrived in the tail section near the last row of freight. Alex noted the out-of-place crates left after the crewmen had discovered the body behind the ore containers. The STS Officer pointed Alex toward the body.
Jaxon took some photos with his comphone and sent them to his and Alex’s office email. He pulled out the Finger Recorder and scanned the man’s lifeless hand and fingers.
“Note, a male about thirty, shaggy brown hair, thin, and calluses on his hands,” Jaxon said, examining the body. “Abrasions on his forehead that appeared to have healed some time ago.”

Troy Christensen Chats About his novel, The Tome!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
Ironically, my story took shape from a dream I had. I also based the main character on myself a little bit, at least in the beginning of the book.
Q) Is this book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about it?
The Tome is a standalone story. However, several people have mentioned that it might be an interesting prequel to a novel. So, maybe one day, I’ll write more books based on this short story.
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
Throughout the story, I sprinkled a few references to other well-known books, such as Lord of the Flies.
Q) What do you think is your strongest asset as a writer? …what is your weakest factor as a writer?
My strongest assets are my imagination and descriptive voice. My weakest factor would be relearning the rules of grammar. Unfortunately, it’s been a long time since I graduated from college!
Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I strive to give the readers an original story with exciting plot twists!
Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?
When I write my stories, the characters come alive with each sentence I put on paper. Oftentimes, I won’t even know a single fact about a character until I sit down and start typing. Suffice it to say, I’m a pantser author.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
I have three full-length novels that I am trying to complete. They’re part of a YA sci-fi trilogy. I also have half a dozen short stories swirling in my mind at any given time!
Blurb:
Nerdy teen Jimmy Jason spends most of his school day hiding from his tormentors behind a fortress of books. In need of a change of scene, he ventures out to a new bookstore believed to cast a darkness around town. And it’s within these walls where he discovers an ancient tome. Buried in its pages are magical secrets on how to manipulate the minds of others. Will Jimmy choose to use his power for good, or to exact revenge?
Author Bio:
In 1980, Troy published a little book called Phantasm Adventures. Perhaps 50 copies of the game were printed. Phantasm Adventures is a role-playing game with a unique set of rules that include personal and racial statistics allowing for equal play of huge giants to tiny sprites. With more than 200 skills and dozens of professions, it’s a rich and complicated game system. The magic casting system is utterly unique with no two wizards in the game being alike. There are 12 circles of magic with each having ten or more spells.
In 1984, Troy wrote his first adventure module for V&V called The Devil's Domain. The adventure centered upon a demonic figure trapped in another dimension trying to escape to Earth and a group of stalwart heroes trying to stop him. The following year, he released a compendium of super villains for V&V called Most Wanted III. And finally in 1986, he released his third and last V&V adventure called The Dawn of the Devil.
Troy worked with every major game publisher including TSR, Steve Jackson Games, Iron Crown Enterprises, and Different World Magazines. He wrote expansions, modules, and map sets for the Japanese.

Q & A with Sondra Bateman!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
I really didn’t have to dream up the dynamics. Because I write historical/literary fiction that borders on biography I get to write about the crazy things that people have done. People think that we’re different now. I’ve come to realize that we really haven’t changed, which I’m glad about. If we had, then there’d be nothing to write about, plus we all know the adage that truth is stranger (or more entertaining) than fiction. Well, it is true.
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
I wrote the story of William Sinclair. He’s the man who had Rosslyn Chapel (of The DaVinci Code fame) built. What’s interesting is how close he was to the Norwegian crown. He could have become King of Norway, but he never did, and I think I know why which I go into detail of that in my novel.
Q) What do you think is your strongest asset as a writer? …what is your weakest factor as a writer?
I’ve had people comment that my dialogue sounds authentic, and then they ask how I manage to do it. I know it sounds odd, but I hear the conversation in my head and then put it down on the paper.
Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I actually write the way the story played out in real life. I just embellish the events with dialogue and extra little things here and there.
Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?
Nope, most are already fully formed when I get my hands, or fingers, on them.
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Each will be stand alone, sort of. Actually it depends on how long, or complex the story is.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
There are too many to count! I’m in the middle of writing my duology, and I’m already beginning research on the story after that.

In a world full of political machinations of the Scottish Royal court, this novel follows the life of William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Orkney, 1st Earl of Caithness, and Baron Roslin through his life. Starting with him when he was twelve years old and standing before King Eric of the Kalmar Union to request the right for him to be recognized as the Earl of Orkney, to the marriage of James Stewart, the third King of Scotland with that particular name. From the assassinations of James I and James II to the Black Dinner and its fallout, William Sinclair was privy to many of the events that Scotland, England, and the Kalmar Union went through, for Sinclair while being the highest ranked noble in Norway, could have become its king if he presented himself to the nobles in Copenhagen.
Excerpt
“Roslin? What are you doing here?”
Gathering my wits about me, I took a deep breath. Before I could answer, Alexander Sutherland addressed the soldier behind me. “Return his sword. He is the uncle of the murdered Earl.”
Turning, I reached out my hand. The soldier who still held my weapon fumbled for it while trying to apologize. When I was finally alone with the laird I frowned. “I would not have him, or any of the other guards punished. They must have come from the Douglas lands for none recognized me.”
“I should have made sure that the soldiers guarding the camp know who are with us. Apparently none of them did.” The laird indicated one of the chairs with a sweep of his hand. “I though you were still at Roslin.”
Taking a seat, I shook my head. “Angus came by during Advent and he stayed through Epiphany. It was only after he left that I heard about this. I’m not all that surprised, because the Dowager mentioned about the grumblings within the clan.”
“Angus is here.”
“Really?” This was different. “From his actions when he was at Roslin, I would have thought he returned to his Earldom.”
Sutherland gave a short laugh. “That? Roslin, that is how he learns what is happening around him.”
“Oh….” Somehow I pushed my surprise to the side. “Who is in the castle?”
Alexander moved around the table and leaned forward so that his hands were flat on its surface. “You know that the King is at Stirling and being controlled by Livingston, and maybe even the current Douglas. Right now it’s Lord Chancellor Crichton.”
Slouching in my chair, I closed my eyes. “Do you think he was the one responsible?”
“The clan really doesn’t care at this point. They’re out for blood.”

Featuring Katherine McIntyre's Tribal Spirits Book One!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
I’ve always loved shifter stories as well as the enemies to lovers trope, so Dax and Sierra just came naturally. Dax appears a cocky wiseass, the exact sort of type to drive serious, responsible Sierra crazy, but as she discovers more of his depths, they share a whole lot more in common than they first believed.
Q) Is this book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about it?
Forged Alliances is the first in the Tribal Spirits series, which revolves around the Red Rock and Silver Springs packs in Ricketts Glen. One of the powerful Tribe members has gone rogue, bringing trouble and devastation to the region. However, the shifters who live in this land aren’t about to back down against this threat against their home, no matter the cost.
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
Fun fact: the state park, Ricketts Glen, featured in the Tribal Spirits series is an actual one in Central PA, known for its waterfalls.
Q) What do you think is your strongest asset as a writer? …what is your weakest factor as a writer?
My greatest strength as a writer is snarky banter and getting into the deep point of view with my characters. I also tend to do fight scenes well. My biggest weakness with writing is complex plotting and worldbuilding. I get so sucked into the characters and their emotions that I sometimes forget some of the important details—which is why my beta readers and critique partners are essential!
Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I try to bridge both! I give plenty of spice and HEAs in my romance stories, however I also push forward to include diverse characters, women in roles of power, and my personal brand of snark.
Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?
I usually get a vague feel for a character before I launch into the story, and they develop as I go. Since I usually feel my way through stories, I get a sense of them and how they react to the situations I throw at them pretty quickly.
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Each book in the series has a standalone love story and conflict, but each one builds towards the big overplot that will be confronted and resolved in the final book of the series!
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
I’m currently working on the second book in my Discord’s Desire series, Hypnotizing Beat. I just finished up writing my third book in the Tribal Spirits series, Forged Contracts, and I’m going to get started on the fourth book in the series soon, Forged Futures.

Sierra and Dax’s alliance is already rocky. He’s a cocky wiseass, and she doesn’t put up with bullshit. So, when a mating bond appears between them, it threatens to send them both running.
Sierra Kanoska fought hard for her position as wolf alpha of the Red Rock pack, and intruders in her territory receive the full brunt of what her claws, fangs and smarts can accomplish. So, when Dax Williams, de facto alpha of the Silver Springs pack, pays an unwelcome visit, Sierra’s ready to toss him out. However, the pack elders sabotaged Dax’s fight for alpha against his brother, driving him from his lands. Sierra hates underhanded crap like that, so she agrees on an alliance.
As they work together, she witnesses an alpha who wants to do right by his pack, not just a cocky wiseass. Their growing attraction blazes hot, but the moment she and Dax lock lips, a mating bond emerges. Sierra sure as hell isn’t ready to share that intimate connection with a stranger and the thought of forever sends Dax running.
Before they can talk, the Tribe commanding the East Coast shifters arrives to settle the dispute. Dax and his brother’s punishment for their pack’s civil war is a free-for-all on their lands. Not only does he have to defeat his brother, but any challenger in the region. Despite Dax and Sierra’s initial resistance, his wily charm relaxes her control-freak tendencies while her steadfast support bolsters his strength. Yet every new opponent places their newfound relationship under siege—one misstep, one wrong blow in the ring, and Dax could leave in a bodybag.

Excerpt
Sierra was spoiling for a fight.
She slammed into the Beaver Tavern’s door shoulder first, amber light spilling on her, and the scent of tobacco threading through the air when she entered. Wooden planks creaked under her boots from her tread as she quick-stepped to the oaken bar on the opposite side. Three things lit her match without fail—abusive assholes, idiots who didn’t use their turn signals and unannounced shifters moving in on her territory.
Inside, her beast snapped at its confines, begging her to shift, to take to the woods and keep running, never turning back. Except leaving wasn’t an option, not since she’d become alpha of the Red Rock pack years ago. Sounds of the bar in full swing washed over her, from the shouts and laughs of the regulars to the clunks of heavy pint glasses hitting the tables.
“Sierra, what’s up your ass?” Jeremiah called over from a table as a lazy smile reached his hazel eyes. Her Red Rock pack filled the whole bar, since humans kept their distance from predominantly shifter areas, and in this part of Pennsylvania few would come strolling in.
She flipped him the middle finger. “Shut it, Streaky,” she called back, garnering a couple of laughs from the pack. After Jer had gotten caught buck-ass naked, stumbling out of at least three different tents at the last Fourth of July party, the nickname had stuck. Sierra beelined to where Raven operated the taps, dispensing dew to this loud and crazy lot. Sierra’s body brimmed with unspent tension. Fight, fight, fight pounded through her, an untamable urge, and her wolf prowled inside her, restless. As alpha, her rank heightened her tether to the beast, already one step away from primal.
“Shot of whiskey,” she growled, needing to regain control. Needing the reset before she engaged with her pack. Raven blinked at her, those deep-set eyes warm and welcoming as she reached for the bottle of Jack. Strands of the bartender’s thick black hair drifted over her shoulder as she passed the drink over.
“Boss, go for the whole thing,” she said with an amused smile. The bottle hit the counter with a thump, reminding Sierra of the massive inventory piling up in the back. The day she’d won the title of alpha, she’d also earned herself ownership of this dive.
“Thanks,” she muttered before unscrewing the cap and taking a swig. The amber liquid sloshed around the bottle, burning once the whiskey hit her lips. She soaked in the bliss, in the five-second distraction from the territorial urges pushing her toward an aggression-fueled pissing contest. Her skin prickled, hackles raised from her earlier run—from the note that had turned this day from sunshine-speckled to hellish.
She sucked down another swig, the burn of alcohol spreading through her before she returned the bottle to the counter. One deep breath, then two, and she started to feel normal again. The beast snarled but backed down. Sierra plopped onto one of the worn leather stools and leaned forward, elbows digging into the polished oak counter. Her tank top was glued to her chest and her thick obsidian locks plastered to her cheeks and her neck. The sweltering heat that swept the region wasn’t helping her mood in the slightest.
A hand snaked out in front of Sierra to tug the bottle away as the seat beside her creaked.
“Need to go a couple of rounds?” Finn asked, his dark eyes dancing with amusement at her barely contained rage. “Whatever’s got your wolf snapping is hitting the rest of us too. I’m assuming a summer squall’s brewing.” The beta of her pack dominated the stool, tall, with the lithe muscle of an MMA fighter—fitting, since he taught kickboxing classes six days a week. He’d been her sparring partner for years, and even as a teenager, the bastard had played dirty, sand in the eyes and all.
“Storm’s ready to touch down,” Sierra muttered, slumping onto the counter. When it came to her pack, she made calls without hesitation—every member from the eldest to the littles had complaints, problems to solve or disputes and fights she managed. However, this problem was in a whole different category. “We’ve got new neighbors, and they’re of the pain-in-my-ass variety.”
“Neighbors like us?” Finn asked, beckoning Raven. She sauntered over, eyebrow lifted at being summoned that way. He tilted his head toward the taps, and she rolled her eyes before pouring him a pint. Sierra withheld her smirk, entertained by watching big dominant guys like Finn getting sassed back. All those powerful wolves didn’t make dating easy though, especially being alpha. As much as the guys liked to talk the talk of handling a woman more dominant than them, few could walk the walk. She swallowed age-old bitterness of the lesson she’d learned the hard way.
Before she could respond to Finn, the door of the bar creaked open, drawing her attention.
She hadn’t even turned around before her wolf started yanking at the chain, begging to come out. The scent hit her nose at once, not the familiar one of her Red Rock pack, but this unfamiliar one that brushed her fur the wrong way. Claws pricked out from her nails before she could stop herself, and she wasn’t the only one. A low growl emerged beside her as Finn picked up the foreign scent.
“Mislabeled the sign,” a cocky voice called from the door. “Should read ‘Doggie Daycare’ with the number of pups packed into this place.” The man’s eyes twinkled at his less-than-funny joke, and an amused grin spread on his face. He walked in with a graceful stride, the liquidity of his movements betraying his kind, as if a cat could ever disguise its nature. Chairs squeaked as folks leaped up, teeth bared and claws out as her Red Rocks prepared to rush the intruder. A blonde chick and a long-limbed toothpick of a guy strode in behind him with similar refinement to their movements.
Sierra barely controlled herself as she forced her claws back into place. Out of everyone, she had to rein in her beast because she carried the responsibility of an entire pack on her shoulders. “You’d figure with so many pups under one roof, a kitty cat wouldn’t be stupid enough to wander in.”
“Oh, you know, curiosity and all that.” His white teeth gleamed against his tanned skin. “You folks give the warmest welcomes to newcomers.”
