A Day In The Life Of Chloe Humphrey from the Appleseed Creek Mysteries

I have another story to share with from Dru’s Book Musings to share with you with her permission. Be sure to check out Dru’s site. Enjoy

I’ve just moved to Appleseed Creek, Ohio a few days ago, and I already have a roommate but not because I wanted one. I’m not sure how it happened. I was driving my Siamese cat Gigabyte and me down a country road to a rural community when we came across teenaged Becky Troyer. Two unseemly-looking thugs were harassing her. I offered her a ride as an escape from them, and the next thing I know she told me she was moving in…and that she ran away from her Amish family.

How could I turn her away when I was so much like her when I was a teen, estranged from what little family I had and seeking a new home when the Greens took me in? I had my reasons to leave my family, and I’m sure Becky had hers. She was alone and needed help. I gave it to her. However, the question nagging me at the back of my head was, “Why did Becky leave the Amish community?” I planned to ask her when the time was right.

As I dressed for the day, I decided to bring up the topic over breakfast. I stepped into the kitchen to find enough food on the kitchen table to feed a college football team. Becky piled pancakes, waffles, bacon, eggs, ham, and sausage on heaping serving trays. She cooked like she had her large Amish family to feed. I’d tried to tell her there were only two of us—three if you count Gigabyte—and we would never possibly eat everything she made. It was no use; she just kept baking, broiling, and frying. My cat had no problem with Becky’s culinary ambitions and transferred his feline loyalties from me to Becky the moment she picked up a spatula. How can my dry cat foot that smells like feet compete with fresh country ham?

While aware of Becky flying around the kitchen, double checking that each dish was perfect, I ate what I could of the meal. She was a beautiful and sweet girl. Not a rule breaker. I doubted she’d even jaywalked across the town’s square.

She finally took the seat across from me at the table. “I’m going to try some new places to look for work today.”

“Good. Keep trying. Someone will give you a job.”

A black cloud crossed her face. “The Amish won’t. They don’t want anything to do with me.”

My question about her leaving the Amish was on the tip of my tongue, when she said, “My brother Timothy will be over tonight to faucet on the back of the house. I hope you don’t mind.”

I swallowed, remembering how I made a fool of myself in front of her handsome brother the night we met. “Sure. That’s fine. It’s nice of him to help out.”

She studied my face. “You’re all red. Is something wrong?”

“Nope. All good.” I stood, needing to compose myself. Now was not the time to ask Becky my questions. “I’ll see you tonight after I get home from work.”

“Great! I will have a big surprise for you when you get home.”

I left without asking what that surprise was. In hindsight, I should have, I know that I should have…

Book of the Week

Welcome to Appleseed Creek, the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country, where life is not as serene as it seems.

While her Cleveland friends relocated to Southern California and Italy, 24-year-old computer whiz Chloe Humphrey moves with some uncertainty to Appleseed Creek to direct technology services at a nearby college. Her first acquaintance is Becky, an ex-Amish teenager looking for a new home.

While driving Chloe’s car, Becky collides with a buggy, killing an Amish elder. But what looks like an accident is soon labeled murder when police discover the car’s cut brake line.

Now, Chloe must take on the role of amateur sleuth to discover who the real intended victim was before the murderer makes a second attempt. Becky’s handsome Amish-turned-Mennonite brother, Timothy, a local carpenter, comes in handy along the way. With God’s help, they’ll solve the mystery that’s rocking this small community.

Five #Garden #Hacks

My garden is my favorite place to be. If I had a choice I would be working in the garden all day and every day. It’s a big reason why I wrote the Magic Garden Mysteries. From decades of gardening I have learned some simple tips to have beautiful plants and flowers all season long.

Vegetable garden at our farmPlant from Crocus to Chrysanthemum. Learn when certain flowers bloom in your area and plant accordingly so you have some in bloom all growing season.Plant after it rains. The very best time to plant just about anything is right after it rains. It’s when it’s easiest to dig in the ground and in the case of many seeds, you can just toss them on the wet soil and and they will sprout. Same goes for weeding. It’s easiest to weed when the ground is wet.Soak hard seeds overnight. Some seeds have very hard shells and its best to soak them overnight before sowing them into the ground. That way they were sprout much sooner. Some examples are nasturtium and morning glories. Read the seed packages to be sure.Vegetables need a lot of water. I have heard people complain that they don’t have success with veggie gardens. It could be because you’re not watering enough. When it’s very hot over 85 degrees F, you should really be watering twice a day and it’s best to water during the “cool” hours: early morning and night.Know every year is going to be different. One of the wondrous things about gardens is you never know exactly what they will look like until they bloom. What blooms can change from year to year. It depends on weather, when you planted certain plants or seeds, how old the plant is, and where the flower is placed. All of those make a difference in the success of a plant. I can honestly say my garden is different every year, but always beautiful.

Book of the Week!

A famous fiddler has been kilt. A magic garden’s left to wilt. Does Fiona Knox’s father hold the guilt? Will florist Fiona’s blood be spilt?

World-famous fiddle player Barley McFee arrives in blustery Bellewick, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, for a grand homecoming concert organized by jeweler Bernice Brennan. Fiona Knox, owner of the Climbing Rose Flower Shop, is starting to regret volunteering to help with the concert. Bernice is an exacting taskmaster, and Fiona has enough tension dealing with her parents, who have traveled from Tennessee to visit Fi and her younger sister, Isla, and to reveal a secret about Fi’s birth. But when Barley is found dead in his trailer during the concert’s intermission, and his death is shockingly tied to Fiona’s father, Fiona discovers there are more secrets surrounding her family than she realized.

Much to the chagrin of handsome Neil Craig, Chief Inspector of the County Aberdeen Police, Fiona delves into the case to clear her father’s name. To make matters worse, Fiona learns that Duncreigan, the magical garden that she inherited from her godfather, is dying. At some point during the concert, someone broke into the garden and cut the centuries-old climbing rose–the source of the garden’s magic–from the standing stone.

The stakes are higher than ever and Fiona could lose all that she’s grown unless she’s able to dispel this terrible curse and dig up the truth–fast.

Happy Birthday David!

Today is my husband David’s birthday! This week’s post is to celebrate David. I know I’m biased, but he’s the very best and I truly can’t imagine my life without him. He is kind, smart, talented, hilarious, strong, and definitely worth the wait. He met in our late thirties and got married in our forties, and I’m so grateful for him each and every day.

I have dedicated several of my books to David over the the years, but my favorite dedication can be found in Verse and Vengeance. I named the male lead in the series, David Rainwater, long before I met my David. It seems fitting to me that my most beloved hero to my readers would have have the same name as my husband.

Please join me in wishing David a Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, David! I love you always and forever!

Violet Waverly and Grandma Daisy’s Call

Have you tried the Magical Bookshop Mysteries yet? Get a taste of with this super short story below written in Violet Waverly voice just before the first novel, Crime and Poetry. This story was first shared on Dru’s Book Musings April 5, 2016, and I’m sharing it here with her permission. Be sure to check out Dru’s site. It’s fantastic!

****

One day, I was just minding my own business in the University library working on my dissertation in transcendentalist literature, and the next I was driving halfway across the country in an utter panic. I should back up. Like in any good story, I should start from the beginning.

It all started twelve years ago when I ran away from my hometown, Cascade Springs, New York, when I was seventeen. The day I left that little village, just minutes from the world famous Niagara Falls, I swore I would never return. You see, something happened there, something terrible, and I had to run away. My Grandma Daisy, my only living relative, still lives in the village and owns and operates Charming Books, a small independent bookstore that has been in our family for two hundred years. She’s made no secret of wanting me to return to the village and take over the shop. I can’t do that, not after what happened—which I can’t get into now. Trust me; it would take a whole book to explain.

Now back to the University library. I was at my favorite table with the world largest coffee, my laptop fired up, and all my notes and books. I was ready to jump into the world Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. What I wasn’t ready for was for my cell phone to ring and hear from my grandma.

The phone rang deep inside of my purse. The librarian sitting at the reference desk shot me a dirty look, and other students in the library shuffled their papers in irritation. I mouthed, “Sorry” and rifled through my bag set on turning the phone off, but when I saw the call was from Grandma Daisy, I knew I had to take it. With the librarian glaring at my back, I took my phone into the stacks to hide as I answered the call.

“Grandma?” I asked. “Is everything okay?”

“Violet, my dear, you have to come home.” Cough. “I’m not well. The doctors say it’s serious. They don’t know how much time I have left.”

“What?!” I cried.

On the other side of the stacks, I heard the librarian nosily clear her throat.

“What?” I asked in a harsh whisper. “What’s wrong?”

There was a long pause. “They aren’t completely certain yet. They’re running tests . . .” she trailed off.

“Can I talk to your doctor?”

“No.” She coughed again. “I think it’s best if you just come as quick as we can. There will time for doctors when you arrive. You will come, won’t you?”

“Of course, of course, I’ll come. I can leave in the morning,” I said, already mentally calculating all I had to do to leave. Of course, I had to go. There was no one on Earth more important to me than my grandmother.

“Good,” she said, sounding much more cheerful. “I will expect you tomorrow. Now, I really must go.” And she hung up.

I left that the library after that in a complete haze. The next morning, I was on the road before dawn, half mad with worry the entire drive from Chicago to Western New York.

So you can imagine my shock when I burst into Charming Books to find Grandma Daisy in perfect health. She tricked me into coming back to Cascade Springs! What kind of grandmother tricks her only grandchild? She tricked me to come back and take over the bookshop and accept my special heritage . . . whatever that is. That just wasn’t going to happen.

After being there less than a minute, I was determined to leave again until a dead body turned up. That changed everything, including the entire course of my life…
