A Reminisce to My Early Writing: FRIGHTMARES: A FISTFUL OF FLASH FICTION HORROR in 2011

I was chatting with an up-and-coming writer, and my Horror Writers Association mentoree, Kristal Shanahan about how it was when I started out writing horror fiction. I randomly pulled up one of my earliest acceptances and the anthology it was published in.

A 500-word story called “$2 Bust From an Estate Sale”

Here is an archive link to the Contest I submitted it to:
https://web.archive.org/web/20110714183745/http://horrorwritingcontest.com/Frightmares%20Flash%20Fiction.htm

I submitted it 3/11/2011. It was accepted 10/4/2011 and published six weekslater on 11/22/2011 (i.e. it sat in the submission queue over four times longerthan the time it raced from acceptance to publication, haha)

Unless you were one of the 5 “winners,” authors were not paid anything, whichwas fine with me back then.

It ended up publishing in the anthology FRIGHTMARES: A FISTFUL OF FLASHFICTION HORROR.

https://www.amazon.com/Frightmares-Fistful-Flash-Fiction-Horror/dp/0983433550/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

129 stories all crammed together in this book (I think they accepted prettymuch everything!)

Anyway, the subject of my reminisce: If I look through the Table of Contents, Ican say that hardly any of those authors involved are still writing/publishinggenre fiction now. BUT! It is incredibly fun and significant to recognize thosewriters who are still working at it today, writers I’ve become friends with orwhose work I admire. At time of this book’s publication in late 2011, I’d notknown a single person in the Table of Contents (except James S. Dorr, who I recognizedfrom BORDERLANDS 2 anthology). But now I look through it and exclaim: “Hey,wow, there’s:

James S. Dorr
Max Booth III
Lori Michelle
Cynthia Pelayo
Kevin David Anderson
Joe Mynhardt
Greg Chapman
Stan Swanson
and a couple others…

But again of the 129 writers, most, I believe, through lack of interest, otherlife obligations, perhaps death, are no longer involved in the craft (though Icould be wrong, as I spent zero time actually researching unfamiliar names).12-1/2 years later = time is fleeting, indeed!

Personally, what came of that tiny, insignificant sale for me was
1) It was a confidence booster, and
2) I became friends with the editor and publisher, Stan Swanson. The press wasDark Moon Books, and I started doing more work with them, and eventually thatwas where I was able to print my first anthology as editor. Later the presswent out of business, and I bought it, and rebranded it to my own purposes (andreleased all former titles back to the authors).

Anyway, nice to reminisce on these things once in a while! 😊

Announcing my second fiction collection—A GRAVESIDE GALLERY: TALES OF GHOSTS AND DARK MATTERS

 I’vebeen telling people individually, but I haven’t revealed publicly, so heregoes:

I’mabsolutely euphoric to announce that my second fiction collection will bepublished next November (2024) by Cemetery Dance!

CemeteryDance published my first collection, and I’m so happy to repeat the processwith them. Those who know me, know that I LOVE horror & dark fantasy shortfiction. I read it, speak about it, edit it, mentor it, publish it, andforemost write it.

Thiswill be a reprint collection with 19 stories I’ve published prior in suchvenues as Blumhouse (Random House), Cemetery Dance, Cemetery Gates, etc.

Tobe marketed as “themes of death and oblivion, with fantasy overtones: ghostsand quiet hauntings and things in the shadows, mixed with monsters, myth, andanthropomorphism.”

Comingfrom Cemetery Dance in Nov. 2024: A GRAVESIDE GALLERY: TALES OF GHOSTS AND DARK MATTERS

Thankyou and shout-out to acquiring editor Kevin Lucia!

(andto get in the holiday spirit, my 1st collection (THAT WHICH GROWS WILD) is still selling well at CD. Ihave extra print copies. For $10, I'll mail them signed to anyone in thecontinental USA—just message me!)

(Andthanks also to Norman Prentiss who got me started here!)

New release today byDark Moon Books!!

FANTASMAGORIANA DELUXE: A COMBINED EDITION OF FANTASMAGORIANA AND TALESOF THE DEAD

Edited by Eric J. Guignard and Leslie S. Klinger

###

First published in 1812, Fantasmagoriana has become one of the most seminalghost-story anthologies of all time.

Originally collected as a French translation of eight German-language tales, Fantasmagoriana famously led to the creation of suchworks as the horror-classic novel Frankenstein,the short story “The Vampyre” (a progenitor to the fantasy vampire genre), thenovella “Ernestus Berchtold; or, The Modern Oedipus,” the poem “Manfred,” andmore.

In 1813, theanthology was partially translated into English as Tales of the Dead, excluding three of the original stories whileadding in one new, and inspiring an even wider audience to delight in storiesof the ghostly and macabre.

Now, for thefirst time, both Fantasmagoriana and Tales of the Dead have been combined into one English-languagevolume, in this beautifully presented showcase by Dark Moon Books

Also included within are:

Original English translations by Anna ZiegelhofIntroduction by award-winning author Lisa MortonAnnotations by noted literary editor Leslie S. KlingerIllustrations, biographies, reading list,and more!

State of Horror Literature at the local Barnes & Noble (Chino Hills, CA)!

I stoppedin at the local Barnes & Noble (Chino Hills, California location) over the weekend(10/14/2023) and was pleased to see a strong showing of horror books!

There were three packed bookcases (although one was mislabeled as sciencefiction), each with six shelves. The amount of horror offerings seems greaterthan normal, presumably as a Halloween-season-push (i.e. over the Summer, itwas just two cases with a bit of overflow). Additionally, there were at leasttwo other stand-alone displays of horror books throughout the store.

I saw lots of friends’ names and exciting titles that are trending in thehorror community, and took some pics for posterity and to showcase my community!

There was tons of Stephen King, of course, filling 4-1/2 shelves of one case, butbesides him, no single author had more than one shelf. Darcy Coates had one shelf(with 17 different titles!), and Joe Hill about 1/2 a shelf (with 4 differenttitles), and Paul Tremblay about 1/2 a shelf (with 6 different titles), and SimoneSt. James about 1/2 a shelf (with 7 different titles).

There were also some of the standards such as Richard Matheson, Clive Barker, V.C.Andrews; Peter Straub; and Anne Rice (plus classics DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN, CARMILLA,PSYCHO, etc…. even THE MONK!). But everything else was a very wide assortmentof different contemporary (many indie) authors, and really a huge variety of offerings. I tip my hat tothe taste and careful selection by the store’s buyer.

Among some of the other titles I recognized and wanted to give a shout-out toare:

Cynthia Pelayo (LOTERIA);
Zoje Stage (BABY TEETH, WONDERLAND);
Victor Lavalle (THE CHANGELING);
Jonathan Maberry (PATIENT ZERO; ZOMBIE CSU; INK);
Stephen Graham Jones (THE ONLY GOOD INDIANS; DON’T FEAR THE REAPER; MONGRELS);
Alma Katsu (THE DEEP; RED WIDOW; THE FERVOR);
Philip Fracassi (BOYS IN THE VALLEY)
Elizabeth Hand (A HAUNTING ONTHE HILL);
Adam Nevill (THE RITUAL; LAST DAYS; NO ONE GETS OUT ALIVE);
Chuck Tingle (CAMP DAMASCUS);
John Joseph Adams (WASTELANDS);
Bentley Little (THE DISAPPEARANCE;
Eric LaRocca (THINGS HAVE GOTTEN WORSE SINCE LAST WE SPOKE);
Chuck Wendig (THE BOOK OF ACCIDENTS; BLACK RIVER ORCHARD);
Silvia Moreno-Garcia (MEXICAN GOTHIC; CERTAIN DARK THINGS);
Catriona Ward (THE LAST HOUSE ON NEEDLESS STREET; SUNDIAL; LITTLE EVE);
Josh Malerman (GOBLIN; BIRD BOX; SPIN A BLACK YARN);
Ronald Malfi (COME WITH ME; GHOST WRITTEN; BLACK MOUTH; THEY LURK);
Ellen Datlow (WHEN THINGS GET DARK; SCREAMS FROM THE DARK);
Lisa Morton and Ellen Datlow (HAUNTED NIGHTS); (including a short story fromEric J. Guignard!)
Lisa Morton and Leslie S. Klinger (GHOST STORIES);
Eric J. Guignard and Leslie S. Klinger, ed. (THE KING IN YELLOW);
Craig DiLouie (CHILDREN OF RED PEAK; EPISODE THIRTEEN);
Richard Chizmar (GWENDY’S MAGIC FEATHER; CHASING THE BOOGEYMAN);
Delilah S. Dawson (BLOOM);
Christopher Golden (ARARAT; THE PANDORA ROOM; ALL HALLOWS);
Grady Hendrix (HOW TO SELL A HAUNTED HOUSE; HORRORSTÖR; FINAL GIRL SUPPORTGROUP; THE SOUTHERN BOOK CLUB'S GUIDE TO SLAYING VAMPIRES; MY BEST FRIEND’SEXORCISM);
Lucy A. Snyder (SISTER, MAIDEN, MONSTER);
Sadie Hartmann (101 HORROR BOOKS TO READ BEFORE YOU'RE MURDERED);
V. Castro (THE HAUNTING OF ALEJANDRA);

and many, many others!!
Great work, B&N!
