EXCERPT:
. . . Doc was in the dressing room, relaxing for a few moments with a paper cup of bourbon. He figured he’d need it to get through this show.
Sam poked his head in. “Good news—the flyers worked, because the line to get in is around the block!”
“That’s good. Thanks, Sam.”
Sam ducked back out, leaving Doc alone. He sipped his bourbon, enjoying the few moments of peace before what he thought would be an unusually raucous show. As the ghostmaster, he always tried to stir up belief with an opening speech about “contact from the Great Beyond,” and “we cannot always control the spirits, so don’t be surprised if you feel a tap on your shoulder and there’s no one there.” But like nearly all professional magicians, Doc was a lifelong skeptic. He knew other folks wanted—no, needed—to believe in things like magic and ghosts, and he was happy to fulfill that need even if he’d never shared it.
That’s what he was thinking when the lights went out.
“Oh, for God’s sake,” Doc grumbled, figuring that the old Rialto’s wiring hadn’t been checked in a long time.
Something vaguely iridescent appeared at the corner of his vision. He turned to look, could just make out a glowing mass floating near the ceiling in one corner. As he watched, the wavering, oblong shape began to move slowly across the room . . .

EXCERPT:
. . . That second room was empty too, except for the wall shelves. Stacked there were dozens of big reels of film, some in cases, others lying overturned with their black and shiny innards spilling out. Katie used Foley’s flashlight to examine several of the reels. “Old movies,” she said to him, then smirked and added, “Real gems, too. From the fifties and sixties, looks like.” She read off a few titles: “Mothra. Killer Shrews. Day of the Triffids. Rodan. Son of Godzilla. The Horror of Dracula. The Blob. The Creature From—”
“I get the idea. In fact, I’d heard about it.”
“Heard about what?”
“Delbert Turner, the guy who owned this place forever, died a while back. When he had to close down, years before, and sell all his projection equipment—well, some said he couldn’t make himself get rid of the old movies. Or at least the scary ones.”
Katie narrowed her eyes. “What are you talking about, Billy?”
He let out a sigh. “It was a crazy thing. Notice I didn’t say he closed down—I said he had to close down. From everything I’ve heard, there was a rash of unexplained murders around here, along with . . . well . . . sightings.”

EXCERPT:
. . . Tool’s heap shambled to a halt in a storm front of track-shoulder dust, but Rodrigo was nowhere to be seen . . . until Breezer saw the big guy filling up the Beast’s driver’s side window, heard him yanking open the door, felt him rousting Breezer out of his ride with one fisted glove.
“You cut Tool off! You cut me off! That f**ker had better die, and I mean it!”
It was track law among Faults, like a commandment: You die, you lose.
Rodrigo’s voice was hot tar and broken glass. He was strong enough and mad enough to hold Breezer aloft one-handed. Breezer’s boots dangled a foot off the ground. Rodrigo’s breath would haze your eyes to tears and make you regret thinking of roadkill. His teeth ran in irregular crags that looked sharpened, maybe filed. One eye was fused almost shut by an old injury. The more visible eye had a huge black iris, like a dog’s. His shredded leathers were smoldering and Breezer could see him bleeding from a dozen fresh wounds. Rodrigo tore off his helmet with his other hand and smashed it down to spin in the gravel with that abrasive bucket sound helmets make. Close-up, Rodrigo’s exposed head seemed twice the size of Breezer’s own, upholstered in thick features, scar tissue, and crimson rage. His hair hadn’t grown back on one side after a previous race. His features had caught a lot of flak, and his skin looked like rubber bacon . . .

EXCERPT:
. . . Bobby hired him because he needed another monster picture. He always needs monsters. The studio hasn’t had a bona fide hit since the green guy with the gills. When you’re desperate, you turn to desperate people. People like Marvel Whitehead. Goddamn weirdo.” We were headed up into the mountains by this point, on our way to the desert. I wondered if I should put the top up. It was already oven-hot. “I was in the office when Bobby brought him in to pitch. He tried a bunch of bullshit on us. Rampaging insects made of human body parts. A country full of witches. Ghosts who weren’t really dead, and so on. Nothing clicked with Bobby. And then Marvel pulled the old, ‘Well, I do have one more thing, but I don’t know if it would interest you, people have never seen anything like it, I don’t know if audiences could stand it, blah blah blah.’ We both realized all that other bullshit had been a set-up for this big idea he obviously wanted to pitch. So Bobby says, ‘Come on, let’s hear it, already.’” I side-eyed new girl to see if the warm air had made her drift off to sleep. But no. She was paying close attention to me, hanging on my every word. “Marvel had an idea for a new kind of monster. One that people in the audience can’t escape, he says. That’s because it actually comes to life and crawls off the screen, he says. . .

. . . “Listen, Johnny, we don’t have much time,” Flat-top said. “As we feared, your people have exploded their weapon. Your atmosphere will soon grow too toxic for us. We are departing.”
“Okay, so, that’s good, right? For us? That you’re beating feet?”
“I can offer you sanctuary, but you must come back inside our vessel now.”
He reached for Johnny’s arm, but Johnny turned and—
His house—
It had grown, it had to be at least sixty feet high. It reached into the cloudless sky like something from Jack and the Beanstalk. His knees buckled and Flat-top grabbed at him as if to drag him back to the panel.
The porch door swung open with a mighty crash and there stood his own mother, now massive, terrifying, at least fifty feet tall! She scanned the horizon.
“Johnny!” she shouted, and the force of her voice knocked him flat on his back.
“Oh, my gosh, oh, gosh,” Johnny blubbered. “Ma! Ma, down here!” He waved his arms.
She froze and cocked her head. Then she bent over and stared down at him. The pores in her skin were like craters; her eyes were as big as the high school gymnasium . . .

The pores in her skin were like craters; her eyes were as big as the high school gymnasium . . .

“Doesn’t look open,” I said.
“It’s always open,” he said. “Wait here.”
He went to the dilapidated house next to the garage and banged on the screen door. An extremely frail, wrinkled man with a very small bald head—he appeared to be at least ninety years old—came to the door. Nick talked to him for a few minutes. A couple of times the man glanced in my direction, but by the way he was squinting I didn’t know if he could even see me.
Nick returned to the car and said, “Okay, he can take us.”
“He’s the tattoo artist?”
“Yeah, one of the best.”
“I don’t know,” I said.
“Trust me,” Nick said. “I’ve been coming here for years. You won’t be disappointed.”
My instincts told me this was a bad idea, but when had I ever listened to my instincts?
“What the hell,” I said. . . .

. . . Coles shook his head and finished his beer. Nearby was a mound of junk and, walking toward it, he tossed his can onto the pile. Turning, he encountered the woman in black.
“You are a skilled man,” she said. Her accent was heavy but her words were clear. Like they were being tattooed on his spine.
“Maybe it’s equal parts stupid sometimes,” he countered, careful not to get lost in those depthless eyes of hers. “But winning is good for business.”
“How so?”
“I build custom engines and cars so word gets around when you come in first.”
“And coming in first matters to you?”
“Better than getting kicked in the teeth.”
“Yes, I suppose that is so.”
He made a sound. “I wasn’t being that serious.”
“I see.”
“You’re new around these parts.”
“I’m Ymar, Ymar Montez.” She put out her hand. There was a large jade-and-stone ring on her finger.
They shook hands. “Good to meet you.”
“The pleasure’s all mine, Deacon Coles.”

EXCERPT:
. . . I remember when I first paid true attention to her. She had been there all along, hidden behind a bland misfit mask, but now she was taking on a different look, and that’s why I noticed her. I had a different look too, and it was the music that changed us, that brought us together like a magnet to steel. I had on my blue jeans with the big cuffs, deep enough you could have kept your lunch money in them, had on a tee-shirt with the short sleeves rolled up to show what biceps I had. In that area, I needed a little work, but listening to the radio, to that hard-driving music, had turned me bold, made me want to look like my heroes. I had my hair slicked back with enough oil to lube a bone-dry Buick transmission, duck tail lifted up in the back, not to mention some wispy sideburns. There Belinda was, coming down the hallway in her dark teal, half-sleeve swing dress with white fringe at the bottom and on the collar, her flame-red hair, mounded up and flared out wide, the collar fringe swishing across her sun-kissed collar bones, as she walked in men’s lace-up shoes. Instead of a purse, she had a guitar, an old, worn Martin D-45 with a leather strap . . .

. . . Hemmo slapped his beer down and open-mouth-ogled his war buddy and best friend. “What do you mean the fish spoke to you?”
Hemmo Saarsgaard was an acre tall compared to Doogie and as angular as a pike. They each wore a white t-shirt underneath leather jackets. Blue jeans and combat boots finished their ensemble. Doogie couldn’t help note that they were still in uniform albeit not the same uniform they’d worn in Korea. The difference was that back then they’d been part of something—part of something special. Now they were just—they weren’t part of anything. They were just drifting like every other war-aged man in America back in the Land of the Big PX with no focus and no prospects.
Doogie pushed the ennui aside and stood a little straighter. “Just as I said. It spoke to me.”
“I mean, did its lips move? Did it swim up to you and begin a conversation? I mean, come on, Doogie, you can’t just lead with, Did I tell you what the fish said?”
“It didn’t swim up. I caught it. I just told you. And no, its lips didn’t move. It spoke to me in my head.”. . .

EXCERPT:
. . . The Fighting Pumpkins cheerleaders took up their usual position along the wall. Iris produced a pack of cigarettes. About half the girls took one, while the other half brushed their hair, or checked their lipstick, or did any one of a dozen other things that signaled “too cool to be in class, yet still too cool for you” to anyone who happened to wander by. Andrea waved off the cigarette she was offered, choosing instead to rest her shoulders against the wall and watch the others with a possessive predator’s eye.
These were her Pumpkins. They wouldn’t be hers forever, would move on to the protectorates of other monsters, other ideal lives, but for now, for the moment, they belonged entirely to her. She didn’t have to share if she didn’t want to, and upon careful consideration, she found that she didn’t want to. Which was why it was such a problem when the hot rod roared up on the narrow stretch of asphalt behind the auto shop and the boy in the black leather jacket leaned out the window, grabbed Iris around the waist, and hauled her, shrieking, into the car . . .
