Book Rec: NO PLACE TO FALL by Jaye Robin Brown

No Place to Fall Goodreads Description:
Amber Vaughn is a good girl. She sings solos at church, babysits her nephew after school, and spends every Friday night hanging out at her best friend Devon’s house. It’s only when Amber goes exploring in the woods near her home, singing camp songs with the hikers she meets on the Appalachian Trail, that she feels free—and when the bigger world feels just a little bit more in reach.

When Amber learns about an audition at the North Carolina School of the Arts, she decides that her dream—to sing on bigger stages—could also be her ticket to a new life. Devon’s older (and unavailable) brother, Will, helps Amber prepare for her one chance to try out for the hypercompetitive arts school. But the more time Will and Amber spend together, the more complicated their relationship becomes . . . and Amber starts to wonder if she’s such a good girl, after all.

Then, in an afternoon, the bottom drops out of her family’s world—and Amber is faced with an impossible choice between her promise as an artist and the people she loves. Amber always thought she knew what a good girl would do. But between “right” and “wrong,” there’s a whole world of possibilities.

My Thoughts:
Love. Love, love, love, love, love!

I'm a huge fan of character-driven novels and this one certainly didn't disappoint! The voice jumped out at me from page one and never let go. The writing was excellent and clean. The southern charm, twang, and location felt authentic and real, as did the story. And don't even get me started on Will! *sigh*

All in all, just a great story. My heart ached for the main character, Amber, throughout and I was constantly on the edge of my seat, worried for her, while at the same time flying through the pages, dying to know how it would all turn out. And not just for Amber. There were so many great characters to love (Devon! Mama! Sean! C.A!) that I was invested in each of them and their intertwined storylines.

It's interesting how few YA novels I've read that are set in small towns in the south. It was refreshing.

I can't wait to read more by this fabulous author, who gets major bonus points for mentioning both Boone AND Appalachian State, my alma mater. Well done.

My only complaint? Now I miss the characters.

Book Rec: NIL by Lynne Matson

Nil (Nil, #1)
Goodreads Description:
On the mysterious island of Nil, the rules are set. You have one year. Exactly 365 days--to escape, or you die.

Seventeen-year-old Charley doesn’t know the rules. She doesn’t even know where she is. The last thing she remembers is blacking out, and when she wakes up, she’s lying naked in an empty rock field.

Lost and alone, Charley finds no sign of other people until she meets Thad, the gorgeous leader of a clan of teenage refugees. Soon Charley learns that leaving the island is harder than she thought . . . and so is falling in love. With Thad’s time running out, Charley realizes that to save their future, Charley must first save him. And on an island rife with dangers, their greatest threat is time.

My thoughts:
You guys! This book!

The snowboarding references made me miss the snow, and the descriptions of the island made me miss the beach, but it was the suspense of it all that really, really kept me going. The further into the book I read, the faster I turned the pages, wondering *if* and *when* Thad and Charley would get off of NIL. There were some late nights when I should have been asleep instead of STILL reading, and I love that feeling. It's the BEST.

Overall, I thought this book was unique, imagin You guys! This book!

Interview and Giveaway: Erin Fletcher (On Writing)

Happy Friday everyone!

Today I have my friend (and YA author) Erin Fletcher on the blog! We're talking about her debut book, WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME, as well as her writing process, favorite books, and any other writerly advice she has to keep us all inspired and motivated.

And because free books are basically THE BEST, there's a giveaway link below so you can enter to win a copy of Erin's latest book. The winner will get to choose their favorite format: either a digital copy from Amazon or a personalized, autographed copy from Erin. Your choice!

Before we get started, a little bit more about Erin, her book, and where you can find HER online.

When Hanley Helton discovers a boy living in her garage, she knows she should kick him out. But Nate is too charming to be dangerous. He just needs a place to get away, which Hanley understands. Her own escape methods—vodka, black hair dye, and pretending the past didn't happen—are more traditional, but who is she to judge?

Nate doesn't tell her why he's in her garage, and she doesn't tell him what she's running from. Soon, Hanley¹s trading her late-night escapades for all-night conversations and stolen kisses. But when Nate¹s recognized as the missing teen from the news, Hanley isn'tsure which is worse: that she's harboring a fugitive, or that she's in love with one.
About Erin: YA writer. Lover of coffee and flip flops. Represented by John M. Cusick of Greenhouse Literary. You can find her on Twitter and her Blog.

Welcome, Erin!

Your debut novel, WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME, was a NaNo book, right?
(For those that aren't familiar, NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month, which happens every November. It challenges writers to write an entire novel in one month.)

Yes, it was. I’ve participated in NaNo three times, and absolutely loved it. The combination of having a manageable goal (1,667 words per day) along with a community of supportive writers works well for me. NaNo requires you to turn off your inner editor for a month, which can be a good thing!

Can you tell me a little bit about how the idea for WYFM came about? Strangely enough, I got the idea for WYFM from my parents’ house. I stepped into their pitch-black garage and sneezed. Then my thoughts went something like this: It would be creepy if the garage wasn’t as empty as I thought it was, and someone said “Bless you.” It would be even creepier if the person who said “bless you” was living in the garage without anyone realizing it. Oh! What if a teenage girl was the sneezer and discovered the teenage Garage Boy while sneaking out somewhere? And what if, instead of kicking him out, she fell in love with him? The book kind of wrote itself from there! I know you're working on other projects right now...are you typically a plotter or a pantser? Maybe a mixture of both?

I am definitely both a plotter and a pantser. For WYFM, I was a pantser. I didn’t know why Nate was living in Hanley’s garage until Hanley herself found out! For the most recent manuscript I completed, I was a plotter. A friend recommended Save the Cat, and even though it’s originally for screenplay writers, the format worked well for plotting out my novel! Do you use a writing software? If so, what kind, and what are your favorite things about it? (I'm seriously thinking about investing in something soon!)

Scrivener is my favorite thing ever! It’s great for keeping writing organized. It’s incredibly easy to move sections or even whole chapters around. It’s like an outline and a word processer all in one. Plus, it has progress bars showing overall progress and daily progress. I’m easily motivated by graphs. The only downside is that it takes a little while to get used to. I’m still probably not using all of the available features, but that doesn’t stop me from loving it! Can you tell us a little bit about your writing process? I know everyone seems to have their own method...what does it look like for you?

I usually start my writing process by creating an outline with the “notecards” in Scrivener. Then I write my first draft while periodically sending chapters to at least one critique partner to make sure I’m on the right track. Once the first draft is done, I revise as needed (anywhere from a few tweaks to a complete overhaul) and send the whole thing to beta readers. I revise again based on comments from beta readers, then send it off to my agent! Best writing moment you've had thus far?

The best moment so far was when I found out WYFM was going to be published. Since I’ve wanted to be a published author for so long, it was a dream come true! Any advice to share with new writers?

My advice for new writers is to surround yourself with experienced writers and learn as much as you can from them. Find critique partners who aren’t afraid to be honest and give constructive criticism. Read within your genre and notice what different authors do really well. Take writing classes and read books about the craft. If you do that, you’ll make it! Favorite books you've read? And...go! Every Day by David LevithanThe Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen ChboskyBefore I Fall by Lauren OliverExposed by Kimberly MarcusPaper Towns by John GreenAnna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Ooohhh, I've read *most* of those, but there's one I'll definitely be adding to my own reading list!

Thanks again for stopping by, Erin. It's fun and inspiring to hear how other writer brains work!

If you'd like to win a copy of WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME, you can enter via the Rafflecopter giveaway below! All you need is an email address and a bit of luck!

I'm baaaaaack!

Happy 2015 everyone!

And yeah. That whole Tumblr thing? It SO didn't work out for me. And not for lack of trying. (Frustrating, trying to make things look the way I want, trying. Lots of it.) Turns out, I'm a blogger/wordpress girl at heart. Who knew?

On top of having a hard time figuring out how to make Tumblr work the way I wanted, there was that whole not-having-anything-to-say issue for quite a while. It wasn't so much writer block as it was blogging block. And I think there were definitely reasons for that. Lots of reasons. Big fat reasons. Which I'll probably get into eventually, but for now, I really just want to say...

Hi. How are you? You've been missed. Loads.

Okay, well, that isn't exactly *ALL* I have to say. (Is it ever?) Because what's a blogger return without an interview and giveaway? NOTHING. It's absolutely nothing. Or at the very least, it's nothing Kristi-like.

Which is why my friend Erin Fletcher has agreed to be my first interview victim guest on the blog next week. We'll be talking all things writing - process, software, favorite books...be sure to stop by and check it out next Friday! I'll also be giving away a copy of her book, WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME. And trust me, you want this book. Gaze upon the beautiful cover of perfection:

Until then... you all really have been missed. It's good to be back. And I'm looking forward to 2015 and all it has to bring!

Moving to Tumblr and other important things...

I know, I know!

It's been FOREVER. And I've missed you blogger friends.

What can I say? Things in 2014 have been busy, like trying-to-keep-my-head-above-water-but-all-good-things-busy.

I recently decided to move to Tumblr, so while I may keep this site open for a while, if you want to know what I'm up to, you can likely find me at one of the two below places as they take less time to keep up with and I can access them easily from my phone:

New Tumblr Site
Twitter

I'd love to keep up with you there, so please do find me and connect!

In other importantly news, many of my blogger/writer friends have books out now! HOW COOL IS THAT?!? And you should buy them because I swear to you they are awesome, friendly people, and we should all support each other, yes?

Yes! (And did I mention the books are also quite FABULOUS? Because they really, really are, all biases aside. I'm so blessed to have such talented friends!)

First up is Erin Fletcher's WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME. (I call dibs on book boyfriend Nate. Fair warning.)

Description:
When Hanley Helton discovers a boy living in her garage, she knows she should kick him out. But Nate is too charming to be dangerous. He just needs a place to get away, which Hanley understands. Her own escape methods (vodka, black hair dye, and pretending the past didn't happen) are more traditional, but who is she to judge?

Nate doesn't tell her why he's in her garage, and she doesn't tell him what she's running from. Soon, Hanley's trading her late-night escapades for all-night conversations and stolen kisses. But when Nate's recognized as the missing teen from the news, Hanley isn't sure which is worse: that she's harboring a fugitive, or that she's in love with one.

You can buy it in the following places:
Amazon
Barnes & Noble

Next up is Charity Tinnin's HAUNTED. (And not to seem book boyfriend greedy and all, but Daniel? Yeah, he's mine too. I've heard rumors that he'll have his own POV in Book#2, HUNTED and I can. not. wait.)

Description:  Punish the guilty or save the innocent? He can’t do both.

As a liquidator, it’s Noah State’s job to carry out justice for the Elite—which is why they send him to Metro Area Four. There’s evidence of a resistance movement and chatter about a dangerous uprising. Noah’s orders? Stop it at any cost.

Failure means death. But Noah’s haunted by the blood spilled in his past and certain God has condemned him for it. Shedding more isn’t an option.

Then he meets Maddison James, a hospital apprentice with revolutionary leanings, and glimpses a future he thought was lost. A future within reach if they can survive his brother’s interference, a resistance more threatening than anyone imagined, and one unforgivable choice.

You can buy it in the following places:
Amazon
Barnes & Noble

Hope this note finds you all doing well and preparing for some warmer weather. (FINALLY!)

Migraine Madness

Those of you who suffer from the occasional migraine (heaven forbid, FREQUENT migraines) know what I'm talking about.

There's nothing worse than the feeling of one coming on, of knowing the signs before it's about to strike (distorted vision for me), and realizing the clock has already begun to tick down to that final, inevitable, heinous moment when your brain hurts so much you're sure it's about to force it's way out of your skull. Don't worry. I'm not exaggerating. That's pretty much how it feels. Am I right?

Over the years they've hit me at business lunches, at my desk at work, and at home curled up in bed first thing in the morning. I've gotten sick in public bathrooms, have abandoned my car to have co-workers drive me home, and on one really horrific occasion, even had to pull over on the side of the road to be sick. Yeah, trust me, not fun.

Migraines are no par-tay. And no matter when they hit, or why they hit, the end result is always the same: me with my head tucked under a pillow, in a dark room, the shades drawn, praying it will stop hurting enough that I can fall asleep for a few hours. And after those few hours and a bit of wretching? Back to normal.

Is it any wonder that the mere thought of  red wine (one of my DEFINITE triggers) makes my stomach curl up into a ball? It's mad, I tell you, MAD. And also? Sad. I miss my wine. I do. Just not enough to take a sip. Other items added to my avoid-at-all-costs-list? Bananas, eggs, and pineapple. All things I enjoy, mind you, just not enough to tempt the fates. (You can find frequent migraine trigger food lists online if you're curious.)

I've also started taking Magnesium supplements daily after reading an article about the benefits. Jury's still out on if they're actually helping or not. I don't get them frequently enough to know for sure, but it HAS been a few months since my last occurrence, so maybe?

What about you? Do you suffer from migraines? Any tips/tricks you've learned over the years? Anything you avoid?

Random Tidbit: Every time I think about Migraines, this song pops into my head: (Love the song by the way--the video? Ehhh...)

Hope this post finds you well and 100% migraine free. :-)

Peace, love and books,
