Maintaining Faith

Today I'd like to introduce Lisa Sachez, a great girl whom I've met through my adventures in publishing. She was one of the very first people to read & review Three Daves and I've been lucky to include her in my pool of supportive author friends ever since. She's been quite busy these last couple of years and has just released her 5th novel, Faythe Reclaimed. I find the premise of this book quite intriguing and so I invited her by to discuss it a bit more. Take it away, Lisa...

Oh, wait, one more thing - today's the last day to match the man w/ the manuscript in Bookish Temptations Men of Omnific giveawayNow take it away, Lisa...

First off, I’d like to say how thankful I am to be here chatting with all of you today. Woot!
When Nicki asked me to talk about the title for Hanaford Park #3 and it’s double meaning, I’ll admit, I was a little giddy. Faythe Reclaimed is a definite play on words, and speaks not only to the plot, but also to the journey one of the main characters embarks on.

Persecuted and brutally beaten by self-righteous haters, as well as those he held close to his heart, Gabriel Castillo has lost faith in both humanity, and himself. Having moved from Spain to the New World in search of a quiet, peaceful life, his world is rocked upside down when the residents of his new hometown––Salem Village––treat him with the same hatred and oppression as those before. This torment, coupled with the loss of the only woman he’s ever truly loved––Faythe Ellwood––takes the reader on his journey toward redemption.

I have to say: I embarked on my own journey of faith while writing this story. I had a vision for Taylor and Gabriel’s tale early on in the series, and knew my desire to throw time travel into the mix would provide a challenge. And what a challenge it turned out to be. Faythe Reclaimed took the longest out of the three Hanaford Park books to write. Not because I didn’t know where the story was going, or I was blocked, but simply because I wanted to get it “right.” A lot of research went into the story. I can’t tell you how many hours I spent staring at a map of 1692 Salem Village. Some days I wondered if I’d bitten off too much with juggling three points of view, two of which are the same character––one from the past, one from the present. Despite my frustrations, I stayed strong and had faith the story would come together as I’d envisioned, and after a lot of hard work, I think it did. I hope you all enjoy 

Blurb:

Running through a strange forest with a bloodthirsty demon hot on her heels wasn’t Taylor’s idea of a rockin’ evening. Then again, neither was soaring backward through time and space. Time travel chafed and left a rank, nasty aftertaste. So, when she finds herself floundering amidst a sea of Commandment-loving holy rollers who fling accusations of witchcraft and bedevilment like hotcakes in a diner, finding her way home jumps to the top of her to do list. Too bad she can’t remember who she is or where she came from. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Taylor realizes she’s fallen for Gabriel, the mysterious Latin warlock who came to her rescue.

Battling an identity crisis and lost in a time that’s not her own, Taylor is determined to find her way back to twenty-first century Hanaford Park. But first, she and Gabriel must work together to uncover the dark scourge lurking in the shadows of Salem Village, and in doing so, save their lives, and the lives of countless innocents from a lethal date with the hangman’s noose.

A to Z Reflections

This is part of a group-posts bt A to Z 2012 Survivors in which we reflect on all things A to Z. If you'd like to join, write your post and then link its URL here.

Since it's all about the letters, I'm going to give myself letter grades on my participation.
For A to Z 2012 Posts: A+
I posted every day, most days at :01 CST, and posts were kept short & wildly entertaining (oops, change that "w" to an "m"). Pre-writing and scheduling was KEY, and using a theme helped me keep individual posts brief because I looked at A to Z as one giant post broken into 26 bite-sized pieces.

Also, the Disney World theme was totally fun to immerse in. I loved hearing about other bloggers' past & upcoming trips to Disney World (I hope at least some of my tips will prove useful). And I was tickled pink when DL Hammons told me his "Disney Diva" wife, who happens to be an expert travel agent, had requested the link to my posts!

For A to Z 2012 Blog Hopping: C-
I visited everyone who visited me...although I have a sneaking feeling I may have missed one or two...but not as often as I would have liked, and I only initiated contact with precious few. April turned out to be shockingly busy in other aspects of my life, so while reading A to Z posts proved to be a fun getaway during a free hour here and there, I wasn't able to give it the focus I'd hoped to.

Will I do it again next year? I want to, but only if I can guarantee my April 2013 schedule will allow me to be a better visitor. The joy of reading comments on my posts every morning was dampened by the guilt of not being able to return the favor on a daily basis. I already have a theme in mind, and one I dearly want to explore, so I think what I'll do is go ahead and pre-write, schedule & post them, but I won't add my name to the A to Z list until the verge of April---and only if it looks like I'll be able to devote more time to reading others' posts.

Do I appreciate the efforts of the A to Z co-hosts to enhance our blog experience, and am I even more in awe of their discipline and dedication? Yes and YES!!! Thank you all! And thank you to the bloggers who I did get to visit for your clever A to Z posts. And of course, thank you to everyone who visited & made my month with your comments. :)

Note to Disney Trivia enthusiasts: The answers are coming!! Here's my plan---split the answers into a series of three posts to go up on each of the next three Mondays. I did mean to start today, but it was a big, busy weekend and then there was this reflections post and...blah, blah, blah, right? Thank you for your patience.

Insecure Writers Support Group

One of the keys to happiness in this life---and I think it applies to us writers most of all---is the ability to laugh at ourselves. In this industry fraught with so very many varieties of rejection, taking yourself too seriously is the surest way to misery.

But no worries, I'm here to help.
If you're not sure how you're doing, watch the video below:

N

Now, which of the following most closely describes your reaction:
A) You started laughing as soon as you caught baby Stewie's drift, you're still laughing, and you can't wait to pull the same schtick on all your writer friends.

If your reaction was A, scroll over the bar below for your assessmentCongratulations! You're going to be okay, kid. ;)
B) You were laughing by the end, but it took a minute, and right now you sorta feel like punching something.

If your reaction was B, scroll over the bars below for your assessmentDon't worry. This is probably a normal reaction. But unless one of your favorite pastimes is repairing drywall, I suggest you re-watch the video as many times as it takes until you no longer wish to harm baby Stewie.
C) You were greatly offended and are now planning to use your writing skills to craft a strongly worded letter to the creator of Family Guy.

If your reaction was C, scroll over the bars below for your assessment.Dude, you really ought to rethink this writing thing. Ever consider a career in accounting? No sense of humor required there.

How'd you do?

A to Z Obscure Disney World Tips: Z

If we could rewind a bit to A and T for a sec...Thank you Tara Tyler and Alex J. Cavanaugh for featuring me in your N and Y posts, respectively! Such nice surprises from two surprisingly nice people. Looking forward to catching their Zs. :)

Umm, I should probably go back to B as well. As Suze's incessant giggling reminds me, I owe Blogger an apology:
Dear Blogger,
Ever so sorry for flipping out and swearing at you in text lingo. It appears the fault for that scheduling glitch lies entirely with me. Although...well, I still think you could've somehow made it more clear that saving the scheduling information in the sidebar doesn't complete the process - the save button says "Done," after all. Just saying.
And now on with the show...
Z is for: Zebras!

It's fitting that we're ending on one of my most favorite Disney World discoveries---the Sanaa restaurant in the Kidani Village, part of Disney's Animal Kingdom resort.

Sanaa not only has delicious African food, it's got floor to ceiling windows with views like this:

I had high expectations after reading about Sanaa online, and I have to say, our lunch here lived up to every one of them. You really do get to see tons of zebras plus giraffes, gazelles, wildebeests, and ostriches. If you're lucky, a crazy bird will walk right up to the window by your table and challenge its reflection.

The Kidani Village is an easy bus ride from Disney's Animal Kingdom park, and what's really cool is that sitting down to a meal at Sanaa allows for time to simply watch and see what's going to happen next. Like zebras rolling on their backs like puppy dogs, or a giraffe kicking at one of the stripey fellas when he gets impatient waiting for his turn at the hay sack.

We lucked out with a window-side table, but the restaurant is small and all the tables seem situated with the view in mind. Actually, Sanaa itself is quite the visual pleasure.

Disney World TriviaBetween 1948 -1960 Walt Disney Productions produced a series of short subject documentaries with a focus on nature and wildlife. What was the name of that series?

A to Z Obscure Disney World Tips: Y

Y is for: Your very own roller coaster

A newish (2009) and underplayed gem at Epcot is the Sum of All Thrills in Innoventions East.

At this attraction you get to design your very own roller coaster from beginning to end, and then you get to virtually ride it! It's SO much fun, and for something I'd barely even heard about, way cooler than I expected.
The enclosed capsules for virtual riding can be a bit intimidating to some (like my son), but even the claustrophobic can participate---my daughter and I didn't peek while he designed, and then we girls rode his creation at our own risk.

When the attendant looked at our design card and asked, "You're going upside down three times?" I could only reply, "Apparently so."

Which of Disney World's four major roller coasters is the shortest in duration?

A to Z Obscure Disney World Tips: X

X is for: Xanax for Your Feet
For months before every trip to Walt Disney World, I embark on a quest for the perfect shoe. Because if my feet aren't happy, I'm not happy. So I've spent a lot of money on adorable yet comfortable shoes. But every trip to Disney World, I end up falling back on my old stand-by: Crocks. And not the cute little numbers they've evolved into---I'm talking first issue, drab blue, complete-absence-of-anything-resembling-style Crocks.
I know they're ugly, and I know they're only made of rubber, but it's a miracle rubber, because when pushing the Disney World pavement to its limit, these are the only puppies that don't have me crying by mid-afternoon.

To be fair, I know the darling Naot sandals I purchased for the last trip would've stood up to the challenge, however, it was a rainy week and I didn't want to risk ruining my new leather shoes, so it was Crocks to the rescue again. An extra bonus of the rubber is that it completely dries out when you duck inside---so much better than having to squish around in soggy socks or saturated leather all day.
You can buy Disney crocks with Mickey-eared holes at the Disney World parks and resorts, but if you want a pair, don't wait for the rains to come---they sell out quickly.

Disney World Trivia
Without searching for an image, tell me off the top of your head - what color are Donald Duck's shoes?

A to Z Obscure Disney World Tips: W

Which Disney Character are You?

Practically hidden---in The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney's Hollywood Studios---is the "Which Disney Character are You?" quiz. You might be able to find similar quizzes online, but those don't count. You must take the test on Disney property for it to be official (in the rules according to moi).
It's totally worth the sideline. We ventured into the walk-through attraction on a hot, crowded day at Hollywood Studios, but found the large, air-conditioned space to be fairly uninhabited. We were free to peruse the exhibits and play with the interactive computers without waiting and had a lot of fun. Winnie the Pooh and Sorcerer Mickey even made an appearance for photo ops with hardly any line at all.
The one part of the exhibit I personally didn't care for was the show. It's over-the-top cheesy and you feel pressure to laugh because of the live guy on stage in close proximity. You're supposed to enter the building via the theater, watch the show, and then be released to see the cool stuff, but if you want to skip the show, you can easily enter at the exit, which we did by accident.

Disney World Trivia
As I reported in my Disney World postmortem, I took the "Which Disney Character Are you Quiz" last fall---who did I get?

A to Z Obscure Disney World Tips: V

V is for: Veneration
If you love anything Disney, then it's only right to pay homage to the man who followed his dreams and thus feeds ours. And you'll be glad you did. Because One Man's Dream , a tribute to Walter Disney at Disney's Hollywood Studios, is not only an interesting walk-through-at-your-own-pace exhibit of memorabilia from the Disney archives, it's a pleasant escape from the hot, crowded asphalt of the park.

My favorite things: the models of the Disney parks throughout the world and the short movie (about 15 minutes) in the comfy theater. The movie contains never before seen footage of Walt himself and provides a nice little history of how the magical place you're in the midst of came to be.
The two in the middle you'll recognize. The other two...let's just say they grow on ya after a while...like a fungus. ;)

In what city was Walter Disney born?
