three asthmatic oxen yoked together

We have twenty-two baby trees in our yard with supporting poles. The poles are three inches in diameter and sunk 3-4 feet into the ground. After two full years of growing, it was time to remove the poles. The trick was to loosen them before gripping low and heaving upward. In my exuberance to be a good 'pioneer wife' I forgot the adage: "lift with your legs, not your back." I don't think I helped with more than seven or eight poles (out of forty-four) but the damage was done. I had strained m...

Six month Honeymoon in Texas

When my husband and I decided to cash in the return tickets during our honeymoon and stay in Texas, our parents panicked. But they were miles away in Idaho and there was nothing they could do. Back home we were broke and without employment, and the economy was desperate. In Texas the economy was good, we obtained jobs and found an adorable apartment. However as newlyweds on our own we were faced with the reality that mom and dad were no longer available beyond messages during an occassional p...

crumbling walls and untying ropes

Within the temple built by King Solomon, the division between the Holy Chamber and the Holy of Holies or the holy inner chamber, emphasized the idea of the separation between sinful man and the Lord as an almost insurmountable barrier. Only a penitent, righteous high priest would ever enter through the thick, layered veil into the Holy of Holies, and then only on one day of the year.

This came about after Aaron's two sons approached the sacred chamber, to offer a sacred sacrifice inappropriat...

The rent veil

In the temple that King Solomon built there were two rooms, the Holy Chamber where the shew bread tables, the golden candlestick, and the altar of incense were, and the room known as the Holy of Holies, which was the home of the Ark of the Covenant; the place where the Lord was. The Holy of Holies was separated from the first chamber by two large olive wood doors that were intricately carved and plated in gold. Beyond the doors was the veil of the temple, and beyond that the cubical room enca...

Sunshine in Darkness

Today I read this little story. It is one of finding hope where there is none. Finding beauty amid the stones of prison. Finding companionship and unity in a world torn apart. Finding love when surrounded by hate.

During the Holocaust, some Jewish women who were interned in Terezin compiled a cookbook from memory. The Terezin prisoners recalled and wrote down their recipes for chocolate torte, breast of goose, plum strudel, and other traditional dishes while surviving on potato scraps. Their ...

In the wake of Sunday's blasphemy

Sunday congress 'created' a right. Previously Americans acknowledged rights came only from God. (See the Declaration of Independence.) So what day did they choose to disavow God further? His day.

From my Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary:

Liberty:
1. freedom from restraint…applicable to the body, or to the will or mind. The body is at liberty, when not confined; the will or mind is at liberty, when not checked or controlled.
2. Natural liberty, consists in the power of acting as one thinks fit, withou...

A valuable virtue

Ben Zoma, a second-century rabbinic sage who died young, wrote about some of the paradoxes of life:

Who are the wise? Those who learn from everyone.
Who are the strong? Those who conquer their own impulses.
Who are rich? Those who find contentment in their lot.
Who are esteemed? Those who esteem others.
(Pirkei Avot 4:1).

In the politics of today it seems that the qualities of true leaders are forgotten. Arrogance, pride, and a rejection of God's word has led to a confusion of values. Wisdom is...
