New Book Review: "Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day" by Ben Loory

My Ben Loory review is up at The Collagist:

It is never suggested that the forces—monster, UFO, invisible crown, and death himself—do not exist, but their reality doesn't make the people who encounter them any more sane.

It's a secret pleasure to get to read a good book before everyone else can. Thanks to editor Gabriel Blackwell for working with me on the piece. Here's another review of it by Kevin McFarland at AV Club. If you're interested in Loory's book, you can buy it at–among other places–Starbucks.

"And Understand This" in Route 9

Sarah Malone has published a new short piece of mine in Route 9. (And it's already been reblogged by the hilarious Julie Klausner. Awesome!)

"My Turn to Wait" in the final print issue of QUARTERLY WEST

(I'd credit this cover artist if the magazine was in front of me.)

The new Quarterly West is out, a double-issue with new writing by Rae Armantrout, Alyssa Nutting, Greg Gerke, and a story I wrote called "My Turn to Wait." It's about wanting babies and not wanting babies and obtaining babies illegally and wanting monkeys and hoping babies will be monkeys. It felt like a big step for me when I wrote it 3 years ago, like I'd figured out how to be manic and controlled simultaneously. For the longest time it bore the widely unpopular title "Shaved Apes as Babies."

Quarterly West isn't putting out more print issues. Boo! They're moving online starting September 21. Yay!

When the pressure valve pops and the milk foams, the courageous cow gives off a mighty moo, an exclamatory release of steam — 'ah, coffee!'

The new issue of SmokeLong Quarterly just came out, featuring  Weikie Wang's "A Morning Routine," the story I chose as a guest editor a couple of months ago. I interviewed Wang about her story, her survival strategies, and her advice to inept young baristas.

"You, Tony the Wonder Horse" in DIAGRAM 11.3

Back from vacationland!

That's both true and an Ander Monson reference.

DIAGRAM 11.3 just came out.

In it is a new short by Known and Published Author Gabe Durham. (Southwest's in-flight magazine referred to a guy that way–thought I'd try it out.) The short is called You, Tony the Wonder Horse. It is from FUN CAMP.

Also in the issue:

Alice Bolin
Cody-Rose Clevidence
Jim Daniels
Gabe Durham
Kelly Forsythe
J. A. Gaye
Brandi George
Joseph Mains
Alex Moody
Trey Moody
Gregg Murray
Helen Phillips *
Meg Reilly
Benjamin Rybeck
Zachary Sifuentes
Lytton Smith
Curtis VanDonkelaar
Sarah Viren
Joseph P. Wood
Ark Codex

The Helen Phillips story won a contest judged by Lydia Millet. Maybe start there.
