BBC News - Fear of the Bot

Why are humans afraid of robots?
I occasionally get asked this question, and every time I answer it seems that a new wrinkle pops up. BBC News recently did a piece on the topic, interviewing quite a few really interesting people. (Anybody who builds thinking robot arms that pick people up and shake them around for fun is interesting in my book.) I also contributed my two cents.

Some more information from the contest:
Readers have three chances to vote:* I can't guarantee this.
Opening Round: October 31 – November 13
Voting open to official nominees (that's you) and write-in votes.
Semifinals: November 14 – November 20
We add the top 5 write-ins as official nominees. Additional write-ins no longer accepted.
Finals: November 21 – November 30
The field narrows to the top 10 books in each category.
ABOUT THE NOMINATIONS
We analyzed statistics from the 87 million books added, rated, and reviewed on the site in 2011 to list 15 books in 22 categories--that's 330 nominations. We did not consult a panel of experts or form a secret committee of publishing insiders. Readers know what's good and what's great. These nominations are based on a book's number of ratings and average rating as pegged by the more than 6 million members on Goodreads. So a nomination is truly an honor because it comes from your readers!

Incredible News
Robopocalypse is a go with DreamWorks and Spielberg! I am feeling very happy and thankful today. Plus, you know you have to count your blessings when you get an email like this from your agent:
Variety
io9.comReuters
"The Linda Chester Literary Agency congratulates client Daniel H. Wilson on his remarkable story of human ingenuity. His New York Times bestselling novel, ROBOPOCALYPSE, is a go at Dreamworks and Fox, with Steven Spielberg directing, and we couldn't be more thrilled."Deadline New York<="" href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/fox-dreamworks-finance-steven-spielbergs-231985" span="">Hollywood Reporter

Robopocalypse movie has release date!

DreamWorks announced yesterday that the funding situation and release date were all set for Robopocalypse. So, it looks like the movie is really, really coming together. Words can't express how exciting this is for me. And don't even ask me how I'm going to feel on:

Cranking
Whoa, it's been three months since ROBOPOCALYPSE was released! And about a month since the book tour ended. And a while since I posted to the blog... :P
Thought I'd chime in and let the world know that I'm hard at work on my next novel, called AMPED (yes, the book has had a slight renaming). AMPED is slated to come out summer 2012, so I've got to put the finishing touches on it over the next few weeks. ROBO is still selling great and lately more people have started to check out HOW TO SURVIVE A ROBOT UPRISING, which is wonderful! More survivors, you know?
Okay, back to the grindstone...

Behind the Robopocalypse

Some nice press for Robopocalypse came in today.
GLOBE AND MAIL
First off, the Canadian Globe and Mail has a piece on "The art of making scary robots." They've got a solid interview with some of the background pieces that went into Robo in order to make it as frightening as possible.

LA TIMES
Meanwhile, Chris Barton at the LA Times has a (slightly snarky) review of Robopocalypse. He calls me the "heir-apparent" to Michael Crichton, which is nice. But he also says other sci-fi authors must be stabbing voodoo dolls of me with needles, which is not as nice to think about.
"A fast-paced and decidedly cinematic novel with chills mixed in with the thrills. Wilson's war includes darkly comic touches, such as the fastidious robots compulsively clearing away the human remains after every attack, and a murderous elevator communicating with its familiar "ding" as it cheerily lures elderly retirees to their deaths. These details add a richly haunting atmosphere to the robots' tactics. Robopocalypse is a crisply efficient and intermittently chilling summer read"I have to mention, 1) the robots clear away human remains because the machines are built to operate on flat surfaces; they keep the streets clean so they can move, not because it's somehow funny; and 2) the elevator "ding" is kind of funny, but mostly that detail is because I find that inserting ordinary moments into horrific situations increases the terror because the familiar suddenly becomes grotesque. :)

BLOGGINGHEADS
And finally, I did an in-depth recorded interview with bloggingheads TV that has aired. It goes into why I think self-driving cars are inevitable, what it feels like to sell something to Mr. Spielberg, and why Asimov's three laws don't have anything to do with robotics!

Oh, Powell's Books
I'm on my way out the door to go sign a few books up the street at my neighborhood independent bookstore -- Powell's Books. Just thinking to myself how nice it is to have the City of Books right down the road, and to have Robopocalypse as a staff pick on shelves that are only a couple blocks away from where I wrote the dang thing!
Remember: If you want a signed first edition of Robopocalypse -- Powell's is your best bet!
