Where Should I Go on Book Tour?

The Next Book Cover

Later this fall I’ll be visiting at least 40 cities to meet readers and talk about my new book, The Happiness of Pursuit.

I’m super excited about this tour. We’re hitting a bunch of major markets where a lot of you live, and I hope to see thousands of people out on the road.

–>Sign up for the first batch of cities (it’s free!)

I’ve also learned from more than 100 previous book tour stops that sometimes the best stops are the unexpected ones.

More than once, a co-host or especially motivated gr...

“Dreams Are the Kind of Things You Can Borrow and Lend Out”

13988761282_161af65c8f_z

I always love Murakami’s work. The title of this post comes from a new short story published in the New Yorker. Here’s more:

When I moved from Kansai to Tokyo to start college, I spent the whole bullet-train ride mentally reviewing my eighteen years and realized that almost everything that had happened to me was pretty embarrassing. I’m not exaggerating. I didn’t want to remember any of it—it was so pathetic. The more I thought about my life up to then, the more I hated myself. It wasn’t that...

How to Retire on $25,000 a Year: A Conversation with Mr. Money Mustache

Eight years ago, the man known as Mr. Money Mustache and his wife retired from traditional work—at age 30. They did this after saving money for five years and relentlessly paying off their mortgage.

J.D. Roth spoke with Mr. Mustache about how they managed this non-traditional financial feat. Here’s a snippet from their conversation:

“We saved mostly by not simply not following the materialistic trends of this country, which is kind of unique in this world where most are caught up in this trend...

World Record: Achievement Unlocked!

Last week, more than 800 people gathered in downtown Portland in hopes of breaking a longstanding world record for the longest yoga chain.

Here’s how it went down…

Special thanks to Tyler Tervooren, our Adventure Czar (featured in this video), who produced this event for WDS and the greater Portland community.

Thanks as well to everyone who came out to participate or support the participants in this effort!

World record participants, we’ll be waiting on official confirmation from Guinness for a...

14638045141_542bc41701_z

We had a fantastic time at the fourth-annual World Domination Summit (WDS)! I’m incredibly sleep-deprived at the moment, but over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing stories, attendee blog posts, and eventually video of the event.

For now, you can see more than 1,200 photos at the official media page.

Side note: It appears that a few people are checking out this page!

Finding Yourself in Thailand: On the Road with Alana Morgan

This is a traveler case study. ( Read others or nominate yourself .)

I stumbled across Paper Planes and was intrigued by Alana Morgan’s story of leaving the U.S. to live abroad. I asked her to tell us a bit about how she got herself to Thailand.

Introduce yourself!

Back home in Seattle, I wanted different kinds of stories, problems, discoveries and connections than my 9-5 was giving me. So I quit my job and moved abroad. Three years later, I’m living in Thailand and currently planning my next move...

Two Weeks in Oman

Watching this video makes me want to return to Oman.

Located on the tip of the Arabian peninsula, the country is an unexpected gem. Some of the neighbors are good for short transits and nice hotels, but not much else. At least for now, Oman remains a land of authentic adventure.

Giveaway: “Forks” Book by Allan Karl

Every Friday is giveaway day. Comment to win!

Forks-AllanKarl

One day Allan Karl woke up to discover that he was unemployed and his marriage had ended in divorce. Allan looked at these forks in the road of his life as an opportunity to both follow a life-long dream and pursue his passions.

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Allan published an incredibly detailed book about his three-year journey.

This isn’t just any travelogue—it’s hugely comprehensive! When he sent me a preview copy, it went to the top...

Buying Stocks for Frequent Flyer Miles

Stocks for Miles

Warning: This is an advanced travel hacking strategy that is definitely not for everyone. Most travel hacking is risk-free and available to anyone. This strategy can work (and has worked well for me so far) but it does contain risk. Be sure to do your own research before pursuing it.

Two months ago, I earned 60,000 extra Frequent Flyer miles and points from purchasing blue-chip stocks.

This travel hacking strategy existed because of Loyal3.com, a service that allowed users to purchase up to...
