Key Things To Do In Key West!

10 KEY THINGS TO DO IN KEY WEST!

Getting to Key West is a big adventure in itself because Key West is a tropical island city at the end of a chain of coral islands known as the Florida Keys and located at the very southernmost point of the continental United States.

This makes Key West closer to Cuba than it is to Miami!

The Keys are connected to Florida by an Overseas Highway also known as Highway One. Overseas Highway spans 113 miles or 182 km and consists of a series of bridges and causeways – including the iconic Seven Mile Bridge – from the mainland all the way to Key West.

For me, travelling on Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys and visiting Key West, was an adventure that turned out to be not only exciting and fun but fascinating and memorable.

Read more about how I travelled to Key West on a Greyhound Bus from Miami!

So, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller to the wonderful ‘Conche Republic’ as it’s known affectionately by its local ‘conches’ you’ll always find lots to do and something new to discover there.

Let me be your travel guide exploring my Top 10 Key Things to do once you reach Key West!

Duval Street is the beating heart of Key West. This lively 1.2 miles or 2 km long street stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico and is home to an array of interesting shops, quirky art galleries, lively bars, and fabulous restaurants.

All of these experiences make Duval Street – named after William Pope Duval, the first territorial governor of Florida – the perfect place to soak up the local atmosphere. I recommend you visit in the daytime for sightseeing and then again during the evening when the street comes alive with live music and bustling crowds.

AFFILIATE NOTICE 2025 WHERE TO STAY IN KEY WEST

We’d arrived in Key West at the end of the month of May / start of June and we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. So we decided to book in a very nice room at the historic boutique Lighthouse Hotel just a ‘mango throw’ away from the Historic District and Duval Street.

Our accommodation was a small and beautifully appointed cottage with a patio out front and just across the street from The Hemingway House!

As there are so many places to stay in Key West and in the Florida Keys from big-name resort hotels, smaller motels and private guesthouses.

I would advise you to always book ahead – especially during the holidays – and I recommend the best way would be using an online booking site to immediately confirm your accommodation.

Our stay at The Lighthouse Hotel was wonderful.

DINING AND DRINKS

FOOD: The food options in Key West are spectacular and delicious whether you opt for fine dining or bar food. I adore delicious seafood and there’s so much choice with dinner on the veranda at Nine One Five Restaurant and Bar.

We particularly enjoyed Pinchers Crab Shack. Try the hot cheese and crab dip!

For a quick conch fritter – a la street food – head to B.O.’s Fish Wagon. Cuban classics can be savoured at El Siboney Restaurant and Caribbean food is said to be seriously salacious at Blue Heaven on the corner of Petronia and Thomas Street.

DRINKS: While experiencing the conch culture you must also head downtown to try Cuban Coffee Queen for a strong authentic cup of Cuban coffee that can be described as ‘sweet, strong and dangerously bold’. Sounds good to me!

Later in the day, Iabsolutely recommend having a margarita (or two) at the original Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville on Duval Street.

I also loved the fun atmosphere and drinking at the famous and unmissable Hogs Breath Saloon on Front Street and for live music and a night cap – in the Hemingway tradition – you must certainly visit Sloppy Joe’s Bar.

As a writer, I have always been fascinated by the life and works of Ernest Hemingway, so exploring the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum was a must!

The legendary author lived here with his wife Pauline in the 1930s and his residence is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

I found it fascinating to wander around the house. I was captivated by Hemingway’s writing studio and revelled in the iconic tales penned within its walls.

You can read more in the full post I’ve written about my visit to the Hemingway House.

Take the guided tour to learn fascinating anecdotes about Hemingway’s time in Key West and look out for the six-toed cats who are all descendants of Hemingway’s own six-toed cat called Snowball.

I think one of the best and most convenient introductions to Key West is to take a 60/90 minute street tour by trolly bus or train. This is a great way to identify all the key locations and can make it easier to navigate the streets later if you’re exploring by foot.

Klook.com (function (d, sc, u) { var s = d.createElement(sc), p = d.getElementsByTagName(sc)[0]; s.type = "text/javascript"; s.async = true; s.src = u; p.parentNode.insertBefore(s, p); })( document, "script", "https://affiliate.klook.com/widget/fe..." );

You can even do a ‘hop on hop off’ and save yourself a lot of walking on a hot day. Packages can include admission to the Truman Little White House, the Key West Aquarium, and The Shipwreck Treasure Museum.

I thought it was a lot of fun to ride the streets on the open air trolly and have all the interesting places pointed out to you by a well informed guide.

SOUTHERNMOST POINT BUOY

A trip to Key West wouldn’t be complete without a photo at the Southernmost Point Buoy. This iconic landmark was placed here in 1983 to mark the end point of the continental US and the closest spot to Cuba just 90 miles away.

I suggest you go early to avoid the crowds – as it’s one of the most photographed landmarks – and combine your visit with a walk through the charming nearby neighbourhood.

KEY WEST LIGHTHOUSE

The Key West Lighthouse was established in 1848 and it was decommissioned in 1969. Today this ‘sentinel of the sea’ is a monument to Key West’s maritime history and heritage. Visitors are invited to climb the 88 steps to the observation deck and it is well worth the effort for the 360 degree panoramic view especially if you can time your visit to experience a world-famous sunset. For more sunset activities find out more about how to book a sunset buffet dinner cruise or a sunset sail by schooner.

Klook.com (function (d, sc, u) { var s = d.createElement(sc), p = d.getElementsByTagName(sc)[0]; s.type = "text/javascript"; s.async = true; s.src = u; p.parentNode.insertBefore(s, p); })( document, "script", "https://affiliate.klook.com/widget/fe..." ); KEY WEST SHIPWRECK MUSEUM

Dive in and uncover an adventure and the maritime history of Key West at the Shipwreck Museum. This interactive museum tells the story of the island’s shipwreck salvaging past and daring lives of 19th-century wreckers.

You’ll feel like you have travelled back in time to 1856 and to the era of the wreckers that will fascinate you with real treasures, authentic artefacts, and wreckers recoveries on display here.

Back then, records show that at least one ship a week out of the hundred or so that would sail past the key, would find itself wrecked on the treacherous reef.

Notoriously, the waters off the Florida Keys were some of the most perilous waters in the world, due to bad weather, strong currents, and even hurricanes.

The wreckers of Key West were brave opportunists and would watch the reef from the observation tower. Once a wreck had been spotted and the word was out it was immediately salvaged and the spoils later sold at auction.

Wrecking on this industrious scale is what sustained the local islanders – making many very rich men – while supporting the island economy.

Over two floors the museum exhibits paintings and sculptures and other works by local artists. There’s also lots of interesting local and maritime history and artifacts.

When I was in Key West there was an Ernest Hemingway exhibition on at The Key West Museum that I was delighted and excited to explore having already explored his home.

The museum is housed inside the grand and faithfully restored old Custom House that now stands as a key landmark on the harbour and dates back to 1891.

The Tropic Cinema is a non-profit retro-style muti-screen movie theatre screening first-run indie, foreign, and documentary films as well as Hollywood blockbusters every day.

The Tropic also hosts music concerts and live performances and is just a few steps away from Duval Street on Eaton Street. You can’t miss its fabulous façade and the statue of Marylin Monroe posing on her famous grating outside. What a great (grate?) photo opportunity!

The Tropic Movie Theatre Key WestWhat a great (grate?) photo opportunity outside the Tropic! WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT KEY WEST

For the best combination of great weather, smaller crowds, and reasonable prices, the best time to visit is said to be from March to May, as during these months the weather is ideal with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit and the humidity is relatively low.

I visited right at the end of May (just after the Memorial Weekend holiday) and the weather was perfect.

Spring also brings exciting festivals, such as Conch Republic Days in April.

Summer, on the other hand, can be very hot and humid, with the added risk of hurricanes. Fall, particularly from September to November, is the peak of hurricane season, though it does come with lower hotel rates.

In the winter months of December through February, crowds start to thin out making it easier to enjoy the island without the peak-season rush and prices for hotels, and flights also tend to drop compared to the high season.

KEY WEST MAP - ATLANTIC HIGHWAY ONEWhat will your Key West adventure look like?

Key West is such a charming and pretty destination that it’s almost ‘Disneyesque’ in its appearance and in its opportunities for escapism and fun. It certainly offers something for every visitor from history enthusiasts and nature lovers and those simply looking to relax and enjoy the wonderfully laid-back island lifestyle.

So, now you’ve heard all about my trip – what will your Key West adventure look like?

I do hope you find all my suggestions for ‘key’ things to do helpful and informative.

Whatever you choose to do while in Key West, you’re sure to have lots of fabulous and memorable experiences, so do please let me know about them. I’d love to hear from you so don’t be shy to leave a comment below!

Travel and Food – A Journey of Flavours

TRAVEL AND FOOD – A JOURNEY OF FLAVOURS

Travel and food are two of life’s greatest pleasures and when combined they can create unforgettable experiences. Recently, I’ve enjoyed wandering through Ningxia Night Market in Taipei Taiwan in search of Michelin Star street food, I’ve sat at a food counter savouring okomoni-yaki and sizzling oysters in Miyajima Japan, and I’ve dined on moules-frites in a bistro in Bordeaux France.

I believe that travelling the world not only opens doors to new cultures and landscapes but also to culinary delights that awaken the senses and enrich the soul.

So, let’s embrace the adventure of travel and food, and let your taste buds lead the way to new and exciting discoveries.

Travel the world with me on an exciting journey of flavours!

Street food excites me as I feel that street food is the heartbeat of any city. It offers a window into the local culture and lifestyle and is often the first encounter I have with a country’s food scene.

When I’m jetlagged with travel fatigue and I’m feeling hungry then a simple and delicious baleada from a grab and go food truck in Honduras or a fragrant bowl of pho in Ho Chi Minh City while sitting on a low plastic stool at a small table on the pavement, provides an authentic taste of local life.

Street food can be stir-fried, deep-fried, flamed, steamed, stewed, sautéed, chargrilled, grilled, poached, broiled, boiled, barbecued, and even served raw.

It can be found off a food truck, from a street vendor with a sizzling wok, in a fabulous food court, a market, or hawker stall, and – as I found in Hakata Japan – in a small pop-up street food tent known as a ‘Yatai’.

TIPS FOR ENJOYING STREET FOOD

Be Adventurous: Don’t shy away from unfamiliar dishes. Many vendors offer samples, so you can taste before committing.

Follow the Locals: Where there’s a queue of locals, there’s usually a culinary gem.

Practice Food Safety: Opt for stalls with high turnover and freshly prepared ingredients to ensure quality and hygiene.

Local Convenience Stores: I love to buy a sandwich from Lawsons in Japan or a snack from a 7/11 in Thailand.

DISCOVERING HIDDEN GEMS: SMALL LOCAL RESTAURANTS

While street food offers a quick and delightful introduction to a culture’s cuisine, I have found that taking the time to find those ‘hidden gems’ in your destination of choice – those small local restaurants typically offering a more intimate dining experience – will often provide a deeper insight into regional cooking and a taste of authentic and seasonal local cuisine.

It’s wonderful to sit down on a balmy evening, enjoying a cozy atmosphere and a delicious meal at a local restaurant, to enhance your travel experience.

Smaller establishments can often take the time to connect with customers, sharing stories about the food and the community, which can lead to memorable conversations and recommendations.

Smaller local restaurants offer their own character and charm, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere with the decor, ambiance, and music. They reflect local culture, serving traditional dishes made from family recipes, allowing you to experience cultural immersion and the flavours of the region.

Many local restaurants are known for certain dishes, so be sure to ask the staff for recommendations. If there is a tasting menu on offer, I would recommend this as a great way to experience the chef’s full range of creativity and expertise.

Small local restaurants – as opposed to the chain or larger restaurants – can be hidden gems that are often overlooked by tourists. Look for places frequented by locals and you’re more likely to have a more relaxed dining experience.

Locals often know the best spots that aren’t listed in guidebooks but I’ve often used online platforms and food forums to gain insights into hidden gems.

You’ll also be contributing to the local economy because your custom helps sustain small businesses and supports local farmers and suppliers.

Penang: One of my favourite food experiences ever was in Penang Malaysia. Penang is known as the Food Capital of Malaysia and the backpacking husband and I had met up with some friends for an extended dinner out and about in George Town, Penang’s UNESCO World Heritage site and historic capital. During our fabulous foodfest we managed to have our aperitifs, our appetisers, our starters, our main courses – including a seafood BBQ at a fantastic food court – then our desserts plus a night cap at an array of very different and totally unique food venues all over town!

Langkawi: Also in Malaysia – on the island of Langkawi – I’ve eaten the most memorable, fresh, and deliciously flavourful seafood. On both my visits to Langkawi I’ve been sure to dine at restaurants specialising in shellfish and other seafoods. There are street food stalls, small off the street restaurants, and large busy seafood restaurants along the main strip opposite Cenang Beach. All are amazing!

Seafood in Langkawi MalaysiaSeafood in Langkawi Malaysia

Tokyo: In Tokyo Japan I wanted to try several types of sushi. Firstly, I tried a budget chain restaurant where the sushi is delivered to your table by conveyor belt. Then, I dined at a small independent sushi restaurant, sitting at a narrow counter, while watching my sushi being expertly prepared by skilled sushi chef with a very sharp knife. Each carefully crafted piece of sushi was presented individually and by hand and each piece was delicate and bursting with flavour!

Miyajima: Also in Japan, while exploring Miyajima Island, I discovered grilled oysters and oyster curry bread and oysters baked in lemon sponge dough balls and the famously yummy Miyajima Okomoni-Yaki – a Japanese dish cooked and served on a griddle. ‘Okonomi’ means ‘what you like’ and ‘yaki’ means ‘grilled’.

Taipei: While in Taiwan, I went in search of Michelin starred street food at one of the most famous street food markets in Taipei – The Ningxia Night Market. I was told on authority that the oyster omelette (O-a-chian) here is the very best in Taiwan. It has a delicious signature sweet and tangy Taiwanese sauce drizzled over it and has a Michelin Star to its name!

Taichung: Feng Chia Night Market in Taichung City is famously the largest night market in Taiwan with around 400 vendors offering their wares every night. We could hardly wait until after dark to try the amazing variety of traditional Taiwanese street foods on offer. Although, we found that waiting is often necessary, as the most popular vendors had long lines of people patiently waiting in anticipation of something so good it’s absolutely worth the wait!

Hong Kong: Feeling hungry in Hong Kong, the backpacking husband and I found a restaurant called Dim Sum Square. We actually went twice as they had the best dim sum we’d ever tasted. As you might expect, I believe the best dim sum is in Hong Kong!

Dining All Over The World: It looks from my enthusiasm for food in Asia that I’m advocating Asian food as The Best In The World – but I’ve also enjoyed delicious and memorable food in Central America, the Caribbean, USA and Canada, in parts of Africa and The Middle East, as well as the UK and Europe.

So I’m on the fence about calling out any one fabulous foodie destination – The Very Best –  I will say that lots of the food I’ve experienced and enjoyed while travelling around the world has made my life a flavourful journey!

Travel and food are two of life’s greatest pleasures Travel and food are two of life’s greatest pleasures! QUIRKY AND UNUSUAL FOOD ADVENTURES

For the adventurous at heart, quirky and unusual food experiences can add an extra layer of excitement to your travels.

From dining in the dark to eating insects – see my section on unique culinary experiences below – these experiences challenge the conventional and often lead to memorable and interesting stories to tell.

I do consider myself an adventurous eater – as I’m far from fussy – BUT I’m not sure I’d ever be able to eat insects, bugs, or worms! What about you? Would you be prepared to try creepy crawly cuisine?

Korean BBQ: I love to eat at an authentic Korean BBQ restaurant when I’m visiting my son in South Korea. It’s such a unique experience to cook your own food as supplied to you raw to sizzle on your hot coal firepit in the centre of the table!

Dining in the Dark: Restaurants like Dans le Noir in Paris invite guests to eat in complete darkness, enhancing the senses of taste and smell.

Insect Cuisine: In countries like Thailand and Mexico, insects are a common delicacy. Trying dishes like chapulines (grasshoppers) or fried crickets – I’m told – can be a fascinating and tasty experience.

Molecular Gastronomy: At establishments like The Fat Duck in the UK, chefs use scientific techniques to create surprising and delightful dishes that defy traditional culinary boundaries.

EMBRACING THE UNCONVENTIONAL

Keep an Open Mind: Approach every dish with curiosity and openness, even if it seems strange at first.

Share the Experience: Dining with others can make unusual food experiences more enjoyable and less daunting.

Document the Adventure: Take photos and notes to remember the unique aspects of your culinary journey.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING OPEN TO NEW EXPERIENCES

Travelling is not just about seeing new places; it’s about experiencing them fully and food plays a crucial role in this. Being open to trying new tastes and food experiences can significantly enrich your travel adventures. It allows you to connect with different cultures on a deeper level, understand their traditions, and appreciate the amazing diversity of our world.

TIPS FOR EMBRACING CULINARY ADVENTURES

Educate Yourself: Learn about the local food culture before your trip to enhance your appreciation and understanding.

Engage with Locals: Conversations with locals can provide insights into the history and significance of certain dishes.

Reflect on Your Experiences: Take time to reflect on how these culinary adventures have broadened your horizons and enriched your life.

Take a Local Cooking Class: Get hands on and learn how to cook authentically from a local.

Thailand: Koh Samui

Thailand: Koh Samui

Nestled in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui will beckon you to Thailand with a temptingly tropical vibe, a paradise of swaying palm trees, gorgeous beaches, and the promise of an unforgettably idyllic escape.

I’ve stayed on Koh Samui many times but usually for a few days either side of travelling to and from exploring other places in Thailand. The island has the convenience of both an airport and a ferry point, so it’s a strategic transit hub for destination hopping in the Gulf of Thailand – albeit one that will certainly tempt you to stay a while.

Koh Samui has long had a reputation as sleepy-by-day and party-by-night backpacker island, with a laid-back bohemian vibe, basic beach hut accommodations, and casual beanbag seating at tiki bars set on impossibly beautiful tropical beaches.

Lamai Beach Koh SamuiLamai Beach Koh Samui

More recently, however, the island has been redesignated as an upmarket and swanky holiday destination. With the development of high-class hotels and five-star resorts and wellness retreats, there’s now also sunrise yoga on the beach and cocktails at sunset.

Koh Samui without doubt a stunning island that can indeed offer all things to all people.

What would be your idea of holiday bliss? My idea of holiday bliss is sitting on a squishy beach bean bag on a balmy Koh Samui evening, with a bottle of Leo or Chang in my hand, while the sun dips below the horizon line and fire dancers start spin on the tideline.

The Backpacking Housewife Sitting on a squishy beach bean bag on a balmy Koh Samui eveningSitting on a squishy beach bean bag on a balmy Koh Samui evening

If you are a beach-babe, a pool-side lounger, a jungle-hiker, a culture seeker, or a water sports enthusiast, Koh Samui has it all and is the perfect vacation spot for you.

It will sway you with its palm tree slung rope swings and take your breath away with landscapes of lush rainforests, offering stunning inner waterfalls and outer coral reefs.

Lots of people come to the Gulf of Thailand to snorkel and scuba dive in warm crystal-clear waters and to try windsurfing, jet-skiing, or paddleboarding.

Koh Samui also has a rich cultural heritage through its temples, markets, and traditional festivals and must-visit spiritual sites offering insight into local Buddhist beliefs.

And, of course, it now has the hugely trending appeal of The White Lotus effect.

Let’s travel to Thailand and explore the paradise island that is Koh Samui!

There are lots of beaches all around Koh Samui making this destination a beach lovers paradise. Chaweng and Lamai are the most popular beaches and they can get busy. But there’s always a quieter beach not too far away, if you are looking for peace and quiet, and don’t need so many onsite amenities. Lots of locals and long stayers will claim to know of a ‘secret beach’ so it’s always worth asking for recommendations from your hotel reception or fellow guests.

Chaweng Beach: A vibrant nightlife and bustling atmosphere, Chaweng is the main beach on the island and is perfect for those looking to be close to the action. Almost 7 kilometres of wonderful white sand and lots of beach activities.

Lamai Beach: A quieter alternative to Chaweng, Lamai offers beautiful beaches and a range of accommodation options.

Silver Beach: Sometimes called Crystal Bay. Located between Chaweng and Lamai beaches, a favourite with snorkellers.

Coral Cove: Picturesque with big boulders and a secluded bay. Perfect spot for reading and enjoying peace and quiet.

Bophut Beach: This area offers a more laid-back vibe and is home to the charming Fisherman’s Village.

Maenam Beach: Known for its tranquil 5 kilometre beach, Maenam is ideal for families and seeking peace and relaxation.

Taling Gnam Beach: Beautiful soft white sand beach with a reef so a great spot for snorkelling.

Lipa Noi Beach: A little north of Taling Gnam beach and a quiet spot for sun worshiping.

Bang Po Beach: Another of Koh Samui’s quieter beaches and the location of a popular seafood restaurant.

Choeng Mon Beach: A family friendly beach close to the Big Buddha Temple.

Samrong Beach: Close to the airport and in a bay but a world away from Chaweng.

Thongson Beach: Secluded small beach with shallow bathing.

Koh Samui is easily to reach by air and sea. The island has its own airport Samui International Airport with direct flights from Bangkok and other major Asian cities.

To reach Koh Samui from Bangkok, you can opt for a short domestic flight, which takes about an hour, or choose a combination of road and ferry travel that will be less expensive, but can typically take around ten to twelve hours.

The best time to visit Koh Samui is from December to April, when the weather is dry and sunny, making it ideal for beach activities and outdoor exploration. However, the island’s tropical climate ensures warm temperatures year-round, with the rainy season typically running from October to November. Take a look at my post The Best and Worst Time To Visit Thailand for a closer look at weather patterns and monsoon cycles in different areas of Thailand.

WHITE LOTUS – TROUBLE IN THAILAND?

While Koh Samui’s popularity and local economy has been boosted by being the tropical location for series three of the popular fantasy TV show The White Lotus, it is feared that a sudden increase of tourists could have a detrimental effect on the island’s natural environment and put a strain on the island resources.

Travel agents are reporting a huge spike in bookings for Thailand. Resorts on Koh Samui are planning to offer tourists ‘White Lotus Themed Packages’. Airlines are already increasing flights to cope with demand for travel to the island in 2025.

We saw what happened to Koh Phi Phi and Maya Bay after its starring role in the The Beach. So many people wanted to follow in the footsteps of Leonardo DiCaprio and experience the ‘secret beach’ for themselves that it was almost destroyed.

The authorities had to take the decision to close Maya Beach to tourists. After three years, in 2022, it was reopened with strict controls on visitor numbers to protect the beach, the marine life, and the coral reef.

Challenges for Koh Samui as a result of this surge in tourism could result in overcrowding, further freshwater scarcity, environmental degradation, infrastructure problems and waste management issues.

Because everything consumable on an island has to be brought in and waste had to be removed to the mainland.

If you choose to stay in one of the top resorts to experience the fantasy of The White Lotus effect for yourself, then you will undoubtably be cossetted and shielded from any real-life infrastructure issues, such as water scarcity, as water will be bought privately by the resort. A luxury not afforded to all.

I believe that Koh Samui welcomes and needs the boost of revenue that tourism brings, but in my opinion, all visitors – and this applies to anywhere not just to Koh Samui – should be aware of their environmental impact by being as responsible as possible during their visit to preserve their destination’s natural beauty and vital resources for others and for the future.

HOW TO BE A RESPONSIBLE TOURIST HOW TO BE A RESPONSIBLE TOURIST

Choose Sustainable Accommodations: Choose hotels and guesthouses that implement eco-friendly practices, such as energy conservation, waste reduction, and support for local communities.

Minimise Waste: Carry reusable water bottles, bags, and containers to reduce plastic waste. Dispose of trash responsibly and participate in local recycling programs if available.

Respect Wildlife: Avoid activities that exploit animals, such as elephant rides or visiting tiger temples. Instead, find ethical wildlife experiences and support local conservation efforts. Use reef safe sunscreen. If you brought your toiletries with you in plastic bottles then why not take them back with you rather than add them to the landfill on the mainland?

Supporting Local Economies: Shop locally and buy your goods and souvenirs from local artisans and markets rather than large, international chains.

Local Cuisine: Dining at local restaurants and food stalls not only provides an authentic experience but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with imported foods. Take a local cooking class to learn how to cook Thai food!

Hire Local Guides: Use local tour operators and guides who have a vested interest in preserving their community and environment. I recommend you find your local tour guides using Get Your Guide.

Visiting Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations: Exploring lesser-known areas can help reduce the pressure on popular tourist spots and spreads the economic benefits of tourism to more communities.

Are you planning a vacation/holiday in Thailand this year?

Are you planning to go to Koh Samui?

Are you inspired by the White Lotus TV series?

Miami: South Beach

USA Travel: Miami South Beach

Miami South Beach is a fabulous and dreamy destination in the USA for all travellers and holiday-makers looking for sun, style, and a bit of history. When I first visited South Beach I was in Miami Florida on a weekend transit layover between travels in Central America back over to Europe.

I was excited to head straight over to the iconic South Beach area to explore the stunning oceanfront, admire the famous Art Deco District architecture, and to experience famously world-class people watching!

So, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller, let this be your Ultimate Visitor’s Guide to making the most of the dazzling tropical paradise of Miami South Beach – or as the locals love to call it – ‘SoBe‘!

It was Memorial Weekend – at the end of May – when the backpacking husband and I arrived on South Beach, to find that Ocean Drive had been cordoned off and pedestrianised in anticipation of the crowds of people expected to descend for the holiday weekend.

We checked into our hotel and headed straight across to the beach, where the sun blazed onto our overheated and reddened faces and the sand burned molten hot under our melting flipflops.

After taking photos on the beach, we leisurely strolled Espanola Way in the dappled sunshine, then we took to the boardwalk to admire the pastel-coloured Art Deco buildings lining Ocean Drive, feeling like we’d stepped back in time into another era.

Did you know that the South Beach district of Miami was once upon a time a coconut plantation? It’s hard to imagine it when what you see today is the result of significant development in the early 20th century.

In the 1920’s and 1930’s, South Beach became a hotspot for tourism, attracting wealthy visitors with its luxury hotels and vibrant nightlife. This was when the Art-Deco District in Miami Beach became a designated area between 5th and 23rd streets – was born.

A preservation movement in the 1970’s and 1980’s saved many of these historic buildings from demolition, leading to the area’s resurgence as a cultural landmark and destination.

Today, the area is home to over eight hundred preserved buildings that date back to that era, showcasing pastel-coloured structures adorned with geometric patterns, neon accents, and sleek curves of vintage charm and distinctive architectural style that now completely defines the Miami aesthetic.

So many of these wonderfully restored buildings are now fancy retro-hotels. Notable buildings include The Betsy Hotel, The Beacon, Park Central, Avalon, The Colony Hotel, The Carlyle, and The Breakwater.

If you have the time, I recommend taking a guided walking tour of the Art Deco District as it is certainly one of the best ways to learn more about the rich history behind these structures from their boom years to the preservation efforts of today.

If you’re a history buff or simply love great design then this is an experience not to be missed.

If you appreciate sightseeing with food then you can combine eating and seeing with a Food and Fun Art Deco Walking Tour!

Feeling thirsty after our beach and promenade walk, we happily headed across the street in search of an oasis of shade, which we found at an Ocean Drive street-side bar, where we could sit under an umbrella casually sipping cocktails, while watching models on photoshoots, musicians playing lively tunes, or rollerbladers gliding past us in dazzling outfits, or in hardly any clothes at all.

It’s true that few places in the world offer people-watching quite like Ocean Drive on South Beach, where sun-seekers from all walks of life offer a spectacle of culture, energy, and fun. The sidewalks of Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road are like a runway of vibrant personalities. From ultra-chic fashionistas to the laid-back travellers looking to escape the ordinary – to a mix of celebrities, artists – and eccentric locals.

South Beach is often simply referred to as ‘SoBe’ which is synonymous with its magnificent stretch of sandy shoreline.

The beach itself is a haven for sun-seekers and ocean lovers. With crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft, powdery sand, it’s the perfect place to unwind, soak up the sun, and enjoy the gentle ocean breezes.

You’ll find an array of colourful lifeguard stands dotting the shoreline, each a symbol of Miami’s artistic flair and for those of you who love water sports, South Beach is a haven for jet skiing, paddleboarding, and even parasailing.

Early risers can enjoy the sunrise over the horizon, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, while latecomers can revel in the spectacular sunsets. South Beach’s lively atmosphere means you’ll always have someone or something happening around you on the beach, from beach games, to fitness enthusiasts jogging along the shore.

Whether you’re planning a sun-soaked vacation or a cultural escapade, timing your visit to South Beach, Miami, can significantly enhance your experience. So, choosing the right time to visit South Beach depends on your preferences and priorities. If you seek sunny, hassle-free days and a bustling social scene, the winter months are your best bet.

However, if you’re looking for a quieter and more economical stay, and don’t mind the gamble with the weather, the off-season could still offer a memorable experience.

Here is a summary of the best and worst times to visit.

BEST – December to MAY

Peak Season: In South Beach, due to the pleasantly warm temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (about 24-30°C) and lower humidity, the months of December to May is considered peak season. The chance of rain is minimal making it ideal for beach activities and outdoor exploration.

The cultural calendar during peak season is bustling with events like Art Basel Miami Beach in December, the Miami International Boat Show in February, and South Beach Wine and Food Festival in February/March, attracting visitors from around the world. Check out fabulous things to do in Miami South Beach!

While it is certainly the busiest time of the year, the lively atmosphere and bustling streets add to the energy and charm of South Beach. It’s perfect for those who enjoy vibrant crowds and want to immerse themselves in the social scene.

The Century Art Deco Building South Beach Miami WORST – June to November

Hurricane Season: This period marks the hurricane season in Miami with the highest likelihood of storms occurring from August to October. High humidity and temperatures often soar into the 90s Fahrenheit (over 32°C), coupled with frequent rain showers, which can dampen outdoor plans.

Although the crowds thin out compared to the peak season, the unpredictability of the weather can lead to unexpected itinerary changes and potential travel disruptions. On the flip side, this is the best time for budget-conscious travellers. Hotels and attractions often offer discounts and deals to attract visitors, making it a more affordable time to travel if you’re willing to take a chance on the weather.

A refined, luxury hotel blending Art Deco charm with colonial elegance. Art Deco charm with colonial elegance discover the magic of South Beach Miami!

South Beach is more than just a glamorous party destination – it’s a place filled with history, culture, and undeniable charm.

So, whether you’re in Miami for a weekend getaway or an extended stay, pack your sunscreen and soak in the sun, put on your most comfortable shoes and go marvel at Art Deco landmarks, indulge in world-class cuisine, and dance the night away.

Because there’s something magical about Miami South Beach!

Lauderdale by the Sea: Old Florida’s Seaside Town

Lauderdale by the Sea: Old Florida’s Seaside Town

Lauderdale by the Sea is a picturesque historic seaside town on Florida’s Atlantic Coastline. Just 15 miles north of Fort Lauderdale and 33 miles north of Miami it’s a perfect place to visit if you’re looking for a slice of Old Florida and some laid-back beach holiday vacation vibes.

Whenever I find myself in Florida USA, as I often do while travelling to or from the Caribbean or Central America, I’ll prefer to fly into Fort Lauderdale rather than landing in Miami.

It’s so easy and convenient to take a taxi to Lauderdale by the Sea from Fort Lauderdale airport and, in just the blink of an eye, you’ll feel like you’ve been whizzed back into the 1920’s and to a place that will welcome you with it’s refreshing small-town charm and sun-drenched beauty.

The town was incorporated in 1927 and quickly became a tranquil escape for those seeking solace from the growing urban sprawl of South Florida. Forget high-rise condos and crowded boardwalks – Lauderdale by the Sea managed to preserve its quaint, small-scale nostalgic charm – with vintage-style architecture and mom-and-pop establishments lining the streets.

To me, one of the most endearing aspects of Lauderdale by the Sea is its commitment to preserving a slower pace of life, which so appeals to me and I feel sure that – now I’ve shared this ‘hidden gem’ with you – it will appeal to you too.

In Lauderdale by the Sea, chain stores and massive resorts are noticeably absent, replaced by colourful low-rise inns and boutique hotels like Sea Garden by the Sea or Tides Inn Hotel where you can experience Old Florida hospitality.

It’s almost like a mini-south beach with its adored and historic art-deco charm.

On our last stay in Lauderdale by the Sea, the backpacking husband and I chose to stay at the cosy Sea Garden by the Sea – a retro-style motel 300 meters from the beach and very like you see in old American movies – with a two-story building wrapped around a small swimming pool.

One of the perks is that there will often be a BBQ in situ that is available for guests to use and for us, often travelling on a budget, we will usually head straight to Publics Supermarket for food we can throw onto that BBQ grill.

In the photo below, having just spend six months in Honduras Central America and on a small island in the Caribbean – where supplies arrived by boat twice a week and where in the local store and we might have just missed buying the last pineapple – we could hardly believe our eyes at the feast available to us in Florida!

FIND YOUR PERFECT ACCOMODATION IN LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA MY FAVOURITE SPOTS IN LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA

I love how Lauderdale by the Sea the town is so compact and pedestrian friendly. It’s a joy to walk into the downtown area and stroll on Commercial Boulevard, the main artery of the town, where you’ll find a vibrant mix of locally owned boutiques, cozy cafes, and colourful restaurants.

If you’re not into walking, especially in the heat of the day, catch a free ride on the ‘Circuit by the Sea’ shuttle to and from all the popular spots – like the beach, Galt Mile, the local shops and restaurants, and more, by downloading The Ride Circuit App to ride the all-electric shared vehicles. Check out the website for access to The App, maps, and service times.

One of my favourite spots to grab a bite of lunch is Aruba Beach Café, a breezy restaurant overlooking the water. Whether it’s fresh seafood, Caribbean-inspired fare, or a fruity cocktail, you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled into a beach side paradise here.

For dessert, why not swing by Sloan’s Ice Cream, where quirky décor and decadent flavours make for a perfect post-beach treat?

El Prado Park is the area’s most popular beachfront park and the Beach Pavilion is another restful spot for people watching with an ocean view. Lined with Adirondack chairs and boat benches, you can sit and take it easy between beach activities or shopping in Anglin’s Square.

By night, the area comes alive with live music, twinkling string lights, and an array of outdoor seating perfect for soaking in the balmy Florida evenings.

Lauderdale by the Sea - a beach side paradiseLauderdale by the Sea – a beach side paradise LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA BEACH

And – now that I’ve mentioned the beach – in the heart of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea lies a pristine two and a half mile long beach, where soft, golden sands stretch for miles and miles, meeting the clear, aquamarine waters of the Atlantic.

The beach here is stunning and well-maintained and there is direct access onto the beach from the picturesque parks at Laura Ward Park and El Prado Park as well as the portals at Pine Avenue, Beach Pavilion and Ocean Driveway, South Alleyway, Datura Avenue, Hibiscus Avenue and Palm Avenue.

It’s not as crowded as some other nearby beach spots, making it ideal for a peaceful getaway.

It has a wide, clean shoreline, and there are beach chairs and umbrella rentals, showers, and picnic areas available.

The Atlantic Ocean here is usually calm, with gentle waves, making it great for going for a refreshing dip and for paddleboarding.

But do be aware of the signs warning about rip tides and what to do if you get caught in one and also note there are no lifeguards at the beach and so entering the water is at your own risk.

Lauderdale by the Sea Beach - soft, golden sands stretch for miles and milesLauderdale by the Sea Beach – soft, golden sands stretch for miles and miles FLORIDA’S BEACH DIVING CAPITAL

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea sits on a natural coral reef system, making it a mecca for marine life enthusiasts and some of the best snorkelling and diving in Florida.

With its crystal-clear waters, abundant marine life, and easily accessible reefs, this coastal town’s proximity to Florida’s three-tiered coral reef system makes it a dream location for divers and offers some of the most unique and rewarding diving opportunities for beginners and seasoned divers alike.

So one of the standout features of diving in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is its shore diving.

You don’t need to book an expensive boat charter to explore the underwater world here -just grab your gear or rent gear from a local dive shop – and wade into the surf because you’re just a short swim away from colourful coral formations and schools of tropical fish.

The underwater world of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is bursting with marine biodiversity so expect to encounter:

Tropical Fish: Angelfish, butterflyfish, damselfish, and more.

Crustaceans: Lobsters, crabs, and shrimp hiding in coral crevices.

Larger Creatures: Sea turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and moray eels.

Seasonal Visitors: During the summer months, you might spot tarpon or barracuda cruising by.

The Backpacking Husband Scuba DivingThe Backpacking Husband loves to go scuba diving SCUBA DIVER’S PARADISE

For those who prefer guided experiences, local dive shops like Gold Coast Scuba and Deep Blue Divers offer rentals, lessons, and guided dives.

For those seeking a bit of history and adventure, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea offers access to the region’s famous “Wreck Trek.” This underwater trail of sunken ships and artificial reefs provides divers with a unique combination of marine life and maritime history.

One of the highlights is the SS Copenhagen, a 19th-century cargo ship that ran aground in 1900 and now rests in 25-30 feet of water. This site is part of Florida’s Underwater Archaeological Preserve and has become a vibrant habitat for coral, sponges, and schools of fish. The shallow depth makes it accessible to snorkelers as well.

Local dive shops are well-equipped and popular options include:

Gold Coast Scuba: Known for its welcoming atmosphere, they offer gear rentals, certifications, and guided shore dives.

Deep Blue Divers: A go-to for private lessons and custom dive trips.

Force-E Scuba Centres: With locations across South Florida, they provide everything from gear maintenance to reef conservation events.

THE THREE-TIERED REEF SYSTEM

The town’s reef lines run parallel to the coast and offer varying depths and marine ecosystems:

First Reef Line (Closest to Shore): Perfect for beginner divers and snorkelers, this shallow reef sits just 100-200 yards offshore. At depths of 10-20 feet, you’ll find hard and soft corals, sea fans, sponges, and schools of tropical fish such as parrotfish, sergeant majors, and wrasse.

Second Reef Line (Intermediate Depth): Located about half a mile offshore, this reef lies in 30-40 feet of water. Here, divers can expect to see larger marine life, including nurse sharks, stingrays, lobsters, and even sea turtles. The second reef also features fascinating coral formations and ledges teeming with life.

Third Reef Line (Advanced Diving): This outer reef lies further offshore in 50-70 feet of water. It’s a playground for more experienced divers, with dramatic coral structures, vibrant biodiversity, and occasional sightings of barracudas or eagle rays.

SEASIDE ACTIVITIES FOR EVERYONE

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea isn’t just about the beach or diving on shipwrecks because there’s lots more on offer. Why not start your day with a beachfront yoga session, where the ocean breeze and lapping waves enhance your zen.

Take an evening walk along the beach or pier to soak in breath taking sunsets.

And, at the weekend, don’t miss the town’s live music performances.

Lauderdale by the Sea’s most popular beach park is El Prado Park. It’s worth knowing that it’s also the location for the weekly farmer’s market (December through May).

Lauderdale by the Sea Beach -The beach here is stunning and well-maintained The beach here is stunning and well-maintained WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA

We’ve usually visited in the hot and high season – our last visit was in August last year – but Lauderdale-by-the-Sea offers a delightful coastal experience year-round.

Of course, the best time to visit depends on what exactly you’re looking for in your vacation. For me, Lauderdale by the Sea is all about relaxation and beach walks and lazy afternoon cocktails at Aruba Beach Cafe whereas for my backpacking husband its all about the diving. But to answer your question:

Spring (March to May): Spring is arguably one of the best times to visit Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The weather is warm but not overly hot, with temperatures averaging in the high 70s to mid-80s°F (25-29°C). Humidity levels are moderate, and rainfall is minimal.

Highlights: Perfect beach days with plenty of sunshine. Smaller crowds compared to winter tourists. Excellent diving and snorkelling conditions with clear water and abundant marine life. Local events like Easter celebrations and music festivals often take place during this season.

Summer (June to August): Summer is a popular time for families and divers, thanks to the warm waters and relaxed vibe. Temperatures hover around the mid-80s to low 90s°F (29-33°C), and the ocean is at its warmest, making it ideal for water activities like snorkelling, scuba diving, and paddleboarding.

Things to Keep in Mind: Afternoon thunderstorms are common but short-lived. Hotels and accommodations may offer lower rates compared to the peak winter season.

This is sea turtle nesting season! You may spot roped-off nests on the beach and even catch a guided night time turtle walk to witness hatchlings making their way to the sea. If you’d love to see turtles hatching you must read my post Volunteering: Sea Turtle Conservation.

Autumn / Fall (September to November): Autumn /Fall is a fantastic time for budget-conscious travellers or for people who just happen to find themselves in Florida at that time of year. Temperatures remain warm, averaging in the low to mid-80s°F (27-29°C), and the summer crowds have thinned out.

Fall offers prime diving and snorkelling, as the reef teems with marine life after the summer. Hurricane season peaks in September, so travellers should monitor weather forecasts. However, late October and November are generally more stable.

Events like the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Craft Fair and local festivals add to the charm.

Winter (December to February): Winter is peak season in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, attracting snowbirds and vacationers escaping colder climates. The weather is mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 60s to mid-70s°F (20-24°C), and the town buzzes with energy. Perfect for outdoor dining, walking tours, and beach lounging without the intense heat.

Festive events, including holiday markets and seaside New Year’s celebrations. Pristine diving and snorkelling, with cooler water temperatures (around 72-76°F) and excellent visibility. But of course in high season that means higher hotel and flight prices during this time. I’d recommend you book accommodations well in advance.

Why Visit Lauderdale-by-the-Sea?

In a world of overdeveloped tourist hubs, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a breath of fresh air.

The community celebrated its 75th birthday in 2024 and it’s been said that in another 75 years they hope Lauderdale by the Sea will continue to look and feel the same as now.

From its welcoming locals and historic charm to its stunning natural beauty and abundant activities, this is the kind of place where memories are made.

So, pack your flip-flops, grab your snorkelling gear, and get ready to experience Florida’s coast the way it was meant to be—relaxed, vibrant, and undeniably beautiful.

Does Lauderdale-By-The-Sea have a pier?

Anglin’s Pier at Lauderdale by the Sea off Commercial Boulevard is privately owned and one of only four piers in the county. It is currently under reconstruction and closed to the public, since Hurricane Irma caused extensive damage to the Pier, back in September 2017.

How far is Lauderdale by the Sea from the airport?

Lauderdale by the Sea is an easy drive from anywhere in South Florida. The distance between Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is conveniently just 15 miles.

Have you ever stayed in Lauderdale by the Sea?

If not, how do you like the sound of this hidden gem?

Let me know in the comments – I’d love to hear from you!

Road Trip from Las Vegas: The Grand Canyon – Hoover Dam – and Route 66

Road Trip from Las Vegas To The Grand Canyon

A Road Trip from Las Vegas to The Grand Canyon is an exciting and fabulous way to take a break from Fabulous Las Vegas!

If you are wondering if it’s worth driving from Las Vegas to The Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona USA – I say yes!

Even better – I recommend you take a bus tour to travel in comfort and to leave the driving to someone else – leaving you free to concentrate on all the surrounding surreal scenery and focus on the entire epic journey along the way.

In this article, I’m sharing with you what was a fabulous adventure to tick off a top bucket list experience.

The road route from Las Vegas to the South Rim of The Grand Canyon takes in views of Lake Mead, crosses over the Hoover Dam, and then travels along the historic Mother Road of Route 66.

Along the way, we stopped off at the quirky historic towns of Flagstaff and Seligman and Kingman before we finally arriving at our destination and walking along The Rim Trail from Mather Point to Bright Angel Lodge, from where we were able to take in the incredible and awe-inspiring views along the South Rim of The Grand Canyon.

I feel sure after reading this post and seeing my photos you too will feel inspired to follow my tips and recommendations in planning your own road trip itinerary from Las Vegas – City of Lost Wages to The Grand Canyon and to one of the Natural Wonders Of The World!

The Backpacking Housewife and Backpacking Husband at The Grand CanyonThe Backpacking Housewife and Backpacking Husband at The Grand CanyonAFFILIATE NOTICE 202

The West Rim of the Grand Canyon is closest to Las Vegas at 130 miles (210km) which is about a 2.5 hour drive.

But we chose to go to The South Rim which is further away at 275 miles (440 km) and around a 4.5 hour drive.

There are lots of options for tour operators from Las Vegas to The Grand Canyon and we chose to book our road trip to The South Rim online with KLOOK whom I can personally recommend to you.

The bus/coach was large and comfortable and our driver was competent, friendly, and knowledgeable.

The all-day bus tour included an early morning pick up and late night drop off at our hotel in Las Vegas and a continental breakfast, a deli-style lunch and included National Park Fees.

Just outside Las Vegas is Lake Mead and it’s immediately refreshing on the eyes to see its blue waters shimmering in the desert landscape.

Lake Mead is named after Elwood Mead and it was formed in 1935 by the construction of the iconic Hoover Dam on the Colorado River.

It is the largest man-made reservoir in the United States providing water to farmland and millions of people in Nevada, Arizona, California, and Mexico.

Interestingly, several towns were submerged when the reservoir was created including St. Thomas, Nevada, which occasionally re-emerges when water levels drop as do several ‘islands’ such as the Boulder Islands.

When full, Lake Mead holds 26.12 million acre-feet of water, but worryingly, the lake is reportedly now at less than 50 percent of its water capacity due to drought and increased demand and have reached record lows in recent years.

This has exposed the “bathtub ring,” a white mineral deposit on the canyon walls.

These days, Lake Mead is part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and supports a variety of wildlife, including bighorn sheep, coyotes, bald eagles, and peregrine falcons and the water itself is home to fish like striped bass and catfish.

Popular activities on and around the lake include camping, boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and scuba diving.

Lake Mead is a unique diving destination with underwater attractions like the submerged town of St. Thomas and the wreck of a World War II B-29 Superfortress bomber that crashed into the lake in 1948.

The blue waters of Lake Mead shimmering in the desert landscapeViews of Lake Mead shimmering in the desert landscape THE HOOVER DAM

The Hoover Dam is an interesting stop off on route to The Grand Canyon and without a doubt a breath-taking feat of construction and engineering and architectural design.

It was really interesting to travel over the U-shaped concrete construction across the Colorado River.

But, once again, we can see how a clear white band betrays the low water levels.

The Hoover Dam is a popular stop off on the way to The Grand CanyonThe Hoover Dam is a stop off between Las Vegas and The Grand Canyon

Our guide shared an interesting and fun fact that the dam straddles two states – Nevada and Arizona – so it is possible to stand in two states at once and also cross a time zone boundary!

The dam took five years to complete during the time of The Great Depression and provided thousands of jobs during what was a challenging period in U.S. history to provide hydroelectric power to California, Nevada and Arizona.

The dam is an impressive 726 feet tall (roughly the height of a 60-story building), 1,244 feet long, and 660 feet thick at the base, and on its completion in 1936, the Hoover Dam was the largest dam in the world and remains a symbol of engineering brilliance.

Janice Horton Stopping off to view The Hoover Dam on route to The Grand CanyonStopping off the bus to view The Hoover Dam on route to Grand Canyon THE MOTHER ROAD – ROUTE 66

Route 66 was America’s first continuous stretch of highway.

Established in 1926, it stretched almost two and a half thousand miles from Chicago to Los Angeles.

These days, it’s mostly been replaced by modern Interstate highways, but it’s legendary status as the most famous road in America still remains.

The historic road can still be seen today where 87 miles of Route 66 passes through the historic towns of Flagstaff , the old Santa-Fe railroad town of Seligman and the old road to Kingman.

Passing through these quirky old historic towns really is like travelling back in time!

But it’s also possible to stay over and so do check out my list of hotels in Flagstaff and the tiny town of Seligman.

THE GRAND CANYON SOUTH RIM

We chose the South Rim for the widest and most expansive views of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River far below.

The South Rim also offers the visitor various facilities and hiking routes for most abilities and The Grand Canyon Village with its shops and lodges.

It’s also at the South Rim where you’ll find the iconic and wonderfully rustic looking Bright Angel Lodge.

The Grand Canyon can be viewed at four distinct points: The South Rim, Grand Canyon West, Grand Canyon East, and the North Rim but it’s The South Rim that’s most visited and the most popular part of the Grand Canyon National Park.

I’ve listed these various viewing points with a summary of their unique vistas below.

Janice Horton The Backpacking Housewife taking lots of photos from the South Rim of The Grand CanyonTaking lots of photos from the South Rim of The Grand Canyon MOST POPULAR VIEWING POINTS AT THE SOUTH RIM

Mather Point: Near the Visitor Centre, this is one of the first viewpoints for most visitors offering stunning panoramic views of the canyon, with visibility up to 60 miles on a clear day, plus the Colorado River and the Bright Angel Trailhead in the distance.

Bright Angel Point: Close to the Bright Angel Trailhead making it a great starting or ending point for hikers and offering a dramatic view of Bright Angel Canyon and nearby rock formations like the Zoroaster and Vishnu Temples.

Yavapai Point: A broad view of the Colorado River, the Vishnu Temple, and Bright Angel Canyon and features the Yavapai Geology Museum, where visitors can learn about the canyon’s geology while enjoying spectacular vistas.

Desert View: The iconic Desert View Watchtower designed by architect Mary Colter offers a unique perspective from the eastern end of the South Rim with its sweeping views of the canyon, the Painted Desert, and the Colorado River winding through the landscape.

Grandview Point: Known for its breathtakingly colourful and expansive views and access to the Grandview Trail, a historic hiking path, and exceptional access to views of the canyon’s stratified rock layers and Horseshoe Mesa.

Hopi Point: One of the South Rim’s most popular spots for sunset due to its vantage point over the canyon with unobstructed views of the Colorado River and incredible vistas to the west that make this a prime spot for sunset photography.

Mohave Point: Sweeping views of the canyon’s depth and the Colorado River along with dramatic formations and a quieter less crowded alternative to Hopi Point for sunsets.

Pima Point: A quieter and more serene experience with dramatic canyon vistas with some of the best views of the Colorado River including rapids.

Shoshone Point: A secluded and peaceful view of the canyon with picnic facilities that’s reachable via a short hike and is ideal for those looking for a less touristy South Rim experience.

Moran Point: A great spot for appreciating the geological history of the canyon with excellent views of Red Canyon area, the Colorado River, and ‘Great Unconformity’ rock formations.

We had a perfectly sunny and warm day for our visit and for our gentle hike along part of The Rim Trail.

The Rim Trail is approximately 13 miles (20.9 km) from Hermit’s Rest to the South Kaibab Trailhead and is a mix of paved and unpaved sections that offers something for everyone and makes the trail accessible for all ages and skill levels for hikers, casual walkers, and those with mobility aids.

The free shuttle bus system runs parallel to the trail, allowing hikers to customize their journey.

More adventurous options are available too with steeper access points providing challenges for experienced hikers.

The trail offers continuous panoramic views of the Grand Canyon from its numerous designated viewpoints and the ever-changing light on the canyon walls creates spectacular photo opportunities throughout the day.

Along the trail there are lots of pause points at sites like The El Tovar Hotel – a historic lodge that dates back to 1905. The Kolb Studio – a photographic studio and museum showcasing early Grand Canyon photography. And, The Trail of Time – which is a fascinating geological timeline exhibit where visitors can walk through two billion years of Earth’s history.

We set off from the Visitor’s Centre and walked slowly along the trail for about an hour, stopping often along the way, to be amazed at the breath-taking views and to take lots of photos.

At Mather Point, the views over The Grand Canyon looked unreal and the whole experience so surreal and overwhelming that I experienced sensory overload and regularly had to pinch myself to prove I wasn’t dreaming.

You can find out more about how to hike the iconic Rim Trail by studying the destination map HERE.

After spending our allotted time at the Grand Canyon, the backpacking husband and I reached Angel Lodge in time for a drink at the bar before boarding our bus and heading back to Las Vegas.

On the way back, we watched a movie on the TV screen at the front of the bus and then, suddenly feeling exhausted as light faded in the desert along Route 66, we napped until we finally arrived safely back at our hotel in Las Vegas very late that evening.

It had been a very long day but a wonderful day.

It was a big tick off the bucket list for sure and worth every dollar and every minute that we spent that day!

The views at The Grand Canyon were so surreal I had to pinch myself to prove I wasn’t dreamingThe views were so surreal I had to pinch myself to prove I wasn’t dreaming

Seeing and experiencing The Grand Canyon is on most people’s travel wish list and it was certainly on mine.

Visiting The Grand Canyon was a dream come true and I’m so happy we decided to tag an extra couple of days onto our Las Vegas trip to make the excursion possible even if it was only for one day.

MAKING MEMORIES AT THE GRAND CANYON

You can go hiking at a gentle scenic saunter or you can tackle the Rim To Rim Hike.

You can go white water River Rafting on the might Colorado River.

You can also take Mule Trips into the Grand Canyon – creating even more memories by riding your mule deep into the Canyon to stay one or two nights at the historic Phantom Lodge Ranch – only to be reached by mule.

Take a helicopter tour and so much more!

Check out your options with itineraries and prices at Get Your Guide.

What an adventure!

WHERE TO STAY OVER AT THE GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK GRAND CANYON INTERESTING FACTS

The Grand Canyon is one of the natural wonders of the world.

The Grand Canyon is a natural formation with layered bands of red rock.

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 kilometres) long and 6000 feet (1800 metres) deep.

At its widest point the Grand Canyon stretches 18 miles (29 kilometres) across.

Parts of the Grand Canyon are believed to be 70 million years old.

The Grand Canyon creates its own weather.

The weather varies significantly and suddenly from one part of the canyon to another.

There are around 1000 caves in the park but only 335 have been explored.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE GRAND CANYON

The best time for visiting the Grand Canyon is often during the ‘shoulder seasons’ between March to May and from September to November when it’s less crowded.

In the summer (peak season) you can expect the park to be more crowded and local accommodation scarce (therefore do book ahead).

It’s also worth knowing that much of the park remains closed during the winter months (including the North Rim) although the South Rim can usually be visited in the winter and throughout the year.

Indeed, many people think the wintertime and when it’s snowy is the best time to visit the Grand Canyon.

Is The Grand Canyon on your travel bucket list?

Have you already been to The Grand Canyon?

Do tell me about it!?

How To Be Travel Savvy in 2025

HOW TO BE TRAVEL SAVVY IN 2025

The way we travel the world today – whether it’s for business or pleasure – is changing.

Travel freedoms and travel requirements are often in flux due to political whims and international security policies.

The power bestowed upon us via our nationalities and passports is now being ranked competitively as our qualifications for international travel privileges ebb and wane.

In 2025, more and more destination countries are introducing travel apps and pre-approved electronic travel authorisation systems or are planning to adopt new electronic visitor data and QR code entry systems making travel arrangements progressively technical and increasingly complicated.

We have all become accustomed to traveling with our phones to hand – for booking flights and accommodating our boarding passes – but now we need our phones to plan and streamline our journeys.

Learning how to be travel savvy is going to be even more necessary and important in 2025.

As travellers and tourists, as well as carrying our hopes, dreams, contacts, and photos, on our phones and digital devices, we now have to have QR codes and E-Visas and Travel Apps to help guard our personal security and the safekeeping of our belongings.

It feels to me like truly spontaneous international travel might be a thing of the past as travel visas and travel authorisation applications by definition must be submitted ahead of any planned travel.

But don’t let your passion for travel adventures wane because of shifting rules and regulations.

Instead, let me show you How To Be Travel Savvy in 2025!

How To Be Travel Savvy and learn travel savvy ways to navigate your travels in 2025!Savvy ways to navigate your travels in 2025! Electronic Travel Authority

Let’s take a look at how it all started: Australia first introduced their Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) back in 1996.

The United States of America has its ‘Trusted Traveller’ Global Entry Program and its ESTA for Pre-Approved Entry for into or transiting through the USA since 2008.

Read my informative post on how to apply for a Global Entry.

Sri Lanka introduced an ETA system in 2012 but is now apparently looking to simplify with a visa-free option for eligible countries to boost tourism.

Canada’s ETA came into being in 2015 followed by New Zealand’s NZeTA in 2019.

South Korea now has its K-ETA and Japan has it’s E-Visa and is expected to also introduce the JESTA.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO TRAVEL IN 2025

The UK is rolling out a UK ETA Electronic Travel Authorisation in January 2025 to be fully implemented by Spring 2025.

Also in 2025, The European Union have planned that a Entry/Exit System will replace passport stamping and store biometric data and tracking. By mid-2025 the ETIAS European Travel Information and Authorization System will be online.

Thailand has announced it’s expanding e-visa accessibility and introducing the Thai E-Visa ETA for the first quarter of 2025.

And as I write this in January 2025 – in other parts of the world – Belarus, The Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Africa, have now also and recently announced they will be launching ETA systems at some point in 2025.

AFFILIATE NOTICE 202 TRAVEL SAVVY SMART GADGETS

Because our smart phones are used for so many things travel related – boarding passes, electronic travel authorisations, electronic receipts and travel tickets, virtual wallet, and for taking photos and video during our trip – I worry about how I’d manage loss or theft of my phone while I’m travelling.

Our lives and our plans are stored as data on our phones so it’s not hard to imagine the awful trauma of ever losing it.

The answer is, of course, regular travel savvy phone backup.

Except – I don’t know about you – but I always find it challenging to remember to back up my files and photos while I’m on the move and I don’t always have access to my cloud storage while I’m travelling.

Happily, I’ve now completely solved this problem of backups on the move by travelling with my Qubii Duo.

The Qubii Duo is a small cube of smart technology that automatically backs up everything on my phone to a micro-SD Card at the same time that I’m charging my phone. Genius!

TRAVEL SAVVY WEARABLES Basic travel wearables are still relevant today.Basic travel savvy wearables are still relevant today

Long before I discovered high-tech travel gadgets, I was learning how to be travel savvy by keeping my valuables and cash on my person by wearing simple travel accessories, like a secure waist bag or a slim money belt under clothing or a discreet pouch in my underwear to keep cash and cards and a scarf with a hidden pocket to hide my passport.

All of these basic travel savvy wearables are still relevant today.

But now I’m also utilising multifunctional wearables like a smartwatch that’s linked by Bluetooth to my phone for boarding passes, notifications, translations, and with AI-driven travel planners for personalized itineraries.

I also have a digital wallet that uses secure payment options like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and country-specific mobile wallets.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING TRAVEL WEARABLES

FUNCTIONALITY: Ensure the device is practical and comfortable and meets your travel needs.

DISCRETION: Choose for wearables that don’t draw attention to themselves.

BATTERY LIFE: For high-tech wearables prioritise long-lasting or rechargeable options.

Lost luggage has always been an issue and a worry for international travellers but now we have small smart travel devices to attach to our luggage to help track exactly where our luggage is located via Bluetooth or GPS.

But again the basics still apply and being travel savvy with your luggage still means always keeping your belongings secure and in sight especially in crowded places like airports or public transport.

Being travel savvy also means travelling light and avoiding extra baggage fees by checking the dimensions and weight of your bag – I carry a digital weigher – to meet the specific requirements of the airline you’re flying with to your destination.

The Hemingway House Key West

THE HEMINGWAY HOUSE KEY WEST

The Hemingway House Key West Florida was the home of Ernest Hemingway, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954 – “for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated with The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence he has exerted on contemporary style”.

As a writer myself, my visit to The Hemingway House Key West was a highlight of a recent trip to Florida.

The house is impressive and exudes the distinct air of rich ambience and of old-world elegance.

The Hemingway residence in Key West was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968, recognizing its significance in American literature and culture.

Today, The Hemingway House is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Key West, drawing thousands of visitors each year who come to experience its history and literary significance.

The house at Key West was Ernest Hemingway’s primary residence from 1931 to 1939.

During this period, he wrote some of his most famous works, including The Snows of Kilimanjaro and To Have and Have Not.

Hemingway wrote in a detached studio above the carriage house, which has been preserved and still contains his typewriter and desk.

Built in 1851, the house is an excellent example of Spanish Colonial-style architecture, featuring thick limestone walls designed to withstand hurricanes.

A high brick boundary keeps the property private but the view from the first-floor wrap around porch takes in not only the garden but the adjacent street in what is an affluent residential part of town.

I loved walking around the airy rooms of the interior of the Hemingway house and perusing the book-lined hallways, taking in family photographs and the personal effects.

I could almost pretend I was a house guest exploring the place while Ernest and Pauline (Hemingway’s second wife) had just popped out momentarily.

THE HEMINGWAYS IN KEY WEST

The house gives the visitor a real feel for the life the Hemingway’s led in Key West during the 1930’s.

Our tour guide happily gave out lots of insider information about the history of the house, the escapades of the children, the Hemingway marriage, the huge row over the famous swimming pool and the story behind Ernest Hemingway’s ‘last penny’.

Ernest and Pauline HemingwayErnest and Pauline Hemingway HEMINGWAY HOUSE SWIMMING POOL

The story is that Hemingway’s wife, Pauline, had a large saltwater swimming pool installed in the 1930s, a rarity in Key West at the time.

The swimming pool replaced what had been Ernest’s personal boxing ring and was contracted at great expense by Pauline after she found out about her husband’s affair with Martha Gellhorn, his third wife to be.

The pool is 24 feet long and 60 feet wide and is said to have cost $20,000.

In 1938, when Ernest came back from assignment to find out the exorbitant cost of the pool – a significant expense during the Great Depression – and he was reported to have thrown a penny onto the ground in front of Pauline, saying, ‘you’ve spent all but my last penny, so you might as well have that!’

Pauline had the penny set into the path where it lay and it is still there today.

Another extraordinary feature of the house are all cats that reside at the Hemingway House.

These are descendants of a six-toed cat called Snowball and one of Snowball’s kittens (named Snow White) was gifted to Ernest Hemingway by a salvage and shipwreck captain (a respected and official position in those days) called Harold Stanley Dexter.

Ever since, the six-toed polydactyl (six-toed) gene has been passed down through all the generations of cats at the Hemingway house.

All were named after Ernest’s famous friends and the cat in my photo is called Rita Hayworth.

I was so engrossed and enthralled by the house and its history and the life of Hemingway, that the following day we visited the Hemingway exhibit in town.

There were many exhibits and pictures and movie posters reflecting his work but the centrepiece is the bronze sculptor by Terry Jones (2005) which captures a young, enthusiastic and adventurous Hemingway, fishing off his beloved boat ‘Pilar’.

Extracted from a notice I read at The Hemingway exhibit about Hemingway and The Pilar.

By 1934, Ernest Hemingway has grown tired of fishing from bridges, from his friend’s boats or charter boats in the Florida Keys.

It was time for him to invest in his own fishing boat, one that would permit him to travel as far as Cuba and the Bahamas in search of marlin, sailfish, and tuna.

His knowledge of the seas surrounding Key West and The Gulf Stream allowed him to recognise what type of boat he wanted, built to his exacting specifications.

On a return trip from Africa, Hemingway stopped in New York for a meeting with his editor at Esquire Magazine.

His editor advanced him $3000 for future stories about his trip. Armed with his Esquire check, Hemingway climbed into a taxi with Pauline and set out for the Wheeler Shipyard in Brooklyn.

The check was promptly used as a down payment on the customised boat of his dreams.

He soon became an avid sports fisherman and in 1938 he established a world record for catching seven Marlin in one day.

Ernest Hemingway’s first visit to Key West in 1928 was only meant to a short stopover, but once he’d felt the sun on his face, inhaled the salty air and met the locals, he knew it would be his home with second wife Pauline.

He also garnered a reputation for hard drinking with his new friends Josie ‘Sloppy Joe’ Russell, fisherman Eddie ‘Bra’ Saunders and his brother ‘Burge’ and later Toby Bruce who became his right-hand man and life-long companion.

Hemingway soon developed a love of fishing off Key WestHemingway soon developed a love of fishing off Key West

Extracted from a notice I read at The Hemingway exhibit about Hemingway and his friends.

Hemingway’s love of fishing led him to meet several Key West residents, particularly Charlie Thompson, whose family owned Thompson Marine Hardware Store and other businesses.

The two men met soon after Hemingway arrived in the island in 1928, becoming fast friends and maintaining a relationship until the author’s death in 1961.

Thompson introduced the writer to a number of other like-minded locals including the fishing guide ‘Bra’ Saunders, his half brother Berge, Joe Russell (owner of a small ‘speak-easy’ eventually called Sloppy Joe’s, one of the models for Harry Morgan in To Have and To Have Not and an avid fisherman with a boat names Anita). James B. ‘Sully’ Sullivan and the lawyer George Brooks (Bee-lips in To Have and To Have Not).

All of these people, including Pauline Hemingway, fished in local waters on Charles’s or Bra’s boats.

Over the period of his Key West years (1928- 1939) Hemingway invited some relatives and several earlier friends including Henry ‘Mike’ Starter, Waldo Peirce, Bill Smith, Joh Herrmann, his editor Maxwell Perkins, the poet Archibald MacLeish and his wife Ada and John Dos Passos.

All made the journey south where they met and fished with Hemingway’s new friends and stayed at the inexpensive Oversea Hotel on Fleming Street.

The author referred to the group from the north as The Mob, giving each a nickname, and before too long he began referring to himself as Papa.

I loved finding out about one of my writer heroes and adored Key West and I’m told that some visitors and staff have reported seeing Hemingway’s ghost wandering the halls, adding an air of mystery to the property!

Museum is open everyday. 9:00am-5:00pm for walk-in visits.

There is so much to see and to explore and there’s lots to do in Key West.

The food is fabulous and the restaurants plentiful.

In the Hemingway tradition, bars are a fun feature too and Sloppy Joe’s Bar is still there and there’s also the first and original of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville.

We’d taken a Greyhound Bus from Miami and stopped off in Key Largo for a couple of nights before heading across the Keys and the famous bridges down to Key West, again by Greyhound Bus. It was fantastic!

Miami to Key West – by Greyhound Bus!

Miami to Key West on US Highway One by Greyhound Bus!

I want to share with you one of our most exciting road trips to date.

It’s one of the great All-American Road Trips in fact – the one hundred and sixty-five-mile iconic road trip from Miami to Key West – on Overseas Highway also known as US Highway One.

We’d arrived in Florida USA on the last weekend in May not realising it was Memorial Weekend.

That’s crazy – I know – when it’s one of the biggest and busiest holidays of the year in The USA.

But, in our defence, we had been travelling in Central America and The Caribbean and so off-grid for while.

We landed in Miami from Roatan Honduras feeling a bit of culture shock about being back in the first world.

In Miami, the weather was hot and the atmosphere was crazy as we joined the jostling crowds walking on the pedestrianised and cordoned-off on Ocean Drive, to slowly explore the famous beach and the colourful Art-Deco area on that extremely busy holiday weekend.

It made sense for us to head out of town during Memorial Weekend and so we decided to take a road trip – one we’d always aspired to do one day – and that was to travel down to The Florida Keys.

All the way to Key West and to the southernmost point of the USA on Highway One.

It seemed to us that The Florida Keys would be the perfect destination to get away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist hotspots of Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach and the Space Coast.

We knew The Keys were connected by bridges and causeways and so I did a bit of research online to discover that there are actually forty-two bridges connecting these islands.

The longest is of course the famous Seven-Mile Bridge.

The shortest is Harris Gap which is only thirty-seven feet long.

And, each island that makes up the Florida Keys offers unique features and the first one you encounter is Key Largo, which promises some of the best diving, snorkelling, fishing and boating experiences in the Keys.

As the backpacking husband is a very keen scuba diver, we decided to stay over for a couple of nights on Key Largo, to allow for some diving and sightseeing and to experience some laid-back island nightlife before continuing on to Key West.

Miami to Key West - by Greyhound Bus. All the way to Key West and to the southernmost point of the USA on Highway OneAll the way to Key West and to the southernmost point of the USA on Highway One NOT Driving A Red Mustang!

We had actually thought about renting a classic red Mustang convertible for our classic road trip.

I’d imagined us driving over the famous bridges in style with the sun on our faces and the wind in our hair.

But, once we’d seen the sheer amount of traffic coming in and out of Miami, we started to reconsider our options.

And we decided to leave the driving to Key West to someone else.

Instead of renting a Mustang, we decided to travel Miami to Key West by Greyhound Bus.

What could be more iconic than a Greyhound bus in the USA?

We decided to travel Miami to Key West by Greyhound Bus. What could be more iconic than a Greyhound bus in the USA? Taking The Greyhound Bus Instead!

We saw it as a great adventure and found out about Greyhound Bus routes and schedules and bus stops and how to buy tickets online.

The Greyhound Buses are comfortable, clean, and well equipped and for your convenience and comfort, they have planned rest stops along the route, so you can stretch your legs and also pick up some refreshments along the way.

It’s a great way to travel!

We took the Greyhound bus from Miami to Key Largo – which only took a couple of hours – and was a very pleasant and interesting ride through the everglades on Highway One.

Our driver advised us to keep a sharp lookout for alligators along each side of the road where it was a mangrove swamp and, although I did so, to my disappointment I didn’t actually see one.

AFFILIATE NOTICE 202 Key Largo We took the Greyhound bus from Miami to Key Largo and it was an interesting ride through the everglades on Highway One.We took the Greyhound bus from Miami to Key Largo

We stayed two nights on Key Largo and we had a wonderful time.

We stayed at The Holiday Inn Key Largo, which is right next to the marina, and from our room’s balcony we had a wonderful view of the marina and canals and boats.

At The Holiday Inn, we were also mere steps away from the dock, where the tourist attraction and original – but renovated – steamboat ‘The African Queen’ that had starred in the movie with Bogart and Hepburn, in 1951.

After having a wonderful time in Key Largo, we set off on the second leg of our road trip that would take us all the way to Key West, and we met with the Greyhound Bus at a stop just across the street from our hotel.

I was delighted to snag front seats, so that we had an uninterrupted view of the road ahead of us and all the famous bridges, through the bus’s large clear windscreen.

Unexpectedly, one of the very best things about travelling to Miami to Key West by Greyhound Bus was meeting all the people riding on the bus.

There were about a dozen other people heading down to Key West.

Sitting near to us were two older ladies and behind them other couples of various ages.

Across from us, a young man, travelling solo.

We all got introduced and we got chatting about where we were all from – and I suppose as the only two Scottish people on the bus we were something of a novelty – as everyone else was from different places in the USA.

Everyone was incredibly friendly and interesting and the atmosphere onboard was chatty and lively – almost party like – as we shared our travel stories and all the drinks and snacks we’d all brought on board.

From Key Largo, Islamorada is the next Key in this chain and is in fact a village of islands and canals and offers some of the best sports fishing.

Then it’s Marathon Key which is also an island chain of over a dozen connected islands stretching over a distance of 10 miles.

There is a feeling of total awe as you cross the Seven Mile Bridge – it feels like you are flying over the ocean with azure blue waters on either side of you – and we had a great view from those front seats on the bus.

On the Lower Keys, which have lovely names like Big Pine Key, Little Duck Key, Ohio Key and Sunshine Key, Summerland Key, Big Torch and Little Torch Keys, Cudjoe Key, Sugarloaf Key, Big Coppitt Key, Stock Island and the uninhabited Saddlebunch Keys.

Front seat views on the Greyhound bus over the Seven Mile Bridge!Front seat views on the Greyhound bus over the Seven Mile Bridge! The Rest Stop STORY

I love to retell this story! On our Greyhound Bus road trip we paused our journey at a roadside burger place and rest stop.

It was lunchtime and a welcome opportunity to grab a bite to eat and to freshen up and also to restock on supplies of drinks and snacks for the remaining part of the trip.

And, by this time, everyone on the bus had become really good friends.

Two older women passengers had already told us they liked to collect discount coupons (a very serious thing in the USA).

And, to our amazement, they insisted on handing out discount coupons to all of us as we climbed off the bus at the rest stop.

The coupons entitled each one of us to a burger and fries and ice cream and a drink – all for $5.

I don’t think those serving at the burger place that day had ever sold so much for so little as we all handed over our discount coupons!

On The Greyhound Bus

Then, a little later and back on the Greyhound bus, I started up a conversation with the young man travelling alone.

He told me he was a musician from N’ Awlins.

I explained to him that I’d never been to New Orleans but, as a writer, I was planning to go there soon to do some research for a novel I was writing partly set in New Orleans and that I’d always wanted to go and had a kind of fascination for it.

I asked for his recommendations on what to do and see there and he generously shared with me his top tips for The Big Easy.

I hastily jotted down his suggested first-timers itinerary in my notebook.

He told me lots of the best places to go for food and southern culture including experiencing a traditional ‘crawfish boil’.

He told us about all the bars to drink at and the music scene to look for – and not to balk at paying the cover fees to enter music venues on Frenchman’s Street – as that was the very best way to hear the best in jazz and blues for which ‘N’awlins is famous.

And, unbeknown to me at that time, the list of places and the generous recommendations he had shared that day would go on to become our itinerary for a fabulous never to be forgotten adventure in New Orleans just one week later when we would fly there directly from Key West.

And, who knew – when we’d stepped onto that bus – that a fateful meeting with a stranger would shape our future travel plans?

You can read about our amazing time in New Orleans in a post I’ve written entitled An Insiders Guide To New Orleans and also New Orleans – Haunted Secrets of the French Quarter.

Ernest Hemingway was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Writing Fiction in 1953 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954 “for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated with The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence he has exerted on contemporary style”.

I was also particularly keen to tour the Hemingway House.

Ernest Hemingway’s first visit to Key West in 1928 was only meant to be a short stopover, but it is said that once he’d felt the sun on his face, inhaled the salty air and met the locals, he knew it would be his home with his second wife Pauline.

The Hemingway House is impressive and has the distinct air and rich ambience of old-world elegance.

A high brick boundary keeps the property private but the view from the first-floor wrap-around porch takes in not only the garden but the adjacent street in what is an affluent residential part of town.

I loved walking around the airy rooms and the book-lined hallways, taking in all the family photographs and the personal effects.

I could almost pretend I was a house guest exploring the place while Ernest and Pauline (Hemingway’s second wife) had just popped out momentarily.

You can read a more detailed post about my visit to the Hemingway House here: The Hemingway House – Key West.

While living in Key West, Hemingway became an avid sports fisherman.

In 1938 he established a world record for catching seven Marlin in one day.

He also garnered a reputation for hard drinking with his new friends Josie ‘Sloppy Joe’ Russell, fisherman Eddie ‘Bra’ Saunders and his brother ‘Burge’ and later Toby Bruce who became his right-hand man and life-long companion.

There is so much to do throughout the Florida Keys and Key West absolutely lived up to my high expectations.

It’s so clean and so pretty, almost like a Disney town in its perfection.

It’s historic (by American standards) and its buildings and wooden clapboard houses with wrap-around porches and white picket fences give the place a surreal look and Hemingway’s house is a prime example.

I loved finding out about one of my writer heroes.

Plus, the food is fabulous and the restaurants are plentiful.

Duval Street is eye-popping in that there is so much to see and this is where I would urge you to look both left and right in case you miss something. Art galleries. Museums. Fabulous restaurants. Bars. Souvenir shops.

Key West is almost a theme park in all that it offers so if you ever do find yourself in Florida, I would urge you to head out of Miami on Highway One – perhaps on a Greyhound bus – to explore the fabulous Florida Keys and Key West!

Tell me, are the Keys on your Florida wish list?

Or have you experienced Key West?

If so, how did you get there?
