Character studies: Male Depression_The Surprising Truth About Men and Depression By Elise Solé, Shine Staff | Healthy Living
http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/the-surprising-truth-about-men-and-depression--165535021.html
ThinkStockFact: Women are diagnosed with depression at twice the rate that men are. But a surprising study of 5,692 people that was published this week in the medical journal JAMA Psychiatry shows that men actually suffer from depression nearly as often as women do. So how have doctors and therapists been missing the signs?
“The term ‘depression,’ conjures images of a sad, teary person who stays in bed all day, unable to eat or otherwise function — these traditional symptoms are what we’ve used to diagnose depression,” Lisa Martin, PhD, an assistant professor of women's and gender studies and health policy studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, told Yahoo Shine. “However, since men are socialized to toughen up and be stoic during hard times, when a man becomes depressed, we wouldn't necessarily know it.”
Past research has identified distinct characteristics of male depression (aggression, anger, and other destructive behaviors, for example). So when Martin and her team analyzed depression symptoms common among men, they found that 26 percent of men and 22 percent of women met the criteria for depression. “This wasn’t surprising because depressed women don’t typically walk around throwing things or exhibiting other types of aggressive behavior,” said Martin. However, when she used a scale that included both traditional symptoms and those male-specific symptoms, the rates for depression were similar among men and women: 31 percent and 33 percent, respectively.
“The results are significant because now, clinicians can spot more symptoms in men struggling with this illness,” said Martin. So what signs should women look for that might indicate the men in their lives are depressed?
Hyperactivity: Having difficulty sitting still and focusing on one task, or being fidgety or jumpy.
Aggression: Overreacting to minor annoyances and experiencing sudden spells of anger and/or violence with his physical features mirroring panic attacks (sweaty, difficulty breathing, chest pain, a loss of control, and more).
Over-extension: Has he taken on an unrealistic workload? Is he voluntarily working late hours? He could be that he's trying to blunt his emotions by staying busy.
Risky behavior: Gambling, smoking, excessive drinking or any other type of risk-taking behavior.
“It’s important to note that not all men who exhibit these symptoms are depressed. After all, some of this is normal male behavior,” Martin explained. “However, if a man who has never behaved like this suddenly shifts his behavior, it’s worth exploring whether he could be depressed. He may not realize it himself or know how to seek help.” What’s more, there are plenty of depressed men who display traditional signs of depression. According to Martin, “The new data just helps us understand more symptoms of male depression."
But should you be concerned if your partner has always been a high-energy, risk-taking dude who works hard? “It’s tricky because he may also be experiencing chronic, undiagnosed depression," said Martin. "You may suggest that he visit a clinician or therapist."

Marcus Books, the longest running Black-owned bookstore in the country NEEDS HELP.
Interested in Black literature, books, and voice? An email alert I received: Hi Ms. Sourna,
You have a great site and wonderful books! I'm writing to provide some info for Marcus Books, a bookstore that's become a cornerstone to the Black community as it highlights its culture.
We are pushing to keep this open so it can continue to support local schools, reading programs and cultural events.
This is the longest running Black-owned bookstore in the country with youth and community programs.
A couple months ago the building that the bookstore shares was behind in payments.
Speculators wanting the building somehow subverted the bookstore's delayed payment, although an associate of Marcus Books is supplying funds to purchase the building back.
Here's a site http://SupportMarcusBooks.com for updates.
This is a bookstore people have flocked to for 53 years. Previous speakers include Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Amiri Baraka, Iyanla Vanzant, Rosa Parks and Barbara Lee among many others.
The store needs for this information to be shared with those in the community who enjoy Black literature and authors.
For more information and to support, you can also call 415-335-7033 and email sanfrancisco@acce.org, too. Could you forward this info to your readers and associates?

Heracleion Photos: Lost Egyptian City Revealed After 1,200 Years Under Sea [June 4, 2013]
So many stories and character can come from this. From today and yesterday and in between. For my nephew the Egyptologist.
http://seriouslyforreal.com/seriously-for-real/heracleion-photos-lost-egyptian-city-revealed-after-1200-years-under-sea/
It is a city shrouded in myth, swallowed by the Mediterranean Sea and buried in sand and mud for more than 1,200 years. But now archeologists are unearthing the mysteries of Heracleion, uncovering amazingly well-preserved artifacts that tell the story of a vibrant classical-era port.
Known as Heracleion to the ancient Greeks and Thonis to the ancient Eygptians, the city was rediscovered in 2000 by French underwater archaeologist Dr. Franck Goddio and a team from the European Institute for Underwater Acheology (IEASM) after a four-year geophysical survey. The ruins of the lost city were found 30 feet under the surface of the Mediterranean Sea in Aboukir Bay, near Alexandria.
A new documentary highlights the major discoveries that have been unearthed at Thonis-Heracleion during a 13-year excavation. Exciting archeological finds help describe an ancient city that was not only a vital international trade hub but possibly an important religious center. The television crew used archeological survey data to construct a computer model of the city .
According to the Telegraph, leading research now suggests that Thonis-Heracleion served as a mandatory port of entry for trade between the Mediterranean and the Nile.
So far, 64 ancient shipwrecks and more than 700 anchors have been unearthed from the mud of the bay, the news outlet notes. Other findings include gold coins, weights from Athens (which have never before been found at an Egyptian site) and giant tablets inscribed in ancient Greek and ancient Egyptian. Researchers think that these artifacts point to the city’s prominence as a bustling trade hub.
Researchers have also uncovered a variety of religious artifacts in the sunken city, including 16-foot stone sculptures thought to have adorned the city’s central temple and limestone sarcophagi that are believed to have contained mummified animals.
Experts have marveled at the variety of artifacts found and have been equally impressed by how well preserved they are.
“The archaeological evidence is simply overwhelming,” Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe, a University of Oxford archeologist taking part in the excavation, said in a press release obtained by The Huffington Post. “By lying untouched and protected by sand on the sea floor for centuries they are brilliantly preserved.”
A panel of experts presented their findings at an Oxford University conference on the Thonis-Heracleion excavation earlier this year.
But despite all the excitement over the excavation, one mystery about Thonis-Heracleion remains largely unsolved: Why exactly did it sink? Goddio’s team suggests the weight of large buildings on the region’s water-logged clay and sand soil may have caused the city to sink in the wake of an earthquake.

From BigThink.com_Why Women Should Write Screenplays by Andrea Chalupa June 27, 2013
This week, Business Insider wrote about a study reporting the sad news that women are just not selling screenplays at the rate of men. In fact, they’re grossly being left out of misogynistic Hollywood:
According to Suzana Orozco’s analysis of recent sales of spec scripts — scripts written with no deal in place (hence speculative) — women make up a smaller percentage of those sales than any time in the last two decades.
While the spec script market as a whole has cooled from its heyday of the mid-1990s, the impact on female writers has been even more severe.
Between 1991 and 2000, women accounted for 14 percent of spec script sales. The numbers remained high in 2001, 2002 and 2003 as women sold more than 20 spec scripts each year.
Since then the bottom has fallen out (see the chart below). Only three times — 2004, 2007 and 2009 — have female scribes sold more than 10 percent of specs. Female writers sold the same number of scripts in 2001 as they did in 2011 and 2012 combined.
Between 2010 and 2012, the last three full years this has been measured, scripts written by women constituted just 9 percent of sales. [Emphasis mine.]Why so low? The usual suspects (pun intended) have been blamed: women like to write romantic comedies—a genre that isn’t in high demand in a Hollywood ruled by epic futuristic apocalyptic space action adventures.
And there’s also the problem that, in Hollywood, the prevailing dogma is that it takes a famous actor, not a famous actress, to get a movie funded. So it’s largely assumed that women screenwriters want to write about women protagonists—and who’s going to want that script? It’s difficult to fund. Actresses don’t sell movies. (Ironically, Calli Khouri’s Academy Award-winning screenplay for Thelma & Louise is held up in screenwriting classes as the gold standard.)
A few years ago, I took on the quixotic journey of writing a screenplay. I was motivated to do so because the story—a Soviet thriller—was inspired by my beloved grandfather’s memoir and the stories he used to tell me about surviving Stalin’s famine in Ukraine that starved to death millions. So I was on a mission.
Eventually, after years of hard work and rejection, my script was finally optioned—“rented” for a few years—to an Academy Award-winning production company.
Along the way, I met other women who wrote screenplays. Tellingly, none of them wrote romantic comedies.
They were writing historical dramas driven by complicated male protagonists, gruesome horror stories, dark comedies staring serial killers, and stoner comedies. In fact, I also met quite a few macho straight men who were passionate about writing romantic comedies.
The point is that it’s not the subject matter that’s keeping women screenwriters out of the Hollywood system. Not at all. Anyone who believes that is ignorant.
The study also said that “women have better luck selling books and TV shows than film spec scripts,” according to Business Insider. Why is that? For years women have had role models to look up to in literature and television: from Jane Austen to Marcy Carsey (Roseanne; That 70s Show) to Marcy Kauffman (Friends; Dream On) and Tina Fey.
There are certainly famous women screenwriters working today; Diablo Codey and Brit Marling come to mind. But they're the minority, according to this latest research.
For those aspiring to break into an industry it makes a big difference if you can see “your kind” already achieving great things in that industry. It’s classic identity formation psychology. When we see others like us—in my case, other female screenwriters—succeeding, then it seems more likely that I can navigate and succeed in that industry.
Unfortunately, I was writing a historical thriller—a genre dominated by old white men, often old British white men. This only fueled my conviction that I had to succeed with my script. My project became not only driven by my love for my late grandfather, but also my desire to help other women.
My education of becoming a screenwriter consisted of reading countless scripts. The vast majority were written by white men. When I studied to become a journalist and a book writer, I had a far more diverse education. Isn’t it time that women and people of color sold some scripts? And isn't it time that producers around the world helped them?

Joy of Cooking , often known as "The Joy of Cooking", is one of the United States' most-published cookbooks, and has been in print continuously since 1936 and with more than 18 million copies sold. It was privately published in 1931 by Irma S. Rombauer, a homemaker in St. Louis, Missouri, who was struggling emotionally and financially after her husband's suicide the previous year.
Rombauer had 3,000 copies printed by A.C. Clayton, a company which had printed labels for fancy St. Louis shoe companies and for Listerine, but never a book. In 1936, the book was picked up by a commercial printing house, the Bobbs-Merrill Company. Joy is the backbone of many home cooks' libraries and is commonly found in commercial kitchens as well.
