TUESDAY TALES - WORD PROMPT - "FUTURE"

Welcome and thanks for coming! Here's a snippet for my WIP, OUT OF MY DREAMS, INTO MY HEART. Yes, it's Penny and Mark again but some time later. Here is a possible cover I designed for the prequel. What do you think?
Now the story:  “Be good, squirt.” Mark hung up the phone. Even as a grown man, he missed his twin sister, Meg, especially now that he was in love. He tried not to fall in love with Penny but it was too late. He was in deep and couldn’t stop thinking about her. Even in practice, he was charged up, performing better than ever on the field, giving Darvin Sweetwater, reigning quarterback, a run for his money. The coaches were looking at him differently too. All because of Penny. Penny’s my lucky charm.
Penny never had a stable home. She was raised by her aunt, her mother was dead and her father was a drunk. She needed a man she could count on. As much as he wanted to be, Mark wasn’t that man. He had responsibilities.
Ever since his father took a powder when Mark was fifteen, he had become the man of the family. He was in his first year with the Nevada Gamblers. Three hundred grand sounds like a lot of money but it didn’t seem to go far enough. Mark was supporting himself, his sister, paying off college loans for both of them and would soon be paying Megan’s Harvard MBA costs as well as saving a little in case he got injured. The icing on the cake was the money he sent home to his mother every month.
His brow furrowed as he peered in the mirror, trying to tie his tie. Damn! Where’s Megan? She does this for me.  Penny was waiting for him in the parking lot after the game.  She’s gorgeous.     The warmth of her kiss and embrace made his spirits soar. I want to give her everything. Mark knew he had to tell her.
“Penny, you know I’d like to commit, but…”
“You said ‘no commitment’ and I got it.”
“My future is very uncertain. If things were different…”
“I’m going to New York.”    “What?”

“My role on the show is over and I’ve saved enough to enroll for a year at F.I.T. I’ve always wanted to design children’s clothing."
 “You’re leaving?”
“We can write, text, call…I never expected you to take care of me.”
“I want to, Penny, God, I want to. But I have…”
“I know. Responsibilities.” She leaned over and kissed him. “I’ll miss you. But it’s time.”
He stared at her as a lump grew in this throat. His eyes watered but he controlled his emotions. Big guys don’t cry. Penny turned away but not before he saw a tear on her cheek. Mark reached over and wiped it away with his thumb. CLICK HERE TO RETURN TO TUESDAY TALESCLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT MY WEBSITE

WOUNDED WARRIORS BLOG HOP!

Christmas and Hanukkah are times for giving. I am pledging one dollar to Wounded Warriors for each comment up to $100. Come on, let's get the comments rolling so we can raise money to help those who have given up so much in service to their country.
You can also win a free book. Scroll down for details.

PTSD is an issue confronted in two of my books. Here are two excerpts pertaining to that lingering side effect of service.
I'll give a copy of either of my two military romances to five lucky commenters chosen at random, their choice. So leave your email address on your comment.

The first is NOW AND FOREVER, THE BOOK OF DANNY.
After three years, Captain Danny Maine reconnected with Callie Richards, his dead brother's fiancee.   Callie was the sister he never had. This is their conversation:
“Why the military? After Kyle’s death…” Callie asked.
“I had a plan…a mission. I went there to kill the people who killed Kyle.”
“How could you know…?”
“All the snipers, suicide bombers, terrorists…they all killed him,” Danny said, clenching his fist.
“Did you get them?” she asked him, gently, putting her hand on his shoulder.
“You’re damn right I did. I killed them all…those bastards. Every time we went on patrol and came across the enemy, I was the first one there with my rifle. I’m a crack shot, a sniper, a detonator, an executioner. I shot them, I blew them up. I splattered their blood all over the Middle East,” he said, heatedly, his face growing red and a vein in his arm bulging as his fist closed tighter.

Callie saw the pain and fury on Danny’s face. She hardly recognized the new Danny. Where was the intellectual scholar Callie knew? An enraged, vengeful man faced her, clearly injured on the inside. Her friend never found respite from the pain of losing Kyle. Callie placed gentle hands on Danny’s shoulders.
“Only you could understand,” he said as he put his arms around her, laid his head on hers and wept uncontrollably. Callie held him, hugging him to her, as if she could squeeze the rage out of his body.

Now a snippet from the second military romance, written with retired Marine, Ben Tanner, called LOVE LOST AND FOUND.
Sgt. Mick Peterson is on a date with Tara. Walking in the moonlight, he starts explaining what his medals are for. Then he opens up about this horrifying experience: awards and decorations. Ben wrote this scene and it always moves me to tears.
"Won’t bore you with details on all of them, only a few. This first one, the Blue/white/red/white/blue one is The Silver Star. I received it in Fallujah. We were clearing houses of insurgents and terror suspects when we were ambushed at a two-story house along the primary north-south road in Fallujah.”
He paused for a ragged breath, almost a sigh. Tara rested her hand on his forearm for a moment.
“I dropped back into the courtyard, with gunfire spraying out of the house and from across the street. I was struck in the hip by shrapnel from two grenades that had been rolled through the front door.
My squad moved away from the courtyard, headed for the street. They continued firing on the house, I was the last to emerge. That's when my leg gave out on me, and I dropped. I huddled into a position alongside three wounded comrades in the middle of the road as multiple rounds flew all around us”
His eyes watered as he paused before continuing. She tightened her grip.
“I kept firing my weapon, just shooting, waiting to get hit. I'd pretty much figured it was all over. I kept firing but I didn't think I’d make it. When my ammunition was exhausted, I grabbed magazines from the wounded and managed to protect the position until another Bradley fighting vehicle arrived on the scene. I helped load the most seriously injured soldiers before letting them take me.”
He moved away from her, put his face in his hands…tears flowing freely, and said, almost inaudibly, “Crawford, Matthis, Chambers, and Blake…all…gone.”
She moved to him, opening her arms, gathering him in. He rested his head on hers, closing his arms around her shoulders. They stood together in silence. The breeze picked up, cooling the air, and the rustling of the palm leaves covered the sound of his soft shuddering sigh.

Welcome, Lindsay Downs!

Today I'm pleased to have Lindsay Downs as a guest. I'm a fan and looking forward to hearing about his new book. I've got the coffee right here, Lindsay, and the croissants are over there. Please help yourself. I just adore your cover! Now let's hear about the book.        Thank you for having me guest on your blog today so I can talk about my upcoming release, Love and War-A Trilogy of Wartime Romances. Between 2006 and 2008 I wrote these stories, two set in WWII while the last in 1968 Vietnam.      Over the next few years I tried to sell them individually but didn’t get any takers, so they have languished on my computer. When I heard Secret Cravings Publisher was looking for military romance I knew they’d found a home. The book, in eBook format, is scheduled for release within the next few weeks. To find out when it’s available check my Facebook wall and a few of the groups I’m part of. A Bit About the Book:
Simone - Returning to Occupied France in advance of the allied invasion leaves no time for love between Sergeant Brian Deveneau and Simone. War tears apart lives and love. Will they survive?Rescued - Injured Ensign Steve Henry awakens from severe wounds to the tender care of Lieutenant Suzanne Cunningham. Attraction explodes between them but will war tear them apart in the end?Angel in Green - Never expecting to find love, 1st Lieutenant Elena Roberts must put aside her feelings for 2nd Lieutenant Steve Johnson. When her hospital is overrun by North Vietnamese soldier's, she must guard not only her heart from the handsome solider, but keep him alive as well.

***************** From Dec 7 to 8 I will be taking part in a blog hop to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Following the event I will be giving a copy, Kindle, Nook or PDF, to one lucky commenter.

TUESDAY TALES, WORD PROMPT SILENT

This is a continuation of last week's story, the WIP prequel to IF I LOVED YOU. This week it has acquired a name! OUT OF MY DREAMS AND INTO MY HEART. Penny and Mark are still at dinner with Darvin and Tiffany. Things are heating up between Mark and Darvin.

“When I want your opinion, I’ll give it to you,” Darvin spit back.“In a test of wits, Sweets, you come up empty…so, bring it on.” Mark silently thanked his twin sister, Megan, for tutoring him in college, forcing him to learn. “I’ll wipe the floor with you, Davis,” Sweetwater growled.“Not if it’s a game of intelligence.”“Come on, baby. Don’t get upset. Let’s get outta here, Darvin. Why don’t you come to my place for…uh…dessert?”  Tiffany cooed, placing her hands around Darvin’s huge biceps.Darvin looked at Tiffany, then at Penny.“You want to come along and make it a threesome?” He licked his lips as his gaze raked over Penny’s body.“Uh…not really.  Not my thing. Don’t worry about me. I’ll grab a cab home,” Penny said.“I can drive you home,” Mark piped up.“It’s okay. Really.” Mark detected a nervous tone in her voice and he cursed silently. Shit. She thinks I’m gonna jump her in the car. Attack her like Darvin would. I’m nothing like him. Darvin narrowed his eyes and a slow, evil grin played at his lips. “Fine, Penny, if that’s what you want. Leave Davis here by himself. Let’s go, Tiffany.” Darvin stood up, reached into his back pocket and pulled out his wallet. He dropped two hundred dollar bills on the table then handed a twenty to Penny.   “Here’s for your cab. You’re one hot chick.” Darvin and Tiffany stood up together. “I’ll see you on the playing field, Davis. Better watch your back…bro.” Sweetwater laughed as he and Tiffany left the restaurant.Penny twirled the twenty dollar bill in her hand. Her gaze dropped to her hands then up to her water glass. She folded, unfolded and refolded the bill.Oh my God. She’s afraid of me.  “Hey, look. Do whatever makes you comfortable,” Mark said, resting his hand on hers lightly for only a moment. She jumped, fear evident in her eyes. “I’m not going to hurt you, try to take advantage of you…anything. I’m a regular guy. I’ve got a twin sister. I like women, respect ‘em.”Penny continued to twist the twenty in her hands. “I’d better go.” “If that’s what you want. But I’m going to have another cup of coffee and I was considering dessert.”Penny turned frightened eyes on him as she began to stand up.Make her feel safe, you idiot!“No, no, I mean real dessert. I hear they have great hot fudge here. How about splitting a hot fudge sundae with me? Three scoops – all your choice. Or you can catch a taxi if that makes you feel safer.”Penny sat down and blew out a breath. “I love hot fudge. How did you know?”“Everybody loves hot fudge, especially me.” He smiled at her and signaled to the waitress who came over right away. She rattled off six flavors of ice cream.“You choose,” Mark said, gesturing to her with his hand. “I like ‘em all.”“Hmm, let’s see. Mint chip for sure, vanilla and how about coffee?” She turned to look at Mark.“Sounds good to me. Whipped cream and two cherries, please.”

FRIDAY FIVE FAST FACTS ABOUT CHRISTMAS!

Five fast facts about Christmas. I know it's early but before you're bombarded with holiday stuff, check these out and a first chapter today on First Chapter Friday. First, the facts:

1. The first commercial Christmas card was produced and sold in London in 1843.
 2. The song "Jingle Bells" was copyrighted in 1857.
3. The practice of Christmas gift giving was once banned by the Catholic Church.  It was suspected that this tradition had roots in Paganism.
4. There are two towns in the United States with the name of Santa Claus but only one named North Pole.  They are located in Georgia, Indiana and Alaska.
5. Americans send about 1.5 billion Christmas cards each year.

First, a few words people are saying about THE DATING LIST:
"Smart, witty, sexy and fun. This novel has it all...The playful love between the characters made me wistful. Plenty of steamy scenes and a well written story. Her characters have depth and I enjoy the series. I love having my favorite characters from the other books take part in this one. It's like revisiting old friends."
"I read all three books in the "list" series and really enjoyed them! I was looking forward to The Dating List to see how the series got wrapped up and Jean Joachim did not disappoint. I especially liked that this story had some unexpected twists to it! A great read."

TUESDAY TALES - PROMPT "WINE"

This is the beginning of the prequel to my new series, Hollywood Hearts, releasing in January. A little longer than my usual posts, I apologize but I couldn't stop!

“I’d better get laid tonight, Reid,” Darvin Sweetwater, star quarterback for the Nevada Gamblers called to his teammate, Tom Reid.“Joanna said these two are hot,” Reid called, drying himself with a towel.
"Come on, Davis," Darvin pulled newbie second-string QB, Mark Davis, by the arm. Before they pushed through the locker room door, Sweetwater said, “I’m expecting some sweet lip action tonight. Woo hoo!” He crowed. “You take the one with the big rack. Usually I’d take her. I love big racks, but the other one is an actress on that show, Murphy Lane. I’ve been jacking to her for the past month and tonight’s gonna be the real thing. After she does me, I’m gonna fuck her nice and slow.”Mark had a crush on Penny Thrasher, a beautiful young woman in a supporting role on the program. Couldn’t be her. Her part’s too small. He wondered if Darvin's crude attitude would turn the women off.“You go first, Davis. I hate blind dates.”Darvin gave Mark a little shove and he entered the parking lot slightly ahead of his teammate. Two women moved toward them. Holy Shit! It is Penny Thrasher! Mark gulped, his mouth suddenly as dry as the desert surrounding them.“Hi, honey, I’m Tiffany  Barker.” The woman with the big rack pushed ahead of Penny and extended a hand with huge, fancy nails. He’d never been into super-sized breasts, preferring something he could get a hold of with only one hand, but her chest was so huge, he couldn’t take his eyes off it. Her eyelashes looked to be two inches long. Her rack, red lipstick and white-blonde hair made her appear vulgar, cheap to him. Mark took her hand and shook it gently.  “Are you Sweetwater?” She asked in a sharp voice.“Just the second string, Mark Davis.” Tiffany’s eyes spied Sweetwater not far behind Mark and they lit up. When she made a beeline for Darvin, Mark turned to face Penny. A slender young woman with ample, but much smaller breasts than Tiffany, she wore almost no makeup and looked so beautiful, Mark couldn’t speak. She flashed him a broad smile, her blue eyes clear, lashes all her own and a soft coral lipstick on her lips stopped him cold. She extended her hand. “Penny Thrasher.”“I know who you are. I’m a big fan,” he gushed. Shut up, Davis! Don’t you hate when people say that to you?She blushed and cast her gaze to the ground. A humble hottie actress. Imagine that.Darvin Sweetwater shoved Mark aside and introduced himself to both ladies. They divided up into two cars, Mark and Tiffany in one and Darvin and Penny in another. Tiffany made her annoyance at ending up with Mark obvious. But if she was hoping he’d be upset, she was wrong. He immediately knew he had no interest in Tiffany. But Penny was another story. The only thought bothering him was Sweetwater’s plan to seduce her before the night was over.
They went to Steak On the House, Darvin’s favorite restaurant. Drinks were served quickly as Darvin demanded excellent service and since he was a big spender, most restaurants were happy to comply. Tiffany couldn’t keep her eyes off Darvin, so Mark didn’t feel any compunction about turning toward Penny when he raised his wine glass and said,“To be in the company of a beautiful woman is a rare treasure.”
Penny blushed and clinked her glass with his. Darvin stared darts at Mark. Yeah, Darvin, I’m no genius, but I’m smarter than you, asshole. Mark smiled at Penny. He watched Darvin struggle to come up with a better toast and chuckled to himself when he saw he'd outclassed his teammate, the big star. A legend in his own mind. Uh oh. Suddenly Mark envisioned Darvin taking revenge on the practice field. Tough shit. I’m just as good as you...maybe better. Bring it on. Mark tried to keep the hostility out of his eyes but wasn’t sure if he succeeded. When the food arrived, Darvin dug into his steak with enthusiasm. He kept making raunchy comments, comparing consuming food to sex. He put his hand on Penny’s leg several times and leered at her. She tried to laugh but Mark saw her furrowed brow and noticed her pushing his hand away repeatedly. Anger rose in his chest. She’s a lady, you asswipe. Not a piece of meat, like a steak, for you to manhandle and throw away.
"Back off, Darvin. Can't you see she's not interested?"

TUESDAY TALES - PICTURE PROMPT - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Here is my three-hundred-word story written to this picture prompt for the holiday. This is the beginning of the Christmas story to appear in 2013, last book  in "The List" series &, yet to be named.

Giselle Davenport couldn’t stop the tears clouding her eyes as she walked into the dining room. Thanksgiving with the Andrews family, her next door neighbors in Pine Grove for many years, couldn’t fill the void created by the loss of her own family. The pain fresh in her heart, forced her to leave the beautiful table, a reminder of holidays past. She wandered into the living room and perched on the window seat in the old Victorian.  Pulling aside the lace curtain, she peeked outside. Her eyes widened in surprise. She didn’t know Will Benson had bought the small house across the street. Engaging in a snowball fight with his young son, he didn’t see Giselle watching him. His hair was as black as ever and his smile still broad. She pressed her fingertips against the glass as if she could touch him through it. His last words to her six years earlier echoed in her heart. I’m not looking for a CEO. I’m looking for a wife…a woman to make a home and have children with me. I guess that’s not you. Good luck with your career.             She had loved Will with all her heart but loved her career just a tad more. Now it was holiday time. Work ground to a halt while people immersed themselves in the joys of laughter, love and sharing with their families. Giselle no longer had family so the holiday had become a hollow, lonely time. She had heard about Will’s marriage. That could have been me. A heaviness settled into her heart.                    “Come, Giselle. We’re sitting down,” Mary Andrews, matriarch of the family touched her shoulder. Giselle gave one last glance out the window before pasting a small smile on her lips. Mary put an arm around her and they entered the dining room together.   CLICK HERE TO RETURN TO TUESDAY TALES  CLICK HERE TO GO TO MY WEBSITE
