Gothic Memories
I have a lot of great memories from being on REPO! The Genetic Opera's set. There was also a hefty amount of pressure and anxiety in those weeks leading up to filming in September of '07.
After years of struggling, my project was being made and a gigantic crew of movie people – most of whom I'd never met – were scrambling to get everything ready for camera. I'd stroll past the racks of in-progress costumes, sets, and props and think, Wow! This is really happening!
One of the things I remember most was peeking into the make-up department and seeing issues of Gothic Beauty magazine strewn about—all with Post-it notes tagging pages that might be used as inspiration for REPO!'s character makeup. At the time, I'd never heard of the publication, but was naturally drawn to its aesthetic and, of course, its gothic beauties. Mostly, I remember thinking, Yes! This is what REPO!'s world should look like!
It's five years later, and the folks at Gothic Beauty reached out to me and asked if they could cover my indie comic book series, The Molting. I of course said yes, and, as it turns out, The Molting made the cover.
Kirsty Evans of Gothic Beauty has this to say about The Molting, "There are no superheroes in this comic. All the characters are flawed and the story doesn't flinch away from depicting them as such."
Pick up issue #35 of Gothic Beauty at newsstands to read the full article, and order your copy of The Molting series at www.TheMoltingComic.com.

Runnin' with the Devil!
In 2008, after receiving lukewarm critical response and a very limited theatrical release to our musical horror film REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA, director Darren Lynn Bousman and I decided to take a less orthodox approach to finding an audience. The Repo Road Tour was born.
We toured REPO! like a rock concert, creating one-night only event screenings across the country… and the rest is history. Four years later and REPO! is still a proud home to showcasts and late-night movie madness worldwide. The Road Tour helped earn REPO! its place in cult cinema history and both audiences and the creators were part of the journey.
It's 2012 and we're back with an edgy, new musical film event, THE DEVIL'S CARNIVAL… and the carnival's coming to your town starting April 5th!
I invite you to join us on an exclusive nationwide road tour featuring burlesque, special personality meet and greets, Q&A forums, sing-alongs, costume contests, and a whole lot of devilish behavior. You'll also get to enjoy never-before-seen REPO! The Genetic Opera behind-the-scenes footage and bonus features, and, most notably, an exclusive viewing of THE DEVIL'S CARNIVAL.
Don't miss your chance to be a part of the next phenomenon. GET YOUR TICKETS! http://thedevilscarnivaltour.eventbrite.com/

OBSESSED WITH DETAIL
Late last year I collaborated with a longtime friend and colleague, Sanjay Nagar, to create a ten-page, comics-style pitch book for his screenplay, Apprentice. My illustrations would represent a scene from his story and serve as a tool to help secure film financing.
Unlike most of the storyboard gigs for which I've been hired, these pitchboards were not action heavy. On the contrary, the Apprentice scene was all about mood, pacing… and a character obsessed with detail. I'm always up for an artistic challenge, but this last prospect scared me, as drawing panels "obsessed with detail" sounded like code for jam-pack-every-inch-of-every-frame-with-millions-and-millions-of-miscroscopic-lines.
Sanjay also referenced the artwork of Dave Gibbons in Watchmen and Brian Bolland in The Killing Joke—two of the greatest graphic storytelling works of all time—as samples of what he was looking for. No pressure, right?
After spending the last three years drawing and inking my indie comic book series, The Molting, I'd grown accustomed to working in a blotchy, expressive, urban visual style. For Apprentice, I knew I'd need to employ a much tighter, cleaner illustration technique.
The story also called for the integration of existing artwork—the oil paintings of William Holman Hunt—so I had to devise a way to feature this non-comics artwork into a comics medium without compromising either work.
Like with most creative endeavors, it took a bit of work to discover the visual language of Apprentice, but once I got into it, the panels and pages progressed relatively painlessly, and I'm very pleased with the end result. My The Molting collaborator, letterer Oceano Ransford, provided the finishing touches to the illustrations with a few well-placed sound effects and captions.
