SHADOWING STELLA - Elle E Kay - One Free Book

Welcome back, Elle. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I love reading romantic suspense, so it’s the genre that comes most naturally to me. I write romance, too, but romantic suspense/thriller is where I feel the most at home.
I love reading romantic suspense novels. Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life? The day my son was born.
How has being published changed your life? It’s given me a sense of accomplishment, and the work itself now takes up many hours of my life, but most things have stayed the same.
What are you reading right now?I’m reading the Cape Refuge Collection by Terri Blackstock. I haven’t read enough to have an opinion yet, but I usually enjoy her books.
What is your current work in progress? I’m finalizing the third and final book in the Endless Mountain Series due out later this month, Chasing Sofie.
I’m looking forward to featuring it on my blog, too. What would be your dream vacation?I’d love to go back to Hawaii, but my husband wants to go to Alaska first, so Alaska it is. I’m sure I’d love it, too, but I’m not fond of the cold. I’d also love to go to Scotland. My ancestry is Scottish, and I’ve always longed to go there, but it’s chilly there, too, from what I understand.
I’ve had a couple of contemporary books with Scottish heroes. How do you choose your settings for each book? Some of them are set in the area where I live, Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountain Region. Others are set out west because they’re Western historicals, so they would only make sense set there. Several of them take place in Cimarron in the New Mexico Territory, because I used to live in the Jemez Mountains, so I’m somewhat familiar with the terrain of the area, and it works well with the stories since it’s near the Santa Fe Trail.
If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why? That’s a tough one. I’m not much for celebrities or politicians, so I guess it would be my son, Ian. He’s stationed in San Antonio, so I haven’t seen him in a long time. I’d love a day to spend with the grandkids, too. We are hoping to plan a vacation to San Antonio, so we can see them all soon.
A lot of authors choose someone who isn’t a celebrity for that question. What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading? Bird watching and playing with our farm animals. The goats provide endless hours of entertainment.
What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it? Starting. That’s it really. If I can write those first few words in each writing session, then the words will flow, but getting to the point where I open the document and start writing can be challenging. I tend to procrastinate.
What advice would you give to a beginning author? Read craft books. You may think you know everything there is to know about writing from reading, but you don’t. There are things you don’t notice until you start writing yourself. Learn the craft. It will pay great dividends.
Tell us about the featured book. S hadowing Stella is the first book in the Endless Mountainseries. It was also my debut novel. It’s different from the other books I’ve written in that it offers additional points-of-view. Much of the book is personal to me, so it was a labor of love. The book touches on serious issues, but does so in a tasteful way that provides hope and encourages faith.
Please give us the first page of the book.Stella rubbed her eyes. Her heart beat hard against her ribcage. She jumped up in the bed she’d been lying in. Holding the sheet in place with one hand she took in her surroundings. A high end hotel room it seemed. A painful stabbing sensation let her know all was not well. What am I doing here? Stella listened intently to make sure she was alone. When she rose, she looked out the window and noticed she was on an upper floor with a private balcony overlooking the ocean. The waves crashed violently against the sandy shoreline. As her senses awakened, she realized that her last memory was from the club the night before. She glanced around the room wildly. Finding her clothes stacked neatly on the chair, she dressed as quickly as she could with shaking fingers. It took several tries to get the button on her skirt fastened. What happened to me? Where are Cindy and Joan? I need to get out of here. Stella opened the door to the hallway and peeked out to make sure nobody was around. I’ve got to get home. She hurried to a nearby elevator. When she reached the lobby, she looked over at the front desk clerk; a middle-aged woman with long gray hair. For a moment, she considered talking to the woman, but decided against it.Instead, she exited the hotel through the front doors, looking back at the older woman with the kind blue eyes one last time.

THE EXPRESS BRIDE - Kimberley Woodhouse - One Free Book

Dear Reader, I’m featuring another book in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. And Kimberley Woodhouse is one of my favorite authors. I know you’ll love this story.

Welcome back, Kimberley. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Well, I chose the era of the Pony Express and had to research that a great deal. Then all of the Daughters of the Mayflower have a thread of espionage running through them. Figuring out how I wanted to work that in was fun – I decided to use treasury notes from the time (since there wasn’t paper money yet in America) and the forging of them. But it was really the characters and their pasts that made it all come to life. Forgiveness is a big theme.
I love authentic historical things in the novels, and forgiveness is one of my favorite themes. If you were planning a party with Christian authors of contemporary fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Ronie Kendig, Colleen Coble, Susan May Warren, Rachel Hauck, Nancy Mehl, Becky Wade. Because I LOVE their books and they are all wonderful people.
I love that group. I know all of them personally, except one, and I also LOVE all of their books. Now let’s do that for a party for Christian authors of historical fiction, what six people would you invite and why?
Tracie Peterson, Karen Witemeyer, Connilyn Cossette, Mary Connealy, Becca Whitham, Kim Vogel Sawyer. Again, because I love, love, love their books and they are some of my favorite people.
I love these authors books, too. And there’s an author I mentored in each group. Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?
My most difficult problem at this time is just keeping my schedule under control. There’s several book deadlines a year, plus all the edit deadlines. Plus speaking engagements and everything else that goes along with it. I’m a full-time author, but I’m also a full-time pastor’s wife.
We will pray for you as you move forward in both careers. Tell us about the featured book.
The Express Bride
takes place in 1860 during the short period of the Pony Express. The tagline on the back of the book says: The Wilderness is a great place to hide…
Jackie is the heroine and she has had a pretty idyllic life, but everything comes crashing down when her father dies, and her past comes to light.
Elijah is the hero and is in search of his partner’s long-lost benefactor because she will inherit the fortune, but hits roadblock after roadblock.
Then there’s a threat to the USeconomy with the forgeries of Treasury notes…
They all must find the truth, and learn about forgiveness.
Please give us the first page of the book.
This is from the Prologue which is 1834:With shaking limbs, she climbed into the awaiting, plush carriage. The precious bundle in her arms worth far more than money, houses, trinkets, or trunks of clothing that she left behind. Time stood still for a moment as the scent of the fresh, spring rain filled her senses and transported her thoughts back to another spring day. If only things had turned out differently. How she loved the gardens in spring. As her memories rushed over her, the gravity of what she was about to do yanked her back to the reality around her with a harsh jolt.  The unmistakable sound of pounding footsteps on the brick walkway above her made her cower into the corner of the carriage.
Oh, why couldn’t the driver hurry? She’d paid him handsomely to take her on the first leg of her journey and she needed him to get the horses moving. Fast. Her heart thundered in her chest, knowing all too well what every second meant. Every beat harder and more painful than the last. Footsteps crunched around the carriage and then soft words were spoken to the team. Didn’t he realize the urgency?
Oh, please God… please. Help us get away in time so—
“Nooooooo!” The deep, bellowing scream interrupted her prayer and made her shiver.
She didn’t dare look. But she couldn’t help herself. Opening one eye, she peeked out the window and saw the man she’d loved—and feared—the most running down the front stairs outside of their massive house, a bottle in his right hand.
I’m sure all my readers wonder, along with me, if she gets away. How can readers find you on the Internet?

MY BEREAVED BILLIONAIRE - Katie Evergreen - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, This is a good beach read or for when you just want to unwind with an interesting romance. I highly recommend it.

Welcome back, Katie. Why do you write the kind of books you do? I love romance. I have always loved the idea of a happy ending. I think that love gives us hope, and hope gives us love and that the intertwining of the two amazing feelings is such a wonderful thing. I love to be able to immerse myself and my readers in such a world where love and hope exist.
I so agree. Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life? The day my daughter was born. She has made my life complete. She is seven now and keeps me on my toes, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
How has being published changed your life?Being a published writer was a long-held dream of mine. I think, now I am published, I feel as though I belong. It has been a lot of hard work and is still a lot of hard work. But it’s a job that I love and being able to do what I love for a living has been life changing.
It has for me, too. What are you reading right now?I am currently reading The Power by Naomi Alderman. It was recommended to me by a friend and I am absolutely loving it. What can happen when women take control is a very powerful concept—hence the title, I guess.
What is your current work in progress?I am working on the next book in My A-Z Billionaire series. I am on letter H and will be revealing the title to my readers in my next newsletter.
What would be your dream vacation? The Maldives. That is one box I haven’t ticked yet, but I will do one day. Those perfect aqua seas and golden sand. I’d love to stay in one of the bungalows on stilts in the water and swim every morning with the tropical fish.
Sounds wonderful now that we in Texasare nearing triple temperatures. How do you choose your settings for each book? The settings come to me as I’m plotting. For example, I knew My Ghostly Billionaire needed to be somewhere remote and isolated. So I carried out some research and came up with the Scottish Highlands which was perfect. I don’t necessarily decide on a plot or a location first, they seem to appear together.
If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?I would absolutely love to spend an evening with Cecelia Ahern. I think her books are magical, and I could talk to her for hours about how she comes up with her ideas, what her writing process looks like, and just generally act all fan girl-ish. I think she would be a fun person to meet with.
What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?I love to bake. I will bake a cake or loaf or cookies most weeks. And I cook all meals from scratch. So if I’m not writing, you will find me in the kitchen, probably covered in (gluten free) flour!
What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?Procrastination. I find it really hard to settle down and start writing in the mornings. I need to check Facebook, emails, Instagram, and make numerous cups of tea before I feel ready to start. Once I’m in the flow of it I’m okay, but it’s that first step I find the biggest hurdle.
What advice would you give to a beginning author?Keep writing. Writing is like all other creative fields. The more you practice the easier it gets. You wouldn’t expect to sit down at a piano and be able to play Mozart straight off. The same applies for writing. Write. Write. Write.
Tell us about the featured book. My Bereaved Billionaire is the second in My A-Z Billionaire Series. It follows the story of Nate who set up a dating website and had to create a pretend wife to obtain funding for it. The story meets Nate as he is preparing to bury his pretend wife so he can live the life he wants to without having to lie.
It’s a story of love at first sight, of family values, and of learning how important open communication and truth are in relationships.
Please give us the first page of the book.Liberty Reynolds sighed as the guest bell rang out from the lobby.  She tried to tame her corkscrew curls back into their hair band but after a day of changing beds little blonde ringlets were poking out all over the place. Giving up she took a deep breath and swung open the door to the reception hall.
“Welcome to Pebble Cove Motel. How can I help you?” Liberty’s voice sang as she tried to beam her widest smile.
With the latest pair of guests happily ensconced in their little sea-view ensuite room, Libertytrudged wearily back down the three flights of stairs, through the door at the reception desk, and into the tiny office that lay behind.

It is my pleasure to feature your books on my blog, Katie.

A TASTE OF TRAGEDY - Kim McMahill - One Free Book

Welcome back, Kim. Why do you write the kind of books you do?
I write action, adventure, and suspense because that’s the genres I like to read. I can lean on my travels and my more adventurous younger years for some novels, and others I just go for the most entertainment value I can dream up.
Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life? The day I married my husband. We just celebrated our 33rd anniversary and I couldn’t imagine having taken this journey with anyone else.
I understand how you feel. We will reach 55 years of marriage in November. He is the only one3 for me. How has being published changed your life? I certainly have less free time. I work 40 – 45 hours a week at my regular job and try to squeeze in another 20 or so for writing and marketing. I know that will change one day, but for now I juggle both to the best of my ability.
What are you reading right now? Celtic Empire by Clive Cussler
What is your current work in progress? I recently submitted my 4th novel in the Risky Research Series to my publisher, A Measure of Madness. The 5th, and likely final in the series is still in its infancy.
I will be eager to feature them on my blog, too. What would be your dream vacation?  I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel a lot. I really don’t have a bucket list, but generally I like visiting places a little off the beaten track, and I like to be warm. I guess, someday I’d like to take a boat up the Amazon.
How do you choose your settings for each book? Every trip I take always provides fodder for another novel, too. If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why? Samantha Brown. She is one of my favorite travel show hosts and she just seems like a really funny and fun person. I would love to hear some of her “behind the scenes” travel follies.
What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?
What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it? My most difficult obstacles are finding time recently and marketing. I know the time issue isn’t permanent, and I’m still working on overcoming my lack of experience in marketing.
I think that most authors are always learning new ways to market their books. What advice would you give to a beginning author? Be realistic in your expectations and dig for patience you may not even know you have.
Tell us about the featured book. Here’s the blurb for A Taste of Tragedy.
Morgan Hunter sacrificed everything for her career. She had yet to encounter anything she wasn’t willing to do to succeed...until now. When she uncovers evidence that the healthy foods that she’s been hired to promote may be dangerous she must reevaluate her priorities. As questions mount and the body count rises, she finds herself caught in the crosshairs of an organization that will stop at nothing to hide its secrets and protect its profits. With no one else to trust, Morgan is forced to seek help from the man she drove away, but whom she never stopped loving.
Sounds interesting. Please give us the first page of the book. The newly fallen powder fanned out behind Dexter Fowler in a high arch as his skis slammed down at the bottom of each well-formed mogul. His knees bent to absorb the impact from the motion, and he kept his body low over the slope.
He loved the speed he could achieve while careening down the steep grade. The challenge of conquering the most intimidating mountains made him feel alive. The allure of a greater thrill always pushed him further, to the brink of his physical limits, testing the laws of physics.
Mornings like this transported him back to his glory days. He wouldn’t trade a moment of his lost childhood, the grueling training regime he had followed for so many years, the adrenaline rush of competition, more broken bones than he cared to count, or the exhilaration he felt over each victory in his career, for anything in the world. His only regret was missing the Olympics by one hundredth of a second, an eternity in the racing world.  He had given his quest for gold everything he had, mentally and physically, but it hadn’t been enough. Sometimes, things didn’t work out the way a person planned no matter how much effort was expended. The true test of a person’s character came from being able to move on, which he did.

DARK OF NIGHT - Alice K Arenz - One Free Ebook

Welcome back, Alice. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
Hi, Lena, thanks for having me back on your blog.
I’m always amazed by the results of God’s leading. While I was busy thinking it would be impossible to write a short mystery/romantic suspense, He was encouraging me with bits and pieces of information that quickly hooked me. Dark of Night was a surprise from the title to the ending, and I’m truly grateful He gave me this story.
The horizon? Um, I’ve got a Christmas novella—or longer—due the first of September. God’s given me the title, Hiding From Christmas, and a few character names. I can’t wait to see what comes next!
I love it when He gives us the stories. Tell us a little about your family.I’m married, have two grown daughters and four grandchildren—two boys, two girls. Oh, and one grand-dog—at least that’s what we call him. We love getting together to play games and visit. That usually involves eating, of course, but I like the visiting and games most.
Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?I don’t read as much as I’d like because of chronic issues that make it difficult. I used to devour a minimum of three novels a week. I miss those times.
What are you working on right now?As mentioned earlier, I’m working on a Christmas book—Hiding From Christmas. I don’t know for sure, but the title makes me think it will be a romantic comedy.
What outside interests do you have?As you’ll see, most of my “outside interests” rely heavily on family. :)
My oldest granddaughter is a very talented musician and I love listening to her. Her latest interest has been in Ragtime, and it’s fascinating to watch her grow and develop as she learns more and more.
My other granddaughter is active in the children’s community theater where she lives, and it’s always a treat to go to one of her performances. Last year, her little brother was also in the play, so that was a lot of fun. Later in the year, their mom performed in the adult theater group.
Since I can’t garden anymore, watching my older daughter take care of hers has become a real joy. I love seeing the different plants and flowers she chooses grow—and how happy it makes her when they thrive.
How do you choose your settings for each book? The settings are always fictional Missouri towns. A name will pop into my head—totally a God thing—and then my husband and I will search to make sure it doesn’t already exist. It’s usually the second thing I’m “given” in regards to the story.
If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?The easy answer would be Jesus—but that’s too obvious. :)  Let me see. . . the “historical” part is throwing me. Wow, Lena, this is a tough one! There are so many names swimming around in my head, but not one of them is someone I’d want to spend an entire evening with.
Ok, this is really “out there,” but I’d like to spend an evening with the original depositor(s) of the Oak Islandtreasure. Strange, but true. I’ve been watching The Curse of Oak Island since it began on the History Channel, and would like to know the answers to the mystery!
What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels? That it would involve research—which is something I’ve never enjoyed.
What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?To be thankful for the blessings I have in my life and not bemoan all the things I can no longer do. I start every morning with a prayer thanking God for all He’s given me and try to remember to continue to thank Him throughout the day. It’s hard sometimes—especially when I see a book I might like to read, a picture I’d like to paint, or flowers I’d like to plant for myself. I’m definitely a work in progress.
What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?1. Learn everything you can about writing—hone your language skills, study punctuation (I’m horrible with commas!), read everything about the art of telling/showing a story, how to research effectively, and READ across the genres to get a handle on things.2. Learn how to market yourself and your books in today’s world.3. If this is what you truly believe God is leading you toward, NEVER EVER GIVE UP!
Tell us about the featured book. Dark of Night is a mystery/romantic suspense. The following tells you more about it.One-liner:  Where Nightmares Become Reality
Back Cover Blurb:Determined to get justice for the brutal murders of her parents twenty years ago, Kelsey Carol returns to the scene of the crime—Seaton, Missouri. But what she quickly learns is that every clue brings more questions than answers. And, nightmares really do come true.
Please give us the first page of the book.“We’ve got to stop meeting like this, Ms. Carol.”
I followed the detective as he weaved through people representing all ages, ethnicities, and walks of life, each of whom had been caught out after curfew. A kind of “controlled” chaos accompanied the din of angry voices and myriad of smells. I preferred the smell of stale perfume and alcohol to that of unwashed bodies, but given the situation...
“Don’t you think an eleven o’clock curfew is a little early for the average person?”
“These aren’t ‘average’ circumstances.” He replied without turning. “You were informed the last time we caught you roaming about—”
“I wasn’t roaming. I was on the roof of the Historical Society—with the key Director Hanson provided for access.”
“After the city-wide curfew.”
“Adult curfews have been deemed unconstitu-”
“And I know Hanson told you,” he interrupted, ignoring me.
“Just so you know, I’d been there since a little before dusk and lost track of the time.”
Well, I for one will look forward to finding out why this person was on that roof so long. How can readers find you on the Internet? My web site is www.akawriter.combut it’s out of date right now because I’ve lost the computer and program I used to make the site. Perhaps a better place would be to look at my Author Page on Amazon. You can get my bio as well as a complete list and description of all my books.
Thank you, Alice, for sharing this new book with my blog readers and me.

DARK OF NIGHT - Alice K Arenz - One Free

FINDING JOY - Hope N Griffin - one Free Book

Welcome, Hope. What would you like for our readers to know about you personally?
Well, I love to write and I love to connect with others. If anyone wants to reach out via email or social media I’d love to connect. They can find me across social media @HopeNGriffin or email hope@hopengriffin.com For those in Florida, I’m available to speak at events and at small groups. For those who are in need of articles for newsletters or blogs, I’d be happy to discuss writing for them. I currently work full time as a freelance writer.
Tell us about your family. My family. I have three children who I adore and my soldier who is now learning to live the retired life. We live in Florida near my family, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. After spending so much time away from them during John’s military career, it is so nice to simply meet up for dinner or to go to the beach together.
Have you written other nonfiction books? Yes. I’ve written a two-week devotional for every couple who has ever struggled to maintain a long-distance relationship, whether from a week-long business trip or a year+ deployment. To receive a free copy, readers can go to www.HopeNGriffin.comand sign up for my email list. Or go directly to https://mailchi.mp/5eefad8665c9/milesapart
Do you have any other books in the works right now?I do. I’m always working on something new.
What kinds of hobbies and leisure activities do you enjoy?I love to paint. The girls and I have claimed the dining room table this summer. We’re working on worldbuilding for a fantasy world we’ve created. They’ve started writing short stories to go with it. I also have discovered my favorite date night is to go to Painting With a Twist or to go floating down the Rainbow River with my neighbors.
Why did you write the featured book?I started writing Finding Joy as a personal journey through John’s first deployment. I ended up continuing through the second deployment and discovered I had something others needed. Finding Joy is about learning how to not lose your own purpose and self through the struggles of long-distance marriage. Distance adds a few challenges to marriage but that doesn’t mean it can’t work.
What do you want the reader to take away from the book? I want them to not feel alone in their struggles, to know it is normal to be tired and frustrated. One young lady came to me and told me that she began her soldier’s deployment with big plans to lose weight, to keep the house perfect, and to be the support system he needed. Towards the end of the deployment, when she found my book, she was frustrated and felt like a failure. Finding Joy helped her realize things don’t have to be perfect. Deployment isn’t just about the one who is gone. Memories still need to be made. The house can be dirty, the weight doesn’t have to fall off. Instead she discovered that what she was missing was making her own memories and enjoying the journey. Honestly, if she is the only person that it impacts in that way, then I feel as though I’ve done my job. She got it! She found joy in the journey. That is what my book is about.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell my readers about you or your book?Just because I’ve written a book on marriage does not mean my marriage is perfect. There is no such thing as perfect. Everyone struggles. Currently we are readjusting to a new normal of disability, VA appointments, and retired life. Every season of life brings new challenges. My book is not a guide to “do this like me and you’ll be the perfect wife.” Instead my book is simply my journey toward joy through some very difficult times following my daughter’s cancer diagnoses and my husband’s deployments. I’m on the journey with you. Reach out. I’d love to chat.
Where on the Internet can the readers find you?http://HopeNGriffin.com

SENT RISING - Erin Lorence - One Free Book

Welcome back, Erin. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?
I have the same question...what next? Right now, I’m at a crossroads in life—I’m about to pursue a Masters in Teaching, I’m a busy wife and mom, and I still love writing young adult fiction. Timewise, how am I going to make all these important pieces fit, especially when I start teaching?
I’m staring “change” in the face. I’m relying on God to show me how to use my time in a way that pleases Him.
Tell us a little about your family.I grew up in a supportive Christian family to whom I’ve stayed super close. I met Brian, my best friend/husband, 20 years ago at Washington State University (WSU). We currently live in Bonney Lake, Washington, with our two daughters, Savannah, age 11, and Brooke, age 8. We value family time, and until recently we were blessed by getting to live minutes from both sides of our family.
Tragedy struck not long ago when my mom died after a three-and-a-half-year battle with a super rare and aggressive lymphoma. We miss her every day but are comforted by the fact that she’s in Heaven as well as our new addition to our family—our beagle, Charlie. He’s such a funny, cheerful guy.
Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how?I read less! Once I pick up a book, I have a problem putting it down, so I have to be careful not to start a novel when I have a deadline or a personal writing goal I want to meet.
What are you working on right now?My next young adult Christian fiction takes places off the Oregon coast. A rebellious teen must overcome her ocean phobia, as well as her anger at her deadbeat dad.
What outside interests do you have?Teaching. Years ago, my husband and I joined a small, start-up church, and I got thrust into kids’ ministry...as in I be in charge of children’s ministry, otherwise our church wouldn’t have any program for the kids. As a nurse, I’d always enjoyed mentoring nursing students, but I discovered my passion for teaching kids, and later when my husband and I began our church’s youth group, working with teens.
My love for teaching young people Biblical truths definitely influenced my writing the Dove Strong Trilogy. I want all kids to understand how awesome it is to have a relationship with Him!
In 1973, I started the children’s choir program at a church, as a volunteer. How do you choose your settings for each book?Dove Strong takes place in the Oregonian, pine-forest landscape I visit each summer. I decided on this setting before I chose my characters’ names or had hammered out the plot. My second book, Fanatic Surviving, detours to an opposite setting—the treeless Chihuahuan Desert, in order to test Dove’s survival skills. Sent Rising ties up all loose ends, while letting Dove experience ocean for the first time.
Throughout the trilogy, Dove repeatedly strikes out with a certain journey in mind...but God has other plans, and she ends up in unexpected places...like a rooftop in Portlandor a Californian cave. Yet don’t we experience similar surprises in real life? We have tunnel vision about our own plans for the week, and sometimes God has other plans for us. When that happens, do we stay calm and accept his direction, or do we try to grab the steering wheel back from Him?
If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?I choose Jesus! I can’t imagine what I’d say to Him...but I’m guessing if I came at Him with a list of questions and an agenda, He’d turn the conversation to whatever it is that I really need to hear.
What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?Honestly...nothing. Having foreknowledge of the bumps in the road and long hours would have discouraged me, and then I might have thrown in the towel before I began. Who knows?
What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now?Have patience in uncertainty. Don’t stop praying, even if you feel He’s not listening. He is. His answer could be “not quite yet.”
What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?#1:  Discover the rules to writing your genre if you want to be published.#2:  Write the story for yourself and not for what you think others want...but be okay with future changes to your “masterpiece” once editors become involved.#3:  Finish it!
Tell us about the featured book. Here is the blurb for Sent Rising : No more hiding. This has become Dove Strong’s motto since she accepted her role as a Sent Christian to live among nonbelievers for a year. But then her worst nightmare comes true. Her family disappears from their secluded tree home, and they’re not the only Christians in the nation who’ve been snatched. All clues about the numerous disappearances point to nonbelievers... and the remaining believers are not happy. While Dove and her cousin, Trinity, hunt for the missing Christians, Dove stumbles upon a secret plan to force the Reclaim. Already, vengeful Christians gather in local camps to train for battle, and Dove’s brother is one of the bloodthirsty. Will Dove have the strength to rise up, put a stop to this war, and save her family before a red stain covers the nation?
Please give us the first page of the book.My fistful of carrots flopped onto the pasture’s dead grass. I paused with the spear’s red-stained tip two paces from my heart.
A couple dozen pointed poles and pronged branches stuck out horizontally from the giant juniper bush at the edge of the forest, positioned to impale the unlucky trespasser who stumbled too close. While I’d harvested the summer’s early vegetables from Wolfe’s backyard, my brother had been busy beefing up Micah Brae’s home security.
I scratched the red wooden point with my fingernail. Not blood. Beet juice...from our garden patch.
“Gilead, this paranoia of yours is stupid. We’re here to live peaceably with these people. Not skewer them.”
His humming dropped off, though he continued to secure another spear. “Don’t stand there hollering in the open, Dove. You’ll attract the enemy. On second thought, keep hollering. I wouldn’t mind trying out his new defensive boundary while it’s still light.”
Trinity paused in the act of hanging what appeared be a glass wind chime above Micah’s prickly doorway. She jingled it at my lifted brow. “Burglar alarm. To wake Micah if anyone tries to sneak in while he’s sleeping. Plus, it’s the color of smoke.”
“And the color of your eyes. Subtle.” I snorted. Trinity had strewn reminders of herself everywhere in our neighbor’s cramped, juniper-bush dwelling—from a corn silk pillow the exact hue of her hair to duplicates of her tattoos scratched in the forest floor. She’d planted these subliminal messages in hopes that he would stop being blind to the fact that he liked her in the same way that she liked him.
