THE FAITHFUL FOX - Jamie Bryant - One Free Book
Welcome back, Jamie. Tell us about your latest book. My newest book titled
The Faithful Fox
is book seven in a nine book collection called The Fruit of the Spirit Collection. The entire series was inspired by the passage in the Bible from Galatians 5:22, 23. In this new book, a fox named Red gets worried when his father doesn’t return home and ventures out in a snowstorm to find him. Red encounters an eagle named Old Golden and Black Bear, before being rescued. The Faithful Fox teaches children that God is faithful and encourages them to put their faith and trust in God. Since this book is in a nine part collection, when can we expect the next two? I hope to have them both written and at least one illustrated and released in 2021.
Do you have a pet you would like to tell your readers about? I do. My dog Gracie sits on my lap and sleeps with me too. She was rescued by a friend of mine from the animal shelter and when I met her I fell in love. I picked her up and my friend let me know she was planning to re-home her. The rest is history. She’s part Maltese, part Terrier, and Jack Russel we think.
You moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin, about 18 months ago. Are you a Packer fan yet? Well, kind of I guess. I have a packer T-shirt and jacket and truthfully when you live in and around Green Bay you just become a fan. Did you try anything new in 2020? I did! I started a YouTube Channel titled: Storytime with Jamie. On my channel, I read either a story from one of my children’s picture books or a short story from my book, Fish Guts and Other Bedtime Stories. I was able to complete one for each month. I hope to increase that to two a month this year.
What’s your favorite hot drink? Black coffee or coffee with cream.
What’s your favorite TV watching snack? Popcorn for sure!
Do you have children and grandchildren? My husband and I were blessed with three children and even more blessed with ten grandchildren. Three of our grandchildren live close to us here in Wisconsin and the other seven are in Texas.
Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers about this featured book The Faithful Fox? The story is fun, exciting, has vibrant characters and offers a great teaching opportunity about faith and faithfulness.

KAMILAH - Kelley Rene - One Free Book
Welcome back, Kelley. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon? My word for 2020 was clarity. I asked God for clarity in the direction He wanted me to go with my writing. I really struggled with not writing to market, not writing cutesy RomCom, or other whimsical stories. I now see more clearly that my calling is to give a voice to those who don’t have one. A voice for the voiceless. Tell us a little about your family.
My hubby and I have recently become empty nesters. All five of our children have flown the coop, searching and settling into adulthood. Now that we live near the beach, they’re happy to visit as often as possible. That was our plan all along. {Insert maniacal laughter}
Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how? Writing has changed my reading habits in that I choose to read outside of my normal favorite women’s fiction genre. It can be a struggle, but I am really intrigued by what others enjoy reading. Sometimes I’m surprised by a book I otherwise wouldn’t have picked up.
What are you working on right now? The fourth novella in my European Collection will finish out this project. I hope to have it done by summer and compile the four into a paperback anthology.
What outside interests do you have? I’m an avid crocheter, bike rider, beach goer, and people watcher. I’m also very involved in Toastmasters International, currently working toward Distinguished Toastmaster.
How do you choose your settings for each book? I don’t really choose my settings, often they choose me. A simple stroll outside, trip to the mall, or flight to a new location can inspire a story.
If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why? This was the hardest question for me to answer. There are so many historical people I’d love to meet. Aside from Jesus, I’d really like to spend an evening with Mother Theresa and glean from her experiences and wisdom. I would love to hear stories of her life in her own words and from her perspective.
What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels? That I couldn’t just write books, I'd have to market them as well. I love creating new characters and plot twists, but the fun ends and the work begins when I hit publish.
What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now? I do not have to live in the past. It doesn’t define me. He is enough. All I need to do is lean into Him.
What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful?
Don’t wait to get started. Every word written is a building block toward becoming your best writer-self.
Stop thinking you’re not a writer. If you put words on a paper, you’re a writer.
Never give up on your dream. Believe in yourself.
Tell us about the featured book. Kamilah is the third book in the European Collection, a series of novellas inspired by true experiences while my family and I lived in Europe. It is the most true of all the stories in this collection, and it is the one nearest and dearest to my heart. I think of Kamilah often. Please give us the first page of the book. A tall woman wrapped in an olive-colored headdress stood across the street, her right hand rested on the trunk of a blue sedan. She held my gaze when our eyes met. I considered waving her over. Bargain hunters were already pilfering through the American toys that littered our front yard, dampened by morning dew. Weeks of preparation culminated in my annual yard sale, and our basement had never looked so empty. Would one more shopper make much difference?
“Where do you want the clothes?” My preteen son, Jacob, dropped a large trash bag at his feet.
“Over there’s as good as any.” I pointed toward a bare spot in front of a hydrangea bush weighted down by lush blooms.
Souvenirs from Barcelona, London, and Romehad accumulated on dressers, nightstands, and in closets. Two kids per room meant double the stuff, so regular purging made space for upcoming birthday and Christmas presents.
A tired wooden table surrounded by four matching chairs rested near the street, designed to lure looky-loos eager to carry off American goods.
An early riser rifled through a bucket of penny toys, lining up a row of Hot Wheels cars at the start of a race. Red dots stuck to bigger toys marked prices in euros. Everything open for negotiation, sold to the highest bidder. Anyone interested, really. It all needed to go. Leftovers would be loaded into the Suburban and donated.
I accepted a few coins in exchange for a bouncy ball, a stuffed bear, and a handful of miniature vehicles.
“How much?” A businessman, visibly pleased with his English, fingered a child’s plastic desk. Black permanent marker in several spots evidenced the hours of fun the desk had provided my own children.
“Ten euros.”
The man turned over the dainty chair, inspecting its underbelly. “My daughter will love this on her birthday.”
I winced. Had he noticed the scribbles running across the drawers?
He handed me a blue bill. With the chair tucked into the desk and both hoisted over his head, he trudged toward his BMW.
Casually rearranging the wares into the space the toddler desk had occupied, I noticed two women take seats at the worn kitchen table. One was the woman watching from the street earlier.
“Amerikanische?” Dark eyes trimmed by near-perfect brows dominated the woman’s almond face. Olive fabric hid her hair and spilled over her shoulders.
I nodded before suddenly becoming aware of poor OPSEC—never identify yourself as American. Kind of difficult when I talk and walk like one, or so I had been told.
“Wie viel?” How much?
I pointed to the red sticker indicating 100 euros.
“Funfzig, bitte?” Fifty, please? Bargaining was expected, but at nine in the morning, there was plenty of day left in which to sell. I decided to play hardball. “Nein danke. Einhundert Euro, bitte.” No, thank you. One hundred euros, please.
The pair studied the table once more and methodically pulled each chair out, squatting to examine the wood with eyes just inches away. Covered in layers of cloth, they swayed like apparitions in and out of the yard-sale goods. They migrated back to the table-and-chairs set and gave it one last look before crossing the street to the blue sedan.

WHEN THE MORNING STARS SANG - Marcia Gunnett Woodard - One Free Book
Welcome, Marcia. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters. I like to write my full-length fiction in the first person, and I think that influences me to write a lot of myself into my characters. Also, since I’m writing biblical fiction, the characters and their stories address issues that are common to the human experience. In the process of writing about human nature, I end up writing about myself. For those reasons, I think I write quite a lot of myself into my characters, although I'm not sure I do it consciously. What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done? In my opinion, the quirkiest thing that I have done is spending three weeks traveling alone by train from Chicago, across the Southwest to San Diego, and up the Pacific coast to Spokane, then across the northwest states, back to Chicago. I saw so much of the beauty of God’s creation, and met such a variety of fascinating people—an Amish family, college students going to a “rave,” a professor, a wildfire fighter, a Native American, a Mexican family who were visiting the US, European tourists who were exploring America, and a drug dealer (unbeknownst to me, until he was arrested at the station in Minot, North Dakota). I had a blast, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
My husband, however, thinks the quirkiest thing I’ve done is to create the Brocklehursts, a family of humorous fictional characters, which I've written and performed at conferences, etc. So far, there is Minerva Brocklehurst, with her weekly program, “Today's Word from the Lord,” her daughters, Gina (who loooooves to talk about looooove), Sunny Brocklehurst (the gospel singer wannabe), and Cousin Ferdeena Brocklehurst Fennelalaneen. (When people express amazement or amusement—or down-right laughter at her married last name, she always responds “Don't judge me! The heart wants what it wants, and my heart wanted Hubert Fennelalaneen!”)
Something tells me we still haven’t met all of the Brocklehursts!
When did you first discover that you were a writer? There were little hints and indicators along the way. I can recall when I was young, being sent to bed for a nap, or tucked in bed for the night. Instead of sleeping, I would lie in bed and tell myself stories. I also remember the moment my relationship with words began. I was about five, and pretending to read the newspaper when, suddenly, those little marks on the paper said something to me. “t-h-e”…. “The!” It said, “the!” And so the love affair began…. Then there was the interesting “business” I had in high school. I honestly never thought of it as cheating, but the deal was, that if you did my Chemistry lab work for me, I would write the intro and conclusion of your English Comp paper. But, I really knew for certain that I was a writer when I was in college. I had begun my freshman year as a nursing major—I wanted to do something “meaningful.” Sometime during that year, after getting positive feedback from professors and other students, I began to understand that the most meaningful thing I could do would be something that I had a passion and a gift for, and switched my major to English.
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading. I like to read almost anything—history, sci-fi, mystery, fantasy, the Bible, self-help, spiritual development, scripts, poetry, biography, and some romance (if it has an unpredictable plot line). When I was a kid, my mom had to put the cereal back in the cabinet at breakfast, after I poured my bowlful. Otherwise, I’d start reading the boxes and make myself late for school!
How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world? I talk to God all through my day. I listen to worship music—everything from George Beverly Shea to Rend Collective. Sometimes, God will plant a song in my thoughts and I’ll go around for hours (or longer) with it repeating in my head. I might “chew” on a scripture passage, finding new insight. I may play with grandkids, spend time with my husband, talk to a friend on the phone. I sew, travel, go camping. And of course, writing helps me keep my sanity. But when I’m writing to “stay sane,” my genres of choice are parodies, limericks, and top ten lists—something to bring laughter into my day, and into the lives of those around me.
How do you choose your characters’ names? In writing biblical fiction, the main characters names are usually already chosen for me. But in the case of the secondary characters that I create to bring the story to life, as well as when I write more modern fiction, the characters most often introduce themselves and tell me their names. Very rarely, I might have to give a name a little tweak.
In a children’s book I wrote, the main characters all have names that reflect one of their personality traits. For example: Mia is self-centered, and Sophia really values wisdom. I’m also working on a series of picture books that have kind of “cartoony” illustrations, so the characters’ names become kind of caricatures of the real names: for example, “Adele” becomes “Adeloonee”,
In this book, When the Morning Stars Sang, I gave the two main characters new names that sounded similar to the old ones, and retained the original meanings. The purpose was to avoid what a writer friend calls “the curse of the familiar.” This happens when the reader recognizes the characters’ names and dismisses the familiar story, as if they know it so well that there is no more to learn.
What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of? That would have to be my family. The love of my life and I have stayed in love with each other, and married to each other, for forty years. Together, we’ve raised four relatively well-adjusted, reasonably mature contributors to society, and they are raising thirteen of the cutest, smartest, most loving kids in the world! The other day, my 11-year-old grandkid and I were talking about how God plans His care for us in advance. The child said, “Yeah, Grandma, God never says, ‘Whoa! I didn’t see that coming!’” (Oh! And did I mention these kids are wise, too?)
If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why? If I were an animal, I’d be a cat. If you’ve ever seen a cat sleeping in a patch of sunlight, you might understand why. Cats like to be independent and self-sufficient, but they’re open to pampering. They can be poised and dignified, or playful and goofy, but on their terms. They know how to totally focus, and how to completely relax. They know how to set boundaries, and they make it clear that you are not the boss, you are staff.
What is your favorite food? What day is it? Actually, I have a lot of foods that I really like—foods from different cultures and iconic American foods, main dishes, desserts, and snacks. But my current favorite is a Hoosier staple, Sugar Cream Pie. With only five ingredients in the filling, it’s super easy to make. I made my first one (really, two) over the holidays, and if you have a weakness for things that are rich and creamy and sweet like I do, it’s love at first bite! I’ve posted the recipe on my “Book and Blankie Society” Facebook group page.
What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it? The problem that was the biggest roadblock for me was believing that God could use me, a stay-at-home mom with no college degree, living in a quiet, little town. While I was giving God all my excuses, I stumbled upon the all excuses Gideon gave God, for why he couldn’t save Israel. Then, God said to Gideon (and to me). “Go in the strength you have…am I not sending you?” (Judges 6:14) My biggest roadblock was learning to believe what God says about me. And, as I trust and believe Him more, and go in the strength I have, He gives me more words to encourage me. “God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.” and “Let God dream for you…your dreams are too small!”
Tell us about the featured book? Eva had perfection. Her home, her marriage, her life—it was flawless. Then Sypher showed up, telling her she was missing out. Was it worth the risk? Should she trade the perfection she had for the “something better, something more exciting” Sypher claimed he could give her? This re-imagining of the story of Creation and the Fall is told by Eva as she recalls the perfection of her life—the unbounded love she and Aidaan had shared, the perfect beauty of the newly created earth, the indescribable joy she’d experienced in the presence of Shaddai—all of which she valued so lightly and threw away so thoughtlessly. In the story, she recalls the enticements and rationalizations offered by Sypher. And how her choices had set in motion the downward spiral, from interest and intrigue, to temptation, to sin. As her story unfolds, it becomes clear that in the thousands of years since The Day of Darkness, the deceitful Serpent hasn’t changed, and he still uses the same old tactics and tricks on us as he has with every generation that came before us.
The books title comes from Job 38:7, where God in His conversation with Job, refers to Creation as, "...when the morning stars sang together....”

"Aidaan? When will it stop?”
I couldn’t take any more. I felt certain my husband was as clueless, as powerless as I was, but I asked him anyway. I couldn't keep myself from whimpering as another wave of pain came. It had started early this morning, waking me out of a sound sleep, and had been growing stronger and more constant as the day had passed.
Aidaan crouched beside me under our small lean-to. I could tell he wanted to do something to ease my pain, but nothing was helping. He sighed and waited. When he could see by my expression that the pain had decreased, he answered.
“I don’t know, Eva. I’ve never seen anything like this happen….”
“I know that!”
I realized my voice had been sharp, almost harsh. But in this moment, I had no patience with anything which didn’t help me accomplish whatever it was my body was doing. Another wave of pain stabbed at my lower back and squeezed at my belly like a giant hand. I heard a low moan and realized it was me. My entire body was drenched in sweat. Aidaan reached out and tried to brush back the damp hair that stuck to my forehead. I found him annoying. My mind and body needed to concentrate on the pain, and his touch was distracting, like a fly buzzing around my head. I swatted impatiently at his hand.
Sighing again, Aidaan stood and picked up the wooden bowl that sat by my sleeping mat. His stiff movements as he stretched his legs and straightened his back told me he had been sitting too long. I immediately felt sorry for my impatience, but I couldn’t bring myself to apologize.
“Your water is warm,” he said. “I’ll get you some cold from the stream.”
As he turned to go, I felt the hysteria rising within me, like a cobra preparing to strike. I could feel myself beginning to panic. I needed the water, but I needed Aidaan here, too. I would have to tell him what I had seen. I called after him.
“Hurry, Aidaan! Hurry! That thing is still there, in the tree. I saw it watching me with those lifeless eyes. It still wants something—it still wants more! Hurry!”

FAITH'S MOUNTAIN HOME - Misty M Beller - One Free Book

Welcome back, Misty. Let’s do some fun questions first. What song most closely resembles your life? Oh goodness! I’m drawing a blank on this one. J There are songs that I wish resembled my life. You might could say they resemble my heart. Songs like “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” (Patsy Cline) and “It is Well With My Soul” (that wonderful hymn by Horatio Spafford). And maybe throw in the folk song “Home on the Range” to reflect my love for the western states. Do you have a favorite Bible verse? And why is it a favorite? That’s a tough one! One of my favorites is Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of Godand His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. (NKJV) It reminds me to keep myself centered on God’s directions instead of constantly shifting to what the world says is right or okay.
What is the one thing you wish you could go back and change in your life? I was blessed to meet the Lord early (at four!) and was raised in a Christian home, so I didn’t go through a great rebellion in my teen years. But there were times I ran forward with what I wanted to do without listening to for His leading. I so wish I’d tuned myself better for his voice back then. It would have saved me lots of pain and frustration!
I so understand that. What is the most important characteristic for a good friend to have? I think maybe for me it would be a caring heart. As I survey my really good friends, that seems to be a consistent trait. J
What extracurricular activities did you participate in when you were in school? Horses, horses, and horses! Oh, and piano. I was actually homeschooled, and throughout my childhood and teen years we had horses. From the time my older brother and I were old enough to do odd jobs around the house for money, the horses were ours. We saved up and bought new horses, saved for riding lessons, saved for horse shows, and eventually that was one of my first full-time jobs as an older teen: training horses, giving riding lessons, and showing horses for other owners.
What is your favorite movie of all times? I have to admit, I’m a Pride and Prejudice lover. J The newer one with Kiera Knightly is good because it follows the book fairly closely, but I grew up watching the BBC version with Colin Firth, and that will always be my favorite.
Tell us about why you wrote this book. This is the 3rd book in the Hearts of Montana series, and it picks up not long after the events in book 2. In book 2, Laura was kidnapped by a gang of thieves, along with the young boy she was watching at the time. Now, Laura is the heroine in book 3 (
Faith’s Mountain Home
). The hero in this book is actually one of the gang members, Nate, who was strongly opposed to her kidnapping and tried to free her several times. I always love redemptive stories, and I was so excited to see how Laura and Nate would overcome the pain of the kidnapping. I love Nate’s protective heart, especially since he’s accepted the Lord now and is working to make restitution for the harm the gang did.

Laura Hannon dared another step on the rock ledge that wrapped around the mountain. The flat space was just wide enough for a person to walk, as long as she stayed close to the stone mountainside on her right. BOOKS AFLOAT - Delores Topliff - One Free Book
Welcome, Delores. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters? I draw fairly heavily from life experiences—mine, those of my friends and students, plus extensive reading and research. What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done? Probably chasing living porcupines with a soft sweatshirt or sweater to gently swat them and collect loose quills for making authentic Native American porcupine quill necklaces and earrings.
When did you first discover that you were a writer? In the third grade I started rattling off rhymed adventure stories to my classmates when the teacher left the room. Two of those stories expanded into two of my four illustrated children’s books. I also developed quite the pen name—Clarabell Butterslosh Hooknose Crabernacle the III, in person, otherwise known as sailor first class—the latter in deference to my US Navy-serving father. I don’t know where I got all those words, but my classmates enjoyed them.
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading. Suspense, adventure, classics, biographies, autobiographies, humor, non-fiction. I’m not a great fan girl of hot romance, science fiction, or speculative. When I read romance, it’s mostly when some of my close friends have written it.
I write romance novels, but there’re not hot romance, they’re sweet and clean. How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world? I’m not sure I always keep my sanity, but I try. I’m a committed Christian, which is the source of much strength and peace. I’m addicted to the beauty, order, and peace found in nature and love spending intentional refueling time there.
How do you choose your characters’ names? I roll possibilities around in my head. Sometimes I’ll hear and remember resonating names or intriguing place names as I travel that I consider using for characters. Some may be close to or reminders of people I’ve known or of things they’ve done or of their quirky lovable characteristics. I have learned that the good protagonists need to have a few flaws and villains need to display a few good points.
What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of? Through my university teaching years, many foreign students have lived in my home and become extended family. Many insisted I come visit, so that led to foreign trips and mission trips, true learning and connections, and heartwarming lasting relationships of extended family.
My husband and I have hosted four different exchange students from different European countries. That enriched our lives and the lives of our children. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why? A deer on high forested mountain slopes in the Pacific Northwest of Canada and the US. I’ve surprised them in rivers, on hillsides, come across them in the woods, and found spotted fawn so brand new and perfectly camouflaged, they were almost impossible to see and had no odor. It’s a treat to experience moments like that.
My father was a game warden in Arkansaswhen I was growing up. We fostered orphaned fawns. I loved bottle feeding them. What is your favorite food? Thai Chicken Curry cooked in coconut milk and/or mango sweet rice./The best I’ve ever eaten was in a Thai restaurant in Volcano, Big Island, Hawaii—almost worth going back just for that.
Sounds delicious. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it? I’m a college teacher with English/History double majors. Too much teacher-speak ends up in the dialogue and too many characters can sound alike. I work hard to make them stand out individually. Since I love history, I’m inclined to stuff in too many details = overkill. I’m working to overcome both roadblocks.
Tell us about the featured book? Years ago, our community librarian in Vancouver, Washington, nourished my love for books. When I was ten, she told me I read more of them than any other member and asked what I wanted to do when I grew up. I loved the nearby Columbia River and felt bad for people along there that didn’t have books. I answered, “Start a floating library houseboat for folks along the Columbiawho don’t have books.” Later I became fascinated to learn that in WWII, a Japanese submarine actually did enter the river. I combined both situations. Books Afloat is the result.

“Ted Vincent, I don’t need a chaperone to drive me to Olympia.” I whip around and glare, the musical background of my beloved Columbia River not soothing me this morning. Men can be so difficult sometimes. Ted’s making me sorry I walked to the A-1 Garage to borrow his car.
During his break, he’s out front, rag in hand, dusting a gleaming fender. “If you won’t let me drive Henrietta, I’ll ride the bus.”
“That bus doesn’t run today, Annie.” He rubs away a water spot. “It’s just that she can be cranky, and I’ve never let anyone else drive her. Tell me again why this is important now? During wartime?”
I let out my breath with a whoosh. What’s with Ted? Since I moved from Oklahoma to Vancouver during high school, Ted usually understands what matters. Why doesn’t he get this?

DEATH OF AN IMPOSTER - Deborah Sprinkle - One Free Book
Bio: When Deborah Sprinkle retired from teaching chemistry, she wanted to do three things: attend women’s Bible study, join a book club, and write a mystery novel.

Welcome Deborah. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters. In my first book, Deadly Guardian, I based many of the details about the main character on my life. I was a chemistry teacher. Madison Long is a chemistry teacher. I lived on a small lake in the Midwest. She lives on a small lake in the Midwest.
As for personality traits, I realized that I allow certain parts of my own temperament to be highlighted in each of my characters—some of them not so good. In a way, it can be cathartic to write a character that struggles with jealousy or something else that I’ve wrestled with in the past.
What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
When I was in college, my boyfriend (later my husband) and I volunteered at the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) road races outside of St. Louis. I was a communicator. Which meant I stood at one of the curves on the track with a set of headphones and reported back to central when the cars cleared our corner—or crashed. We wore white and had to stand so the drivers could see us and in case we had to run for our lives if one of them left the track!
I’m sure that was exciting. When did you first discover that you were a writer?
I believe our lives have seasons. When I was preparing to retire from teaching chemistry, I suddenly felt the urge to write a mystery. It was like God was saying, “Okay. Here’s your next assignment.” But it wasn’t like poof, you’re a writer.
I retired in 2004 and it wasn’t until 2013 that my first book was published, Exploring the Faith of America’s Presidents. Not a mystery, but a devotional I co-authored with Kendra Armstrong. It’s now out of print, but she and I are working on getting it reissued.
It would be another six years until my first romantic suspense novel, Deadly Guardian, was released.
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I spent most of my life reading only mysteries, suspense, and thrillers. When I retired, I joined a book club that meets monthly and discovered that there are so many other books out there that I love. Biographies for one. Especially those by David McCullough. Contemporary fiction like books by Fredrik Backman.
And when I began going to Christian writing conferences, I discovered inspirational fiction.
How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?
2020 brought our run, run, run world to a screeching halt. But slowly, we—me included—found ways to fill our days and soon found ourselves busy again. For me, daily meditation is a must. I need that time with God. Through that I’ve learned the importance of rest. I stop and relax—watch a movie, read a book, do a puzzle.
How do you choose your characters’ names?
I listen to the names around me. I love to use unique names for my heroines. Madison. Bernadette. Zoe. Once, we had a waitress named Mercedes. That name will definitely be in one of my books! As for the remaining names, I use the alphabet to help choose, trying not to let any two characters have first names that begin with the same letter.
What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
I can’t say I’m proud of anything because I’m nothing without the Lord. All that I do is in His strength and wisdom. But I will tell you what I’m most thankful for.
My husband and I have been married 50 years this year, and we’ve raised a daughter and son who are kind, considerate, and have a good sense of humor.
If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
This was a tough one because I watch a lot of nature shows. An animal has a rough life. And I’m not crazy about the thought of being a pet because I’m at the mercy of my owner for my food, water, and exercise.
But, if I have to choose, I choose a river otter. They live in family groups, have fun, and get to swim a lot.
What is your favorite food?
Another tough question because I love food. You’d think I’d say fish after the answer from above, but the truth is I really don’t care for fish that much. That might be a snag as a river otter.
I guess if I’m honest, it’s chocolate donuts. With sprinkles.
I love chocolate donuts, but I’m not fond of sprinkles. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
As a pantser, a writer who doesn’t outline but just sits down and begins to write, my biggest problem was hitting a roadblock. Where to go from there?
After much sweat and tears, I finally discovered a way to get around it that actually led to increased creativity. Before, I would have an idea for a scene later in the book, but wouldn’t write it because I wasn’t at that point yet.
But one day, I decided to write out scenes as they came to me no matter where they appeared in the book, and that was the key. As I wrote, ideas began to flow.
I’m a panster, too, but I write a timeline of events that have to happen. And I have to write in chronological order. Tell us about the featured book.
Death of an Imposter is the second book in a three book series named Trouble in Pleasant Valley. You’ll meet Dr. Daniel O’Leary and Detective Bernadette Santos.
Dr. O’Leary is in town on loan to the local hospital. At least that’s his story. Detective Bernadette Santos is the newest ranking detective on the Pleasant Valley Police Force, and she’s determined to do everything by the book. Which becomes her greatest struggle in this case. She’s paired with Detective Jeannie Jansen, who as a seasoned detective, tends to bend the rules at times.
She’s strongly attracted to the good doctor, but he’s become the target of some unknown assailant, and can’t—or won’t—tell her why. He knows things—has skills—that most doctors don’t have. Where did he learn them?
Bernie must solve the murder while discovering if Daniel is a victim or a cold-blooded killer. Her job demands it, and her heart requires it.

He knew when he started working for the organization it meant keeping secrets from Aunt Rose. Which hadn’t been a problem.
Until now.
He lived at one end of Ohio and she at the other. Misleading his favorite relative on a long-distance phone call was easy. But could he convince her of his lies face-to-face? More gray showed in her auburn hair, and more lines radiated across her face, but her gaze was as piercing as he remembered.
She chuckled. “I’m surprised your fancy hospital could do without you for that long. Or are you really here on some secret mission?”
Could she read minds as well? If so, he was doomed.

I’ve been a lover of history for decades. In college and graduate school, all my elective courses were history. Of course, I chose the countries and eras I wanted to learn about. When I began writing novels, my first one was a contemporary story. After that at least 75% or more of my novels have been historical, all the way from 1805 through the early 20thcentury.
I’ve always been fascinated by the relationship between Joseph and Mary the mother of Jesus. The Bible doesn’t give us a lot of information about their relationship. But by his actions, we can assume that Joseph believed the angel and Mary about her baby. He didn’t do the usual thing and put her away quietly. Instead, he protected her and from the day He was born, he became the earthly father of Jesus. I’ve often thought about what that meant for Joseph and for Mary. When I write a story of a marriage between a man and a single mother, I use the emotions that I feel God has revealed to me about their relationship.
The first time I read a marriage of convenience novel, I loved it. And I’ve read quite a few. I’ve also written a few. A Heart’s Gift is one of them. This book was an easy and interesting book to write.
I’m what’s called in the industry a seat-of-the-pants author, more or less. I do have the complete timeline of what needs to happen in the story in my head. When I sit down to write, I know where I’m going, but I don’t have every single scene plotted out as some authors do. And I pray a lot. During the time I’m writing a book, God drops ideas into my mind. Not just while I’m writing, but other times, too. That’s the exciting thing about writing. This keeps it fresh for me.

I never dreamed that the book would turn into a suspense novel in the last third of the book, but God knew. And it made it a better book.
