WHAT: Layering Pizzazz: A Writer’s Workshop

What exactly is setting? Why do you need setting details in your novel? How much is too much? How much is too little? Who cares?

For the answers to these and other questions about setting, come to the Bedford Public Library’s Writer’s Workshop as multi-published author Lena Nelson Dooley leads this workshop on setting. Be prepared to participate in the presentation, because not only will you learn about setting, you’ll get the chance to practice what you learn.

Bring paper and pen or your laptop, netbook, or tablet that is charged and ready to use. And don’t forget your creativity and imagination.

Admission is $25.

An excerpt

From Catherine's Pursuit (the book I've just about finished writing): She stared straight at him, with the moon bathing her delicate features. Somehow, the way she had lifted her head, their lips were only a breath away from each other. Only a small movement would connect them. And he wanted to kiss her more than anything in the world.

Part ot the scene I just finished writing

The skirt of her dress looked like water swirling around her body, and the lace jacket reminded him of the foam that topped choppy waves. Everything about her radiated warmth, as if he were in a tropical ocean. He could almost feel the floor of the church rock gently. Or was that him. He was caught in a maelstrom of unfamiliar emotions. Finally, he was able to take a deep breath and the feeling slipped away like a wave pulling back from the sand. Am I going insane?

The rest of the wedding passed in a blur, with him wishing that someday he could get married. His bum leg twitched, then started aching. A firm reminder of what his future would be. And it didn’t contain a wedding or family, no matter how much he wanted those things.
