UNBALANCED - Leeann Betts - One Free Book or Ebook

Bio: Leeann Betts writes contemporary suspense, while her real-life persona, Donna Schlachter, pens historical suspense. No Accounting for Murder and There Was a Crooked Man, books 1 and 2 in her By the Numbers series, released in the fall of 2015 Book 3, Unbalanced, released in January. Book 4, Five and Twenty Blackbirds, is due in April, with more planned for later dates. If you like accountants or are an accountant, check out Counting the Days: a 21-day devotional for accountants, bookkeepers, and financial folk. Leeann and Donna have penned a book on writing, Nuggets of Writing Gold, and Donna has published a book of short stories, Second Chances and Second Cups. You can follow Leeann at www.AllBettsAreOff.wordpress.comand Donna at www.HiStoryThruTheAges.wordpress.com. All books are available at Amazon.com in digital and print, and at Smashwords.com in digital.
Welcome back, Leeann. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?  From where I’m sitting right now, more book ideas than I have time. But that’s a good thing. It seems that every morning when I sit down for my quiet time, another idea comes during prayer or scripture reading. But for the short term, I’m investing some time in learning social media. I’ve decided to focus on blogging, for myself and for others, Twitter, and Facebook. In that order.
Tell us a little about your family. My real-life persona, Donna Schlachter, is the oldest of five siblings and the daughter of a nurse and engineer. Rather a standard family, actually. However, Leeann would be the youngest of three, with two older brothers. Donna would love to have an older brother.
Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how? Absolutely. Now I read with a red pen and a highlighter—not really, but mentally, I do. I pick out typos, passive language, and so on. And I note beautiful passages that I wished I’d written.
What are you working on right now? Right now I’m working on getting my fourth book in the By the Numbers series, Five and Twenty Blackbirds. Release date is slated for April 30th. Next will be Book 5, Broke, Busted, and Disgusted which is scheduled to release November 30th. And after that—who knows?
What outside interests do you have? My husband and I are very involved in an international ministry whose goal is to reach the lost for Christ through prayer, personal witnessing, and scripture distribution. Apart from that, we love to travel.
How do you choose your settings for each book? With the By the Numbers series, I decided to base my main character in a small east coast town, since I grew up in a place full of small east coast towns. But I didn’t want her to get stuck there, so I try to alternate each book with one set at home, the next set somewhere I’ve visited that I thought would make a great setting for a story. Book 3, Unbalanced , is set back in Bear Cove, Maine, and Book 4, Five and Twenty Blackbirds, is set in a town in Arizona similar to where my father and stepmother, who I dearly loved, were married.
If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why? I would love to spend an evening with Agatha Christie, to pick her brain about the stories she didn’t write and why, because I expect she had a hundred of them, at least.
What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels? I wish I’d known that the process didn’t stop with the writing, that I couldn’t simply write the book and someone else would take it from there.
What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now? He is teaching me stick close and listen for His voice. I’m reading Jesus Calling as part of my quiet time, and this point is reiterated every single day. I guess I’m a slow learner.
What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful? The first thing is to have a teachable heart. Be willing for the Lord to work in your life, in your writing, in your learning. Attend conferences. Submit to a critique group. Enter contests. And listen to the feedback.  The second thing is to connect with others. Join a writer’s group. Write in a community. Reach out to both readers and writers. Care about people. And the third thing is to write. You can spend all your time at conferences, learning. You can spend your day on Facebook and Twitter. You can guest blog all over the place and never write one word of the story or book that God has given you to write. You are the only person who can pen what He has called you to write. And always remember: writers write.
Amen to that. Tell us about the featured book. Unbalanced is the third book in the cozy mystery series featuring Carly Turnquist, forensic accountant. She finds herself knee-deep in wedding preparations and preparing to testify in a court trial, when she spots the town’s bank being robbed. However, nobody else seems to notice, and when she starts investigating, people start avoiding her—again. Then her husband’s long lost brother turns up on her doorstep, only to disappear shortly after, leaving his young son behind. And then somebody seems determined to keep the wedding from happening. Carly’s sleuthing alarm goes into overtime as she tries to save her credibility and her family in the bargain.
Please give us the first page of the book.If not for her son's wedding, this would be the happiest time of Carly Turnquist's life.
She loved her career as a forensic accountant, tracking down assets, including cash, bank accounts and stocks, and proving legitimate ownership. For most people, working all day collating the evidence file for her last client, a brokerage firm that suspected one of its account managers of embezzling funds, would have left them tired and cranky.
But Carly Turnquist, snoop extraordinaire, was on the case. She successfully unwound the convoluted trail of fraud and deceit, confirmed that the account manager was indeed guilty of stealing over a million dollars in the past year. She made recommendations for improved internal audit practices to ensure this didn't happen again. The result was the trial was on the court docket, and Carly had been served a subpoena to testify less than a week after the wedding.
No, work was invigorating. What really got her goat was she was stuck preparing dinner by herself. Mike was still working in their basement office on a program for a client. Her stepson Tom and his fiancée Sarah had pulled into the driveway just minutes before she was ready to put the food on the table. The handsome couple walked toward the house, hand in hand. Sarah tossed back her hair, laughing at something Tom said to her. The peaceful and happy picture they made brought a smile to Carly's lips.
Tom burst into the house, his nose in the air as he sniffed for evidence of what was on the menu for dinner. His exuberance made the front door slam open in the same boyish manner that had driven her crazy for years.
Before she could stop herself, those all-too-familiar words flew from her lips. “Don't slam the door.”
Tom laughed in the same way that melted her heart when she’d first met him over ten years before. “Sorry, Carly.”

SHATTERED GLASS - Rich Bullock - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I first met Rich on the ACFW email loop before we met in person at a national ACFW conference in Dallas. I was excited when his first book came out. I’ve read a couple of his books, and love his writing style, his characters, and his romantic suspense plots.
Welcome, Rich. Interesting picture. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about? My typical themes run toward redemption, forgiveness, second chances, and trust. My latest touches on faith. However, I will say these themes are organic, emerging as the characters grow and overcome. I don’t know what the themes are before the story is told. Because they are subtle in that way, I’ve had some Christian readers ask for more Christian content. However, my target audience is not just Christians.
What other books of yours are coming out soon?My newest book is Shattered Glass , the first in the Glass and Stone series.
If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?I’d love to spend time with Brad Pitt, because I understand he has face blindness (prosopagnosia) where he has trouble recognizing people and distinguishing one person from another. I have a mild case of this, which has resulted in some pretty embarrassing moments when I failed to recognize people I’ve recently met but don’t know well.
I think most of us have a touch of that. I know I experienced it for a while after each of my knee replacement surgeries. I’m sure the anesthesia and pain drugs were a contributing factor. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?Wouldn’t it be fun to shadow Ulysses S. Grant for a few days? An interesting man in such troubling times. I recently read this quote by him: In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten, then he who continues the attack wins. - Sounds like writing, doesn’t it? It’s the person who doesn’t give up who conquers.
That is so true. How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers?I recently heard an interview with some Mystery Writers of America Edgar award winners. While writing, they felt like their books were garbage (they used more colorful language!). And when they finished writing, it was an even bigger pile of garbage. One was an author who has successfully published over twenty books! Their point was, it’s all about what we do after that, our process which allows us to make something beautiful from the mess. All that comes from that final effort. Don’t quit too soon.
Tell us about the featured book. Shattered Glass :Lilly Hawthorne’s adoption five years ago is a rags-to-riches dream come true, complete with movie star mother and mega-producer father. But shortly before her eighteenth birthday, Lilly’s fairytale is destroyed when brutal attacks nearly kill her and threaten everything and everyone she holds dear.
Regardless of promises, Lilly quickly learns no one can truly protect her or her new family. She seeks expert training from a mysterious and deadly Russian woman, and prepares for what she fears will be a battle of life and death.
FBI Special Agent Kaden Hunt saved Lilly once, and he can’t forget his instant attraction to the young woman. Now on the trail of a cross-country serial killer, Kade and his team are closing in. But the closer they get, the more he fears the sadistic killer is targeting the one person for whom Kade will risk everything.
This story deals with self-defense, but it also shows dependence on others who care for us, and the faith to go on in the face of overwhelming odds.
Please give us the first page of the book.November 4th was the night Lilly Glass’s world exploded.
Her sketchbook was spread across her lap, her box of colored pencils sharpened. After glancing again at the open art book from the school library, she used the light brown pencil and drew the first swaying line left to right, then curved it around and down. She compared her outline to the horse in the book. The shape of the back and hindquarters was the same.
Lilly repeated the process several more times, filling the page with flanks, withers, muzzles, knees, and hoofs. But her mind was on the arguing coming from the mobile home’s kitchen.
She was wondering if the nightly fight would spill into her tiny room, when a tap-tap rattled the cardboard covering her bedroom window, startling her. There hadn’t been real glass in the frame since last summer when Mom’s current boyfriend, Jerry, the one arguing in the other room, hurled a beer bottle at the outside of the single-wide in one of his rages.
The cardboard surface was covered with crayon drawings of horses, a whole herd of red, black, yellow-gold, white, and brown beasts running and prancing. The brown ones were her favorite because they matched the color of her hair.
Lilly peeled back the crinkled duct tape closure and swung the cardboard open. Her friend Tony poked his head in and hitched his chin toward the door of her room.
“You okay?”
Lilly followed his gaze to the thin door. Jerry had come home fifteen minutes ago, reeking of beer and perfume. Mom was waiting, fortified by her own bottle, purchased at the Gas-N-Go. The thin walls did nothing to contain their angry confrontation.
“Wanna come out?”
Tony’s tanned face withdrew into the night as Lilly climbed onto the low bookcase and swung her legs through the opening. She snatched a gray hooded sweatshirt off the bed before dropping out onto a stack of plastic crates. Even though the days were in the 50s and sometimes 60s, the November nights were cold. This morning, thin ice had skimmed the dog bowls outside nearly every trailer.
Although the dogs probably got cold at night, Lilly thought them the lucky ones—they got to spend more time outside than the kids.

Welcome, Jen. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.I’m sure there’s always a small bit of me in all of my characters, but for the most part, they decide exactly what personality they want to embrace. After that decision has been made, it’s next to impossible for me to get them to change into the character I originally thought they were going to become on the pages of my stories.
I so understand that. I’ve had some of those characters. What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?Quirky has just always been a way of life for me, so to claim one thing as being the quirkiest would be difficult. To show why my days are quirky—let me tell you about a week ago, when it snowed, something it does often out here in Denver. I’d been shoveling snow for a few hours—we have an elderly lady who lives a street over whom I’ve been helping for years—she’s a stubborn sort and if I don’t get over there, she’ll pull out her own shovel, at 89 years of age no less. But … I digress. After finishing the shoveling, I came inside and was soaking wet, so slipped on a pair of super comfortable pajamas pants. Unfortunately, those pants were missing their drawstring, but … I wore them anyway and didn’t experience any difficulties until my dog needed to go outside. My dog is a spoiled girl, and old, and she apparently took issue with the part of the yard I’d shoveled out for her. So, grabbing a shovel, I went to widen her spot, and the next thing you know … my pants fell off. There I was, faux fur coat, Ugg boots, and … yes, pants pooled around the top of those boots for everyone to see because … of course, all the neighbors were out doing their shoveling. I laughed so hard as I retrieved my dog and then waddled up the driveway and back into the house. You may very well ask why I didn’t pull my pants up while I was outside, but that would have caused me to have to lift my coat. And, well, I thought I’d been exposed quite enough as it was, especially since I’m sure my very white winter legs were gleaming in the dimness of that particular day. J
LOL. When did you first discover that you were a writer?I’ve always enjoyed writing, but since my family was more on the scientific side, I never considered writing as a career choice. With one of my brothers being a surgeon and my other two brothers being engineers, I’m fairly certain my parents were beside themselves when I had the audacity to announce I was going to major in fashion—I’m sure if I would have chosen writing over fashion, well, I shudder to think what their response would have been to that. But, while I was in college, I found the English classes to be remarkably easy, and because of that, I’m afraid I might have gotten a bit … smug … until I walked into a creative writing class and met my nemesis. That professor and I seemed to loathe each other on sight because she was a throwback from the sixties and I was your typical sorority girl with a proclivity for wearing bows in my hair—think Madonna. Well, she assigned the first paper and I pulled out my tried and true method of writing, one that had always stood me well up until that point. I handed in the paper, confident I would see a lovely A marked on it after she graded it, but instead of an A, the professor gave me a big, fat D. I’d never had a D in my life, so … armed with righteous indignation, I set about on a quest to do better. That quest, in hindsight, taught me about writing for a target audience because the next paper I turned in was dark, creepy, and perfectly suited to that particular professor’s personality. I took Edgar Allen Poe’s “A Tell Tale Heart,” and rewrote it, using a giant eye instead of a heart. After I turned it in, I went back to class the next week, only to soon find myself in the dean’s office. My professor was certain I had stolen the work, or paid someone to write it for me, because she felt a sorority girl could not have penned such a piece. Luckily for me, this was before computers, so all I had to do was run off to my dorm room, grab my waste basket, and bring it to the dean’s office, the proof of my being the author seen in the many crumpled pieces of paper I’d used as a first draft. From that point on, I was the professor’s favorite student, and that is when I realized I might have an aptitude for writing—not that I acted on that realization for many years, but …
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.I’ll read just about anything except Science Fiction and naughty. I really enjoy romances, both historical and contemporary, love suspense, and I’m a huge fan of YA—I was really into the dystopian books, but I’m a little bored with that theme now.
How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?I rarely keep my sanity when I’m in the midst of a first draft, but after I get that done, I can socialize with people again, and try to limit the hours I work in any given day. I will work on the weekends while doing a first draft or if I get galleys back from my editor, but other than that, I take that time for family things.
How do you choose your characters’ names?I use a lot of old census data from the 1800’s, or scroll through old newspapers. I also really like asking readers to submit names to me—I’ll be having a character by the name of Miss Temperance Flowerdew in my next series. It’s just a fabulous name and was given to me by a friend of mine from high school. She’s been researching her ancestry and came across Temperance. From the moment she told me about her ancestor, I knew I had to have the name, and luckily, my friend gave me full leave to use it.
What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?My son has to be my greatest accomplishment. He’s a sophomore in college, majoring in engineering, and he’s just a great guy. My husband and I aren’t actually certain how he turned out the way he did, especially since he was a complete terror in his younger days.
I have a daughter like that, but now she is a responsible adult, grandmother, and able to minister to young women in ways many of us can’t because of her wild years. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?I’ve never actually thought about that before, but, if I had to choose an animal to be … I say I’d be a penguin because … well, who wouldn’t want to be one of those?
What is your favorite food?Oh, food … I love food, all kinds of food, but the older I get, well, I just can’t eat the way I used to eat. Some favorites would be pasta, and then there’s peanut butter, but … don’t get me started on chips. I adore chips, although they seem to adore my hips, so … it’s a rare occasion indeed when I allow myself to have chips.
What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?Since I write comedies, I’m always second-guessing whether or not I’ve written an amusing scene, or just dumb. I normally have to hit the walking trails and puzzle the scene out, talking out loud as I walk, which normally brings about some unusual looks from fellow walkers. When I return home, I’ll open the scene up again, and if it makes me smile, I’ll keep it, but if not, I delete and start again—hoping for the best.
Tell us about the featured book. Playing the Part is the third and final book of the A Class of Their Own series. It revolves around Miss Lucetta Plum, one of the most sought-after actresses of the day. Because she’s so sought-after, she attracts quite a bit of unwanted attention from the gentlemen, and when one of those gentlemen, the dastardly Mr. Silas Ruff, turns threatening, she’s forced to abandon the theater and flee the city. She soon finds herself, at the suggestion of her very good friend, Mrs. Abigail Hart, standing before a rather intimidating castle by the name of Ravenwood, a castle that just happens to be owned by Abigail’s rather mysterious grandson, Mr. Bram Haverstein. It quickly becomes clear that something is gravely amiss at Ravenwood, but before Lucetta can puzzle that out, or come to terms with the feelings she’s developing for Bram, her past comes back to haunt her.
Historical romantic suspense. One of my favorite reads. Please give us the first page of the book.October 1882 – New York City“Forgive me, Miss Plum, but there’s a gentleman outside demanding to speak with you. He claims to be your father.”
Miss Lucetta Plum paused in the act of removing her stage makeup and turned, finding Mr. Skukman, an intimidating gentleman she employed to manage her overzealous admirers, standing in the doorway of her dressing room. “How fascinating, Mr. Skukman, especially considering my father died years ago.”
Mr. Skukman arched a single dark brow her way. “Fascinating indeed.” With that, he withdrew, pulling the door firmly shut behind him. Seconds later, the sound of what was surely some type of a scuffle drifted into the dressing room.
“This is an outrage,” a man bellowed. “I demand you unhand me at once, sir.”
Recognition of the voice was immediate. Rising ever so slowly from a vanity stool upholstered in red velvet, Lucetta navigated her way across the cluttered dressing room. Stepping over a pair of high-heeled shoes she’d slipped off her feet the moment after she’d taken her last curtsy, she drew in a steadying breath and yanked open the door.

BRIDE OF A DISTANT ISLE - Sandra Byrd - One Free Book

Welcome, Sandra. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.I think there is a little bit of me in every character I write—even the antagonists. My hopes and dreams are funneled into their souls, my struggles with the Lord and my joy in overcoming doubts with Him. I find that I can rehabilitate past wounds, perhaps some that have never healed, by healing them through my characters. There’s a smattering of me in each of them.
What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?Dyed my hair Lucille Ball red.
When did you first discover that you were a writer?I went to college on a writing scholarship, and once there, I got scared. I thought, who gets published? No one! How will I pay back my student loans? The odds seemed stacked against success, so I changed my major to business and got a degree in real estate/construction management. Later, after I became a Christian, I felt like the Lord was showing me: Don't look at the odds, keep your eyes on me, God, like Peter did when he was upon the water. God is not subject to odds. We will achieve all the good works he has prepared for us, in advance, to do. There is nothing that you are called to do that you cannot do but also no way to open a door He has shut. Once we get a hold of that, it's easy to walk away from fear.
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.I love, and have always loved, reading every genre from picture books clear through to heavy, heavy nonfiction research books. I truly was the proverbial kid reading the back of the cereal box when I was a kid. One year, early in our marriage, my husband teased that he was going to tattoo himself with newsprint so I would pay more attention to him!
I’m sure my husband feels that way, too. I, too, literally will read the back of the cereal box if there isn’t anything else to read. That’s why there are other books waiting on the end of my table, so I’ll have something to read if I should finish a book while I’m sitting there. Of course, I don’t read if he is at the table with me. How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?I have scheduled date times with my husband and planned times with my grown children and friends. Right now, when the weather is good, I try to walk an hour and a half outside, each day, many times listening to the Bible on Audible. I love watching British television.
We missed it when it was on, so I ordered each season of Downton Abbey. We are almost finished watching the sixth season. How do you choose your characters’ names?I begin with lists of names from the place and era, and then I sift through and see which names “fit” my characters. For Bride of a Distant Isle, I wanted to use the name Annabel, to tie in with Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, “Annabel Lee.” Thankfully, it worked!
What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?Raising honest, hardworking children who love and trust in God.
If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?I would probably be my dog, a Havanese because I like to cuddle, I’m social, and I can get anxiously overworked if I let myself!
What is your favorite food?Italian doppio with steamed cream. I love all coffee drinks, with excellent, freshly ground beans. I don't put sugar in my coffee drinks, normally, so you can taste the richness of the roast and the quality of the cream.
And cheese. Really good cheese.
Tell us about the featured book. Miss Annabel Ashton is a teacher at the Rogers Schoolfor Young Ladies in Winchester when she takes a brief visit to her family home, Highcliffe Hall at Milford-on-Sea. She believes her stay will be short but soon learns that she will not be returning to the safety of the school. Instead, she remains at Highcliffe, at the mercy of her cousin, Edward Everedge.
Annabel protests, but as the illegitimate daughter of a woman who died in an insane asylum, she has little say. Edward is running out of money and puts the house up for sale to avoid financial ruin. He insists that Annabel marry, promising her to a sinister, frightening man. But as the house gets packed for sale, it begins to reveal disquieting secrets. Jewelry, artifacts, and portraits mysteriously appear, suggesting that Annabel may be the true heir of Highcliffe.
She has only a few months to prove her legitimacy, perhaps with assistance from the handsome but troubled Maltese Captain Dell’Acqua. But does he have Annabel’s best interests at heart?
And then, a final, most ominous barrier to both her inheritance and her existence appears: a situation neither she nor anyone else could have expected. Will Annabel regain her life and property—and trust her heart—before it’s too late?
Just the kind of story I like to read. Please give us the first page of the book.Near Milfordon Sea, Hampshire, EnglandMay 1851I had no warning before evil befell me.             Edward had abruptly recalled me to Highcliffe, but why now? It was not as if we'd often holidayed together, or enjoyed one another's companionship. In fact, over the course of our adult years I'd been home infrequently and we'd been mostly separated, at school, years before that. Grandfather was long dead, as were Edward's parents. Pretense could be done away with. Perhaps he'd had a sudden, inexplicable longing for family now we two were all that remained.             Unlikely.            The day after I arrived, I walked from the house, now crumbling, across the green lawn, now thinning, toward the Edge of the World, to gather my thoughts. I'd forgotten how the sea around Highcliffe relentlessly pounds the land, undermining it so fiercely that the earth quickens, churns, and slips; the breakers smother all sound, throwing off thickly salted mist that clouds vision like a cataract. For this reason, I had no signal that someone was approaching. Instead, I suddenly felt his breath curdling in my ear.             The whispering started.

RESTORED - Tanya Eavenson - One Free Book

Bio: Tanya Eavenson enjoys spending time with her husband and their three children. Her favorite pastime is grabbing a cup of coffee, eating chocolate, and reading a good book. Tanya is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers, Word Weavers International, and writes for Christ to the World Ministries. You can find her at her website http://www.tanyaeavenson.com/on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Google, or on Amazon.
Welcome back, Tanya. Why do you write the kind of books you do?I believe the Lord called me to write stories for Him. Several years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and it was a defining moment, not only dealing with my cancer prognosis, but asking the Lord if He truly called me to write as I thought or was I mistaken. But through the fears and searching for God’s direction, I learned He did indeed place this desire to write on my heart and no matter what I was facing in my life, that didn’t diminish His call. I’m inspired by the Lord to write inspirational Christian fiction so people may know the love of Christ. To know the depth He will go to have a relationship with us. And though we struggle, He uses us. He uses people like me, the ordinary, to do out of the ordinary things. Unexpected things—like writing.
Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life? The day I found out I was pregnant. My husband and I had been through so much within our marriage, our daughter was an answer to prayer and a precious gift from the Lord.
How has being published changed your life?Being published is a journey I’m on as an author, but also as a follower of Christ. It’s relying on God to direct my path that takes faith—a lot of faith. This seems funny to say, but sometimes I feel like I’m in training, allowing God to have His way in my life, and when I do, He uses me to touch others in ways I’ve never dreamed. I know this for sure, the Lord is fulfilling a purpose in me, and whether it’s in word or in deed, He will be glorified.
What are you reading right now?As of right now, I’m not reading anything due to my fast approaching deadlines for my current work in progress The Rescue. However, my reading pile has grown over the last months and I can’t wait to dive in!
What is your current work in progress?I’m changing gears from Contemporary to Historical Romance. I’m working on a series of novels set in the late 1800’s. The first novel in the All Roads Lead to Texasseries is called The Rescue and will release this fall!
What would be your dream vacation? My husband and I have always wanted to take a family trip to Bass Pro Shop in Missouriand stay in their log cabins, rent a boat, and go fishing. Twice we planned it, but we’ve had to cancel for various reasons. It’s a simple dream, but I hope we’ll be able to do in the future.
How do you choose your settings for each book?Settings depend on where I’ve lived or where I’d like to visit. If I’ve never visited the location for my novel, I do research about the setting and find someone who has lived in the area. This is where research comes in regardless of whether it’s a contemporary or historical novel.
If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?I’d love to spend an evening with author Lori Wick. I love the biblical aspects of her writing and how the characters feel like family. God was calling me to write, but it wasn’t until I read her The English Garden Series that I began write. God used her in my life, and I’d like to say thank you.
What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading? You won’t believe it, but it is fishing! I enjoy getting out in the bass boat and spending a few hours on the water. My dad always wanted a boy; instead he got a baby girl. He taught me how to fish at an early age, and it came in handy when I met a guy from my church who loved to fish. =) Now married nineteen years, my husband said it was one of the things he found attractive about me, a companion to share his life with.
What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?My greatest obstacle is time. I wish I had more of it. =) So I pray that God allows me to use my time wisely, to give me wisdom on how to write these stories for Him, and strength as I write.
What advice would you give to a beginning author? The best advice I’d give to a new writer besides encouraging them to study the craft or find a critique group, is to never give up. Writing isn’t easy. The journey has so many highs and lows that if you give up, you’d never know the person you’d become, or how your stories impact hearts and lives in the process.
Tell us about the featured book. RESTORED is a story about lost love being given a second chance. Sometimes love arrives when you least expect it.
Dr. Steven Moore is known nationally for saving lives. If only he could save his own. Unable to deal with his cancer prognosis, he retreats to a happier time in his past—to the woman who once stole his heart.
Four years after the death of her beloved husband, bookstore owner Elizabeth Roberts still struggles to sustain her faith and joy in the Lord as she raises her two sons. She strives to find a way through her family's grief, never suspecting a man from her past might offer hope for her future.
But how can there be a future when he's only come to kiss her and says good-bye?
Please give us the first page of the book.Sure! Hope you enjoy! Prologue
Elizabethran her fingers down the wooden handrail along the stairs, glancing at the ornate clock on the mantle. “Not much longer now.” Her heart pounded with excitement as her gaze moved to the framed picture beside the clock and settled on her husband’s handsome face. Warmth flowed through her as she lifted the portrait with its silver frame. Chris had just tackled their son, Luke, with the football in the front yard when she snapped the picture. She touched the glass over Chris’s blond hair. His hazel eyes peered up at her. She smiled. It still amazed her how their lives had changed throughout the years, coming back from the brink of divorce to discovering what unconditional love truly meant. What they meant to each other.
“Two hours and you’ll be home,” she breathed. This mission trip to Goma, Africa, kept Chris away for several weeks this time, but now it was time for him to come home to stay.
She closed her eyes, envisioning Chris’s arms around her. Tonight, she’d drink in the words of love she’d missed before she fell asleep every evening, the feel of his body next to hers.
She smiled and pressed a hand against her flat belly. “Yes, Daddy will be home soon. Won’t he be surprised?” The chime of the doorbell broke through her thoughts.
She set the frame down and hurried to open the front door. Elizabeth smiled at her sister and brother-in-law. “Hey, why did you ring the doorbell? You could have come right in.” She halted. Something in their expressions made her heart race. “Where’s Luke?” she asked her sister.
Sam’s mouth opened, but no words came out. She grabbed Phillip’s arm as if she needed support.
Moisture filled Phillip’s eyes. “There’s been an accident. They tried to call. We tried to call.”
“Lizzy.” Her sister moved to her side.
Elizabethcouldn’t breathe. No, God, no. Please, God, I can’t take losing another child. “Where is he, Sam? Where’s Luke?”
Phillip cleared his throat. “Luke is fine. He’s with Mom.”
Elizabethglanced between them, not understanding. “But you said there was an accident…that they tried to call—”
“My brother…” Phillip’s voice broke and a tear ran down his face. “Elizabeth, there’s been a plane crash.”
This gave me chills, it was so personal. How can readers find you on the Internet?Readers can connect with me at my website http://www.tanyaeavenson.com/. EMMA'S PRAYER - R A Giggie - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, I’m featuring a novel from one of my Canadian writing friends today.
Welcome, R A. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.I use a lot of my likes and dislikes for at least one of my characters, like my favourite colour, foods, hobbies, and such. However her personality is not at all like me. She may be very quiet, reserved, while I’m a talker and social butterfly.
What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?I can’t think of anything other than this: Years ago, I went to Africa for short-term mission. First time travelling that far all alone. After landing in London, I took the shuttle to the other terminal, got off, and walked away from my three suitcases to get a trolley. I didn’t go very far, but when I turned back, the shuttle driver had put my suitcases back into the storage compartment and driven off. He thought the owner of those three pieces was still on the bus. I have no sense of direction and had no idea where to go. Imagine the fun I had trying get them back.
I can imagine. We had a somewhat similar experience when we flew into Mexico back in the ’80s. When did you first discover that you were a writer?Just a few years ago. Writing became a hobby when I won our grade two class composition contest. Writing poems became a big thing when I was in my teens, and they often found their way as “fillers” between articles and columns in the local newspaper where my mother worked as a reporter. Later, married life happened, and it was still a hobby. I’d never called myself a writer until I published my first novel in November 2012.
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.I read almost everything providing it’s clean. My favourite genre is suspense, followed by historical, Amish, western, fantasy/paranormal. Sci-fi is the one thing that I’m not really into. This said, the fact that I don’t care for TV sci-fi programs doesn’t mean I wouldn’t enjoy anything in that genre. I just never read any.
I’ve read a few Christian sci-fi novels that were awesome. How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world? With great difficulty. :D Like many writers out there, I work full-time outside the home so balancing family and home with work and writing is a never-ending task. God is good, though, and faithful. He’s always made sure I had all I needed to make this work. I’m allowed to write at work during down time, so that’s a big advantage. With MS Word on my iPhone (yes it’s quite small but hey, where there’s a will, there’s a way), I’m able to write/edit/etc.
It amazes me how you and some others I know do that. I have a fairly large HD flat-screen monitor with my desktop. My stories are written using that, and sometimes a laptop for some editing. How do you choose your characters’ names? Many different ways. For first names, I have a Baby Name book, but sometimes it’s just names I hear in a conversation, on TV, or even read in a magazine. For last names, I go through the phone book, saying those names out loud with the first name I picked, until I find the perfect combination.
What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?First and foremost, my family. God’s blessed me with an amazing husband, two wonderful sons, and one beautiful grandson. Writing my first novel would be next. I love writing.
If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?A big old grizzly bear. I have no idea what it is about the grizzly, other than that big round face. In my opinion, it is the most amazing and beautiful animal in all creation.
What is your favorite food?Cheese. I eat it with just about everything. I cut small cubes into my salad, shred some on my omelet, or sprinkle grated parmesan on my chili or spaghetti, and even garlic bread. A day without cheese is … well not a good day at all. :D
I love cheese, too. My husband things everything is better with some cheese in it. What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?My biggest challenge was trying to understand Point Of View. Until I did, all I did was head-hop. No matter how people explained it to me, I couldn’t grasp it. One day the lightbulb finally went on and I GOT IT.
It took me until at least my third novel to understand POV. Tell us about the featured book. Emma’s Prayer is about a teen mom who puts her son up for adoption, but soon regrets her decision and sets out to get him back. Is it too late?

Across town, Cynthia Manning and her husband Logan long to have a family and after several miscarriages, they turn to adoption. They’re delighted when a baby boy is placed into their home. Is heartbreak inevitable?
Sounds very interesting. Please give us the first page of the book.April 2“Push!” Nurse Jackson barked.
The pain ripped through Emi’s abdomen, all the way to the tip of her toes. How much longer could she put up with it? “I’m too tired. I can’t do this anymore,” Emi cried.
“Girl, you should have thought twice before you got pregnant.”
A contraction stole Emi’s breath away. She grimaced, grabbed the handrail, and fixed her eyes on the overhead mirror. Her lips taut, she tensed every muscle in her body. Holding her breath, she pushed.
“Come on.” Nurse Jackson met Emi’s eyes. “The baby’s almost here.”
The contraction passed. Emi blew out a long ragged breath, and dropped onto the pillow like a rag doll. She eyed the husky nurse who had dark skin, short curly hair, and spoke like a drill sergeant. Emi didn’t care. She wanted it to be over. Another pain tore through her thoughts, scattering them like fallen leaves in a high wind.
“Come on, child. Push!”
The baby’s head appeared in the mirror above. Emi’s mouth fell open. In vain, she fought against the physical pain. Her heart fought harder against the mixed emotions swirling within. Was it a boy or a girl? The way he’d kicked the past few months, he had to be the next football star or professional boxer. The ultrasound technician had offered to tell her the sex. She’d declined. Why bother? She wasn’t keeping him. Or her.
“Okay,” the nurse urged. “One more push. It’ll be over.”
Emi had barely spoken a word since they’d wheeled her into the room the night before but enough was enough. “I don’t have one more,” she snapped. “You’ve been at me for hours like I could drop this baby with no effort.” Her voice resonated in the room. Sobs racked her body as the next contraction hit. Her face scrunched, she clenched her jaw, and she pushed with all her might. As the first rays of sunlight shone through the window seeking Emi’s blurred vision, tearing agony struck. The room spun. Noises faded. Total darkness. Silence.

RESCUED - Tina Pinson - One Free Book

Welcome back, Tina. How did you come up with the idea for this story? My love for WWII and movies of that time gave me the idea for this story. The Trail of the Sandpiper Series. Betrayed, Rescued and Avenged follow the story of Justine Whitman, a missionary wife whose compound is attacked and she must get herself and several children off the island through enemy lines. The navy is there and after a spy. And they have to use code to decipher between the real Sandpiper and the fake. The story comes from three movies Pearl Harbor, which shows the attack on the island. Father Goose, a story about a drunk coastwatcher and a girl's school teacher and the girls they have to get off the island, and Windtalkers, which tells about the Navaho Code Talkers.
Many times, people (and other authors) think you have it made with so many books published. What is your most difficult problem with writing at this time in your career?  Right now my mind feels kind of fried. I have several books to finish, and one on deadline, but we just moved and are still unpacking and getting our house in order and we are trying to set up a business and still trying to get our other house sold. Plus I just got over being sick. Needless to say, it makes sitting down to think hard. Not that I can't sit down, but when I do, I can't always formulate the words that have been running through my head. I hand write most of my stories and still come back wondering if that's what I really meant to say.
Tell us about the featured book. Rescued is the second in my Trail of the Sandpiper Series. Justine Whitman, whose missionary compound was attacked in Betrayed— book one, is still trying to get herself and several children off the island. She also has the US military to contend with. Tyler Merrick of the US Navy has finally decided she is not the spy and can be trusted, and he follows her to a sheltered island where they hope the Nandus, the sub that is coming to get them, can pick them up without Japanese detection as the Japanese are not only following them on land but they are waiting offshore for the sub as well. Justine and Tyler still don't know who the enemy in their ranks is and hope they can catch them before someone else dies.
Please give us the first page of the book. Island of New Guinea, 1942"Please, please, don't kill me. Don't..." She shrank back against the muddy sidewalls of her prison—afraid to look up at the man who reached for her through the bars of the grate. In her heart, she knew who reached for her; she could almost see his leering smile.
She whispered his name, "Thomas MacGregor," better known as Tomoyuki Nekata, the Japanese commander. The enemy.
He wanted her trust. Ha. The traitor. He'd come back to kill her. She froze, hoped he'd go away. He stood there. Watching her. Breathing heavily.
A long arm spanned the distant and his fingers fell on her. His nails cut into her head as he grabbed a handful of hair and began to tug.
She shivered and started to whimper, "No, no, please. I don't want to die. I can't die, my children, my children..." She pled with her tormentor. Thomas MacGregor didn't answer. He was a shadow with dark eyes and a white smile.
She started to scream.
Slapping at her tormentor, Justine sat up and found herself wildly swatting thin air. There was no hand in her hair, no tormentor. She sat in darkness. Alone. Her heart fluttered in her chest as she labored to breathe, she covered it and pressed. Then felt along her limbs and body to make sure she was okay. Her gaze darting about, she listened to the night and realized where she was.
It had been a dream, only a dream. Justine assured herself as she took a deep breath. She was still in Dugan's back room and, for now, she was okay.
"For now." She still wasn't off the island. All the fears that threatened to overwhelm her surfaced again.
Since the Japanese invasion, Justine's life had become one ordeal after another. She'd been imprisoned. Her husband, Mark, had died. The mission camp where she'd lived had been obliterated, leaving her with several orphaned children to lead to safety. Now she had the help of Tyler Merrick and the US Navy, but still ... she felt like she'd done a dismal job. Would she ever get herself and the children to safety?

Don’t sweat the small stuff. J
Tell us about the featured book. Beneath the Blackberry Moon is the story of my heart. It’s really one book under three separate titles. The first is the one I give away free to subscribers.
It is set during the Creek War of 1813-14 and is a sweeping romance that absconds with the reader, taking her to a Native American world most Americans don’t know even existed.
Here’s a little about it:Adela McGirth has never feared her neighbors, the Creek Indians, but a suspicious encounter with a steely eyed warrior shakes her confidence. Her dread soon becomes reality, but no fort is strong enough to hold off a party of warriors who fear nothing but the loss of their ancient ways.
Big Warrior Totka Hadjo, a Red Stick bound by honor to preserve his heritage, enters his toughest battles yet—the fight for love, the invasion of fear, and the inescapable ashes of each. The war was simpler before his enemy became a beautiful face with a gentle warrior’s spirit he cannot resist.
War, captivity, hunger that will not be denied. And a blackberry moon with enough pull to endure the test of time.
Please give us the first page of the book.Tensaw Settlements, present-day AlabamaBlackberry Moon (June) 1813From inside the cool, shadowy wood, Totka Lawe squinted into a bright meadow. Its broad sea of undulating bromegrass lay empty. Deceptive. He tuned his senses to the cold fingers of foreboding walking up his spine. His own fingers clenched both the wooden war club tucked into his belt and the lead rope of the packhorse snuffling at his ear.
Go through, or around?
Eight other warriors deliberated beside him, but it was his sister’s husband, Nokose, who would have the final say. Grandmother Sun neared the end of her trek, bringing to a close the delegation’s first day on the return trail to their talwa, Kossati, their Upper Creek village. One more sleep in land occupied by whites, followed by another two in Creek country. Then home.He swatted a mosquito from his ear and waited for Nokose to speak. Sweat coursed a line from his roached hair over the bare side of his head and down his neck. He shifted his weight to hide his impatience.
With each passing day, their mission grew more burdensome, their cargo more loathsome. The old wound in Totka’s leg throbbed, but he pushed beyond it and centered the load more squarely across his packhorse’s flank. The scents of horseflesh and leather failed to soothe him as he flicked glances through the trees.
This was white man’s land. For a little while longer. Soon, the Red Sticks would engage in war and then the land would be theirs once again.
At a stirring behind them, Totka stroked the sleek upper limb of his unstrung bow. No smelly, cumbersome musket for him. He peered into the murky shrubs. The darkness that descended held more than night. It seethed with intolerance and distrust so thick it could be measured in every narrowed gaze, in every unspoken word.
Totka no longer questioned whether he’d chosen the correct faction. For better or worse, he’d staked his claim with the Red Sticks. The scarlet feather tied to his hair had sealed it.
All he lacked was another battle, another feat of courage or extraordinary achievement, or another few scalps—white or red—to adorn the red pole in Kossati’s council square. Any one of those would bring his name before the council and, if the spirits wished, earn him higher rank.
The mare tossed her head and sidestepped, shoving him into a thorny bush, then swung back in the opposite direction. Feeding off his nervous handling most likely.
As he extricated himself from the shrub, the hem of his long-shirt snagged on a briar and ripped. Singing Grass, his elder sister, would have choice words for him.
“Ho, ho,” he cooed, shadowing the horse’s steps. He stroked her sweaty, quivering shoulder, but she stretched and strained against the tether. Head high, she rolled her eyes, revealing the whites, but Totka held firm.
The animal had tested his patience from sunup, and he anticipated hobbling her and brushing the day’s dust from his leggings.

SHADES OF CHOCOLATE - Cecelia Dowdy - One Free Ebook

Dear Readers, I knew Cecelia from the ACFW email loop. When we had our Minneapolis national conference, we had a giant book signing that stretched down the Mall of America main corridor quite a ways. Cecelia was next to me at the table where I was signing books. The event covered several hours, and we got to know each other there. I’m really pleased to share her new book with you.
Welcome back, Cecelia. God has really been moving in your writing life. What do you see on the horizon?I’d like to write as many books as I can while searching for people to read my stories. I’ve started promoting my novels to secular readers. I’ve actually found some people who’ve read my books and said they’ve been enlightened by my stories. These readers usually read hot, steamy romances, and they felt it was touching to read a story about characters who turn to God for answers to their troubles.
I’d also love to make a living with my writing someday, Lord willing.
That’s what we all want. Way to go. Tell us a little about your family.I’ve been married to a wonderful man for twelve years. We have a ten-year-old son. Our son has a black belt in karate, and he’s an honor roll student. He also loves to play video games. Both my husband and my son love sports. While they watch basketball and football games, I’m usually reading a book!
I read a lot of books while James and I are watching the TexasRangers baseball team on TV. We hardly miss a game, and I get a lot of books read that way. I occasionally write during that time, too. Has your writing changed your reading habits? If so, how? I noticed since I’ve started writing Christian fiction that that is what I mostly read. Yes, I still read secular fiction, but, I read it sparingly.
Me, too. What are you working on right now? Right now I’m working on Sweet Dreams, Book 3 in The Bakery Romance Series.
What outside interests do you have? I love to bake! I love baking cookies and cakes. I also enjoy some gardening.
How do you choose your settings for each book? I tend to choose places that are familiar to me. If I’m using a fictional town, I usually set it in Marylandsince I’ve lived in Marylandmy entire life.
If you could spend an evening with one historical person, who would it be and why?I’d like to talk to the Apostle Paul. I’ve been amazed and curious about the lives of the early Christians. I’d like to sit and talk to the Apostle Paul, discuss what’s going on in the world today. I’d like to hear what he thinks about the way the church has evolved over the last two thousand years.
What is the one thing you wish you had known before you started writing novels?I wish I’d known that I wanted to write novels! I didn’t realize I wanted to be a writer until I was almost thirty years old! If I’d known this earlier, I may have gotten my writing career started earlier.
I wrote my first novel in my forties. What new lessons is the Lord teaching you right now? Patience. I’m still learning patience. So difficult not to be anxious about certain things, but, I’m working on that with the Lord’s help.
What are the three best things you can tell other authors to do to be successful? Go to a writers’ conference and network with other authors. Read all of the books that you possibly can that are within the genre that you are targeting. Write the book – I’ve met so many “writers” that talk about writing, but, they don’t actually write anything.
Tell us about the featured book. Shades of Chocolate : Toni enjoys making chocolate treats in her bakery. Haunted by her abusive past, she struggles with her faith in God. Her world changes when a handsome stranger arrives, reminiscing about his childhood. Jason Matthews misses his days of working in his family's pastry shop. Estranged from his father, he longs to rediscover the joy and comfort from baking. When Toni's life is threatened, Jason realizes how deeply he cares for her. Can Toni and Jason overcome their pasts and learn to trust one another?
Please give us the first page of the book. The security guard grinned at Toni, wiping the crumbs away from his mouth. He placed the partially-eaten pink, heart-shaped cupcake on a napkin. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
She returned his smile, snuggling beneath the winter cape her fiancé Brian had gotten for her last birthday. “Happy Valentine’s Day to you, too.” She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. “I’m here to see Brian Carter.”
The guard nodded. “Go on up. His admin told me you’d be stopping by for lunch.”
“Thanks.” Toni’s high-heeled shoes tapped against the waxed floor as she strolled toward the elevator. Clutching the handle of her picnic basket, she entered, pressing the button for the third floor. “I’ve got to make it through this lunch.” She closed her eyes, the cool interior of the carpeted elevator bringing her a little comfort. Hopefully, her surprise Valentine’s Day lunch with Brian would give them a chance to talk about the problems they’d been having.
She exited the elevator, strolled to the double oak doors that led to Brian’s office. She slowly opened the door, blinked several times, her heart pounding. What in the world? This had to be a bad dream. Brian clutched his secretary, Gia, in his arms, kissing her! He moaned, opened his eyes, spotted Toni in the doorway. He dropped his arms, his light brown skin reddening.
“Toni—” He started toward her.
She froze, unable to move. She finally backed up, slamming into the wall behind her, her eyes locked with Brian’s. She opened her mouth, but she couldn’t speak. She glanced at Gia, who grinned, her eyes sparkling. Gia’s unbuttoned blouse granted Toni a peek at the lacy pattern of her bra. Finally finding her voice, Toni groaned, closing her eyes, her heart continuing to pound. She swallowed when Brian approached, the tangy scent of his cologne surrounding her. She’d usually found joy in Brian’s scent, but now, the nauseous odor of his aftershave just made her sick. He reached for her.
“Don’t touch me!”
“Baby, just give me a minute to explain.” His deep voice filled the room, as Toni made her way toward the door. Gia buttoned her blouse, grabbed her pantyhose from the floor and rushed from the office.
The chocolate muffin Toni had eaten an hour ago swirled in her stomach. A sour taste filled her mouth. The picnic basket slipped from her sweaty, shaky hands and fried chicken and chocolate pie exploded from the container onto Brian’s immaculate beige carpet. Her Valentine’s Day card landed on top of the pie. The intermingled scents of chicken and chocolate filled her nose, the food making her stomach cramp. She pressed her fingers to her quivering mouth. A sour taste filled her tongue. Brian approached her, grabbed her arm.
Vomit gushed from her lips, right onto Brian’s fancy leather shoes. He dropped her arm.
Blackness swirled around her, and she blinked. She couldn’t faint, not right now. She needed to give Brian a piece of her mind. She glanced at him. He studied his shoes, refusing to give her any attention. Did he really care more about his shoes than their relationship?
She rushed from the room.
“Toni!”
His voice echoed behind her but she couldn’t stop. Somehow, she finally made it outside to her car, got in, dropping her keys while trying to put them into the ignition. She couldn’t drive, not like this. Her phone buzzed, but she ignored it. Salty tears slid down her cheeks as she gripped her steering wheel.
