Anne Rice Was Wrong About #AskELJames

Yesterday on Facebook Anne Rice, an author who's written several books I admire, majestically defended E.L. James after James's Twitter event today spun out of control.

Instead of being a lovefest or a cyber tea party, #AskELJames turned into a free-for-all where critics of all kinds--wits and dimwits--told James what they thought of her books and her writing. The responses prompted this furious denunciation from Rice:

I'm receiving word from numerous sources that author E.L. James is bein...

Clarence Thomas's Judicial Cruelty

I'm late at reading all the dissents to the 5-4 decision making marriage legal across the country for gays and lesbian, but Clarence Thomas said something so extraordinarily illogical and ahistorical, it has to be noted:

Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved. Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them. And those denied governmental benefits certainly do...

Clarence Thomas: Cruelty Incarnate?

I'm late at reading all the dissents to the 5-4 decision making marriage legal across the country for gays and lesbian, but Clarence Thomas said something so extraordinarily illogical and ahistorical, it has to be noted:

Mike Huckabee's Blasphemy?

In response to the 5-4 Supreme Court decision that legalized gay marriage yesterday, Mike Huckabee tweeted a number of things, including this:

My thoughts on the SCOTUS ruling that determined that same sex marriage is okay: "Jesus wept."

If you're not familiar with this shortest English line of the New Testament, it comes from The Gospel of John, chapter 11, verse 35. Lazarus has died, and his sister Mary is reproaching Jesus for not having been there because he might have saved his friend...

Justice Roberts Needs a History Tutor

In his dissent today against the 5-4 decision making marriage legal for gay men and lesbians everywhere across the United States, Justice Roberts issued this appeal to historical precedent:

The majority's decision is an act of will, not legal judgment. The right it announces has no basis in the Constitution or this Court's precedent.

As a result, the Court invalidates the marriage laws of more than half the States and orders the transformation of a social institution that has formed the bas...

Justice Roberts: Go Back To History Class

In his dissent today against the 5-4 decision making marriage legal for gay men and lesbians everywhere across the United States, Justice Roberts issued this appeal to historical precedent:

Scalia's Marriage Collapses

In a statement released by his attorney, Justice Antonin Scalia, a scathing opponent of today's 5-4 decision in favor of marriage equality, has announced that he and his wife are appealing to the Vatican for an annulment. Grounds for the annulment were not stated.

"Though I and Maureen have been married for fifty-five years, even such a marriage as ours can not withstand the Barbarians at the Gate. Democracy is threatened by this judicial Putsch, Civilization is at stake, and yes, as has o...

Jindal Joins GOP Jamboree

Last night I heard some GOP shill confidently declare that Bobby Jindal would bring substantive policy proposals "to the table" and that he'd even "been accused of being a policy wonk." Accused? Was she praising him or dissing him?

This is the same nimrod who not so long ago said that "In America we want people who want to be Americans. We want people who want to come here. [As opposed to people who are kidnapped?] We don't say, 'You have to adopt our creed, or any particular creed,' but w...
