Favorite Real Life Mom – The Best Mom In The World

No discussion about mothers would be complete without mentioning my own dear wonderful mom. My mom is one of the strongest people I’ve ever met. My father was a very bad man and she put her own life at risk numerous times trying to shield my five siblings and I from him.

When my father became completely unstable, she packed us up and left. My mom, due to her religious background, doesn’t believe in divorce. She made this decision, thinking it would doom her to purgatory. Yeah, she put her kids’ welfare before her immortal soul. That’s a huge sacrifice.

She also didn’t have any money. She’d never held a job outside the home. We had no place to stay, no food to eat. My heavily armed father wasn’t keen on letting us go. My mom must have been terrified but we didn’t know it. She made every ordeal an adventure and we survived, eventually thriving.

My mom wasn’t perfect and she knew her limitations. She paired us up with mentors, folks who could help us achieve our dreams. This must have been tough for her. I remember coming home and telling my mom that so-and-so was a better mom than she was. Yes, I was a little brat (and I regret it to this day). But my mom continued to send me to visit this ‘better mom’, putting my future before her feelings.

My mom made me the woman I am today. This is why I often dedicate stories to her or name characters after her (her name is Shirley). She doesn’t use computers and she doesn’t read erotic romances (not even mine) so these nods are more for me, than for her. They’re a reminder that I wouldn’t be here without her.

Why is YOUR mom the best mom in the world?

Nate is intelligent, handsome, sophisticated, everything she’s ever wanted in a lover and never thought she could have. Favorite Movie Mom – The Blind Side

The Blind Side is one of my favorite movies of all time, which surprises many people because I have absolutely NO interest in football (grins). I did, however, grow up very, VERY poor (we didn’t eat every day and we had no indoor plumbing) right here in North America and I felt the same despair, the same hopelessness Michael Oher did.

I was fortunate to have a great mom who hooked me up with mentors. These wonderful people helped me escape the vicious circle of poverty, giving me opportunities and teaching me skills that middle class and wealthy folks take for granted (this is one of the reasons I vigorously support libraries – a librarian was one of these generous people).

Many of my buddies didn’t have this same opportunity. They never broke out of poverty. They have now given up on their so-called wild fantasies of owning a home or of ever retiring. They no longer dream. They no longer hope.

So I know how very lucky Michael Oher was to meet Leigh Anne Tuohy (played brilliantly by Sandra Bullock ). I love that Leigh Anne mothers everyone. She has her own causes, her own projects, her own career, but it is clear that she puts her family (whether biological or not) emotionally first.

She’s a modern warrior, venturing into scary parts of town, dealing with scary characters to protect her newly obtained son, to ease his stress. She’s wealthy. It would have be easier for her to simply replace all of Michael’s things, rather than risk her safety to try to retrieve them, but she does this to make him happy.

I love that she’s respectful of Michael’s biological mom, seeking her out even though there was no legal need to. She doesn’t judge. She knows no one is perfect and she also realizes how tough being a mother is. ALL mothers make mistakes. Leigh Anne made mistakes with Michael. I thought her acceptance of Michael’s mother was absolutely awesome.

Interview With Kacey Hammell

I sat down (virtually) with Kacey Hammell for a short interview. Kacey Hammell writes steamy erotic romances and her latest release is PRANK ME, a sexy contemporary erotic romance.

Cynthia Sax: What excites you about PRANK ME?

Kacey Hammell: I’m excited for readers to enjoy it. I had a lot of fun writing this story. It’s carefree, fun, exciting and not rife with a lot of conflict. The characters are who they are – always up for a good time – and are also about the bonds of friendship. It was such an ease to write this story. I love short stories. They really rejuvenate the Muse.

Cynthia Sax: How does PRANK ME start?

Kacey Hammell: It starts with a scene between the heroine, Lark, and her best friend, Bobby. They’ve been friends since college, work together and would call upon one another for anything. Which Bobby does! *g* Through the first chapter, we get a feel for who these characters are, the bond they have, and how fun they both are.

Cynthia Sax: Is PRANK ME a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?

Kacey Hammell: It wasn’t written intentionally with a sequel/series in mind, but the idea is always out there IMO for any story to evolve / revisit again down the road. Bobby might need his own story one day! I’ve learned to never say never when it comes to my characters. LOL

Cynthia Sax: What one piece of advice would you give new writers?

Kacey Hammell:
Never ever give up. No matter how many rejections you receive, no matter how many times you have to re-write a story, never give up. If you have writing dreams and goals, continually work your craft, research and surround yourself with wonderful critique partners who will tell you like it is. Just never give up, no matter how many bumps in the journey you face.

Thank you, Kacey Hammell, for joining us today!

Favorite TV Moms – Game Of Thrones

I’m a huge fan of Game Of Thrones so I thought it fitting that I choose my favorite moms from this TV show. There shouldn’t be any spoilers but if you haven’t yet seen ANY of the episodes and you plan to, you might want to skip this blog post.

There are quite a few kick butt moms in this show but my favorite, hands down, is

Cersei Lannister

Cersei isn’t a ‘nice’ woman (I doubt ‘nice’ women would last long in this brutal world). She murders, schemes, betrays. Her lover is seen as taboo in many cultures (though not in Egyptian culture – grins). She’s ambitious, determined to be in control of not only her household but the world. She uses her beauty, her sex appeal and her position of power (first as the Queen and then as the Queen’s mom) to benefit herself.

And her children.

For all of Cersei’s faults, there is NO doubt in anyone’s mind that she would kill or die for her children, all of her children, not only the heir. When she’s parted from her children, she worries. When her children are threatened, she goes all momma bear on them, ready to wage war. And lord help the man who harms one of her children. He is a dead man walking. She WILL get her vengeance and that vengeance won’t be pretty.

I love that Cersei is a strong warrior mom. She’s not sitting at home, baking cookies and rocking children to sleep (that is admirable in the real world but in the fictional world, I cheer for a more active mom). She is waging world, standing beside the powerful men in her family. Cersei shows that it is okay for a mom to be sexual and still be a great mom.

Daenerys Targarye
n

I have to also mention Daenerys. She isn’t a mom of human babies. Like me, she didn’t have that opportunity (and I think this is one of the reasons why I love her so much). Unlike me, she’s a mom to DRAGONS. Yes, she represents moms of fur babies everywhere (or in this case, scaley babies).

It is clear to everyone that Daenerys loves her dragons. She protects them when they’re young, feeds them, suffers separation pains when they become older (moody teenage dragons – grins). Her dragons are part of her family (as any pet lover would agree).

Favorite Book Mom – Billionaires Have Mothers Too

Mother’s Day is on Sunday (in North America) so this week, I thought I’d talk about mothers in my erotic romances, in movies, on TV, and of course, about my own dear wonderful mom.

Most of my characters have mothers (my androids have manufacturers or creators – grins). Yes, even Blaine, the billionaire hero of He Watches Me, has a mom. These moms might not be mentioned during stories but they are part of the characters. Even heroines whose mothers died or left while they were young are influenced by their mothers.

In some stories, mothers are key to the plot. In Breaking All The Rules, Nate, the Ice man hero, has a complicated relationship with his mother. This relationship has defined how Nate views himself and how he views love. He DOES love his mother. That’s why he tries so hard to maintain a connection with her, even if this connection is based on money. But their relationship is very complex, often perceived as cold, and it’s not-at-all comfortable.

In contrast, Camille, the heroine, has a very comfortable, openly loving, warm relationship with her hippie mom. We never actually meet Camille’s mom during Breaking All The Rules but her presence is everywhere. Her paintings hang on the walls. The rainbow-colored bedspread Camille uses was crafted by her mom. They are very different people yet the love and respect is undeniable.

In some stories, the heroines become moms. I don’t have any heroines who are moms at the beginning of their romances. My awesome hubby and I were never blessed with children so I don’t feel comfortable writing about heroines with children. But I do remember the absolute joy we felt when we thought we’d be parents. Many of my heroines feel that same joy at the end of their romances. I can’t think of a better way to end some stories than with a baby, especially when the tough guy heroes turn to mush.

Do you like reading about moms in romance?

Whose Story Is It?

When I was solely a reader, I thought erotic romances were stories about two people (or more, if they were ménages), that the stories belonged to both the heroes and the heroines equally. Many times, the stories were written from both points of view so the characters must share the story, right?

Ummm…no. Once I started seriously (or semi-seriously as I’m never truly serious about anything – grins) studying and writing romances, I discovered that almost every story belongs to either the hero or the heroine, not to both characters. One character drives most of the action.

Just as it is difficult to have two people steering the same car, it is as challenging having two characters steer the same story. One character often takes the lead, stealing much of the focus.

In The Seen Trilogy (He Watches Me, He Touches Me, He Claims Me), the story is about Anna. She has the biggest emotional issues, takes the biggest emotional risks, changes the most. Sure, Blaine has issues (there’s a reason why romance heroes start stories as bachelors) but his issues tie into Anna’s.

In Breaking All The Rules, even though the story is told from Camille’s point of view, the story belongs to Nate. He changes the most during the story. His issues are the greatest. He has the most to lose.

I’m a pantser (a writer who writes by the seat of her pants, without any plot) but I usually know whose story I’m writing before I type the first sentence. The story belongs to the character who has to change, evolve, grow the most to achieve her or his happy ever after. Yes, the most messed up character gets the most page time. (laughs) Just like in real life, the drama mammas steal all of our attention.

Looking back at your favorite romances, which characters dominated the pages? Whose stories are they?

Seasons In The Sun

Yes, I’m singing that classic Terry Jacks’ song, Seasons In The Sun. (grins) My mom would play that song when I was a little trooper.

The season in which a writer sets a story plays an important role. A story set in winter has a different tone than a story set in summer. Winter is viewed as being dark and cold, sometimes grim. Summer is hot and sunny, a happier, more carefree season. Spring is a season of renewal, of fresh starts, of hope. Fall or autumn is associated with school, getting back to work, harvest.

I have stories set in all of the seasons but my favorite is definitely summer. As I often write about exhibitionism and voyeurism, summer gives me more flexibility. Few people run around naked in the dead of winter (except for Prism, the streaking fairy in Clothing Optional Christmas – grins). Setting a story in summer allows my characters more freedom.

Some reading buddies have asked me why I set Breaking All The Rules in summer. Nate, the hero, is known as the Ice Man. Wouldn’t it make more sense to set this story in winter? Nate would be in his element then.

And that’s the problem. In order to open his heart to Camille, Nate has to change. He’ll only change if he becomes uncomfortable. He has to be taken out of his element, to be put at a disadvantage.

Another reason Breaking All The Rules is set in summer is Camille’s connection to the Earth. Her parents are hippies. She grew up on a commune, growing her own herbs and vegetables. When she’s stressed (and falling in love with Nate does cause Camille stress), she seeks a link to Mother Earth. She digs her bare toes into the soil. She gets her fingers and feet dirty. For Nate to truly understand Camille, he has to see this connection.

I also often wonder if Camille would have pushed Nate so hard in the middle of winter. She is definitely solar powered. It energizes her. She needs this energy when she seduces her Ice Man.

I couldn’t tell this love story in any other season.

Do you prefer to read stories set in a certain season? Which season and why?
