Interview With Tina Donahue
I sat down (virtually) with Tina Donahue for a short interview. Tina Donahue’s latest release is This Time When We Touch, an Erotic paranormal.
Cynthia Sax: What excites you about This Time When We Touch?
Tina Donahue: I’ve always loved the idea of reincarnation, especially when it brings lovers back together. In This Time When We Touch, fate has repeatedly and cruelly separated Jade and Patrick for centuries. Since this is their last reincarnation, the stakes are impossibly high for Jade to break the deadly pattern and to have Patrick’s love for a lifetime. Heady, romantic stuff.
Cynthia Sax: What is your favorite line from This Time When We Touch?
Tina Donahue: It has to be when Patrick sees Jade at the beach for the first time. In this reincarnation they haven’t met. Technically, they’re strangers…yet they’re not. As their eyes meet, a rush of tenderness and love floods him. Patrick doesn’t understand it. Since his presence in Jade’s life has always led to her death in the past, he unconsciously fights his memory of her and their enduring love in order to protect her. Not that he can fully resist. Driven to be near her, he finally asks, “Who are you?”
There’s wonder, hope and sadness in that one question, which makes it my favorite line.
Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for This Time When We Touch?
Tina Donahue: I was watching a remake of H. G. Wells The Time Machine on cable. I was taken with the hero’s desire to return in time so he could save the woman he loves from death. No matter how he tried to change fate, she still died. That really stuck with me and the idea for This Time When We Touch was born.
Cynthia Sax: What one piece of advice would you give new writers?
Tina Donahue: Outside of don’t ever give up, I’d have to say – don’t think it’s easy. I’ve known so many newbies who honestly believe all they have to do is slap a story together, put it on Amazon and they’ll hit all the lists. That happens once in a blue moon. Writing is hard. Writing romance is even harder. I’ve heard so many critics say that it’s only romance. Sure. Why don’t they try to get emotions down on paper and make readers feel what the characters are experiencing. It’s the hardest thing in the world to accomplish. Sometimes there don’t seem to be enough words to convey what I want to say. I have no trouble writing humor. I can do it in my sleep. No trouble plotting, piece of cake. Creating action scenes, building suspense, writing dialogue is second nature to me. But digging deep into a character’s soul, having emotional build, getting readers to laugh, cry, shout in frustration or anger and sigh in relief with your characters is freaking hard.

The Cocky Hero – Tryst Denied
Raff, the hero of Tryst Denied, is a handsome alien male. He knew there was a chance (a very slim chance but a chance) he’d find his one, his forever mate, while he was stationed on Earth and he wasn’t taking any risks. He chose the best human body he could, hoping his outer appearance would compensate for any shortcomings.
He then ensures everyone knows he’s ‘the best’ by telling them, as illustrated in this short excerpt

“You’re not real,” she said, trying to convince herself.
“I understand why you’d think so.” The Orogone straightened, his chest puffing out. “I am a handsome son of a bitch.” He grinned, displaying impossibly perfect straight white teeth. “But I’m all real.” He waved his free hand over his body as though he was a possible prize in a game show. “And I’m all yours.”
Tawania’s gaze dropped to the impressively large ridge in his dress pant. He was also all hard. She gulped, swallowing the lump of want, of need building in her throat. Did it matter that he didn’t exist? Her orgasm would be very real.
“I’m Raff,” he continued, not needing a response. “And you, my brown-eyed beauty, have the lucky distinction of being my One, the sole female I’m destined to spend my long life span with.”

His cockiness, however, covers up feelings of insecurity, of not being good enough. Men who truly believe they’re ‘the best’ don’t need to tell anyone. Raff tries too hard.
He also focuses on his appearance because he doesn’t think there’s much he can do about his core, about his souls. He hopes by making his outer self as perfect as possible, the female he’s destined to love for a lifetime will forgive his character flaws.
Ironically, by over compensating, he looks even more flawed.
What do you like about the cocky hero?
Tawania sees aliens. She knows they’re not real. To avoid being locked up in an institution, she does what any functioning insane person would do—she ignores her imaginary intergalactic visitors. Only one tall sexy alien won’t be ignored. Raff’s heated touch scorches Tawania’s grip on reality. His kisses drive her to madness. He declares that she’s his destined mate. He also insists he’s real.
Raff, an Orogone warrior, is very much real. This handsome warrior has been sent to Earth to round up misbehaving off-worlders and he’s not accustomed to being ignored, especially not by a brown-eyed human female with the most kissable lips in fifteen galaxies. He has mere days to convince her to bond with him. Failure results in death.

I’ve written over seventy erotic romance stories. I’ve written MF, MM, MFM, MFMMMM, sex with an android, with partially shifted beings, with voyeuristic billionaires (grins – just throwing that in there to see if you’re paying attention). My characters have done the deed almost everywhere in almost every position.
I’m also lucky to have some of the best reading buddies in the world. They’ll message or email me about sex scenes, sexual preferences, how big certain body parts should be or how many appendages my alien heroes should have. I love this. I encourage it. I might even use the information in my next story.
Sheri V knows this so I suspect she’d figured she’d stump me by asking what still makes me blush. I must have seen and heard about everything, right? If I haven’t written about it, one of my buddies has. Surely I wouldn’t continue to turn red.

Billionaires are a hot topic in erotic literature. As a writer, what draws you to the billionaires for your leading men?
Cynthia: For me, billionaire is a short form for alpha of the business world. What this label communicates is the hero is successful and (usually) the boss. He has reached the top of his game (likely expecting that this achievement would fix whatever is broken inside him) and then he realizes something or someone is missing.
My billionaires are all different. For example: The CEO of a high tech company (Blaine from HE WATCHES ME) is very different from the CEO of a real estate company (Nicolas from SINFUL REWARDS). The high tech CEO designs products that will become obsolete with every improvement in technology. The CEO of the real estate company is building structures that will last for generations. They have very different reasons for entering their respective industries and different demons driving them to work harder.
Of all of the types of heroes, I believe the billionaire has the greatest range of possible personalities. There are billionaires in almost every industry.

To make a love triangle work, the two heroes have to represent different futures yet be equally powerful.
In Twilight, Bella could live forever with her vampire OR have pups and a semi-human existence with her wolf. Both heroes could protect her. In a fight, either hero could win. She’d have a remarkable life with either hero.
In Sinful Rewards, Bee could have riches, a stable home, loving marriage and a family with her billionaire OR she could have a wild, throw-caution-to-the-wind affair with her biker. Both heroes are panty-dropping sexy. They want Bee and are willing to fight for her. They’re also nice men. I cried when she chose her hero because I loved both men so much.
The reasons these heroes appeal to different readers are the reasons they appeal to different facets of the heroine.

A Year Of Sizzling Hot Sax – Sinful Rewards 1 Read Along
The first novella in Sinful Rewards, a 12 novella contemporary erotic romance serial, releases today! Novellas will be releasing once a month for a year.
Yes, we’ll be spending a year with Bee, a vertically challenged (and in denial) exhibitionist, Nicolas, the jellybean loving billionaire with a dark secret, and Hawke, the tattooed bad boy biker.
We’ll be having so much fun this year. Part of this fun is a read along, both here and in greater detail on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/139616-a-year-of-sizzling-hot-sax-read-along ).
As regular Cynthia Sax readers know, there are no throw away lines in my stories. Every sentence means something, often multiple somethings. A read along will be the story version of a director’s commentary on a DVD. I’ll talk about scenes, what they mean, the impact they have on the story.
Bee And Her Purse
For example: In the first scene (which you can read here for free here – http://tasteofcyn.com/2014/06/16/sinful-rewards-1-first-excerpt/ ) , we start the story with Belinda (Bee) Carter talking about her frayed, cheap designer-knock off purse. This seems like a trivial scene. She’s discussing her purse, right? But she’s truly sharing her outlook on life and what she desperately wants.
Bee is all about lasting relationships. She doesn’t like temporary anything. She doesn’t like fleeting fashions, jobs or love. Bee sees her purse falling apart as a betrayal (hinting that she’s been betrayed by people in the past). She counted on the fashion accessory to last, emotionally investing in the piece, and it didn’t.
So she tries to fix it as she tries to fix her failing relationships. The rational part of her realizes the repair is also temporary but a tiny slice of her heart hopes it isn’t. She hopes her efforts will make the relationship with her purse, with the people she loves last.
Bee Vs Belinda
Some of my beta readers asked me why Hawke calls our heroine Belinda and Nicolas calls our heroine Bee. This is because the two hunkalicious men view our heroine very differently. Originally, Nicolas sees Bee as she wishes to be seen. Hawke, having watched our heroine in private, sees the secret exhibitionist, constantly cleaning side of Belinda. Neither man sees all of Bee, not in this first story.
Their choice of names also hints that Nicolas and Hawke may not be whom they portray themselves to be either. Nicolas appears stiff and formal. I would have assumed he’d used her proper name – Belinda. Hawke is a rebel, super casual, very informal. I would have assumed he’d use the pet name – Bee. That they don’t use these expected names suggests that both men also have secrets. (grins) Yes, more secrets!
