I sat down (virtually) with Ashley Ladd for a short interview. Today is the release day for Ashley Ladd’s Spooky Sojourn, a MF Paranormal Erotic.

Cynthia Sax: How does Spooky Sojourn start?

Ashley Ladd: Deanna Thompson has just been hired to manage The Gilroy Resort and Hotel in Homestead, Florida and to rid it of the ghosts—or whoever is trying to make the hotel appear to be haunted—haunting it. So she talks to the assistant manager and other employees, then hires a paranormal investigator to help her get to the bottom of the problems. She’s taken aback when the man on the other end of the line has the sexiest, most exciting masculine voice she’s ever heard.

Cynthia Sax: Where is Spooky Sojourn set?

Ashley Ladd: In a haunted hotel south of Miami, Florida.

I think haunted hotels are especially exciting. In this case there are two purported ghosts haunting the hotel, one who likes to cook and throw knives around the kitchen and the other haunts the bowling alley and not only bowls but chases the employees around with pins. This has driven away many guests and also hotel personnel. However, when a romance writing convention stays at the hotel, they request a ghost tour, surprising Deanna.

Cynthia Sax: What makes Deanna and Harry perfect for each other?

Ashley Ladd: They appear to be opposites so this is a story of opposites attract. Deanna doesn’t believe in ghosts and the supernatural. In fact she thinks anybody who does is silly, even strange and immature. Meanwhile, Harry DeVeaux, the paranormal investigator she hires to disprove the ghost theory, whole-heartedly believes in ghosts. They often irritate each other even as sparks fly fast and furious.

When someone tries to kill Deanna, Harry’s protective instincts kick into full gear. He lost the first love of his life to foul play. He’s going to do everything in his power to keep Deanna safe and here with him.

Cynthia Sax: What do you love about writing paranormals?

Ashley Ladd: Paranormal is so much fun, especially ghosts. They get to fly, float, become invisible, jump into bodies, talk through people, and do just about anything they want.

Since this release occurs right before Halloween, it’s perfect timing. The mood is set for spookiness and all kinds of paranormal fun, even in hot muggy South Florida.

Writing Erotic Romance – Balancing Sex And Plot

This post has adult content. If you are under the age of eighteen years old and/or sensitive to adult language/situations, please do not read this post.

One of the most common misconceptions about erotic romances is that the stories are a series of sex scenes strung together. Yep, kind of like very bad porn. The pizza guy arrives and, oh noes, our heroine doesn’t have money to pay him. “In lieu of payment,” our big breasted heroine pleads. “Can I strip off your clothes and ride your huge pepperoni?” (insert more bad pizza jokes here)

Some days, when I’m completely brain dead, strung out on Nutella and strawberry licorice whips, I wish it were that simple. But no, readers expect a plot (thankfully, too much sex makes stories a very dull read). They expect the same level of plotting they find in traditional romances except they also want a sensual tone.

There are some great posts by other writers on crafting awesome plots. I’ll be covering some of the issues specific to erotic romance in my post.

Sex To Plot Ratio

How much of the sexy, sexy versus how much plot should your story have?

It really depends on your story. Yeah, that’s a sucktastic answer, isn’t it? But you are the goddess of your own storytelling. You make these calls.

Every scene should reveal character or push the plot forward or change the romantic relationship in an erotic romance. This includes sensual scenes. If a sensual scene can be removed and the story doesn’t change, remove it.

Many erotic romance writers think of the sex as an additional plot. I like the sexual journey to be fully integrated into my erotic romances. Sex changes the plot and the relationship. The plot changes the sex. The relationship changes the sex.

I also like to have my sensual scenes no more than a chapter (3,000 words or 12 pages) apart. There’s no need to hyperventilate. By a sensual scene, I don’t necessarily mean sex. Your hero and heroine eyefucking the hell out of each other qualifies as a sensual scene. Your heroine pressing her breasts against your biker hero’s back, feeling the ripple of muscles under his cotton T-shirt, as they speed away from the baddies can qualify as a sensual scene.

One long sensual scene is often more satisfying than a dozen short scenes. If I can go big, I do. If I can’t, I’ll sneak in a quickie, a great handholding scene or maybe a hot fantasy.

Starting Sexy

I always try to insert a sensual scene as close to the beginning of my erotic romances as possible. Again, this doesn’t have to be sex. It could be the night breeze skimming over the heroine’s bare legs, a thousand ghostly fingers caressing her skin. It could be the feel of quality card stock under her palms, the press of the raised font against her fingertips.

Why do this?

Because I want readers to know that this is an erotic romance. This is a spicy story. They should expect a sizzling heat level. This ensures my readers aren’t surprised when my heroine strips off her clothes and rides the hero like the prized stud he is.

It is also the big dick syndrome. If I tell you to watch for big dicks, you’ll see them everywhere, thinking big dicks are as common as carrots (I wish – grins). If I tell readers this is a hot story, they’ll notice the hot scenes.

Plots To Die For

I’ve seen every subgenre in erotic romance – thriller erotic romance (From Russia With Hot Nasty Lickable Love), inspirational erotic romance (the heroine praising the Almighty both in and out of bed), horror erotic romance (fun with chainsaws), zombie erotic romance (giving a new meaning to a hero losing his shit). You name it. It’s been done. You’re only limited by your sick ass imagination.

A great erotic romance writer can make almost any scene into a panty-wetting delight. Almost every scene. There are some types of scenes that shouldn’t be pumped full of sensuality.

Kiddies

Any scene with kiddies is challenging to make sexy without raising the ick level through the roof. Even in lactation fetish erotic romances, the baby is usually out of the room when the hero and heroine get down and dirty.

It’s tough to go directly from cutsie to sexy. These are two very different tones. Not many people switch from ‘What a cute baby’ to ‘Oh my God, I’m so horny’ in one sentence. There’s often a transition scene to ease into the sexy.

Action Scenes

Action scenes also aren’t great times to have sexy moments. If baddies are shooting at the hero, he isn’t thinking of boning the heroine. He’s concentrating on keeping his tight ass out of the line of fire. When he passes the heroine a gun in the middle of a heated battle, he isn’t contemplating how soft and slender her fingers are, how he’d like them to be wrapped around his cock instead of the phaser. He’s passing her the damn gun, hoping to hell she knows how to use it.

The good news is your characters will likely be pumped up after the shoot out. They will be grateful to be alive and extremely horny, ready to jump each other. This type of passion can flow into hot and heavy, against the wall, drywall cracking sex.

Note: Many publishers will not allow weapons (knives, guns, etc) to be used in sex scenes. You have to be true to your characters and to your story but you should be aware that this might make your story more difficult to sell.

Ending Sexy

I always end my erotic romances with sex. I start with a sensual scene and end with one. It is the last ‘loose end’ I tie up (in the case of BDSM stories, literally – grins). The final scene is usually a glimpse into the couple’s sexual future. It might be tender, extremely loving or it could be even more extreme, showing readers that the couple (or more) will continue to push their boundaries.

This last scene is key. It often decides whether or not your reader feels the couple will have their romantic happy ever after or happy for now (the only requirement for erotic romance). All of the sex scenes in an erotic romance are important but this one is critical.

Sinful Rewards And Being Small Town Infamous

I spent my teenage years in a small town (population: 4,500). When my family moved into the town, my big brother tried out for the hockey team, THE sports team in this town. He was their star defenseman.

I became known as his little sister.

It didn’t matter what I did or said or became. I was a figure skater, starring in a couple of town productions. I was a newspaper reporter, covering school activities for the local weekly paper and town activities for the regional daily paper. I won awards and earned a full four year scholarship to the university of my choice.

To this day, I’m known as my brother’s little sister. I question sometimes that local residents know my name because this is how they always refer to me.

I was lucky. I could live with my label. Some of my friends weren’t as fortunate. One of my buddies had a crazy wild weekend, earning her the town slut label. She’s now happily married with three kids, hasn’t lived in town for over two decades. When she returns to town, folks still whisper behind her back, referring to her as the town slut.

In Sinful Rewards, this is the label Bee’s mom is given. She had ONE wild night, unfortunately conceiving Bee during that encounter, and she became known as the wild woman of Happydale (population: 2,900). She’s been a model resident since that night but nothing she does changes how she’s perceived. I doubt anything will.

This drives Bee crazy. She wants to protect her mom, wants her to have the respect she deserves, yet she’s also terrified she’ll take her mom’s place, becoming the new wild woman of Happydale.

“Hating Cyndi won’t make your mistake disappear.”

“Nothing will make it disappear.” Nicolas tugs on his hand. “I should leave.”

I grip his fingers tighter, holding on to him. “You’re not going anywhere, Mr. Rainer.” I pivot on my bare heels and face him. He avoids my gaze, his expression bleak and his lips flat. “You promised me I’d have twenty minutes of your time.”

“Do you want twenty minutes of my time?” Nicolas asks. “I’m not a nice person, Bee.” The anguish in his voice makes my heart twist. “You heard what I did.”

I release his hand and slide my palms over his chest, the fabric of his suit luxuriously soft under my fingertips. “Yes, I heard what you did.” I’m not certain of the details, knowing only that Nicolas made a mistake, the consequences were terrible, and he’s been living with guilt since that day. “A truly bad man wouldn’t care about his actions.”

“A good man wouldn’t have made that decision.” Nicolas plucks on his shirt cuffs, clearly agitated. “How can you forgive me?”

He asks this because he can’t forgive himself. I read this truth in his dark eyes. Is this why he hasn’t yet formed a lasting romantic relationship—he doesn’t think himself worthy of love, doesn’t believe a woman can accept his past?

I wish I could tell him I loved him but I don’t, not yet.

“You’re not perfect, Nicolas.” I rise onto my tiptoes and press my lips against his chin. The phone on my right hip hums as Hawke, my possessive former marine, tries to interrupt the embrace. I ignore the call, focusing on my upset billionaire. “I knew that before I met you, before I decided to be your friend.”

“I’m a terrible friend also,” Nicolas mutters.

“You are a terrible friend,” I admit and a gold sparkle returns to his brown eyes. “But you have potential. I believe, after two or three years of constant training, you could progress from being a terrible friend to being a really bad friend.”

Nicolas’s lips twitch. “How many years will it take me to become a great friend?”

“More years than you have.” I laugh, skipping away from him. “You’d have to be immortal to achieve great-friend status.”

Nicolas grins, his white teeth flashing against his tanned face. “You’re priceless.”

Interview With Douglas Black

I sat down (virtually) with Douglas Black for a short interview. Today, we’re talking about Douglas Black’s latest release Port In A Storm, a contemporary MM erotic romance.

Cynthia Sax: What makes Jake and Alex right for each other?

Douglas Black: Jake and Alex, the main characters in Port In A Storm, at first seem an unlikely couple – at least as far as Alex’s thinking goes. Sure, they experience an overwhelming lust at first sight, but Jake is about as different a person from Alex as Alex can imagine.

Alex is a recent university graduate stuck working in a coffee shop while he works out what he wants to do with his life. Jake is older, more worldly and seems to have spent his entire adulthood travelling. But as they get to know each other – their physical attraction and emotional connection making it impossible for them to stay apart for long – Alex comes to realise what Jake has suspected from the start. That he is a lot more like Jake than he initially thought, and if he opens up and accepts Jake’s offer of help, Jake just might be able to give Alex the answers he’s been looking for.

Cynthia Sax: What creates problems between Jake and Alex?

Douglas Black: As Alex tells Jake frequently throughout the course of the novel, his life is complicated. Alex has a bad relationship with his father and stepmum and that’s preventing him taking the job in the family law firm that should by rights be his. On top of that, Alex has an “ex-boyfriend” who hasn’t quite got the memo that it’s time to move on and he has an unhelpful desire to please people, often at the expense of his own happiness.

As much as Alex wants Jake, he’s frightened of walking away from everything he knows to be with a relative stranger who doesn’t seem particularly capable of standing still for very long. Being torn between wanting to make his dad proud and wanting to be happy in himself is what fuels Alex’s indecision for much of the novel, until finally it threatens to destroy both Alex’s chance at a future relationship with his parents, and with Jake.

Cynthia Sax: Does a character in Port In A Storm have a secret?

Douglas Black: Jake has a secret. Of course, I’m not going to tell you what it is. You’ll have to read the book to find out, but what I will say is it’s a secret that explains why Jake has spent so much of his adult life travelling, never settling down, never stopping to think. Jake’s running from his past and the last thing he wants to do is talk about it, no matter how often Alex asks him to.

Cynthia Sax: Is Port In A Storm a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?

Douglas Black: Now, don’t tell my editor this, but I am toying with the idea of writing more about Alex and Jake. Jake is my favourite out of all the characters I’ve ever written and although he gets his happy ending in Port In A Storm – eventually! – I think there’s still life in the old dog yet. I’m certain Jake would agree with me, so we’ll just have to wait and see where this perpetual traveller takes me next!

Alex is stuck in a rut. He’s facing a big decision about his future, namely, what to do with it and so far he hasn’t managed to come up with an answer.

Jake blows through Alex’s world like a hurricane and Alex falls hard and fast for the perpetual traveller with a penchant for secrets and a perfect smile. Jake wants Alex, but life isn’t as simple as that.

Jake never settles in one place for long and already their long-distance relationship is driving a wedge between Alex and his family. With no compromises on offer, Alex’s decision about his future becomes a decision about Jake.

For Alex, the idea of losing Jake doesn’t bear thinking about, but choosing him looks like it will mean throwing away everything Alex knows, including his relationship with his parents. And so, Alex finds himself with another question to answer.
