SciFi Saturday News – Star Trek’s Marta, Star Wars VII Favorite Characters And More
I always privately track SciFi developments (a requirement for any SciFi erotic romance writer). I was chatting with a reading buddy this week and she mentioned that she’d love to know about them also.
So I’m starting a weekly round up on my blog with some of the SciFi news I found especially interesting.
RIP Yvonne Craig
Others might remember Yvonne Craig as Batgirl. She will always be Marta, the green slave girl on Star Trek to me. A trained ballerina by training, she enthralled Captain Kirk with her sexy dancing. Though it never took much to do that. (grins) Captain Kirk hit it with every female alien he met.

Favorite Star Wars VII Character
Still on the topic of Star Wars, J.J. Abrams, the director, talked about his favorite character.
“I can only say that Gwendoline Christie is my favorite. She just killed it. You think, “Well, what? It’s wearing a costume.” But it’s a lot to wear and to have a performance when you’re wearing that requires a different kind of skill set and an additional talent, and she’s got it. It’s an incredible thing to work with her. I am glad that a character has been designed that is visually as stunning as that is, because she deserves it and the fans do to. When I first saw that design my mind was blown because it looked so undeniable.”

Mars Rover Selfies
Curiosity, that playful Mars Rover, has jumped on the selfie trend. His latest photo was taken at Buckskin, one of the rock targets.
As Jonathan Amos shares, “Curiosity manages this smart piece of planetary photography in the same way that any human would take a selfie – by holding a camera at arm’s length and framing its own form.”
Space Elevators
Some crazy Canadians are working on a space elevator.
As Andre Mayer shares, “The classic conception of a space elevator is a giant cable tethered to the Earth’s surface near the equator, with a counterweight out in space beyond geostationary orbit (approximately 36,000 kilometres up).”
On a side note: The inventor of the latest space elevator is kind of cute.

Releasing Rage – The Mantidae
In Releasing Rage, the cyborgs are ordered to fight the Mantidae, huge insect-like creatures that are in the midst of migrating to their breeding planets. Unfortunately, their migration leads them through Humanoid Alliance-controlled space. Some of the planets they normally swarm and feed from are now inhabited by humans. The Mantidae view humans as simply another food source.
Mantidae resemble human-sized praying mantis (mantidae is the family name for the species). They have razor-sharp raptorial forelegs. Mantidae prefer to eat their prey alive but if the prey struggles (as humans tend to do when faced with a giant insect intent on devouring them), they use these forelegs like scissors to cut their prey into two. Yes. (grimaces) It is a gruesome death.
Earth mantises also prefer to eat their prey alive and the larger a mantis grows, the larger the prey it hunts. Small mantises devour other insects. Large mantises can eat scorpions, birds, snakes, and rodents. They aren’t predators to be messed with!
Could creatures like the Mantidae exist?
Of course. On Earth, there are 200 million insects for every human. If there are humanoids spread throughout the universe, these humanoids being different sizes, colors, having different features, it is logical that there are insects spread throughout the universe and that some of these insects could be as large or larger than humans with corresponding appetites.
Are the Mantidae the ‘bad guys’?
Calling the Mantidae the enemy would be like calling a shark the enemy. They’re not deliberately trying to harm humans. Their goal is to reach their breeding planets. They need food to fuel their trip. Humans are living on the planets they use as ‘rest stops.’ So the Mantidae eat them.
I’m not pro-Mantidae (they’re giant scary bugs) but I understand why they’re killing humans.

In One Night With My Billionaire Master, there’s a sex tape ‘scandal.’
Twenty-seven years ago, simply having a sex tape would have been a scandal. In 1988, Rob Lowe’s sex tape severely damaged his career. He was recorded having sex with two women (both of legal age, one girl was 16 but that was the legal age of consent in that state) in a nightclub. It was a scandal. He lost roles because of it. If the actor had been anyone other than Rob Lowe, I don’t know if his career would have survived.
Jump forward to today and sex tapes are ‘trendy’. They’re considered a possible stepping-stone to fame and fortune. Kim Kardashian’s ‘leaked’ sex tape in 2007 was instrumental in making her a household name. It led to her and her family being offered their first reality TV show. They’ve leveraged that sex tape (which is no longer a tape but simply a recording) into an empire.
If the couple in One Night With My Billionaire Master had been different, their sex tape would have been a one week wonder with no lasting repercussions. But Arianna’s father has made it clear what he’d do if he EVER found out she was having sex with ANYONE. He also hates Logan Ross with a fiery passion.
