The Retriever In Defying Death
Imee, the heroine of Chasing Mayhem, is a Retriever, a bounty hunter for the Humanoid Alliance.
We first learn about Retrievers in Defying Death. Death and Tifara’s ship pass a vessel piloted by a Retriever. The Retriever’s ship spins out of control and this happens next.

The Retriever ship was turning. The speed of that turn accelerated, the ship moving faster and faster. Then it dropped, corrected, held for a moment, tilted to the right and to the left.
“What is happening?” Was that normal for an attack? Tifara’s expertise was healing. She knew very little about battle or flying.
Another lifeform scan appeared on the main viewscreen. This time, all of the lifeforms were out of their chambers. “What is that?” She pointed at the huge yellow and red blob at the end of a hallway.
“Fire.”
Tifara did know fire on a ship was a bad thing. “We have to help her. They’ll all die if we don’t.”
“They’ll all die if we help, every being except for her.” Death’s eyes shone with suppressed rage. “She’s hunting rebels. You could have been one of her captives.”
“But—”
“The rebels she captured won’t be reprimanded, my female.” He steered their ship farther away from the Retriever’s vessel. The image in the main viewscreen grew smaller. “They’ll be sent to a cyborg manufacturing compound.” His voice was flat. “Newly manufactured warriors will be forced to fight them, to kill them. I could have been one of those warriors. I could have been forced to fight you, my own female, in the ring. I would have had to kill you because if I didn’t, some other warrior would and he might not end your life as quickly, as painlessly as I could.”
“Oh, Death.” Tifara crawled into his lap and petted his chest, trying to comfort him.
He wouldn’t have had to end her life. Dying in a fighting ring wasn’t her destiny.
But he’d been forced to kill others and that must have hurt her cyborg. Her heart ached for him. She stroked his skin with her fingers.
“We’re not helping her.” Death’s tone told her he wouldn’t relent on that. “And you should return to your seat.”
“We’re not helping her,” she agreed, ignoring his comment about returning to her seat. “Rescuing the Retriever will doom the others to death. And—”
The Retriever’s ship exploded, bursting into a million pieces, and Tifara jumped, shocked, surprised, horrified. Debris, fragments of metal, shot outward, reaching toward them, deadly fingers of shrapnel flying in their direction.

In Chasing Mayhem, we hear about a Retriever who had died.

Imee read the fifth communication once, twice, three times, unable to absorb the words. A Retriever, having fewer solar cycles than she did, had lost control of her targets. They had escaped from their holding chambers and had tried to take over her ship. The ship had blown up, killing every being inside it.
“She made one foolish mistake and she died.” Imee leaned forward, covering her face with her hands, trying to hide from the horror that message invoked.

Yes, this is the same Retriever. If it hadn’t been for this young female’s death, Imee might not have taken the risk of trying to rescue her family. This unknown female is partially responsible for the fate of all her sister Retrievers.

Why I Love Tropes And Why All Romance Writers Are Literary Writers
According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trope_(literature) ), a literary trope is “the use of figurative language – via word, phrase, or even an image – for artistic effect such as using a figure of speech. The word trope has also come to be used for describing commonly recurring literary and rhetorical devices, motifs or clichés in creative works.”
In Romanceland, tropes often refer to popular story premises. Why are they popular? Because readers love them, ask for them, buy books using them.
Examples of some popular Romance tropes are
- Beauty And The Beast (my personal favorite)
- The Wealthy Boss And His/Her Assistant
- Enemies To Lovers
- Friends To Lovers
- Secret Baby
- Forbidden Romance
- Marriage Of Convenience
- Second Chance At Love
- The Shocking Twist
- Fated To Mate/Love At First Sight
I could list tropes all day. (grins)
In fact, Romance is a trope. In the beginning (when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), books with strong romance storylines and romantic happy ever afters or happy for nows were classified simply as literary works. Romance didn’t have its own category. Readers loved this type of story. Writers wrote more romance novels. Readers bought them. Romance grew to be so popular; it became its own category.
So using tropes is NOT a bad or shameful thing. You MIGHT wish to evaluate whether or not you want to use a particular trope. There are some tropes in Romanceland that I don’t feel comfortable reading or writing. But never apologize for using tropes, especially if you’re a romance writer. Our entire category is one huge trope.
There will be readers who hate the trope you use, as there are readers who hate every story premise. Those are NOT your readers. Suggest other books to them and concentrate on the readers who love your trope.
How do you make trope readers happy?
You bring something fresh to the trope. I’ve read thousands of Beauty and the Beast stories. I never get tired of them because great writers in this trope incorporate something different in each of their stories.
Maybe your Beauty and the Beast story is set in India, the caste system there adding an extra layer to the premise. Or your Beast is a Mafia Boss who was born into the family and longs to go legit. Or your Beauty was once a Beast. She was horribly scarred and underwent extreme cosmetic surgery. There are thousands of ways to make this trope different.
I like to read in my trope so I know I’m bringing something fresh, something different to it. This also ensures that I understand what aspects of the trope appeal to readers. Part of the appeal of the Beauty and the Beast trope, for example, is that two beings who appear very different can find common ground and appreciation for each other.
If you love a trope, can you use it for every story?
Heck yeah. Many of the bestselling writers concentrate on one trope. Nora Roberts, with her books published under that name, is known for the small town trope. Laurann Dohner is one of the masters of Beauty And The Beast. I gobble up every one of her beast-like heroes. Harlequin often publishes a book a month using their bestselling tropes because they know readers will pick up that book based on the trope alone (in the past, they put the trope in the titles – The Billionaire’s Secret Baby, for example).
The trope can become a strong part of your branding, one of the things you’re know for writing. Tropes should definitely be included as keywords on book listings. Readers search for tropes.
Embrace the trope you’re writing. Respect it and its readers. And have fun. I love writing books with tropes as much as I love reading them.

Jumping Barrel – December 2016
Barrel’s short story will be releasing for FREE in December. Because it is free, there will be no pre-orders. I’ll send newsletter buddies a newsletter when it is available. I’ll also post the release information here on my blog and on Facebook.
Jumping Barrel is the same length as Being Green, last year’s free story, because I know December is very busy for a lot of folks. It is also lighter in tone.
Theirs To Command – February 2017
The next longer cyborg story is Theirs To Command. This is Ace, Thrasher and the Rebel Commander’s story. Yes, it is a ménage (MMF to be exact).
This story marks the beginning of the mass liberation of the cyborgs. Shit is going down, folks. Expect some action in Theirs To Command.
Ghost’s Story – May 2017
Remember the C Model cyborg who saved Joan? That’s Ghost. He’s still alive…barely, and he has definitely earned his own story. (He’s mentioned in Theirs To Command also).
Vector’s Story – August 2017
Vector, the cyborg Captain of the Freedom, will finally find love…if he allows his female on his precious ship. (grins)
Zip’s Story – December 2017
Zip has seen his friends Green and Barrel find love. It will be his turn in December. This will be another FREE short story. His female is hilarious.
Now, you might be wondering… what about Kralj, the mysterious male from Chasing Mayhem? Will he receive a story?
The Refuge Series
As Kralj isn’t a cyborg, I can’t put his story in the Cyborg Sizzle series. His will be the first story in a new series. The Refuge Series will only be four stories long.
Dark Thoughts –March 2017
This is Kralj’s story. It has the word ‘Dark’ in its title for a reason. The Refuge is a violent, primal, highly sexual place. The inhabitants are the beings other settlements expelled. Kralj is their King.
There will be three other stories, release dates unknown (I want to release them all in 2017 but that might be unrealistic).
Dark Sky is the winged male’s story
Dark Strength is the giant green gatekeeper’s story
Dark Fire is the silver Dracheon warrior’s story
That’s what I have planned, thus far, for the rest of 2016 and all of 2017. I’m super excited about these stories!

I love the challenge of making every word count, giving sentences multiple meanings. This is something I continue to strive to accomplish in my longer stories.

Cyborgs And Continuous Learning
Chasing Mayhem is releasing on Tuesday. This is a sidequel to Defying Death. It happens at the same time.
Why is this important?
Because cyborgs share everything they learn. As long as their transmission lines are open, information is being transferred. Millions of bits of knowledge are whizzing through the lines all at once.
If one cyborg calls the love of his life ‘my female’ (as Rage did), other cyborgs are likely to use the same endearment (especially if it works with the female – grins – they might be cyborgs but they are still males – if it works, they’ll use it again and again until it doesn’t). If one cyborg battles the Humanoid Alliance, all of the cyborgs view the fight and learn from the experience.
This is why cyborgs no longer use the expression ‘Thank the Designer.’ Mira, the heroine in Breathing Vapor, is the daughter of the current Designer (there have been many Designers – this is a position, not a being). Her father hurt and disappointed her. Greatly. She still loves him but she’ll never see him again. Out of respect for both Mira and Vapor, her male, the warriors would never casually refer to the Designer in conversation.
This sharing of information influences more than knowledge. A writing buddy asked me if there would ever be a cyborg as angry and as dark as Rage.
That’s unlikely.
Because, after Releasing Rage, all cyborgs have hope.
Before Rage met Joan, cyborgs lived with the knowledge that eventually their kind would cease to exist. They might free themselves. They might be able to choose their battles and how they died. But they’d never have females and they’d never have a next generation.
At the end of Releasing Rage, all cyborgs have been given hope. Finding their compatible females might be tremendously difficult but it COULD happen. They COULD have offspring. They COULD have a future.
A little hope is a powerful thing.
When you’re reading Chasing Mayhem, keep in mind that, for much of the story, Mayhem doesn’t have any knowledge about the activities in Defying Death. For him, these events haven’t yet occurred.
