The Truth: Do You Want It?
Thanks to Lucie Smoker for her great insights on the subject of Truth and how it relates to my YA novella, KISS AND TELL!
Originally posted on reverse perspective:
The truth doesn’t make you rich or famous. It isn’t glam or simple. But truth will set your soul at ease. Finding the truth can be a challenge. Entire journalistic careers have been built or broken on the ability to unearth true facts, yet how often does the apparent truth turn out to be an illusion.
Marcua Aurelius said, Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth,” but I couldn’t disagree more. When you really look deep, beyond the distortions of unobjctive viewpoints and outright lies, the truth is laying there, quite plainly. The question is, now that you found it, do you really want it?

No Lie! A Romantic Getaway on Spain’s Cerro de las Mentiras
Cerro de las Mentiras
I lied.
Southern Spain’s Cerro de las Mentiras, or Mountain of Lies, is hardly a romantic getaway. But it is a great place that really exists and serves as a setting for part of my YA novella, KISS AND TELL. It looms in the distance and, because of its name and scruffy appearance, is the perfect backdrop for a devastating character transformation.
Cerro de las Mentiras is located in the province of Granada in the beautiful and (yes) romantic Andalusian region of southern Spain. It is sparsely vegetated and hiking the circular route takes four to five hours. Unstable weather dumps intermittent snow, fog, and rain on its rocky top which is perfect for the scene where the water naiad as Amélie is collected as rain droplets to her cloud goddess mother and is transformed into Verity the Sibbecoss.
Here are suggested accommodations from Traveling Luck in case you’d like to plan a romantic hike and visit. Be on the alert for any odd weather involving clouds!

Can You Hear Me Now? Speaking with a Queen Conch Shell
What would you do if you picked up a shell and it spoke to you?
In my YA novella, KISS AND TELL, the character of Verity the Sibbeccos (the Kiss of Peace) relates how she used a Queen Conch shell to talk to people who had the courage to hear the truth. Conch shells are the large fluted shells people hold to their ears to listen to the ‘ocean.’ The sound is probably the result of surrounding noise amplified in the shell’s curvy structure.
In KISS AND TELL, Verity is commissioned to speak only the truth, sometimes revealing surprising and painful episodes in the listener’s life. A television advertisement recently showed people talking to a seashell about taking a cruise. The shell rang like a telephone and random people happily answered it.
Would you be willing to listen?

Craft Your Own Valentine Heart (Placemat)
Sew a quilted heart placemat today for a sweet Valentine supper tomorrow! And enjoy it with your copy of KISS AND TELL!
Choose six complementary fabrics, three in each light and dark shades. I picked a spring green and strawberry red garden color theme. You’ll need 1/4 yard of each fabric. Cut strips 1 3/4″ wide.
Apply iron-on batting according to the directions on the package to plain muslin backing fabric making sure the fabric is larger than a heart-shaped template. You’ll trim it to the heart shape after sewing the strips to it.
(I picked a better quality muslin with little garden tools printed in white for the backing. Other times I’ve made these placemats, I’ve used a plain muslin, or you could use one of the fabrics from the strips on the front.)
Position the paper heart pattern on the batting-fused muslin and mark the center of the heart with a pin. Remove the pattern.
This is where you’ll pin the
starter square. Choose the first fabric and cut it into a 1 3/4″ square. Pin it to the center of the heart positioning it like a diamond.
Sew strips using 1/4″ seams onto the initial square starting on its upper left side and working clock-wise. The first two strips should either both light or both dark. Continue sewing 1/4″ seams around the squares building the top of the placemat and ironing the strips open as you go.
Use the template to trim the top to a heart shape. Sew together facing right sides together, leaving a about four inches open to turn inside out. Slip stitch closed and iron flat.
Set a place setting and enjoy!

Taking a Dip in Pilar de la Carrera, the Secluded Fountain of Alhama
Pila de la Carrera
What does this secluded fountain splish-splashing next to the Church of Carmen have to do with one of the characters in my YA novella, KISS AND TELL, being released in two days?
Alhama de Granada
In 1851, the double-basined fountain, Pila de la Carrera, was built in the thermal spa town of Alhama in the southern Spanish province of Granada. Primarily, it was used as a watering trough for animals. This is where the naughty naiad character, Amélie, in my YA novella, KISS AND TELL, wound up as her punishment. She was not allowed to leave the waters. It’s a lovely fountain with the sound of water tinkling from an elaborate middle tower. But it was for animals. Amélie was not a happy water nymph.
Read more about Amélie’s plight, why she was sent there, and how she deals with her incarceration here!

Twofer Tuesday – Quotes on Truth
The concept of Lies vs. Truth plays a big part in KISS AND TELL, my YA novella available on February 14th, Valentine’s Day. Here are a couple of short quotes on the subject:
“A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” - Winston Churchill
and
“The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” - Oscar Wilde

Take Heart with Irish Soda Bread
Irish Soda Bread with Dried Cranberries
Today I made my 2011 recipe for Irish Soda Bread – with a twist! Instead of 1/2 cup raisins, I added 1/2 cup dried cranberries to give it a bit of Valentine’s Day color!
I used a heart-shaped baking pan instead of a round cake pan. See my October 12, 2011 recipe here. This is a great bread to enjoy with stew, soups, or even with tea and a Kindle or Nook while reading the mythological YA novella, KISS AND TELL – out Valentine’s Day!
