As If By Magic

By Robin Weaver

This month's theme--My Writing Dreams Come True--instantly made me think of magic.  Because the fulfillment of any of my dreams: authoring a bestseller, having one of my books scripted for the big screen, or simply having a reader say, "I enjoyed the read," would indeed be magical.

Only... Do I believe in magic?

Do you?

If you’re
geekishly inclined (like moi), you might

Getting Serious About A Series

I'm going to write a series, and I'm so excited. I'd never really thought about it before, but after doing a session about it at a recent RWAustralia conference, seeing writer friends do it and loving finding an author has more books with the same setting and inter-linking characters - I thought 'why not'? (The fact that series are popular maaaay have swayed my thinking just  little as well.) I

The Allure of the Contemporary Novel

By: Marcia King-Gamble
www.lovemarcia.com

I grew up reading  mostly historicals and loved them. Most were set in the UK and featured dukes, duchesses, and nobility on the whole, usually in exotic settings. Meaning - castles, ballrooms, highlands. These characters were people who hobnobbed with the "Ton," Through reading, I entered a world I didn't know existed and learned some fancy words.

Digging Down in Romantic Suspense

by M. L. Buchman

Ages ago (okay, last month, but it seems ages ago--been a busy month), I wrote a post about contemporary romance. In it, I described romantic suspense...briefly! This is a topic I could write about at (perhaps nauseating) length. I'll try to restrain myself here.

First that paragraph:

Romantic suspense, especially military romantic suspense has
it own challenges. The danger,

Book Turn Offs for This Reader

By Linda Lovely

When you need notesto keep track....

Like my fellow blogger, Sarah Raplee, I once felt compelled to finish any book I started. Not so much anymore. If I'm seriously annoyed, I'll quit reading. And I certainly will never pick up another book by the same offer if the ending is a huge disappointment. Here are some of this reader's pet peeves.

Scene/Time Hopscotch-It’s

Finding the Fun

by M. L.
Buchman

I made a
brief visit to another world last week—actually in several ways.

I wandered
out of romance and went back to science fiction, which is very definitely
another world. It is a world where setting trumps character. Even plot trumps
character.

What do I
mean by that? Character is always paramount, right? Of course, right! (Sorry,
my Jewish side is slipping out. No,

ANNOY ME AND I’LL TOSS YOUR BOOK!

Hi, I'm Sarah Raplee, author of surprising, touch-your-heart paranormal romantic suspense.

AUTHORS:   DON'T ANNOY YOUR READERS!!!

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve always
been a very forgiving reader. Until I was in my thirties, I’d never even considered
(gasp!) not finishing a book. The
idea felt rude, maybe even immoral. Shouldn’t I give the author a chance to
redeem himself or herself

Hook Me Up!

By Courtney Pierce

Dialogue.

After a quick setup, then dive me into the talkin’
and doin’. That’s what sucks me into a book.

They say that good books are 80% dialogue. Readers are
catapulted into the character’s head to reveal their personality, moral fiber, and
soul. I agree. Characters build a framework for a book’s premise through words
and how they say them. I bond. I’m glued.

Contemporary Romance – The Demons Within

I was first published in 2006 in
romantic suspense. As I wrote in my previous blog, Romantic Suspense – Findingthe Hero Inside, romantic suspense is my first love. But after my first two
published novels – both romantic suspense – I received an email from my agent.
She explained that my publisher had told her the romantic suspense market had
sprung a leak and they wanted me to now write

My Seven Sins In A Book

Hi, I'm Pippa Jay, author of scifi and supernatural stories with a romantic soul.

The older I've got and the longer I've been published, I find myself less and less forgiving when it comes to what I read. I'm picky on my genres and my authors, and with so many hundreds of new books published every day, there are several guaranteed ways a new-to-me author will get put on my do-not-read list.
