My review

First up, what a clever title. I do like those! The ‘Christmas Number One’ refers to more than just the song Cara and Javi are making.

A lovely cover too. Yes, there are rather a lot of festive novels out there with blue covers and swirly writing but at least here it’s red! It’s eye-catching, genre-friendly and raises expectations of a fun, Christmassy read.

This is a lively novel and gives an interesting insight into the world of the music industry. Just as authors have to write their seasonal stories well in advance of Christmas, similarly pop stars have to think festive in midsummer. Thus the action of the story spreads through about six months of the year so it’s not just a Christmas based story, but there’s enough of the festive spirit to qualify this as a Christmas read.

I did find the lead characters to be a little uneven. Cara was super and likeable from the start with her determination and wry humour. Javi… hmm, he took some warming to and I’m not sure I ever really liked him! But tough, it doesn’t matter what I think! Cara is happy, so that’s good enough for me.

The writing is brisk and enjoyable, the settings superb and so there is much to entertain the reader.

My review

It took me a little while to settle into this story. I’m not a huge fan of first-person present-tense narrations – blame it on my age! – but this narrative style seems to be increasingly popular so I guess I’ll just have to move with the times! And anyway, once the action got underway I stopped noticing it so much.

The book is principally character-driven, and we have some fascinating ones in this novel. Like real people, all these fictional creations have back story, foibles, strengths, problems and dreams. They interact believably and give a strong sense of community.

The waterside and boat setting is unusual and interesting, and introduces those of us not well acquainted with such a way of life to different experiences.

The festive element is all it should be for a  Christmassy story.

An enjoyable, easy read that will start making you think about getting that Christmas shopping done early!

My review

Milla is our central character, and she’s an engaging, interesting person. Also hurting, as this St Valentine’s Day sees the arrival of the baby of her ex-boyfriend and her business partner, Phoebe. To rub salt in the wound, Phoebe has even pinched the name Milla had earmarked for her own use in the future.

So Milla loses herself in her work, and comes into contact with Nic. He’s a fun character, who is upbeat and confident, if occasionally a little too full of himself. He’s a good foil for Milla, who lacks confidence at times.

The story is entertaining and fresh, and the setting atmospheric and charming. Characters gel or spark to give us some interesting interactions, and they all develop. Action is steady with the right amount of tension here and there to keep us thoroughly hooked.

All in all it’s a very enjoyable story, which you can read any time of year, not just around St Valentine’s Day.

My review

Oh, but this is a joyous book! But not glib. There is true sadness too, with the war raging in the background, destroying and disabling an entire generation of young men. The eccentric Fyttleton family have lost their beloved Bertie, whose presence shines brightly for them still, making them smile and cry.

This group of determined and unconventional women soldier on with everyday life, struggling to make ends meet and put something edible on the table for their guests. Life is interesting as their guests are rarely dull, and they bring interesting events along with them.

Christable, our narrator, is a wonderful character. She’s witty and bright, sees the humour in a situation and also the pathos, and is very much the driving force of her family. The mystery element is clever and entertaining, rather like the Fyttleton family themselves.

Immensely enjoyable.

My review

This is a fabulous series – Wedding in Cornwall – that just keeps giving!

We catch up with Julianne and Matt. They are now busy juggling children and careers, and struggling bur mainly managing to get that work/life balance just right. Everything seems to be going well, but there’s a bit of disruption on the way. How will the family handle it?

Cornish village life provides a rich, slightly eccentric and warm background. There are some fabulous characters to meet and plenty of interesting things going on. The archaeological dig is fascinating with lots of attention to detail that makes it all very convincing.

I really enjoy how this author keeps both her characters and her readers on their toes. She lulls you into a false sense of security, then pulls the rug from under your feet, although with a twinkle in her eye. She’s teasing rather than tormenting us, but it does introduce some real tension and uncertainty, even though we’re sure Ms Briggs will work her magic and give us an ultimately satisfying and uplifting story.

All the interactions between characters are entertaining and cleverly written and it’s so very easy to be drawn into the world of this novel and feel sad to say goodbye when the last word is read.

My review

This is an enjoyable romance, and it’s nice to use that term when our main characters are a couple already in a steady relationship, with little Harry as proof to that! Perhaps it’s more of a journey novel though, since Heather has made both a physical and a mental journey in leaving her old life behind when she moved up to the Highlands. She still has a little further to go: I have to confess to finding her clinging to her view that she can’t get married because her mum isn’t there to see it just a teeny bit irritating. Fortunately her partner has the patience of a saint, and events are conspiring to force her to make some important decisions.

The portrayal of life on a farm is wonderful and very realistic. Living on a farm myself, I know all too well that evenings can find you utterly exhausted. But it’s a rewarding and interesting way of life, and that came over well in the story.

Christmas tends to bring things, good and bad, to a head and that’s the case here. Heather gets a reality check, which, imho, she sorely needs, and fortunately it brings out the best in her. The festive background is beautifully portrayed, and had me thinking wistfully of the Christmas decorations in the loft and starting to think about how soon I can get them out without appearing too batty!

This novel is an entertaining continuation of the Glendale series, and it’s interesting to see a different view of previous main characters. Heather and Rory are obviously developed the most, but other familiar faces evolve a little too.

All in all, festive and touching.

Because Malcolm isn’t what he seems: he’s had other names and lived in other places. A lot of other places. As it gathers pace, Malcolm’s story combines tragedy, comedy, mystery, a touch of leprosy, several murders, a massacre, a ritual sacrifice, an insane tyrant, two great romances, a landslide, a fire, and a talking fish.

 

My review

I think ‘unexpected’ is the best word to sum up the novel because it’s delightfully different in every respect.

For example, most people don’t have husbands who are Greek immortals. To say that Bessie will be surprised when she reads this long explanatory letter is most definitely an understatement.

Not many authors handwrite their books anymore. However, Andy Hamilton does – and in very neat writing, it must be said. Is this just a gimmick? No. It emphasises that this is a letter, written in fits and starts rather than chapters, and the sometimes uneven spacing and the crossings out reflect the emotion of the writer at the time. It adds even more interest to what’s already a very interesting book. It also fits well with our rather old hero.

Also unexpected is the life story that unfolds. Some elements we know about from legend, but there’s plenty more to discover.

I really enjoyed the book. To be honest, I thought I would as I’ve long admired this multi-talented author’s wit and humour. Longhand, for me, has the most similarities to Mr Hamilton’s wonderful ‘Harry’s Game’ in that both feature immortal figures, including a particularly petulant and capricious major deity. Zeus really is terribly selfish and spiteful, with no regard for the consequences of his irresponsible, spoilt behaviour. He’d go far as a Cabinet Member these days…

There’s so much to relish in the book – a wonderful imagination, beautiful and bizarre imagery, cleverly crafted characters, sharp wit, ingenuity, the unexpected (that word again) and ultimately great entertainment value.

Definitely one to read, the old fashioned way!

My review

This is a very enjoyable, heart-warming romcom set by the English coast. But don’t think snug country cottage – Harvest Cottage is anything but, and that’s not the only touch of unconventionality in this book. Many of the characters have a touch of eccentricity, because after all that’s what makes uplifting books like this one so much more entertaining, and there’s also a refreshingly unique hero in the form of Gabriel, who is disabled.

Pretty much everyone we meet is overcoming or dealing with some sort of baggage, but this isn’t an issue-laden book. It’s reflective of real life where no one’s path is completely smooth, and we all trip and fall from time to time and make mistakes. It’s all wonderfully real and human.

There’s a lot of energy in the book, not just from the strong characters but from the plot and action. Lots is going on, and at quite a pace too.

And there’s layering, suggested by the title A Country Escape. What exactly is the escape from? And to what? And who are the escapees? Rather more than simply urban living, that’s for sure.

A rich and rewarding read.
